Sorta di ibrido sia dal punto di vista dei media interessati (cinema+televisione) sia da quello del tempismo (gli Oscar, per il cinema, sono a marzo, mentre gli Emmy, per la tv, sono a settembre, mentre el nomination ai Golden Globe sono addirittura a dicembre dell'anno precedente l'edizione in corso), i globi dorati sono i premi conferiti al cinema americano dalla stampa estera, talvolta dimostrando di non essere in grado di restare al passo coi tempi.
Le nomination, quest'anno presentate da Don Cheadle, Laura Dern e Anna Kendrick, vedono "La La Land" e "Moonlight" contendersi il maggior numero di premi, rispettivamente con 7 e 6 candidature; Meryl Streep riceverà il premio alla carriera (che festeggia insieme alla sua 30esima candidatura officiale per "Florence Foster Jenkins") e la cerimonia di premiazione che decreterà ufficialmente i vicnitori sarà, invece, presentata da Jimmy Fallon l'8 gennaio 2017.
