Film 2492 - Meg 2: The Trench

Intro: Once I heard it was bad, I never convinced myself to go and see it at the movies. Then, a few weeks ago, I saw it listed on Netflix and I said to myself: "Why not?"

Thoughts: I mean, if you've seen the previous one, you know exactly what to expect from this sequel. And look, I'm not saying it's good by any means, but if you enjoyed "The Meg", you should have a good time this time around as well. And I did.
I think they tried to go even bigger with this one, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but the story ends up having way too many plots and subplots, and way too many main and side characters for the audience to be fully invested. To be fair, if you're watching "Meg 2: The Trench", you're doing it for the spectacle it provides and definitely not for the plot, but still, it's worth mentioning the overstuffed script.
And, as is to be expected, Jason Statham goes above and beyond to prove how badass he can be.
Not much else to say, really; either you have a good time or you think this is the stupidest movie in the world.

(from IMDb). If this sounds like your jam, damn, you're gonna have a good time. Otherwise, venture elsewhere.
Awards: 3 nominations at the Razzie Awards for Worst Picture, Worst Director and Worst Actor (Jason Statham).

Film 1700 - The Meg

Intro: Primo film sul primo aereo che mi riporta in Europa. Dopo essermi preparato la lista mentale di titoli che ho intenzione di vedere, decido di cominciare da una pellicola facile facile - del resto sto aspettando che mi portino da mangiare - che non ero riuscito a vedere al cinema.

In sintesi: nessuno più di me ama un disaster movie sugli squali che fanno razzia, però diciamocelo, questo "The Meg" è solo una gran boiata.
Non è sufficientemente serio per essere interessante, né così tanto cagata da risultare divertente, per cui rimane incastrato in un limbo indefinito di cui fanno parte quei titoli che si lasciano guardare, ma non rimangono impressi per nessun motivo. Perché sì, il megalodonte è enorme e fa (teoricamente) paura, ma è tanto palesemente finto che manca la possibilità dello spavento che generava "Lo squalo"; senza contare che, diversamente da quest'ultimo, la possibilità che uno squalo preistorico grande come la Sicilia sia una minaccia plausibile anche fuori dalla sala cinematografica è pari a 0, motivo per cui si perde tutto quel gioco di ansie e paure irrazionali che hanno reso il classico di Spielberg tanto riuscito quanto inquietante. Aggiungo: ma a un megalodonte che gli fregherebbe di mangiarsi una persona? Per fare un parallelismo, a prescindere dal sapore, voi che soddisfazione ne trarreste dal mangiare un moscerino? Appunto.

Vale o non vale: Blockbuster pompatissimo che riempie di steroidi qualsiasi suo elemento per elevarlo all'ennesima potenza, riuscendo però solo a sgonfiare il risultato finale. Credo che gli spettatori non abbiano bisogno di niente di più grande, più clamoroso o più incredibile, ma di storie - a prescindere dal genere - che centrino il loro obiettivo. In questo senso "The Meg" si dimentica che alla base di un film che coinvolge uno squalo assassino ci sono la paura irrazionale e l'istinto di sopravvivenza, non esplosioni subacquee e dimensioni da Guinness dei primati. Il budget sarà anche monster ($130 milioni), ma la storia di per sé si dimentica le cose che dovrebbero contare per un prodotto come questo. Insomma, guardabile ma si poteva fare decisamente meglio.
Premi: Candidato al Razzie per il Peggior prequel, remake, rip-off o sequel.
