Film 2484 - Mortal Kombat II

Intro: When I was in Italy back in May, I rewatched the first film in this series to get ready for the sequel. Then, when I got back, I missed my chance to go to the movies - to watch "The Sheep Detectives", of all movies... - and didn't get to see it. So, as soon as the right moment presented itself, I gave this film a go.

Thoughts: To my surprise, I actually quite enjoyed the first "Mortal Kombat" and was extremely curious to see its sequel. I read reasonably good things about it, but nothing too enthusiastic, and the box office performance wasn't stellar, so I didn't know what to expect.
Fact is, I loved this movie! I think, even more so than the first one, it's great at delivering a story that's closer to its source material: we finally see the tournament happen, the players go against each other and die, and all their best moves are performed on the big screen in an environment that makes sense for what this product is: a film based on a fighting video game.
I was particularly impressed by the visual aesthetic of the film. All the settings for the fight scenes are great and feel very unique while, color-wise, I thought "Mortal Kombat II" does a great job of highlighting the different factions, worlds, costumes and elements that uniquely identify each character, in a way that doesn't feel like a simple copy-paste from the game.
Additionally, I think this sequel shows that the producers actually listened to what the audience asked for after the first film came out: the tournament, the fights, and the lore of the source material, rather than just fan service. And I believe the story does a great job of incorporating all these elements together.
That said, "Mortal Kombat II" has its flaws, although I wasn't too bothered by them. I personally struggled with the number of characters the story deals with, to the point that at times I couldn't keep up. Also, some of the characters from the previous film were just there to get slaughtered which, yeah, you could see coming from a mile away, but I thought it was bold in some cases. (spoiler) Particularly, bringing back Cole Young (Lewis Tan), aka the main protagonist of the previous film, only to have him massacred the first time he competes in the tournament was a bold move. It really surprised me and, yeah, I loved it. He was a terrible protagonist, so I think it was a good move to shift the focus to the more charismatic and entertaining Johnny Cage (Karl Urban).
All in all, I really enjoyed "Mortal Kombat II" and I can't wait to watch it again. I only wish this movie had gotten a bit more love at the box office to justify a third outing. At this stage, I'm not sure it's gonna happen, but I have my fingers crossed.

Worth a watch?: If you enjoyed the first one, I'm sure you're gonna love this sequel even more. The story is tighter, the action sequences are amazing and, in general, "Mortal Kombat II" is better paced, has found the right protagonist and is a clear improvement over the first film. I found it visually compelling, and the soundtrack is a banger. Currently, I'm obsessed with the end credits song. I highly recommend it if you enjoy club/techno music (Techno Syndrome 2026 (feat. Ed Boon) - Olivier Adams).

Thoughts: Still love this movie. I watched it for the first time back at DCU during Covid - so yeah, from home - and I remember being really surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
I mean, it's not perfect by any means, but it's a fun, easy ride. The fight scenes are good, the whole vibe isn't too serious, and for almost 2 hours you forget about everything and bask in the sweet memories of your childhood when playing videogames was one of your biggest concerns.
For what it is, "Mortal Kombat" delivers an uncomplicated spectacle that works and balances enough references to the OG game with new, cool scenes perfect for the big screen.

Worth a watch?: Although some performances are a bit stiff - but are we really here for the performances? - the fight scenes work, and some of them are actually quite cool to watch (and gruesome, let me tell you). I enjoyed it more than I expected the first time and enjoyed it even more this second time around. If you loved the videogame, this is for you.

Film 1345 - Power Rangers

Sono sempre stato un grande fan di questo franchise, sin da piccolo. Per cui non potevo perdermi questo tentativo di reboot contemporaneo, anche se non nutrivo particolari speranze...

Pensieri: I Power Rangers nel 2017 non sono così pessimi come si potrebbe, invece, pensare. Certo, non hanno lo spessore degli ultimi blockbuster o superhero movie Marvel, né l'aura maledetta di un DC Comics, però il tentativo di svecchiamento dei 5 ragazzi multicolor che combattono gli alieni ha un suo certo perché. Per riassumere, l'idea di base è buona, la realizzazione meno.
Come reboot il prodotto non è male, Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks) funziona - anche se è una supercattiva ancora debole -, il gruppo di ragazzi è affiatato, la dose massiccia di tecnologia aliena e kitsch c'è... Nel caso ci fosse un futuro per questa saga (uhm), dovrebbero sicuramente cercare di migliorare l'aspetto action, aumentando le sequenze di combattimento, e velocizzare certe parti della trama per rendere il franchise un po' più conforme agli standard attuali e meno alle reminescenze anni '90.
In ogni caso ho particolarmente apprezzato la scena iniziale che vede Jason/Red Ranger (Dacre Montgomery) fuggire da scuola dopo una bravata che coinvolge una mucca. La sequenza è piuttosto adrenalinica: in macchina insieme al ragazzo, la telecamera continua inesorabilmente a ruotare su se stessa permettendoci di seguire l'azione come se fossimo su un ottovolante. Gira tutto e capita qualsiasi cosa fino ad un grave incidente (curiosamente il primo di una lunga serie) e anche se per il protagonista non finisce bene, per noi che guardiamo è una premessa carica d'azione.
Come dicevo, la storia parte letteralmente con il piede sull'acceleratore, ma in realtà per il resto è meno adrenalinica di quanto mi sarei aspettato. In compenso è ricolma di momenti dedicati alla riflessione dei ragazzi sulla propria condizione, alla conoscenza reciproca e alla sperimentazione della nuova realtà di Ranger. Per quanto la sceneggiatura sia spesso scricchiolante, ammetto di aver trovato apprezzabile che la trama non abbia sottratto tempo alla contestualizzazione dei ragazzi e della loro situazione. I cinque, poi, sono un gruppo particolarmente eterogeneo e ben assortito e la produzione non si è risparmiata etnie e declinazioni personali (malattie e orientamenti sessuali inclusi), scegliendo per un politically correct che è anche un allargare il più possibile il bacino di spettatori. In ogni caso non tutti i ragazzi sono particolarmente portati alla recitazione (vero, Pink Ranger?), ma all'interno del gruppo la cosa rimane più celata.
Dal punto di vista dello svecchiamento del prodotto, credo che la colonna sonora sia un altro degli elementi a favore. Le scelte sono molto curate e si vede che si è cercato di attirare, attraverso questa mossa, il pubblico giovane e non solo quello di vecchi appassionati.
In compenso, un aspetto che ho trovato particolarmente negativo è quello degli effetti speciali che, non c'è modo di girarci intorno, sono brutti. Da un prodotto costato 100 milioni di dollari mi aspetto davvero molto di più. Anche se già da poster e immagini promozionali si capiva che il risultato fosse sotto la media.
Per concludere, un paio di considerazioni extra. Innanzitutto l'anima curiosamente dark che ha la pellicola all'inizio: tinte tra il thriller e l'horror (non mancano colpi di scena accompagnati da picchi di audio per far spavento), oltre che una caccia al tesoro che porta con sé un mistero da risolvere. Insomma, non solo fantascienza e nostalgia. A proposito di quest'ultimo punto, la seconda considerazione. Ci sono due momenti che guardano al passato, uno bello e uno meno, rispettivamente il passaggio obbligato del cameo dei precedenti protagonisti (riconosciamo i vecchi Pink Ranger e Green/White Ranger, Amy Jo Johnson e Jason David Frank) e la scena in cui parte la vecchia sequenza musicale che accompagnava la discesa in campo dei Megazord (qui francamente fuori contesto, anche se un evidente omaggio).
Insomma, i "Power Rangers" sono tornati al cinema tentando un colpaccio che non c'è stato. Non credo che la produzione abbia troppo da rimproverarsi, di fatto il risultato finale è un capolavoro rispetto al precedente appuntamento cinematografico "Power Rangers - Il film". Forse, e questa è la mia opinione, non c'era così tanto interesse nei confronti di questo prodotto e, in generale, relativamente agli eroi della Saban. Rievocarli a più di 20 anni dall'esplosione del fenomeno in occidente poteva essere una mossa azzardata, soprattutto se mal gestita come i precedenti progetti. Qui si vede che lo sforzo c'è stato, ma non è stato sufficiente a conquistare e convincere anche le nuove generazioni ad abbracciare un fenomento che, per tantissimi, è stato il simbolo di infanzia e adolescenza. Oggi, probabilmente, i supereori sono altri.

Consigli: I fan non dovrebbero farselo scappare, soprattutto perché si fa leva su un effetto nostalgia che regala qualche connessione con le precedenti declinasioni statunitensi del franchise. Per tutti gli altri, si tratta di un buon prodotto d'intrattenimento che, seppur imperfetto, ha il pregio di intrattenere con una certa dose di divertimento e spensieratezza. Il risultato finale è più debole dei recenti blockbuster con supereroi, ma lo sforzo per portare sullo schermo qualcosa di "nuovo" c'è e si vede e dando una chance a questo titolo non credo si rimarrà delusi. Certo, tenendo presente il tipo di prodotto cui siamo di fronte.
