Film 2500 - Leviticus

Intro: May the horror fest continues!

Film 2500
: "Leviticus" (2026), directed by Adrian Chiarella
Watched: From the projector
Language: English
Watched with: Niamh
Thoughts: I think this movie is enjoyable, but not as life-changing as the reviews would like you to think. I still had a good enough time, but yeah, I was expecting something a bit different.
Specifically, "Leviticus" reminded me of other films, particularly "It Follows", but also other recent Australian movies like "Talk to Me" (the young protagonists of both movies) and "Bring Her Back" (the ritual part of both stories). With the latter two, it's more a similarity in tone and general vibe, whereas I think there's a genuine likeness to "It Follows"'s story, as literally the monster/creature follows the protagonists to attack them in both movies. Don't get me wrong, I'm not pointing it out to say it's a bad thing, but simply that this came to mind when I was watching this film.
Other than this, I do believe that the best way to describe "Leviticus" is through the words of a review I read online, which went roughly like this: homophobia is the real monster in this story. And I think it's so true.
I mean, there is an actual monster: an entity that impersonates the person you desire the most to then attack you: in this case, as the two protagonists are gay and in love, they basically get attacked by each other, but the "monster" version of themselves. And because this entity gets summoned through some sort of supernatural conversion therapy ritual, it is indeed a case of homophobia at its core. And when you think that the protagonist's mom is also involved in the ritual... it makes it even more upsetting.
Because of these unusual elements, I enjoyed the movie's take on this issue combined with an unexpected horror setting, which is quite refreshing. Additionally, the actors playing the two teenagers in love (Joe Bird, Stacy Clausen) are quite good, and their performances really carry the film, considering they have to portray both the normal and monstrous versions of their characters. On top of that, I didn't expect to see Mia Wasikowska in a movie again (here also producing), as I thought she had retired from acting -- which she clearly didn't, although she stepped away from the Hollywood spotlight.
All in all, I think "Leviticus" presents an interesting take on queer youth -- in Australia, specifically -- and is able to demonize homophobia in such a tangible way that is rare to see on the big screen, especially in the horror genre. That said, I wouldn't say I was blown away.
Cast: Joe Bird, Stacy Clausen, Jeremy Blewitt, Ewen Leslie, Davida McKenzie, Mia Wasikowska.
Box Office: $8.6 million
Worth a watch?: It's an interesting combination of queer cinema and horror, a genre that rarely engages so openly and honestly with teenage gay characters. If you're looking for a story that is gay and scary at the same time, go for it. Especially because, for once, i'ts not a product from the US or the UK. This film has an interesting point of view and occasionally delivers on the horror as well. If you're looking for a more traditional scary movie, then look elsewhere.

Film 2453 - O Agente Secreto

Intro: Finally back to the movies—it's still Oscars time, and we decide to go and watch this film before it leaves theaters.

Film 2453
: "O Agente Secreto" (2025), Kleber Mendonça Filho
Watched: At the movies
Language: Portuguese, German
Watched with: Niamh, Debbi
Thoughts: I haven't seen many Brazilian movies in my life, so it was inevitable that I would compare this one to the one I watched a year ago, which was also nominated for multiple Oscars. The thing is, "O Agente Secreto" is not "Ainda Estou Aqui".
There are things I really enjoyed about this film: Wagner Moura, for one, is amazing. I think I saw him in previous American endeavours like "Elysium" and "Civil War", but I can't really say I remember his performances there. "The Secret Agent" was my real introduction to his work, and my oh my, I was impressed. I knew he didn't have a shot at winning Best Actor at the Oscars, but his is definitely one of my favourite performances from last year.
Furthermore, this is a very compelling story, especially for someone like me with no prior knowledge of Brazilian history. Once you get into the groove of the plot and how it’s told, once you figure out what the whole hairy leg situation is about, you do get invested. And here’s my biggest problem with this film: it's really hard to follow the story.
I know it might sound contradictory considering what I just said, but I found it really, really hard to follow everything that was going on—the time jumps, events I know nothing about, the number of characters, reading between the lines while also keeping up with subtitles, the three Wagner Moura characters... it’s a lot. Not even Debbi—who was born and raised in Brazil and lived there until 2023—knew about the leg thing and had to google it to understand what it meant (apparently it was a form of satire used in newspapers to call out shady police work back in the day, or at least that’s what she told me). I also had to check the plot on Wikipedia afterwards because I wasn’t sure about some parts (I should disclose that I fell asleep at one point, right at the pivotal moment of the sofa conversation where he's recording testimony about Ghirotti's corrupt activities. So yeah, that didn’t help).
Overall, I think "O Agente Secreto" is a good movie, but too chaotic for a story so complex and rich in detail and historical references that I knew nothing about. A more straightforward plotline would have definitely helped me grasp what I was watching without having to rely on the internet for a recap or further explanation. I'm not saying the story should have been simplified for international audiences, but at least for me, a more linear narration would have made a difference. And I know comparisons aren’t always fair, but the emotional impact that "Ainda Estou Aqui" had on me didn’t quite carry over here.
Cast: Wagner Moura, Carlos Francisco, Tânia Maria, Robério Diógenes, Alice Carvalho, Gabriel Leone, Maria Fernanda Cândido, Udo Kier.
Box Office: $22.5 million
Worth a watch?: Not an easy watch. The plot is dense (from Wikipedia: "It follows Armando (Wagner Moura), a former professor caught in political turmoil during the Brazilian military dictatorship, attempting to flee persecution.") and the screenplay doesn’t make it particularly easy to follow what’s going on—or at least that was my experience. Wagner Moura delivers a performance for the ages and proves he’s a superstar.
Awards: 4 Oscar nominations (Best Picture, Actor, Casting, and International Feature Film). 2 BAFTA nominations (Best Original Screenplay and Film Not in the English Language) and 2 Golden Globe wins (Best Foreign Language Film, Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama) over 3 nominations (Best Motion Picture – Drama). Nominated for Best Foreign Film at the 2026 César Awards. The movie competed for the Palme d'Or at Cannes 2025, where it won 4 awards (FIPRESCI Prize, Prix des Cinémas Art et Essai, Best Director, and Best Actor).

Film 2450 - Mamma Mia!

Intro: Another evening in Fuerteventura, another movie at Debbi's. This time the trio reunited for dinner, and we decided to watch a movie that we all love (and that was available on Netflix).

Film 2450
: "Mamma Mia!" (2008), Phyllida Lloyd
Watched: From the TV
Language: English
Watched with: Debbi, Niamh
Thoughts: Lately, musicals have been a hit or miss for me, but there are some that I can always go back to and enjoy. "Mamma Mia!" is one of them.
It's not perfect by any means. I think some of the shots are clunky, and the heavy use of green screen really takes you out of it in some scenes, but overall the music is great and the cast is fantastic, so it's an extremely enjoyable experience. More so than its sequel anyway.
Meryl Streep is a perfect Donna, and I think she has great chemistry with both Amanda Seyfried and her two bandmates (Julie Walters and Christine Baranski). In general, the female cast is a step above everybody else. The energy they bring and the fun they're having together transcend the screen and really reach the audience—it's contagious. Even more so if you know the songs: try not to sing along!
From a technical point of view, I think the movie could have been a bit "cleaner," but it compensates for its clumsiness with charismatic energy, wit, and a lot of fun.
Ps. I've been taking a Screenwriting class at the Lir Academy lately, and our lecturer asked us to come up with a couple of loglines for movies we had watched in the past. I picked "Weapons" and "Mamma Mia!", so I thought I'd include the one I wrote for this movie here:

A young woman planning her wedding on a small island in Greece decides to invite her three possible fathers to the celebration without telling her free-spirited mother. Things get complicated when the three men arrive at the same time, each believing he might be her father.

Film 2450 - Mamma Mia!
Cast: Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Julie Walters, Dominic Cooper, Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski.
Box Office: $706.4 million
Worth a watch?: If you love musicals, or this one specifically, "Mamma Mia!" the movie adaptation is good fun and shouldn't be missed. If musicals are not your thing... then it's better to leave it.
Awards: 3 nominations at the 2009 BAFTAs for Outstanding British Film, Best Film Music, and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer. 2 Golden Globe nominations for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical (Meryl Streep) and 1 Razzie Award win for Worst Supporting Actor (Pierce Brosnan). The movie was nominated for 1 Grammy for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media and Best Breakthrough Female Performance (Amanda Seyfried) at the MTV Movie & TV Awards.

Film 2440 - The History of Sound

Intro: I'll be honest, I wasn't necessarily feeling the fantasy for this one, but I decided to give it a go considering it was Paul Mescal and Josh O'Connor together in a gay romance... But God knows I've been fooled before.

Film 2440
: "The History of Sound" (2025), Oliver Hermanus
Watched: At the movies
Language: English
Watched with: Niamh
Thoughts: Possibly one of the most boring movies I've seen in my life. And not just boring—pretentious boring. I hate when I'm promised something that isn't delivered: a gay romance? Barely. History of sound? What history? This film is more than 2 hours long and almost nothing happens. The two fellas fall in love and fuck for a while, then go their separate ways, make lives for themselves, and eventually find their way to "reconnect." The lies come out, life gets harsher, everything gets complicated, boom—we're in the present and saying goodbye. Fine. Fine. The End. I cannot describe how disappointed I was in this film. You feel no connection to the characters, the story feels very episodic and at times disjointed, and you learn almost nothing about music and the history of American folk songs. Which is so strange, considering a) it's in the title of the movie and b) the first part of the story is all about David's obsession with these songs... I also want to stress as much as possible how much this isn't a gay love story. The characters just happen to be two men falling for each other, and that's it. Both Paul Mescal and Josh O'Connor fooled me once already with their gay-bait movies "All of Us Strangers" and "Challengers," so I guess this is the straw that broke the camel's back.
Cast: Paul Mescal, Josh O'Connor, Molly Price, Raphael Sbarge, Emma Canning, Alessandro Bedetti, Chris Cooper.
Box Office: $1 million
Worth a watch?: It feels less like a movie and more like an award-friendly vehicle, if that makes sense. I can see a world where "The History of Sound" is a good movie—interesting and well made. The version we have in this part of the multiverse, though, is just pretty to look at but empty, with not much to say. Which is quite disappointing.
Awards: In competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.

Film 2427 - Brokeback Mountain

Intro: The last movie from the December batch I left behind to write about the films competing at this year's Oscars. It wasn't the only reason, though, as this is the movie I watched on an extremely tough day for me. I was emotionally drained, tired, and unhappy in a relationship that, within a few days, would end for good.
So I decided to rewatch this modern masterpiece, a story that breaks my heart every time. I put my phone away and cried for almost two hours, which, at the time, was exactly what I needed.

Film 2427
: "Brokeback Mountain" (2005), Ang Lee
Watched: From the computer
Language: English
Watched with: No one
Thoughts: One of my favourite movies of all time, "Brokeback Mountain" is an emotional rollercoaster that never fails to deliver.
This film makes me think about the past a lot: I watched it alone at the cinema when it came out because none of my friends wanted to go with me. I was 18 at the time, still not fully out, and I remember seeing all these gay couples sitting together, watching the film, and wondering if there was a future for me where I too would be watching a movie with my partner—maybe holding hands or kissing. I remember reading the book and crying my heart out. I remember how every time I rewatched "Brokeback Mountain", the last scene would break my heart.
Finally, it's impossible for me to talk about this movie without mentioning what it meant to me at the time (and still means). As the only gay kid in my group of friends, for the longest time I felt like I was the only gay person on the planet. I thought it would be hard for other people to understand me and what I was going through. In a way, this movie represented hope. Not only does it revolve around a love story between two men, but it's also a movie that is adored by critics and audiences alike, has won many awards and, to this day, is considered one of the finest examples of contemporary cinema.
So yeah, "Brokeback Mountain" is not only a great movie, but it also represents a piece of pop culture that is, in a way, part of my story. And for that, I'm forever grateful.

Film 2427 - Brokeback Mountain
Cast: Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Linda Cardellini, Anna Faris, Anne Hathaway, Michelle Williams, Randy Quaid, David Harbour, Kate Mara.
Box Office: $179.1 million
Worth a watch?: A masterpiece, a great and tragic love story, a forever classic. The soundtrack is amazing, Ang Lee's direction is immaculate, and the four main cast members give timeless performances. It has to be watched.
Awards: Nominated for 8 Oscars (for Best Picture, Actor for Ledger, Supporting Actor for Gyllenhaal, Supporting Actress for Williams, and Cinematography), it won 3: Best Director, Adapted Screenplay, and Original Score. 9 BAFTAs nominations (Best Actor in a Leading Role, Actress in a Supporting Role, Cinematography, Music, and Editing), it won 4 for Best Film, Direction, Actor in a Supporting Role (Gyllenhaal), and Adapted Screenplay. 4 Golden Globes wins (Best Motion Picture – Drama, Director, Screenplay, Original Song for "A Love That Will Never Grow Old") over 7 nominations (Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama, Supporting Actress, Score). 1 Grammy nomination for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media. 2 MTV Movie & TV Awards wins for Best Performance (Gyllenhaal) and Best Kiss (Gyllenhaal and Ledger). Film 2424 - Pillion

Intro: It took me a while to get to this review. I had the template ready for about 10 days, but couldn’t find the time, energy, or just the willingness to sit down and write it. Yeah, the peak of award season just ended, but to be fair, it was mainly because this is the last movie I watched with Yegor before our breakup and, possibly, part of me wasn’t ready to let go.
The list of new movies to review is getting longer, though, so off we go.

Film 2424
: "Pillion" (2025), Harry Lighton
Watched: At the movies
Language: English
Watched with: Niamh, Debbi, Yegor
Thoughts: Not the gay romance I was expecting, "Pillion" was definitely an interesting watch. To me, BDSM, dom and sub—it’s all a world I don’t know much about, and it’s not a kink I have, so watching this movie was almost like analyzing a case study.
I think Alexander Skarsgård is perfectly cast and gives off the right vibe for his character, Ray. Harry Melling is a great protagonist and shows his potential here as a leading man, regardless of the genre, but I can’t deny it was a bit strange to see Harry Potter’s cousin’s ass on the big screen (Melling plays Dudley Dursley in the "Harry Potter" franchise). Anyway, the two together are the gay couple you didn’t know you needed. They make a great screen pair.
Overall, "Pillion" is bold and provocative and shines a light on a community that is rarely the subject of a movie (let alone one produced by the BBC). Not necessarily my gay romance fantasy, but I found it interesting and definitely refreshing.
Cast: Harry Melling, Alexander Skarsgård, Douglas Hodge, Lesley Sharp, Jake Shears.
Box Office: $5.9 million
Worth a watch?: "Pillion" isn't for everybody, but if it's premise interests you ("A directionless man is swept off his feet when an enigmatic, impossibly handsome biker takes him on as his submissive.", from IMDb), then it's definitely worth a watch.
Awards: 3 BAFTA nominations (Outstanding British Film, Outstanding British Debut, and Adapted Screenplay). The movie won Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival 2025 in the Un Certain Regard section.

Film 2401 - Together

Intro: I was curious to see this movie, the trailer seemed interesting.

Film 2401
: "Together" (2025), Michael Shanks
Watched: At the movies
Language: English
Watched with: Niamh, Debbi
Thoughts: I'll be honest, not a big fan of this one. It's not bad per se, it just didn't deliver to the potential of its premise.
The imagination is there, the story has some interesting twists - althought the biggest one you can see it coming from a mile away - but ultimately "Together" is not as gripping as you would expect. The body horror and physical stunts are great - the visual effects really help here - but there's something missing and ultimately the movie didn't resonate too much with me. Something similar we've seen last year could be "The Substance", but that movie reaches a level of iconic that is never matched here. Dave Franco and Alison Brie are really committed though, and they're a great pair on the big screen.
Cast: Dave Franco, Alison Brie, Damon Herriman, Mia Morrissey.
Box Office: $32.3 million
Worth a watch?: "Together" could be the baby of "The Substance" and "Midsommar", although this movie never reaches the peak that the other two films are able to achieve. It's not bad, but not great either.

Film 2376 - Companion

Intro: I saw the poster and I got really curious about it. Then the red carpet, the press and the good reviews came in, which got me excited. Somehow, tho, I ended up forgetting about this film, until someone mentioned it and I finally decided to give it a go.

Film 2376
: "Companion" (2025), Drew Hancock
Watched on: The projector
Language: English
Watched with: Niamh
Thoughts: Did I enjoy it? Absolutely. Was it as revolutionary and groundbreaking as some reviews made it out to be? Not really.
"Companion" is a good sci-fi thriller with a little bit of horror and humor in it and it works well, althoigh the idea of a robot lover (the companion) that gains conciousness (or freedom) and turn agains her partner (or captor) isn't necessarily new. To be honest, it gave me "Black Mirror" vibes (which is good).
The cast is great, Sophie Thatcher does an amazing job and is a great lead - and perfect for the part - while Jack Quaid continues to do great work. I was happy to see Harvey Guillén outside his familiar Guillermo clothes ("What We Do in the Shadows").
Overall a good watch.
Cast: Sophie Thatcher, Jack Quaid, Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Harvey Guillén, Rupert Friend.
Box Office: $36.7 million
Worth a watch?: Not groundbreaking, but an entertaining watch. Definitely not for everybody, but for those who enjoy this kind of movies it worth giving it a go.

Film 2338 - Queer

Intro: Always excited to watch one of Luca Guadagnino's movies, especially when the story centers around queer characters.

Film 2338
: "Queer" (2024), Luca Guadagnino
Watched on: At the movies
Language: English
Watched with: Niamh, Debbi
Thoughts: God I didn't like this movie.
Although I read very (and various) favorable reviews online, I have to admit that for me "Queer" was a drag. The story didn't resonate with me at all and i couldn't wait for it to be over, especially the second half of it. Once we hit the jungle looking for the mysterios telepathic plant this movie lost me. But let's not get ahead of ourselves...
Three things I particularly liked about "Queer": Daniel Craig's performance - which is great throughout, the craftmenship of this production (cinematography, score, art design and set decoration) and that, for once, Luca Guadagnino is finally centering a gay story around the man's body. On the latter, I noticed that Guadagnino tends to 'hide' the male body in a way that doesn't apply when it comes to the female one: particularly, in "Call Me By Your Name" he shows a naked woman in the film, but he refused to show the two leads naked and stated "that it was a conscious aesthetic decision" (more on this topic on this article by Variety). Also, I found "Challengers" to be a bit on the queerbaiting side of things.
That said, I appreciated this time around there was no hiding behind an aesthetic decision.
For the rest, I've found "Queer" extremely long (137 min) and suprisingly uneventful considering that we even venture to the jungle. This part specifically reminded me of the movie "The Lost City of Z", where the slow pacing and lack of major events resurfaced memories of Martin Scorsese's "Silence", tho I liked that one better.
All in all, considering how eger I was to watch this movie, I can't say I wasn't disappointed: it's too long and too slow and the second half of the story is too crazy and detached from the first half for my taste. No disrespect to the 1985 novella by William S. Burroughs from which the movie is based on as I haven't read it, but this is definitely not my cup of tea.
Cast: Daniel Craig, Drew Starkey, Jason Schwartzman, Henrique Zaga, Omar Apollo, Lesley Manville.
Box Office: $3.9 million
Worth a watch?: I wouldn't reccommend it. The pacing is slow and the story takes a crazy turn towards half the running time and it goes bonkers for a good while. If you're fan of William S. Burroughs's work you could give it a go, but embrace yourself for a long watch.
Awards: Daniel Craig was nominated at the Golden Globes for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama and is currently nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role at the SAG Awards.
The movie competed at the Venice Film Festival.
Key word: Telepathy.

Film 2315 - The Apprentice

Film 2315: "The Apprentice" (2024) di Ali Abbasi
Visto: al cinema
Lingua: inglese
Compagnia: Michael
Cast: Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Strong, Maria Bakalova, Charlie Carrick, Martin Donovan.
Premi: In concorso a Cannes 2024.

Film 2284 - Challengers

Match point.
Cast: Zendaya, Josh O'Connor, Mike Faist.

Film 2274 - The Talented Mr. Ripley

Film 2274: "The Talented Mr. Ripley" (1999) di Anthony Minghella
Visto: dal computer di casa
Lingua: inglese
Compagnia: nessuno
Cast: Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Cate Blanchett, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jack Davenport, James Rebhorn, Sergio Rubini, Philip Baker Hall, Fiorello, Stefania Rocca.
Box Office: $128.8 milioni

Film 2262 - Call Me by Your Name

Film 2262: "Call Me by Your Name" (2017) di Luca Guadagnino
Visto: dal computer di casa
Lingua: inglese
Compagnia: nessuno
Me by Your Name" risiede in tre particolari aspetti:
1. la collocazione spaziale, che mi ricorda casa;
it's not meant to be);
Film 1530 - Call Me by Your Name
Film 1686 - Call Me by Your Name
Film 2262 - Call Me by Your Name

Cast: Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Michael Stuhlbarg, Amira Casar, Esther Garrel, Victoire Du Bois.
Box Office: $43.1 milioni

Cast: Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, John Ortiz, Erika Alexander, Leslie Uggams, Adam Brody, Issa Rae, Miriam Shor, Myra Lucretia Taylor, Sterling K. Brown.
Box Office: $21.8 milioni

Insomma, per me cult.

Premi: Candidato a 3 Golden Globe per Miglior film musical/commedia e canzone originale per "Bound to You" e "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me", ha vinto per quest'ultima.

Cast: Damiano Gavino, Andrea Di Luigi, Luisa Ranieri, Greta Scarano, Aurora Giovinazzo, Alvise Rigo, Giancarlo Commare.
Box Office: /

Film 2250 - All of Us Strangers

Film 2250: "All of Us Strangers" (2023) di Andrew Haigh
Visto: al cinema
Lingua: inglese
Compagnia: Paul
In sintesi: non penso si possa definire "All of Us Strangers" come una vera e propria storia d'amore gay.
Cast: Andrew Scott, Paul Mescal, Jamie Bell, Claire Foy.

Film 2211 - Red, White & Royal Blue

Cast: Taylor Zakhar Perez, Nicholas Galitzine, Clifton Collins Jr., Sarah Shahi, Rachel Hilson, Stephen Fry, Uma Thurman.
Box Office: /
Premi: Candidato all'Emmy per Outstanding Television Movie.

Film 2171 - Knock at the Cabin

Film 2171: "Knock at the Cabin" (2023) di M. Night Shyamalan
Visto: al cinema
Lingua: inglese
Cast: Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, Ben Aldridge, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Kristen Cui, Abby Quinn, Rupert Grint.
Box Office: $54.1 milioni

Film 2170 - The Whale

Film 2170: "The Whale" (2022) di Darren Aronofsky
Visto: al cinema
Lingua: inglese
Cast: Brendan Fraser, Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, Ty Simpkins, Samantha Morton.
Box Office: $36.6 milioni
