In sintesi: bellissimo, difficilissimo, pesantissimo film, "Manchester by the Sea" era esattamente quel tipo di prodotto a cui mi avvicinavo con diffidenza, per poi posticipare la visione di continuo. E' inutile girarci intorno, qui la visione richiede un investimento emozionale non da poco, per cui meglio essere preparati fin dall'inizio. Per coloro i quali il gioco vale la candela, la pellicola di Lonergan sarà una vera e propria sorpresa sia a livello narrativo che di emozioni. Non mancano, infatti, i motivi per piangere e disperarsi, ma allo stesso tempo la storia fornirà prova del fatto che sia possibile risorgere da qualsiasi sciagura nel momento in cui si riesce a trovare la propria pace. E il modo in cui questa storia è raccontata è semplice e diretto, il che rende il risultato finale ancora più vero ed intenso. Grandissimo cast con Affleck e Williams (per quanto presente pochissimo) perfetti per il ruolo.

Vale o non vale: Emotivamente impegnativo e al contempo gratificante, "Manchester by the Sea" richiede allo spettatore di investire nella propria storia e dramma riuscendo, però, a restituire il racconto profondamente umano di una disgrazia che cambierà le vite di tutti i coinvolti. Davvero bello.
Premi: Candidato a 6 Oscar tra cui Miglior film e regia, ha vinto per Miglior attore protagonista (Affleck) e sceneggiatura originale. Nominato a 5 Golden Globes ha vinto quello per Miglior attore drammatico; ai BAFTA 2017 su 6 nomination ha vinto per Miglior attore e sceneggiatura originale. Candidato ai David di Donatello come Miglior film straniero.

Intro: Una pellicola che non vedevo l'ora di recuperare, speranzoso che le premesse (e promesse) sarebbero riuscite ad eguagliare le mie altissime aspettative.

In sintesi: per quanto mi riguarda, il miglior film della stagione 2017. Brillante, geniale, toccante, recitato divinamente. Semplicemente un capolavoro; Frances McDormand è meravigliosa, sensazionale. Non fosse che il film è stupendo di per sé, basterebbe lei per rendere questo titolo assolutamente da guardare. E riguardare. Perché quando una sa fare bene il suo mestiere, si vede; grandissimo cast di comprimari. Il film vive sulle spalle di un fortissimo personaggio, Mildred (McDormand), e al contempo su quelle di chi le gravita attorno. Meritatissimo l'Oscar a Rockwell, che riesce finalmente ad ottenere la visibilità che gli spetta. E quest'anno ha fatto il bis...; ho trovato la trama non solo avvincente, ma tagliente, intelligente e ben scritta. Ci sono tutti gli ingredienti che rendono un'opera cinematografica perfetta e il risultato è magnifico. A differenza di una stagione cinematografica 2018 dove la vera qualità è stata assente, l'anno precedente è stato davvero un momento d'oro per quanto riguarda l'industria hollywoodiana. Immagino non si possa vincere tutti gli altri, per cui meglio godersi la magia, quando si verifica.

Vale o non vale: Grande capolavoro di umanità e intelligenza, un film al contempo sensibile e graffiante, sfrontato e politicamente scorrettissimo. "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" è stato il mio film del 2017, da vedere e rivedere.
Premi: Candidato a 7 premi Oscar, tra cui Miglior film, ne ha vinti 2: Miglior attrice protagonista (McDormand) e Miglior attore non protagonista (Rockwell); 4 Golden Globes vinti (tra cui Miglior film drammatico) e 5 BAFTA vinti (tra cui Miglior film e Miglior film britannico).

Film 1517 - Lady Bird

Intro: I was so into this movie without even had a clue about it, but I loved the fact that this is an all-women project and the movie got ravishing reviews. Not to mention all the nominations that it got from the latest award season...

Briefly: I really have to say that I wasn't impressed by "Lady Bird". Greta Gerwig directorial debut can be fun sometimes and it is surely solid when it comes to the plot, but in the end I didn't enjoy it that much. Probably my expectations were too high for a movie that got so far with reviews and awards. And most of the time it's hard to match what you would like to see with what you're actually seeing;
I am definitely in love with Saoirse Ronan, she really can act! I think she deserves her Golden Globe as Best Actress even though an Oscar win would have been difficult to imagine, mostly because of the other performances nominated this year. Anyway I prefer her in "Brooklyn", where she is simply divine. A round of applause also to Laurie Metcalf, absolutely perfect in this role;
I find a little bit difficult to see where does Gerwig Best Director nomination comes from. Nolan in "Dunkirk" is amazing and was about time that Guillermo del Toro's talent got recognised, but "Lady Bird" directorial effort is not any different from other coming-of-age comedy-drama movies we see almost everyday;
I think this is a decent film that works mostly because of its great cast and a story that sounds really true even though it's fiction. It's easy to relate with Lady Bird McPherson, a senior student at a Catholic high school in Sacramento, that struggles to find herself in a world that she doesn't see as her own. She needs to find her way through school, parents expectations, friends, dreams and all that stuff teenagers must experience while they try to figure it out what they'd like to be in adult life. Apart from that, "Lady Bird" isn't that amazing, even though it has its moments.

Worth watching?: I was expecting something else or, probably, I was just expecting too much. Anyway I find "Lady Bird" a very normal film that deserve a chance, even though it's not that great as the critics want you to believe.
Awards: Nominated for 5 Oscars (Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Achievement in Directing, Best Original Screenplay), 4 Golden Globes (winning Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy and Best Actress) and 3 BAFTAs (Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress, Best Leading Actress).
