Happy Birthday, Mr. Loach

Kenneth "Ken" Loach (born 17 June 1936) is an English film and television director. He is known for his naturalistic, social realist directing style and for his socialist ideals, which are evident in his film treatment of social issues such as homelessness (Cathy Come Home, 1966) and labour rights (Riff-Raff, 1991, and The Navigators, 2001).
Loach's film Kes (1969) was voted the 7th greatest British film of the 20th century in a poll by the British Film Institute. Two of his films, The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006) and I, Daniel Blake (2016) received the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, making him the ninth filmmaker to win the prestigious award twice.

Politicamente impegnato, sostenitore dell'ideologia socialista, ha fatto parte della corrente artistica inglese del Free cinema (i cui leader erano registi come Lindsay Anderson, Karel Reisz, Joseph Losey e Tony Richardson), con film come Poor Cow e Kes. Tra i vari premi ricevuti meritano di essere ricordati le due Palme d'oro vinte al Festival di Cannes nel 2006, per Il vento che accarezza l'erba, e nel 2016 con I, Daniel Blake, il Pardo d'onore al Festival di Locarno nel 2003 e il Leone d'oro alla carriera alla Mostra del cinema di Venezia nel 1994. È padre del regista Jim Loach.
