Film 2428 - Avatar: Fire and Ash

Intro: It's always hard to shop for my dad, so for Christmas I got it a series of different presents that included an afternoon to the movies with me. For old time sake. Also, unexpectetly, we watched it in 3D: I didn't know that was still a thing, to be honest.

Thoughts: I don't consider myself a massive fan of this franchise, but I was definitely obsessed with the first movie when it came out. The novelty of that first adventure — the colours, the visuals, the music — everything was so magically entertaining and, in a way, I was mesmerised by it. Now, with this third film, the magic has definitely worn off a bit.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely enjoyed "Avatar: Fire and Ash", and I'm glad that I went to see it with my dad — with whom I watched "Avatar" the very first time I saw it at the movies. I also have to admit that I found it to be better than I expected. Still, I can't shake the feeling that there's way, way less interest around this new outing than around the two previous ones. I mean, the box-office performance is still brilliant (will it get to two billion dollars, though? I don't think so), and people are clearly going to the theatre to watch it, but the excitement that was once there seems noticeably less intense. Although this is understandable — it's been 14 years since the first "Avatar" came out — it's also impossible not to notice.
I agree with the critics: the "Avatar" saga seems to be recycling the same story over and over again, while mainly relying on spectacle and visually striking elements. Nonetheless, "Avatar 3" is a fun ride for what it is — never boring — and this time it also introduces a great new villain in Varang (Oona Chaplin). I found her to be the standout of the whole experience.
So, while "Avatar: Fire and Ash" probably won’t be redefining the rules of cinema and storytelling any time soon, I still think it’s a respectable third entry in one of the last remaining successful movie franchises we have today.

Worth a watch?: I really enjoyed it for what it is. It's definitely not for everyone - especially if you din't like the first two films - and it runs for 3 hours and 17 minutes so, if you think you're up for that, go ahead and have fun!
Awards: Nominated to 2 Golden Globes for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Original Song ("Dream as One" by Miley Cyrus).

In sintesi: 192 minuti di film per questo ritorno a Pandora che, diciamocelo tranquillamente, funziona tanto bene quanto il primo. Intelligente l'idea di cambiare location e spostare la storia nel reame acquatico, trovata che mantiene lo spettatore sufficientemente interessato, oltre che visivamente stimolato, il tutto per un risultato finale lunghissimo, ma che in ogni caso funziona.
Poi, certo, durante la visione non ho potuto fare a meno di chiedermi: c'era davvero bisogno di richiamare ogni membro del cast del primo film (specialmente gli interpreti di personaggi il cui arco narrativo si era esaurito nella storia precedente)? Non era possibile immaginarsi un secondo capitolo che non fosse l'esatta copia del precedente? E perché le balene di questo film parlano, mentre gli altri animali no? Inoltre, c'era davvero bisogno di usare mezzora di racconto per mostrare la caccia alle balene? E perché Cameron non può fare a meno di piazzare una nave che affonda all'interno delle sue storie? O, ancora, il personaggio di Spider (Jack Champion) poteva essere scritto in maniera meno contraddittoria?
Queste solo alcune delle domande che non si può fare a meno di porsi e anche se certe risposte sono ovvie, ribadisco che, di fatto, "Avatar: The Way of Water" sia il blockbuster della stagione natalizia di cui - per tante e diverse ragioni - ci fosse bisogno. Inattacabile a livello di concept visivo ed effetti speciali, sicuro nella regia, sufficientemente comprensibile a livello narrativo e di tematiche della storia (la famiglia, la famiglia, la famiglia!), questo secondo "Avatar" non delude le aspettative e consegna ai fan della pellicola del 2009 esattamente quello che ci si aspettava: un intrattenimento su larga scala tra colorate meraviglie e potenti scene d'azione. Per chi apprezza, il perfetto regalo di Natale.

Vale o non vale: "Avatar 2" si scosta di poco in termini narrativi e visivi dal suo predecessore, ma quanto basta (e a distanza di tempo sufficiente) da riuscire a replicare l'istantaneo successo del primo film. Chiaro, le 3 ore e passa di durata possono essere un deterrente per molti, ma tutto sommato il ritmo della narrazione è quasi sempre quello giusto (la caccia alle balene... insomma) e il risultato finale è comunque quella giostra colorata perfetta da abbinare allo spirito natalizio. Tra due anni, confermato il terzo episodio.
Premi: Candidato a 2 Golden Globes 2023 per Miglior film drammatico e Miglior regia.
