Intro: Consigliato dalla mia amica Gloria come il film della stagione passata che più l'aveva sorpresa, appena ho potuto l'ho recuperato.

In sintesi: decisamente non il film di natale che mi aspettavo - o, comunque, sicuramente non la tipica pellicola natalizia che inizia a circolare intorno ai mesi di novembre e dicembre - "The Holdovers" è un buon titolo dall'atmosfera rétro che tratta il tema natalizio in realtà solo marginalmente, per concentrarsi con interesse sullo studio di un gruppo di personaggi che rimane a vivere presso il campus di una scuola durante le due settimane di vacanze natalizie: un burbero professore di storia, uno dei suoi studenti e la cuoca.
Il film parte piano e inizialmente sembrerebbe volersi più che altro concentrare sulle bravate dello studente e un gruppo di altri ragazzi che parrebbe doversi trattenere per le feste. Quando, però, anche gli altri studenti se ne vanno, la storia prende una piega diversa, il tono si fa più intimo e la storia comincia ad andare più in profondità con l racconto delle varie vicende che riguardano i tre protagonisti. Ognuno di loro ha dei demoni da affrontare e, nella strana combinazione delle cose della vita, si aiuteranno e sosterranno a vicenda in una serie di occasioni che, fosse mancato il pretesto del rimanere bloccati presso il campus scolastico, non si sarebbero mai verificate.
Alexander Payne confeziona una pellicola delicatamente vintage che non rifugge questioni impegnative e umanamente complesse, senza mai però risultare pesante. Questo è l'aspetto che ho apprezzato di più di "The Holdovers". Poi non nego certo che non sia il mio titolo a tema natalizio preferito, ma rimane un film che ho visto volentieri e mi ha lasciato una bella sensazione addosso (specialmente dopo l'inaspettato finale).

Vale o non vale: Non fatevi trarre in inganno, non è il film di natale "classico": è una pellicola che racconta una storia che si svolge durante il periodo natalizio. Chiarito ciò, "The Holdovers" è un buon prodotto (che per certi versi mi ha ricordato "With Honors" ma con un tono più adulto) che funziona grazie a una storia che si rivela solo pian piano e tre protagonisti sulla carta improbabili, ma sullo schermo affiatatissimi (anche se mi chiedo quanto "da Oscar" sia la performance di Da'Vine Joy Randolph che già danno come favorita come Miglior attrice non protagonista).
Premi: Vincitore di 2 Golden Globe per il Miglior attore protagonista, commedia o musical (Giamatti) e la Miglior attrice non protagonista (Randolph) e candidato per il Miglior film, commedia o musical.
