Film 2430 - Wake Up Dead Man

Intro: I had to start watching this movie three times before I could finish it — not because of a lack of intention, clearly, but because we chose to start watching it while in Dingle, Co. Kerry, during the New Year’s celebrations. And I don’t think it was a smart idea to give it a go after a long day of travelling, a long day of drinking, or in the company of friends (Niamh, Rachel, and Eimear) you’d just gone partying with.
So, when I got back home in the new year, I finally gave it a proper go (while on the new treadmill I bought so I don’t have to go for my weekly run in the rain).

Thoughts: I'm still a big fan of the first "Knives Out" and, as fun as it is to have more than one movie in this series, neither of the sequels has lived up to the initial hype — this one especially. Or, to put it differently, after the second movie came out and revealed itself to be a bit of a 'meh', I think people weren’t too curious about the third outing of the franchise.
To be fair, "Wake Up Dead Man" is better than "Glass Onion", in my opinion. The killer is still quite obvious, but at least it isn’t revealed as blatantly by the plot as it is in the second film. I hoped the big reveal of who committed the murder would at least be the kind of plot twist these types of movies should deliver and, in the end, it was — so kudos for that.
Still, I have to admit that a) stories revolving around religion, cults, and/or faith don’t necessarily appeal to me, and b) I wish Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) had been more at the centre of the story, rather than feeling like a supporting character simply linking the Knives Out series together.
Overall, although quite intricate, the story is entertaining, the mystery is an actual mystery, and the cast is full of A-listers delivering solid performances. Josh O’Connor proves once again that he’s a great lead, although it feels strange seeing him play a priest opposite the original hot priest from "Fleabag" (Andrew Scott).

Worth a watch?: If you enjoyed the previous two movies in this franchise, this will be a nice addition and definitely one to watch. Overall, it’s better than the previous one, but not as surprising or entertaining as the original "Knives Out". Still, good fun.

Film 2299 - Twisters

Intro: Venerdì sera siamo andati al cinema a recuperare quello che parrebbe proporsi come il blockbuster di questa estate. Ma sarà poi così?

In sintesi: sicuramente non un brutto film, anzi, propone abbondante intrattenimento (tra l'altro un po' "old school") ed effetti speciali a valanga, per quello che è certamente uno dei titoli estivi più riusciti che ho visto finora. Poi, che non sia un capolavoro cinematografico assoluto non serve neanche dirlo, ma tutto sommato "Twisters" fa ampiamente il suo dovere e ricorda con picaevole nostalgia il suo predecessore "Twister", uscito nelle sale quasi 30 anni fa.
Detto questo, però, una mia nota personale: la sceneggiatura continua senza sosta, inesorabilmente e in maniera martellante a nominare i personaggi nei dialoghi. Ora, fatto qua e là sarebbe difficile notare, ma quando è costante e imperterrito, non si può fare a meno di farci caso. Anzi, la verità è che, più che farci caso, la cosa dopo un po' dà fastidio. A un certo punto questo "fenomeno" è così evidente che l'ho fatto notare a Niamh e ci siamo messi a contare quante volte il nome della protagonista Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones) veniva nominato in una scena: il suo responso è stato che, mentre si guarda "Twisters", si potrebbe tranquillamente fare un gioco alcolico in cui bevi ogni volta che il nome di Kate viene nominato.
Ora, scherzi a parte, mi ha particolarmente colpito questa cosa perché non mi capacito di come nessuno della produzione se ne sia reso conto? Per non parlare del fatto che questa sceneggiatura è firmata da Mark L. Smith - lo stesso che ha scritto "The Revenant" con Alejandro G. Iñárritu - e basata su una storia di Joseph Kosinski che nel 2022 ha diretto nientemeno che "Top Gun: Maverick".
In ogni caso, a parte questa anomalia, "Twisters" fa sicuramente il suo dovere e consegna al pubblico un'avventura estiva che funziona abbastanza bene (anche se quando i due protagonisti dicono di voler aiutare le persone colpite dai tornado, poi quando arrivano sul luogo dell'accaduto non fanno altro che camminare guardandosi intorno che espressione disperata...), anche grazie alla buona chimica tra i due protagonisti e il buon carisma di Glen Powell, la cui ascesa a moderna star di Hollywood sembra sempre più evidente.
Insomma, sicuramente non il blockbuster estivo che mi aspettavo, ma finalmente un prodotto facile facile che mantiene quello che promette.

Vale o non vale: Non serve aver visto l'originale del '96 per poter seguire la trama, i due film sono indipendenti e solo vagamente collegati tra l'altro (solo dalla scena di apertura). Un motivo in più per andare a recuperare "Twisters" senza pensieri e lasciarsi guidare (a cervello spento) alla rincorsa da un tornado all'altro. Del resto, caso vuole che capitino tutti in Oklahoma...
