Film 2465 - Lee Cronin's The Mummy

Intro: God love a movie about ancient Egypt, pyramids, mummies and old curses. So when I heard about this film - from an Irish director, nonetheless! - I couldn't wait to go to the movies to see it!

Thoughts: Ok, let's be honest here: I didn't have big expectations for this one. I mean, I do have a fascination with ancient Egypt, I always have, so stories like this one are always a go for me. That said, I have to admit that, given the production budget ($22 million), the lack of star power (Jack Reynor is really the only recognizable face for English-speaking audiences) and the very demure marketing approach, I was expecting "Lee Cronin's The Mummy" to be an absolute abomination of a movie. And don't get me wrong, it isn't great, but it's also better than I expected, which genuinely surprised me.
First of all, the scope of the story is surprisingly big: we start in Egypt - first Aswan, then Cairo - before moving to Albuquerque, New Mexico. We move around, we chase some people, we relocate... and none of the locations ever feel cheap. It's not just an ugly green screen and a fake background. So I was quite impressed. Additionally, the visual effects aren't too bad and really help convey the story and its visual elements, especially when it comes to the little girl turning into the mummy (no spoilers here, it's literally on the movie's poster). I mean, you can tell they had to keep an eye on the budget, because some elements of the story are simply told to the audience rather than shown, but I understand the limitations and respect the effort. With what they had, they did a great job.
But I was mostly impressed with Lee Cronin. I have no idea who this man is, but he managed to:

• Put his name on the poster before the title of the movie in true horror style - I mean, I'm sure it was mainly because of trademark reasons, but hey, it is what it is.
• Secure funding for this crazy story about a cursed girl who turns into a mummy, possesses her siblings and, together, they desecrate their grandmother's corpse. Not the easiest pitch to sell to a studio.
• Produce this movie on a decent budget, put it out there and even open to $13.5 million and #3 at the American box office!

I mean, good for him! He had a vision and stood by it, and I respect that. Again, the movie isn't a masterpiece, but after considering all of the above, I have to admit that the whole operation behind "Lee Cronin's The Mummy" leaves a different impression. More than that, I'm glad that so many original stories are making their way to the big screen lately, and this is just another example of a (moderately) successful original IP that serves its purpose: telling a new story, entertaining its audience and providing a good time. And a good time I had.

Worth a watch?: I've seen better movies, but I've also definitely seen worse. The story works well enough up until the end, when the whole ritual just sort of happens and you're not quite sure how or why. But I mean, do we really need to know? No. You can perfectly enjoy the crazy ride that is "Lee Cronin's The Mummy" and move on with your life without any problem.

In sintesi: mi ero anche dimenticato di averlo visto.
Sicuramente il film più brutto che abbia visto fino ad ora quest'anno, molto probabilmente una delle pellicole più brutte e stupide di sempre.
Effetti speciali tremendi, produzione traballante e dal budget evidentemente limitato, protagonisti incapaci di recitare, il tutto per una storia che non ha il minimo senso (specialmente quando spiega chi sia il "cattivo" di turno, in questo caso l'amico immaginario e il perché sia così pericoloso... mamma mia che cagata!) e si gioca l'unico colpo di scena in maniera talmente idiotica da risultare comica.
Insomma, un disastro su tutta la linea.

Film 2040 - Jungle Cruise

Intro: Visto letteralmente due sere fa. Non mi capitava da un bel po' di essere cosi puntuale con una recensione... Lo avevo detto che ero in pari!

In sintesi: nessuno si aspettava un capolavoro da questo "Jungle Cruise", ciò non toglie che si potesse fare di più, soprattutto considerato che a disposizione si avesse il talento di Emily Blunt (che a quanto pare sta facendo scintille in casa Disney ultimamente).
La verità è che questa pellicola ne ricorda tante altre e allo stesso tempo fallisce nel tentativo di rendersi riconoscibile per stile, ritmo o racconto, il tutto per un risultato finale che è piattamente godibile sì, ma strizza troppo l'occhio ad altre avventure come quelle di (uno qualunque dei 3) "Jumanji", (uno qualsiasi degli innumerevoli) "Pirates of the Caribbean", (uno qualsiasi dei vari) "The Mummy", (uno dei 2) "National Treasure" e via dicendo.
Insomma, considerando che la sceneggiatura di "Jungle Cruise" non presenta certo niente di innovativo o mai visto prima sul grande schermo, ci si sarebbe dovuti concentrare più sul conferire tridimensionalità ai personaggi principali - non basta al giorno d'oggi che la tua eroina sia una donna indipendente, risoluta e nata in un momento storico che non le rende giustizia - e dare un tono comico a tutto il racconto, perché altrimenti il tuo film risulterà semplicemente l'ennesimo titolo usa e getta con protagonista Dwayne Johnson che racconta di una maledizione ed è ispirato ad una delle giostre dei parchi a tema della Disney (sì, ci risiamo...).
Ribadisco che nessuno si aspettasse la pellicola del secolo, però mi sento di dire che nonostante le basse richieste del consumatore - domenica avevo solo voglia di vedere un prodotto facile facile che mi facesse spegnere il cervello - il risultato finale sia decisamente inferiore al potenziale di un titolo dal budget mostruoso di 200 milioni di dollari: gli effetti speciali sono mediocri, gli zigomi della Blunt mai così ferilliani, siamo nuovamente alle prese con una storia incentrata su una maledizione e dei conquistadores, per l'ennesima volta siamo di fronte ad un albero magico della vita ("Avatar" certamente, ma anche "Pocahontas") e, insomma, Dwayne Johnson avrà anche il suo fascino (suppongo), ma non si tratta certo del miglior attore della storia del cinema.
Quindi, ecco, diciamo che con tutta la buona volontà del mondo, "Jungle Cruise" proprio non colpisce, non lascia il segno. E sono felice che la Disney si stia finalmente svegliando dal suo torpore cis eterosessuale e cominciando a regalare (qualche) rappresentazione LGBT nei suoi prodotti, però questo piccolo gesto (miscroscopico, a dire il vero) di apertura nei confronti di racconti e storie con un piglio più moderno non è sufficiente a riscattare un giro di giostra cinematografica piuttosto insipido. E sorprendentemente privo di ironia.
Ps. Ma poi cosa ti serve avere Paul Giamatti nel cast se lo usi per due scene a inizio film e una scena nel finale?!

Vale o non vale: I tentativi di epicità falliscono miseramente, l'avventura di per sé non ha niente di mai visto e il fatto che ci si affidi all'ennesima maledizione da annulare direziona tutta l'operazione "Jungle Cruise" verso quel limbo di mediocrità in cui si trovato titoli simili con budget e cast stellare che preferiscono raccontare la solita storia fotocopia che non ha veramente nulla da dire e il cui senso supremo è quello di incassare soldi al botteghino in vista di un sequel (che speriamo non si avveri, ma dubito) che tenterà di bissare il successo. C'è da dire che al momento il successo parrebbe non essere colossale, ma le variabili Covid + Disney+ vanno certamente prese in considerazione.
Insomma, capiamoci, "Jungle Cruise" funziona se siete alla ricerca di un prodotto che non richieda alcuno sforzo mentale e nessuna particolare esigenza di prestare attenzione per tutti i 127 minuti di durata. Per qualsiasi altra esigenza, invece, meglio rivolgersi altrove.
