Film 2418 - Bugonia

Intro: A new Yorgos Lanthimos' movie is always an event, so I had to go and see it.

Thoughts: It was nice to go and see this movie at a different venue than my usual one, the Lighthouse. Unlike Cineworld, it meant sharing the experience with a different crowd: no one left the screening mid-show to go to the toilet and the room was quiet the whole time, everybody focused on the story, in silence. As an avid cinemagoer that values these things, it honestly made a difference. (There's nothing I hate more than people talking or laughing or coming and going to the bathroom during a movie.)
"Bugonia" is not my favourite film by Yorgos Lanthimos — I think that is still "The Lobster", yet I appreciated this new story. It's extremely well executed and tells an interesting story that conveys a green message, together with the satire of current corporate values. On top of that, it features the performances of two great actors at the top of their game: Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons are fantastic here — I imagine an Oscar nomination for both of them is definitely in the cards. Particularly, Emma Stone proves once again why she is one of the best actresses working in films today. She's brilliant in almost every role she plays (better forget about that "Aloha" movie) and here she once again delivers a career best. And it's not just because she went all in by shaving her head for real (which Natalie Portman did as well in another great movie that was a bit too overlooked in my opinion, "V for Vendetta").
I know "Bugonia" has already been called a masterpiece by critics, I'm not sure I'm there yet. I liked it, I particularly enjoyed the plot twist at the end — I mean, I'm not sure how surprising it was considering the story was pointing in the opposite way the whole time — but it isn't necessarily the kind of movie I would rewatch multiple times. It's interesting, well-written and acted, and tells a story that feels different from most things that came out this year. It reminded me a lot of Darren Aronofsky's "Mother!", for example. But, as I said, it's not my favourite (to stay close to the Lanthimos lore).

Worth a watch?: One of the most talked-about movies of the year, one has to see it. I'm sure it's going to play a big role in the upcoming awards season, so better be ahead of the curve and watch it. It's a very peculiar film, like Lanthimos' usually are. "Bugonia" is definitely not for everybody, some may consider it too artsy or brainy, but to those who appreciate this kind of stories, it's worth watching.
Awards: In copmpetition at Cannes 2025, it won the Green Drop Award. Nominated for Best Feature at the 2025 Gotham Independent Film Award.

Film 2356 - Clueless

Intro: A lot has happened lately and couldn't find the energy to sit down and write about movies. I don't know, I just didn't have it in me. It's been a strange few weeks and didn't feel like myself really. Here's my first attempt at reconnecting to the things I love.

Thoughts: Funny enough, I've never seen this movie before. I don't know why, I definitely had nothing against it and God knows I love a comedy movie about a bunnch of teenagers in high school. I think it's possibly because this wasn't necessarily a big movie hit in Italy while I was growing up and then never thought of actually sitting down and watching it. But Netflix fixed that for me in a way.
After finally watching "Clueless", I have to admit I really had a good time. Alicia Silverstone is great in it and it was insane discovering how many famous actors are featured here. It's a great teen movie, but not only that, as it includes very effective satire and comedic bits, plus extremely quotable lines and iconic moments that clearly have influenced many other films after this one came out. Definitely a cult classic.

Worth a watch?: I really enjoyed this watch, it's fun and funny, well acted and smarter than it would appear on a first look. I'll definitely watch it again.
Awards: 2 MTV Movie + TV Awards wins for Best Female Performance and Most Desirable Female (both for Silverstone), out of 4 noms (Best Movie and Best Comedic Performance).

Film 2113 - Senior Year

Intro: Avevo iniziato a guardare questo film su Netflix, per poi dover interrompere. Nel mezzo ho visto "Alex Strangelove", per poi ritorna a questo per finirlo. Che confusione...

In sintesi: "Senior Year" è una gran boiata, ma ha due assi nella manica: la protagonista Rebel Wilson e qualche momento musicale al sapore di nostalgia che risollevano un po' tutta l'operazione.
Nello specifico, la Wilson si rivela sempre di più un'ottima protagonista per questo tipo di produzioni commerciali di facile consumo, brillante e sempre sufficientemente "stramba" da suscitare una certa dose di tenerezza. Non è un tipo di comicità per tutti, mi rendo conto, ma in questo caso sono contento di vederle riconosciuto un ruolo che vada oltre l'essere (stata) in sovrappeso e che le regali il ruolo da protagonista al di là dell'aspetto fisico e della comicità legata a quest'ultimo che per anni ne ha contraddistinto i ruoli cinematografici. In questo senso "Senior Year" ricorda un po' il film "Isn't It Romantic" sempre con la Wilson e sempre di Netflix, a sua volta simile per tematica alla pellicola "I Feel Pretty" con Amy Schumer (e probabilmente "Amore a prima svista" con Gwyneth Paltrow e Jack Black).
Inoltre la scena in cui viene ricreato l'iconico video di "(You Drive Me) Crazy" di Britney Spears è una chicca da non sottovalutare (e onestamente la ragione che mi ha spinto a recuperare il film).
Per il resto, diciamocelo pure, "Senior Year" ricade perfettamente in tutta quella serie di stereotipi da commedia facile facile in cui il sogno di una vita della protagonista trascina la storia fino a quando la vita non le farà capire che tutto quello che stava cercando era in realtà altro.
Non certo orginale, ma si è visto di peggio.

Film 1669 - Book Club

Intro: 3 premi Oscar e una candidata all'Oscar come protagoniste, un'idea di base simpatica e piccante per una commedia sulla terza età che promette non pochi momenti divertenti e disinvolti... Dovevo assolutamente vederlo!

In sintesi: un inaspettato successo commerciale per una commedia che mette in prima linea quattro magnifiche protagoniste e il loro club del libro, per l'occasione inaspettatamente a tinte osé. A trainare questo "Book Club", infatti, è una trovata molto semplice: cosa succede quando quattro signore completamente diverse tra loro decidono di dedicarsi alla lettura delle avventure erotiche nientemeno che del Sig. Christian Grey?
Il pretesto è simpatico e Keaton, Fonda, Bergen e Steenburgen sono attrici meravigliose in grado di valorizzare la pellicola che, di per sé, è meno riuscita di quanto non mi sarei aspettato; in generale, comunque, il film funziona abbastanza bene e consegna al suo pubblico un prodotto divertente e, per una volta, incentrato su un gruppo di protagoniste tutto femminile e over 60, il tutto per un risultato finale non esilarante, ma in ogni caso piacevole.
Cast: Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, Mary Steenburgen, Craig T. Nelson, Andy García, Don Johnson, Ed Begley Jr., Richard Dreyfuss, Alicia Silverstone.

Vale o non vale: Sicuramente un titolo che vale principalmente per il grande cast che porta sul grande schermo, un gruppo di attori che si mette in gioco e aggiunge valore al prodotto finale. Il pretesto comico è intrigante e parrebbe promettere scintille, anche se in realtà il film risulta meno brillante di quanto non appaia dal trailer. Detto questo, un prodotto simpatico e fresco che ricorda, ancora una volta, che la vita dopo i 60 anni continua.

Film 1514 - The Killing of a Sacred Deer

Intro: I was intrigued by the the incomprehensible plot and the tense trailer, not to mention the good reviews and the best screenplay win at the Cannes Film Festival last year. That's why I was so keen to see the latest Lanthimos directorial effort.

Briefly: tense, but particularly slow, "The Killing of a Sacred Deer" aims to be a thriller with horror vibes even though it just manages to exacerbate the viewers with its deviant plot. In my opinion it's more boring than scaring;
Farrell and Kidman are beautiful actors and they carry the story as far as they can, the problem is that nothing really happens here until the end and it's frustrating that you have to wait for the very last minutes to get the plot moving forward. Probably it was one of Lanthimos goals to induce these kind of emotions in the viewers, yet still you really need to be committed to the cause to actually enjoying it;
"The Killing of a Sacred Deer" has a really powerful finale that partially redeems its previous 90minutes of nothing happening while you wait for the good stuff to come, but I don't think it's enough to appreciate a 2 hour-long movie that leads nowhere for the most of its running time. I think "The Lobster" has a powerful message underneath that is missing here. And you can definitely feel it.

Worth watching?: Yorgos Lanthimos fans will find it interesting and probably entertaining, but for those who don't know the previous Greek director works it's probably better if they start with "The Lobster" first: "The Killing of a Sacred Deer" is even slower and less fun.
Awards: Best Screenplay at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival (tied with Lynne Ramsay for You Were Never Really Here).

Film 816 - Beauty Shop

Pensieri: Come al solito le commedie all-black americane sono un concentrato di stereotipi, ghetto e mosse da vere signore della strada, il che mi rende il tutto sempre molto gradito. Anche qui, naturalmente, non ci si esime dai diktat di genere e il risultato finale di "Beauty Shop", assolutamente insufficiente per carità, è comunque perfettamente nel mood.
Una commedia leggera fatta di buoni sentimenti, momenti di sorellanza spinta e di accoglienza (dei bianchi nel "mondo nero"), per un risultato finale che ha necessariamente il lieto fine. Non c'è, quindi, molto da dire a proposito di questo prodotto commerciale che mira quasi esclusivamente al target umano che rappresenta, evitando ogni tipo di idea innovativa o tentativo di differenziarsi dalla massa di titoli fotocopia già riversati sul mercato. Non c'è niente di male in questo, è chiaro fin da subito che l'intento primario qui è raccontare una favoletta che vada bene per 105 minuti privi di pensieri e che faccia un minimo sorridere. Insomma, puro intrattenimento che, se piace il genere, non fa alcun danno. E Queen Latifah mette sempre di buon umore, anche se non riesco a spiegarmi il perché.

Consigli: Cast quasi tutto black in gran spolvero (Alicia Silverstone, Andie MacDowell, Alfre Woodard, Mena Suvari, Sherri Shepherd, Adele Givens, Kevin Bacon, Djimon Hounsou) per questa commedia dei buoni sentimenti su Queen Latifah grande hairstylist che decide di emanciparsi dal dispotico e omosessualissimo Jorge e aprire un suo proprio salone dove acconciare i capelli tra chiacchiere e "cose da neri". Un micro cameo anche del premio Oscar Octavia Spencer per un film superficiale, stupidino, ma assolutamente innoquo. Va bene per un momento di relax in cui il cervello non va spento, ma dimenticato.
