Film 2349 - The Substance

Intro: I wan't sure about rewatching this movie already, but Michael really wanted to watch it and, to be fair, I couldn't say no. Because, after all, this was one of my favourite movies from last year.

Thoughts: I'm honestly so glad I rewatched this. I think the first time around "The Substance" was more an experience, rather than a film. I remembered I felt I was going through a rollercoaster during my first watch at the movies, but this time I knew what to expect and, in a way, I focused more on other aspects of this wild ride.
First, I paid more attention to Margaret Qualley's performance: she was definitely deserving of an Oscar nomination. Maybe not a win, but her role is iconic and there's no Elisabeth Sparkle without Sue. Remember: they are one.
Second, I paid more attention to the soundtrack and the visuals in general. I think "The Substance" does an amazing job at defyining itself through images and sound, not just the performances. It features a lot of ommages to other films, probably the easiest one to spot is "The Shining". Visually it's an extremely interesting movie, the colours are so bright and the music makes them feel even more "alive".
Thirdly, I reconsidered some of my previous concerns regarding the ending - there's a lot of "Carrie" in that live Christmas special - and although gruesome and gory, it really fits this story, complementing a crazy, wild ride in a way that is so unexpected as it is overwhelming at first. On a second watch, knowing what's about to happen, you focus less on the shock of what you're witnessing and more on the absurdity that is to put your life at risk to fulfill a (male) fantasy and pursue fame at all costs.

Worth a watch?: Definitely not a movie for the general crowd, but an interesting and challenging movie nonetheless. On my second watch I loved it even more: Demi Moore needs to win that Oscar now. We'll see on Sunday what happens, but after her win at SAG last Sunday, it looks like she might have the support to achieve this amazing feat. What a journey for her. #TeamDemi

The movie is currently nominated for Best Foreign Film at this year's César Awards.

Intro: Non sapevo davvero cosa aspettarmi da questa pellicola, ma dalle recensioni sembrava davvero un evento da non perdere.

In sintesi: forse non un film perfetto, ma assolutamente il titolo della stagione.
Inaspettato, assurdo, macrabo e, al contempo, in grando di veicolare chiaramente il proprio messaggio - c'è chi addirittura dice tropo poco velatamente - "The Substance" non è un prodotto per tutti i palati, ma ha il grande pregio di sapere di novità. Il che, visto il recente panorama cinematografico, è già di per sé un miracolo.
La premessa è intrigante: showgirl con carriera in declino, decide di iniettarsi una sostanza in grado di liberare una versione migliore di se stessi. Entrambe le versioni coesistono, ma mai allo stesso tempo perché quando una è sveglia, l'altra è in una sorta di coma. Questo ciclo si ripete settimanalmente e, in teroria, se si rispetta le regole, tutto dovrebbe filare liscio. Ovviamente non sarà così.
Interessante sia a livello narrativo che estetico (c'è anche un po' di "The Shining" nei vari corridoi televisivi), "The Substance" funziona alla grande, ma funziona anche e soprattutto grazie a una Demi Moore mai così decisa a mettersi in gioco. Sicuramente qualche nomination dovrebbe uscirne, ma il vero colpaccio sarebbe la candidatura a non protagonista agli Oscar. È ancora molto presto per parlarne, ma io un po' ci spero.
Uniche critiche personali, ho trovato l'inizio un po' lento mentre il finale qualche volta mi ha perso. Non in toto, però il passaggio da totale fragilità fisica del personaggio di Elisabeth (Moore) a improvvisamente un combattimento da pellicola d'azione con lanci contro le pareti e botte da orbi mi ha lasciato perplesso. Poi capisco che sia tutto in chiave assurda e faccia parte del finale sopra le righe, violento e splatter, però il cambio di passo è talmente repentino che lì per lì mi ha infastidito.
Detto ciò, sceneggiatura e regia pazzesca di Coralie Fargeat, grande colonna sonora, visione estetica generale chiarissima e d'impatto e due performance complementari e che si complimentano grazie Demi Moore e Margaret Qualley che davvero in questo film danno tutte se stesse.

Vale o non vale: Non per tutti, ma sicuramente un'esperienza. Per chi non si lascia spaventare da un po' di slatter e gore qua e là, "The Substance" è l'evento della stagione. Da non perdere.
Premi: In concorso a Cannes 2024, dove Coralie Fargeat ha vinto per la Miglior sceneggiatura.
