Film 2356 - Clueless

Intro: A lot has happened lately and couldn't find the energy to sit down and write about movies. I don't know, I just didn't have it in me. It's been a strange few weeks and didn't feel like myself really. Here's my first attempt at reconnecting to the things I love.

Thoughts: Funny enough, I've never seen this movie before. I don't know why, I definitely had nothing against it and God knows I love a comedy movie about a bunnch of teenagers in high school. I think it's possibly because this wasn't necessarily a big movie hit in Italy while I was growing up and then never thought of actually sitting down and watching it. But Netflix fixed that for me in a way.
After finally watching "Clueless", I have to admit I really had a good time. Alicia Silverstone is great in it and it was insane discovering how many famous actors are featured here. It's a great teen movie, but not only that, as it includes very effective satire and comedic bits, plus extremely quotable lines and iconic moments that clearly have influenced many other films after this one came out. Definitely a cult classic.

Worth a watch?: I really enjoyed this watch, it's fun and funny, well acted and smarter than it would appear on a first look. I'll definitely watch it again.
Awards: 2 MTV Movie + TV Awards wins for Best Female Performance and Most Desirable Female (both for Silverstone), out of 4 noms (Best Movie and Best Comedic Performance).

Film 2302 - The Craft

Intro: Weekend casalingo (tanto pioveva, sai che novità) all'insegna di non uno, non due, ma bensì tre film. Eccoci al terzo e ultimo titolo.

In sintesi: avevo sempre sentito parlare di questo film, ma non c'era mai stata l'occasione giusta di recuperarlo. Essendo nel catalogo di Amazon Prime, abbiamo deciso di recuperarlo domenica per pranzo.
Onestamente non sapevo cosa aspettarmi, immaginavo "The Craft" potesse essere una sorta di incrocio tra "Practical Magic", "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" e "Clueless" e, in effetti, tutto sommato delle somiglianze ci sono anche. In realtà, però, il film è molto più cupo e anche se qualche momento più prettamente da commedia c'è, in generale il tono è sempre piuttosto serioso e a tinte horror, che non mi aspettavo. Il risultato finale, però, ammetto che non mi abbai convinto.
Innanzitutto, ho trovato l'interpretazione di Fairuza Balk abbastanza irritante. Sopra le righe, esagerata e sempre incazzata, la sua Nancy è la leader di un gruppo di giovani streghe per cui si fatica davvero a provare ogni sorta di simpatia, anche una volta scoperte le difficile dinamiche familiari che giustificano il suo animo ribelle. Per carenza di un'altra espressione, l'ho trovata antipatica.
Il resto del gruppo è così così: Bonnie (Neve Campbell) cambia completamente personalità tra la prima e la seconda parte del film, Rochelle (Rachel True) potrebbe non esserci che è uguale, mentre la protagonista Sarah (Robin Tunney) è lessa come pochi o, per meglio dire, manca di carisma. Senza contare che, inseme, il gruppo presenta una vena di cattiveria (anche tra le stesse ragazze) fine a se stessa che alla lunga infastidisce, proprio perché per la maggior parte del tempo ingiustificata.
Insomma, anche se certo non mi aspettavo un capolavoro, mi ero immaginato un prodotto diverso, una pellicola dalle atmosfere più leggere e i toni certamente più spensierati e divertiti. Non che l'elemento dark sia il problema naturalmente, ma considerato quanto si prende sul serio la storia, il risultato davvero non è granché.

Box Office: $55.6 milioni
Vale o non vale: "The Craft" ha la nomea di film di cult, ma non credo che tutti lo descriverebbero in questo modo. E' un po' datato su alcune tematiche, ha un vibe molto vintage (che personalmente apprezzo molto), ma manca di quel tono spassoso che forse l'avrebbe reso più digeribile. Si lascia vedere, ma sicuramente non un titolo da recuperare a tutti i costi.
