Thoughts: I've watched this movie a bunch of times already and always find it funny. It's not a masterpiece or anything, but it's almost like a comfort watch that, at the right time, delivers exactly what I need. Similar to other films like "21 Jump Street", "22 Jump Street" or "We're the Millers".
So I guess the vibe was once again right for me, as I really enjoyed rewatching this first "Neighbors" - the sequel isn't that good - after so many years since I last saw it.
I think Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne have great chemistry together, and watching the two of them go up against the other screen duo, Zac Efron and Dave Franco, is a pleasure. My personal highlights: the airbag and milking scenes. Hilarious.
All in all, a solid comedy that still works more than 10 years later. And these days, that's quite the feat.

This movie is 30 years old and still works marvelously: extremely entertaining, greatly shot, led my a perfect Tom Cruise and, most importantly, "Mission: Impossible" starts with one of the most shocking twists that you don't see coming.
Overall, a great cinematic experience.

Film 2356 - Clueless

Intro: A lot has happened lately and couldn't find the energy to sit down and write about movies. I don't know, I just didn't have it in me. It's been a strange few weeks and didn't feel like myself really. Here's my first attempt at reconnecting to the things I love.

Thoughts: Funny enough, I've never seen this movie before. I don't know why, I definitely had nothing against it and God knows I love a comedy movie about a bunnch of teenagers in high school. I think it's possibly because this wasn't necessarily a big movie hit in Italy while I was growing up and then never thought of actually sitting down and watching it. But Netflix fixed that for me in a way.
After finally watching "Clueless", I have to admit I really had a good time. Alicia Silverstone is great in it and it was insane discovering how many famous actors are featured here. It's a great teen movie, but not only that, as it includes very effective satire and comedic bits, plus extremely quotable lines and iconic moments that clearly have influenced many other films after this one came out. Definitely a cult classic.

Film 2309 - I Know What You Did Last Summer

Intro: Dato che Michael non è un fan degli horror, ma sto provando ad introdurlo al genere con molta (moooolta) calma, eccoci alla seconda visione di un film dell'orrore (non troppo pauroso cosicché anche lui potesse gustarsi la visione).

In sintesi: dopo aver visto "Thanksgiving" qualche settimana prima, mi era subito tornato alla mente questo primo "I Know What You Did Last Summer". Neanche a dirlo, mi è subito tornata voglia di rivederlo.
In realtà non è che me lo ricordassi benissimo sinceramente e, azi, la rivelazione del killer alla fine mi ha anche lasciato alquanto sorpreso. Non riuscivo, infatti, a ricordare chi fosse l'assassino e, fino all'ultimo, dalla trama non riuscivo nemmeno a ipotizzare chi potesse di fatto essere l'artefice di tutti gli omicidi: per forza, il colpo di scena finale è tanto sorprendente quanto random (ovvero un personaggio mai visto prima che appare solo per "prendersi" la colpa di tutti i delitti commessi).
A parte questo aspetto della trama che non mi ha proprio soddisfatto, per il resto "I Know What You Did Last Summer" è esattamente quello che ti aspetti e, per quanto molto della trama lasci con delle perplessità (in particolare i poteri quasi soprannaturali dell'omicida, capace di apparire e scomparire senza lasciare traccia o riempire per poi svuotare il bagagliaio di una macchina di granchi appena pescati nel giro di letteralmente un paio di minuti... lasciando il bagagliaio miracolosamente asciutto), il risultato finale è comunque soddisfacente, anche grazie a un cast composto da giovani promesse del cinema che già qui dimostrano il proprio magnetico carisma.

Anche perché ormai Halloween è alle porte...
Premi: Sarah Michelle Gellar candidata all'MTV Movie + TV Awards nella categoria Best Breakthrough Performance.

Film 2302 - The Craft

Intro: Weekend casalingo (tanto pioveva, sai che novità) all'insegna di non uno, non due, ma bensì tre film. Eccoci al terzo e ultimo titolo.

In sintesi: avevo sempre sentito parlare di questo film, ma non c'era mai stata l'occasione giusta di recuperarlo. Essendo nel catalogo di Amazon Prime, abbiamo deciso di recuperarlo domenica per pranzo.
Onestamente non sapevo cosa aspettarmi, immaginavo "The Craft" potesse essere una sorta di incrocio tra "Practical Magic", "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" e "Clueless" e, in effetti, tutto sommato delle somiglianze ci sono anche. In realtà, però, il film è molto più cupo e anche se qualche momento più prettamente da commedia c'è, in generale il tono è sempre piuttosto serioso e a tinte horror, che non mi aspettavo. Il risultato finale, però, ammetto che non mi abbai convinto.
Innanzitutto, ho trovato l'interpretazione di Fairuza Balk abbastanza irritante. Sopra le righe, esagerata e sempre incazzata, la sua Nancy è la leader di un gruppo di giovani streghe per cui si fatica davvero a provare ogni sorta di simpatia, anche una volta scoperte le difficile dinamiche familiari che giustificano il suo animo ribelle. Per carenza di un'altra espressione, l'ho trovata antipatica.
Il resto del gruppo è così così: Bonnie (Neve Campbell) cambia completamente personalità tra la prima e la seconda parte del film, Rochelle (Rachel True) potrebbe non esserci che è uguale, mentre la protagonista Sarah (Robin Tunney) è lessa come pochi o, per meglio dire, manca di carisma. Senza contare che, inseme, il gruppo presenta una vena di cattiveria (anche tra le stesse ragazze) fine a se stessa che alla lunga infastidisce, proprio perché per la maggior parte del tempo ingiustificata.
Insomma, anche se certo non mi aspettavo un capolavoro, mi ero immaginato un prodotto diverso, una pellicola dalle atmosfere più leggere e i toni certamente più spensierati e divertiti. Non che l'elemento dark sia il problema naturalmente, ma considerato quanto si prende sul serio la storia, il risultato davvero non è granché.

Vale o non vale: "The Craft" ha la nomea di film di cult, ma non credo che tutti lo descriverebbero in questo modo. E' un po' datato su alcune tematiche, ha un vibe molto vintage (che personalmente apprezzo molto), ma manca di quel tono spassoso che forse l'avrebbe reso più digeribile. Si lascia vedere, ma sicuramente non un titolo da recuperare a tutti i costi.

Film 2219 - The Ring

Intro: Ormai completamente immerso in una "bolla" di paura da suggestione halloweeniana, ho convinto Kate a guardare insieme a me questo (e il prossimo) film in due pomeriggi casalinghi all'insegna di alcune vecchie guardie - ormai si può dire - del cinema dell'orrore.

In sintesi: ho sempre adorato questo film che, nell'ormai lontano 2002, non mancai di vedere al cinema.
Non importa quante volte abbia già visto "The Ring", a ogni visione rimango sempre soddisfatto dalla storia, la fotografia bluastra e super malinconica e dalla magnifica performance di un'allora sconosciuta Naomi Watts. Il dvd che ho a casa a Bologna è sicuramente consumato a causa di tutte le volte che ho rivisto questo film. A questo, però, punto mi sorge una domanda: avrei dovuto farne una copia?

Vale o non vale: Premesso che non ho mai visto l'originale giapponese, questo remake americano a me a convinto dalla prima visione. La storia è assurda quanto basta, spaventosa più per i vari traumi psicologici che secondo i canoni del genere horror, adoro che la storia sembri finita dopo la scena nel pozzo ma in realtà continui e regali un finale molto più soddisfacente del previsto e, in generale, trovo che "The Ring" funzioni su tutta la linea. Poi con tutti i vari sequel si sono giocati la qualità generale del franchise (del resto Gore Verbinski lascia la regia dopo questo primo film), ma questo primo episodio è una bomba. Anche a 20 anni di distanza.
Premi: 2 candidature agli MTV Movie + TV Awards per Miglior film e Miglior cattivo (Daveigh Chase).

Film 2210 - Bring It On

Intro: Di nuovo in aereo, questa volta sulla via del ritorno, scelgo un film che Ciarán aveva visto all'andata e mi aveva consigliato di recuperare.

Film 2210: "Bring It On" (2000) di Peyton Reed

In sintesi: non un capolvaoro ma simpatico, "Bring It On" sembra più un prodotto di pieno anni '90 che di inzio duemila.
Un po' perché sia Kirsten Dunst che, in particolare, Eliza Dushku erano al picco della loro carriera (o, per Dunst, il picco della prima parte, quantomeno), un po' perché l'atmosfera ricorda titoli più o meno simili di quel periodo come "American Pie", "Clueless", "10 Things I Hate About You", "Drop Dead Gorgeous" e per certi versi anche "Miss Congeniality".
Il risultato finale è a tratti abbozzato, sembra quasi che la storia investa un sacco di tempo a creare una certa aspettitiva rispetto ad alcuni avvenimenti specifici, poi quando ci si arriva improvvisamente c'è un cambio di passo e le cose si fanno più frettolose e si rimane con un finale che si realizza davvero nel giro di pochi minuti.
Comunque "Bring It On" ha il suo charme, soprattutto per i nostalgici di quel tipo di cinema americano adolescenziale che oggi sono si produce più.

Vale o non vale: Divertente quanto basta, leggero e consapevolmente "sciocchino", "Bring It On" funziona soprattutto grazie al suo tono spensierato che non si prende mai troppo sul serio e un cast giovanissimo ma palesemente già ricolmo di talenti, Kirsten Dunst in testa (all'epoca delle riprese 17enne) che per buona parte porta da sola la storia sulle spalle.

Film 2185 - Divergent

Intro: Non so bene perché, ma mi era tornata voglia di vederlo.

In sintesi: come sempre, quando qualcosa funziona alla grande, non ci vuole molto perché comincino a comparire dei cloni. Fossimo stati all'inizio degli anni '00 e stessimo parlando di musica, si potrebbe benissimo fare riferimo alla battaglia delle teen popstar, ovvero Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Mandy Moore e Jessica Simpson.
Invece, siccome ci occupiamo di cinema - e il riferimento temporale risale solo a 10 anni fa - ci tocca dire che questo "Divergent" è la copia sbiadita di quell'"Hunger Games" che in sala fece faville (specialmente coi primi due capitoli) e sta per tornare a novembre conl'inevitabile quanto evitabile prequel "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes". I sequel di "Divergent", invece, sono stati un totale disastro, tanto che la produzione del quarto e conclusivo episodio non si è mai verificata.
La verità è che "Divergent" accusa pesantemente i suoi quasi 10 anni di età e non regge il confronto con il ben più interessante "Hunger Games". Non è colpa di Shailene Woodley, che è sempre una grande protagonista, ma sicuramente la storia manca di mordente e la sceneggiatura qui non è esattamente eccelsa. La romance tra Tris e Four non è particolarmente elttrizzante e il risultato finale, per quando passabile, manca di quel qualcosa in più. Forse, non ci fosse stato l'inevitabile paragone con l'altro franchise, questo ne sarebbe uscito vincente. Ma, vista la difficile competizione, "Divergent" finisce per risultare solamente quell'altra saga che hanno provato a lanciare dopo "Hunger Games".

Vale o non vale: Il primo dei soli 3 film usciti di questo franchise è sicuramente il migliore. Col tempo si perde il senso della storia e ci si inabissa in un'intollerabile vortice di banalità pseudo politiche e prodozze tecnologiche (leggi effetti speciali) che non impressionano nessuno. Detto ciò, "Divergent" parte da un'idea anche intrigante, ma non riesce a capitalizzare sul suo potenziale in termini di cast e storia. Fosse finito qui il racconto, sarebbe andato bene lo stesso.

Film e tv, uomini e donne tutti mixati e frullati assieme e via: questi sono i nuovi premi di Mtv dedicati all'intrattenimento video (non musicale)! Un po' caotici a dire il vero, ma mi pare distintivo che la rete sia stata nuovamente capace di distinguersi per scelte fuori dal coro dopo tanti anni di piatto uniformarsi.
