Thoughts: I've always been a massive fan of the "Final Destination" franchise, especially the first movie (from sequel #3 onwards I can't really tell them apart to be honest). I still remember to this day that time my dad took me to the movies to watch it back in 2000: I was 13 and the opening sequence scared the sh*t out of me, to the point that I still wait until the day I'm packing to go somewhere before removing the tag of my previous flight from my suitcase. It's bad luck and "Final Destination" taught me that. (It's obviously a joke, but is it?)
Anyway, I obviously got really excited when they announced the new film, aiming to reboot the franchise. But with horror movies, reboots and sequels... you never know. And although the reviews were strong, I feel like you can never really 100% trust critics.
So, is "Final Destination: Bloodlines" good? It is, it's great fun and and an exhilarating ride for what it is. Meaning, it's not going to be entertaining for everyone - not only it's a horror film, it's also a very specific type of horror, there's a formula behind it and if you don't enjoy it, then there's no point.
Me being me, yeah, I quite liked it. It doesn't match the level of great camp and storytelling genius of the first movie, but it's definitely capable of delivering a very similar experience, combined with a bigger budget, better technology and a greater narrative scope. In fact, "Bloodlines" connects itself to the franchise by linking one of its most iconic characters, William Bludworth the mortician played by the late Tony Todd (to whom this movie is dedicated), to its opening disaster. Seldom this kind of fan-service is done in such a smooth way.
Overall, "Final Destination: Bloodlines" is a great addition to the franchise and a much needed injection of fresh horror to its lore. It's not a masterpiece, it doesn't reinvente the genre, but it definitely reignites the interest in the "Final Destination" IP. And I'm all here for it!

Worth a watch?: If you're a fan of the original movie or the franchise it spawned, "Final Destination: Bloodlines" can't be missed. It was quite fun to watch it on the big screen to be honest, but I'm sure it works as well on a big TV at home. Prepare for more to come, a sequel has already been announced.

Film 1736 - Skyscraper

Intro: Altra seratina casalinga in compagnia di un film, questa volta ci siamo concessi un titolo abbastanza recente e che nessuno di noi aveva già visto.

In sintesi: di solito mi gusto con immenso piacere pellicole come questa, coccolato dalla totale innecessità di concentrazione e sforzo mentale, ma a tutto c'è un limite. Dove sembra non esserci un limite, invece, è alla stupidità e alla spavalda noncuranza della plausibilità della sceneggiatura di "Skyscraper", un prodotto che si presenta come di facile consumo, sì, ma esagera talmente tanto nella messa in scena che sfocia inevitabilmente nel ridicolo. E parliamoci chiaro, non è solo a causa della scena - tanto pubblicizzata anche nel trailer - del salto nel vuoto compiuto da un uomo con un arto artificiale (la gamba), è proprio nel suo insieme che la storia non funziona: è tutto estremizzato ed esagerato, tanto caricato all'ennesima potenza che ricorda titoli di decadi precedenti e che pensavamo superati.
Invece questo film si arrampica su una struttura narrativa che punta tutto su un climax visivo e che sacrifica il resto in nome della spettacolarità testosteronica, figlio di una vecchia retorica machista che sa di stantio fin dall'inizio. Aggiungo che Dwayne Johnson, con all'attivo 10 titoli da protagonista in 4 anni, ha decisamente saturato il mercato cinematografico con la sua presenta. Non sarebbe tanto un problema la sua sovraesposizione, non fosse che riproponendo sempre lo stesso identico personaggio stereotipato del muscoloso risolvi situazioni estreme non aggiunge davvero niente alla sua filmografia finendo per darsi la zappa sui piedi. E "Skyscraper" ne è un evidente esempio.

Vale o non vale: Brutto, banale e inefficacemente spettacolare, "Skyscraper" tenta senza successo di creare tensione proponendo un action thriller ad alta quota che finisce per implodere sull'inconsistenza della sua trama che vive di cliché e banalità. Gli effetti speciali non bastano.
