Film 2223 - Killers of the Flower Moon

Intro: Torniamo nuovamente indietro all'elenco di titoli che avevo lasciato indietro l'anno scorso.

In sintesi: la prima parte di film - o forse, per meglio dire, i primi due terzi - mi è molto piaciuta, ero decisamente molto interessato e coinvolto dalla storia e i suoi personaggi. Poi, però, ho perso interesse.
A dire il vero perdere interesse non descrive nemmeno lontanamente come mi sia sentito. Il racconto volge a una conclusione naturale: i "cattivi" sono identificati, chi si deve rimettere si rimette e la storia sembrerebbe essere giunta alla fine, conclusa. E invece no, si continua, e non per poco tra l'altro. Già, perché "Killers of the Flower Moon" dura nientepopodimeno che 206 minuti, ovvero 3 ore e 20 minuti, di cui l'ultima ora, ora e venti (il che fa ridere solo a pensarci, considerato che un prodotto cinematografico generalmente dura un'ora e trenta) per me è stata un vero tormento. Ho già espresso in passato la mia attuale difficoltà a seguire pellicole dalla durata epica e, forse, il problema è nato proprio qui.
Capisco perfettamente come sia nato questo progetto: è quasi un "vanity project" di Scorsese, prodotto da Apple (sganciando $200–215 milioni solo per produrlo) che sicuro non ha problemi di soldi (quindi ha meno interesse a trovare un riscontro positivo al box-office), quanto più un interesse a stabilirsi come casa di produzione di prodotti di qualità: in questo senso, penso sia stata lasciata carta bianca al leggendario regista (che qualunque cosa realizza ha garanzia di essere quantomeno candidata all'Oscar). Il contrappasso di questa decisione è, però, un prodotto difficilissimo da piazzare commercialmente, in quanto una durata così lunga limita il numero di proiezioni giornaliere del film, per non parlare del fatto che una buona fetta di audience si è sicuramente lasciata spaventare dall'eccessiva lunghezza oltre che, va detto, da una trama dai temi alquanto pesanti.
Questo discorso per dire che, lo ammetto, anche io sono caduto un po' in questo "mood" generale. "Killers of the Flower Moon" è girato meravigliosamente, la fotografia è impeccabile e la regitazione, neanche a dirlo, è superba come ci si aspettava, eppure questo non basta a salvarlo del tutto o, quantomeno, a riscattarne il finale. Perché la storia finisce a un certo punto, ma il film decide di andare avanti e, francamente, continuo ancora a non comprenderne il motivo. So che si tratta di un prodotto tratto dal romanzo di David Grann, dunque mi aspetto che la trama si adegui alla conclusione del libro, ma non posso fare a meno di chiedermi se certe parti non potessero davvero essere tagliate o accorciate.
Certamente questo non ha aiutato troppo la mia visione, anche se conservo un ricordo positivo del film tutto sommato, specialmente grazie alle magnifiche performance del trio Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone e Robert De Niro (che però fa sempre un po' la stessa parte).
Continuo a pensare che se Lily Gladstone fosse stata candidata come non protagonista agli Oscar avrebbe avuto più possibilità di vincere, soprattutto perché Emma Stone in "Poor Things" di fatto è il film, mentre qui Gladstone manca per parte della storia e anche se sì, di fatto lei è la protagonista femminile del film, non so quanto si possa dire che sia la protagonista in generale (protagonista che, invece, è DiCaprio). Peccato, perché Gladstone è sicuramente la rivelazione di questo "Killers of the Flower Moon" e forse il suo elemento più innegabilmente riuscito e, per questa performance, un Oscar se lo sarebbe davvero meritato.

Vale o non vale: Prodotto tecnicamente inattacabile, recitato benissimo e dalla storia potente e rilevante più che mai, "Killers of the Flower Moon" non è però un film per tutti anche a causa della sua durata eccessiva. I fan di Scorsese dovrebbero apprezzare.
Premi: Candidato a 10 premi Oscar per Miglior film, regia, attrice protagonista (Gladstone), attore non protagonista (De Niro), fotografia, montaggio, costumi, scenografia, colonna sonora e canzone originale ("Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)" di Scott George). 9 nomination ai BAFTA (film, regia, attore non protagonista, casting, fotografia, costumi, montaggio, trucco e acconciature, colonna sonora e scenografia) e una vittoria ai Golden Globe per Lily Gladstone come Miglior attrice protagonista su 6 nomination nella categoria drama (film, regia, attore protagonista per DiCaprio, attore non protagonista, sceneggiatura e colonna sonora). Nomination come Miglior film straniero ai David di Donatello 2024.
