Film 2433 - Hamnet

Intro: I'm in my movie era once again and lately I've been trying to catch up with all the films that I missed during last year or saved "for later" and never went back to. So here we are, giving this franchise another chance after its disappointing latest entries. But I was looking for somthing fun and easy and I thought this one could be a good candidate.

Thoughts: If "Shakespeare in Love" were a bit more similar to this one, maybe it would have received less backlash when winning all those Oscars...
Controversy aside, "Hamnet" really surprised me. I wasn’t sure I’d have enjoyed it — it’s a period drama about Shakespeare and the making of Hamlet, so not necessarily my go-to story. And yet, I really liked it.
It’s definitely not an easy watch. It’s a sad story about the struggle of a family; it revolves around grief and loss. But it’s so beautifully made — its connection to nature, death, and those powers that go beyond the human experience is ever-present — and the performances are so powerful that it all stays with you even after the movie has ended. It is, indeed, an experience, and I think Chloé Zhao’s sensibility and vision for this story really make it a unique piece of art.
On top of all of this, Jessie Buckley gives the performance of a lifetime. She’s magnetic and charismatic and almost carries the whole movie herself. It’s honestly a revelation. She’s so connected to her emotions, and she’s able to portray them in such a way that is exhilarating to watch and heartbreaking at the same time. If this performance doesn’t win her the Oscar, I don’t know what will. Paul Mescal is also great here, and it’s a bit disappointing to see him left out of the Supporting Actor category, even though he didn’t really have a shot at winning.
Possibly the biggest surprise of "Hamnet" is Jacobi Jupe, a kid actor who can hold his own in a room full of talented grown-ups. His performance is amazing and, although difficult for a younger actor, he should have been more recognized for his portrayal of Hamnet Shakespeare.
Overall, this is one of the best movies nominated at the Oscars that I’ve seen so far. I do think that the first part is a bit slow and can drag at times, yet once the story gets you to the city — once you’re in that theater — you’re hooked. That last scene, when Agnes (Buckley) reaches forward to hold the actor’s hand (Noah Jupe), is so powerful and meaningful that it was impossible for me to hold back my tears. If only for that scene, "Hamnet" is a great movie.

Worth a watch?: Not an easy watch and probably not everyone’s cup of tea. If you like beautifully shot dramas and/or if you’re a fan of the Oscars, this is a must-watch. And Jessie Buckley’s performance is one for the ages.

Film 2259 - Wicked Little Letters

In sintesi: il problema di vedersi per bere qualcosa al volo prima del cinema (dopo una giornata di lavoro) è sempre che, vuoi o non vuoi, finisco per addormentarmi. In questo caso particolare, però, devo dire che ho opposto resistenza con una certa veemenza, considerato quanto mi interessasse il film.
Quindi sì, ammetto di aver perso qualche colpo all'inizio, ma di fatto sono riuscito a seguire tranquillamente tutta la storia che, ammetto, ho trovato abbastanza divertente. Va detto che il trailer sia un più "animato" del film nella sua interezza, però il risultato finale funziona quanto basta a lasciare soddisfatti.
L'unica vera ragione di vago disappunto sta nella gestione della questione centrale di tutta la storia: chi scrive le lettere? Sarebbe carino scoprirlo nel finale, con un colpo di scena che premi lo spettatore dopo un'oretta e mezza di tentativi per indovinare che ci sia dietro tante parole infuocate.
Nella realtà, invece, la trama sceglie stranamente di rivelare chi sia lo Shakespeare della parolaccia già a metà del racconto, di fatto dandosi un po' la zappa sui piedi: non c'è il piacere di scoprire alla fine chi sia il colpevole, mancando quindi quell'effetto a sorpresa che avrebbe aiutato a trascinare meglio tutto il racconto fino in fondo. Diciamo che si rimane con un vago senso di insoddisfazione.
A parte ciò, grandissime performance da tutto il cast, magica chimica tra Jessie Buckley e Olivia Colman e menzione speciale per Timothy Spall che è sempre una garanzia ed è un piacere ritrovare per una volta in un ruolo più prominente.

Sicuramente non per tutti i palati, considerando il numero di parolacce incluse (che poi francamente io non le ho capite tutte - però quello è più un fattore di svantaggio linguistico che altro - quindi per me il linguaggio è stato provocatorio fino a un certo punto).

In sintesi: una delle pellicole più assurde che abbia mai visto, sicuramente la più strana che abbia guardato nell'ultimo periodo, "I'm Thinking of Ending Things" è stato una montagna russa emotiva che mi ha sfibrato nel profondo. Perché lo dico fin dall'inizio: nonostante tutte le mie buone intenzioni, questo film mi ha disintegrato l'anima. E non in senso positivo (sempre che ce ne sia uno).
Premesso che se non fosse stato per il fatto che Ferdia ci avrebbe fatto domande sulla pellicola il giorno dopo non avrei sicuramente terminato di vederlo, ammetto forse per la prima volta nella mia vita di aver mandato avanti la visione per poter mettere fine al mio tormento.
Ora io sono totalmente a favore degli esperimenti cinemtografici, del nonsense più random, del mettere alla prova lo spettatore attraverso meccanismi narrativi differenti e chi più ne ha più ne metta. Il punto è che qui non riuscivo onestamente a comprendere cosa stesse succedendo.
Mentre nella prima parte della storia ero interessato a capire dove il racconto volesse andare a parare, dal momento in cui ho realizzato che tutta la serie di stranezze, stramberie e dettagli non coesi non sarebbero stati spiegati alla fine del racconto ho perso totalmente interesse.
Perché, onestamente, dovrei seguire il racconto di qualcosa che non capisco quando so che nessuno farà lo sforzo di spiegarmi a cosa sto assistendo? Non dico che non ci fosse una visione precisa dietro le scelte narrative fatte qui - probabilmente, anzi, c'è una consapevolezza che non sono riuscito a cogliere - ma la sensazione che ho avuto è che si volesse mettere in scena qualcosa di non convenzionale per il gusto di farlo e non tanto per stuzzicare la curiosità dello spettatore.
Aggiungo che, personalmente, nel momento in cui per capire cosa diavolo sia successo nella tua storia mi debba andare a leggere il riassunto su Wikipedia, per me si è un po' perso il senso delle cose.
Poi, ribadisco, daje a tutta birra di non convenzionalità e bizzarrie, però ecco... a tutto c'è un limite. Almeno per i miei gusti.

Vale o non vale: Personalmente l'ho trovato tedioso e assolutamente faticoso da digerire. Il finale è interminabile e il caos narrativo costante, destabilizzante e sfibrante. Sono sicuro che parte (se non tutte) queste emozioni facessero parte delle reazioni che il team dietro a questo film volesse sucitare nello spettatore - onore al merito per la cura dei dettagli in un mondo che smettere di avere senso ed eppure presenta una coesione interna molto precisa - ma per quanto mi riguarda qui mancava l'elemento principale a dare senso all'esperienza cinematografica: il mio interesse nei confronti della storia.

Film 1855 - Judy

Intro: Ero elettrizzato all'idea di vedere finalmente questa pellicola, apparentemente il ritorno in grande stile di una delle attrici che seguo sempre con grande interesse, Renée Zellweger.

In sintesi: non so dire esattamente cosa mi affascini di Renée Zellweger, ma tutte le volte che esce un suo film ho voglia di vederlo. La realtà è che molti dei prodotti in cui la si trova sono delle gigantesche boiate (vedi "New in Town", "Case 39", "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason"), però per anni ha riscontrato un enorme successo di pubblico e critica - ah, quell'Oscar per "Cold Mountain"... - e con questa pellicola è di fatto tornata in auge dopo un decennio decisamente appannato nel quale si è inserito anche un lungo periodo di assenza dalle scene.
E' con grande interesse, quindi, che mi sono avvicinato a questo "Judy", non solo perché della Garland so effettivamente poco, ma anche perché sembrava rappresentare una rinascita qualitativa della sua protagonista e, in effetti, devo dire che le aspettative non sono state disattese. Per carità, non siamo di fronte ad un prodotto perfetto, ma fortunatamente tutti gli elementi presentati si mescolano bene insieme, per un risultato finale che lascia soddisfatti.
Credo ci sia una certa fragilità della Zellweger che si sposa bene con il personaggio che qui interpreta, una necessità di piacere ed averne la conferma che mi pare di aver riscontrato in non poche sue interviste, senza contare che, come Judy, anche Renée ritrova la popolarità dopo un periodo di oblio.
Insomma, checché ne dicano le malelingue - che volevano la scelta dell'Academy di conferire a questo film il premio per la Migliore attrice una scelta troppo facile, quasi banale - trovo che questo sia un prodotto soddisfacente e a tratti interessante, per quanto siano evidenti certi limiti della sceneggiatura rispetto all'approfondimento dei personaggi secondari, troppo spesso bidimensionali. Riscattano tutta l'operazione la grande performance della Zellweger, l'intramontabile fascino dietro al personaggio della Garland e una pazzesca colonna sonora composta da grandi classici (per il film tutti interpretati dal vivo).
Ps. Curiosità: Renée Zellweger è solo la quarta attrice su 92 edizioni degli Oscar ad aver vinto il premio come Miglior attrice protagonista dopo aver già vinto quello come non protagonista. Prima di lei solo Meryl Streep, Jessica Lange e Cate Blanchett.
In generale, comunque, sono 7 le attrici che hanno vinto in entrambe le categorie: Ingrid Bergman, Maggie Smith, Helen Hayes, Streep, Lange, Blanchett e Zellweger.

Vale o non vale: Per i fan delle due dive che questo film porta alla ribalta, sicuramente una ghiotta occasione. In generale non è un film per tutti, ci sono molti momenti musicali, si tratta di un biopic, si affrontano burrascosi momenti personali attraverso gli occhi di una bambina prima e un'adulta poi che dalla vita non ha avuto tutto quel glamour e quella felicità che la facciata pubblica voleva far pensare. Per me un film non perfetto, ma di valore (anche per quella strizzatina d'occhio al LGBTQI+ factor che non guasta mai).
Premi: Candidato all'Oscar per il Miglior trucco e vincitore di quello per la Migliore attrice protagonista. Renée Zellweger per questo ruolo ha vinto anche il Golden Globe e il BAFTA. Ai British Academy Film Awards il film era candidato anche per i costumi e il trucco.
