In sintesi: sempre divertente, è stato un piacere rivederlo.
Le scene d'azione sono ancora pazzesche (iconiche perfino in certe parti), la colonna sonora è una bomba ("Independent Women Part I" delle Destiny's Child chiude il film) e trovo sempre che la combo Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore e Lucy Liu sia perfetta, un trio di personalità che si bilanciano e complimentano magnificamente a vicenda.
Per me una pellicola che non delude mai.

Vale o non vale: Veloce e frenetico, dal ritmo e montaggio azzeccati, "Charlie's Angels" di McG è un concentrato di energia a ritmo di una colonna sonora perfetta e un trio di coprotagoniste azzeccato e vincente. Una rivisitazione piuttosto estrema rispetto alla serie tv da cui è tratto, però a mio avviso il film funziona e racchiude perfettamente l'essenza dei primi anni 2000.
Premi: Candidato al Grammy per Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media ("Independent Women Part I" delle Destiny's Child). 6 nomination agli MTV Movie + TV Awards e 2 vittorie per Best Dance Sequence e Best On-Screen Team (Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore e Lucy Liu).

Intro: Non ero riuscito a recuperarlo al cinema, così non appena sono riuscito a trovarlo in streaming ho deciso subito di guardarlo.

In sintesi: non che il film sia tremendo, però non è nemmeno entusiasmante.
In un susseguirsi intricatissimo di colpi di scena e scene d'azione, il coloratissimo "Argylle" non riesce mai davvero a trovare la sua dimensione perché cerca di essere troppe cose. Un po' commedia, un po' thriller con un tocco di espionage, un po' blockbuster coi supereroi e, qui sta il problema, un po' (troppo simile a) "Kingsman: The Secret Service": c'è troppa carne al fuoco, troppi personaggi, troppe similitudini con altri titoli già visti, penso a "Bullet Train", "Spy", "Kick-Ass", ma anche (sorprendentemente) a quel "Nim's Island" con Jodie Foster. Insomma, un patchwork di elementi che, sfortunatamente, in questo caso non stanno perfettamente insieme.
Bryce Dallas Howard è sempre un'ottima protagonista e, bisogna dirlo, Dua Lipa qui ha un ruolo che definire sexy è dire poco, però non amo particolarmente Henry Cavill al di fuori dell'ambito comics e tutta quella fanfara con i genitori della protagonista non mi ha proprio preso e, insieme alle infinite scene di azione, ho finito per controllare il cellulare molto più spesso di quanto mi sarei aspettato.
Insomma, ho visto di peggio, ma mi aspettavo di più da Matthew Vaughn.

Detto ciò, questa pellicola va bene per un momento in cui si voglia spegnere il cervello o si stia cercando una storia con incredibili scene d'azione e/o un grande cast. Per il resto "Argylle" lascia il tempo che trova.

Intro: Avevo dato a Ciarán la possibilità di scegliere tra 3 possibili pellicole da vedere e, all'ultimo minuto, ha deciso di optare per questa. Onestamente non era tra le mie priorità, ma non mi sottraggo mai alla possibilità di un buon whodunit.

In sintesi: non avevo altissime aspettative rispetto a questo progetto cinematografico, per cui ammetto di essere rimasto piacevolmente sorpreso dal tono del film, dalle ottime interpretazione, i tempi comici (di mio gusto) e un risultato finale d'insieme ironico quanto basta, talvolta pungente, e tutto sommato godevole.
Poi, che sia un capolavoro non si può certo dire (Ciarán l'ha detestato), però ho apprezzato le atmosfere surreali e il circo di assurdi personaggi che condiscono la storia - tutti interpretati da attori di un certo livello - capitanati dall'inaspettatamente dinamico duo formato da Sam Rockwell e Saoirse Ronan. Divertente.
Cast: Sam Rockwell, Saoirse Ronan, Adrien Brody, Ruth Wilson, Reece Shearsmith, Harris Dickinson, David Oyelowo, Shirley Henderson, Sian Clifford, Pippa Bennett-Warner.

Vale o non vale: L'ho trovato molto piacevole e dal ritmo sufficientemente serrato, nonché magnificamente trainato dalla coppia Rockwell - Ronan che insieme fa scintille. Meno riuscito del carismatico "Knives Out", "See How They Run" riesce comunque a consegnare allo spettatore un prodotto finale di qualità. Non per tutti, ma gli amanti del genere whodunit in salsa comedy dovrebbero apprezzare.

Film 1942 - Vice

Intro: Avevo sempre voluto recuperarlo, ma onestamente mi mancava la motivazione. Questo periodo di quarantena irlandese ha portato ispirazione.

In sintesi: il motivo principale per cui volevo vedere questo film è, naturalmente, Amy Adams, qui alla sua sesta nomination all'Oscar, nona ai Golden Globes, settimana ai BAFTA. Non che l'argomento in sé non mi interessasse, però ammetto che recuperare la performance di una delle attrici più dotate in circolazione al momento fosse il mio personale main goal. E non sono rimasto deluso.
Diversamente da tanti biopic con declinazione da drammone politico, "Vice" scorre piuttosto agevolmente. Lo stile narrativo e di regia di Adam McKay - qui molto simile al suo precedente "The Big Short" - è incisivo e caratteristico e trovo che il maggiore punto a suo favore sia quello di incorporare nel racconto elementi esplicativi per quel pubblico che non abbia familiarità con il soggetto della storia, qui nella fattispecie la biografia di Dick Cheney.
Cheney, politico americano schivo - ma figura chiave rispetto alla guerra in Iraq post 11 settembre - è stato due volte vice presidente degli Stati Uniti sotto l'amministrazione Bush junior nonché, mi informa Wikipedia, uno dei politici con il tasso di approvazione più basso (13%) nel momento in cui la sua carica istituzionale è terminata. Insomma, non esattamente una figura amata dal poplo americano.
Al di là dei giudizi personali inevitabilmente suscitati da questo film, quello che mi ha colpito è come un uomo apparentemente così mediocre sia riuscito - e probabilmente riesca ancora - ad avere in pugno la gestione di una nazione intera e con così ampio spazio di manovra. Pur tenendo conto della drammatizzazione dei fatti che necessariamente un prodotto di fiction porta con sé, è impossibile non rimanere quantomeno colpiti da quanto quest'uomo riesca a fare e influenzare sulla sola base del fatto che, se una cosa la dice o la fa un'alta carica dello stato (come il presidente), allora tale cosa diventa moralmente accettabile. Sicuramente Cheney ha dimostrato del genio nel saper individuare e sfruttare così bene a suo vantaggio un area troppo poco definita del diritto americano.
Detto questo, "Vice" rimane un prodotto interessante, anche se onestamente un po' troppo lungo. Christian Bale è un magnifico protagonista a prescindere dalle sue capacità mimetiche e camaleontiche e questa performance dimostra ancora una volta il suo talento. Amy Adams qui ha un ruolo apparentemente più marginale e sicuramente più pacato, eppure è la spinta che dà propulsione a tutto il racconto. Senza Lynne Cheney non ci sarebbe il Dick Cheney politico di successo, per cui ho trovato che nel suo essere il +1 di questa storia, Adams sia riuscita con successo a ritagliarsi la visibilità giusta per il suo personaggio calibrando perfettamente la sua performance. Da Oscar? Forse no, ma il riconoscimento ci sta tutto. (In ogni caso battere Regina King a qualsiasi premio di categoria pare impossibile negli ultimi tempi.) Sono rimasto molto meno colpito dalla performance di Sam Rockwell, invece, qui un aitante George W. Bush per il quale non mi pare ci sia troppo spazio di approfondimento che vada oltre il dipingere il suo personaggio come stupido o una sorta di causa persa. In generale, invece, avrei preferito un po' più di spazio rispetto ad altre figure chiave dell'amministrazione Bush come Condoleezza Rice o Colin Powell.
In ogni caso, per quanto non sia rimasto tanto colpito da "Vice" quanto come dal precedente titolo di McKay, l'ho trovato comunque interessante, probabilmente più un punto di partenza per un futuro approfondimento sul soggetto che un elemento esaustivo sulla figura di Dick Cheney a tutto tondo.

Vale o non vale: Gli appassionati di biopic o di politica americana dovrebbero gradire questo prodotto ben fatto e che non tenta nemmeno per un secondo di nascondere la sua natura critica rispetto al suo oggetto d'indagine. In generale non un film per tutte le occasioni, ma il soggetto è interessante e i due protagonisti valgono la visione.
Premi: Candidato a 8 Oscar (Miglior film, regia, sceneggiatura originale, attore protagonista Bale, attrice non protagonista Adams, attore non protagonista Rockwell e montaggio), ha vinto quello per il Miglior trucco; delle 6 nomination ai Golden Globes (tra cui Miglior film), Bale ha vinto quello per il Miglior attore protagonista musical o commedia; 6 candidature ai BAFTA e vittoria per il montaggio. Tyler Perry candidato al Razzie per il Redeemer Award.

Film 1867 - Jojo Rabbit

Intro: In tanti ne avevano parlato benissimo e, purtroppo, mentre ero in Argentina non ero riuscito a vederlo al cinema. Per cui, appena l'ho trovato disponibile in streaming, non ho perso tempo e l'ho subito recuperato!

In sintesi: in soldoni, bambino pro Nazi che si immagina amicone di Hitler diventa amico di un'ebrea che la madre gli nasconde in casa. Il resto ve lo lascio scoprire.
Taika Waititi confeziona un film che prende in giro il nazismo e il suo leader - ma chi vi ha detto che siamo sulla falsa riga de "La vita è bella" vi ha perculato - e lo fa centrando sufficientemente il bersaglio (mainstream). Un prodotto non perfetto, ma è evidente che l'intento fosse positivo e in ogni caso il buon risultato finale fa sorvolare sull'a volte mancato approfondimento (specialmente di alcuni personaggi). A tratti fiaba, a tratti satira, a tratti dramma, a tratti un po' di quello che ci volete vedere, "Jojo Rabbit" funziona perché ha un suo ritmo e una sua voce e, soprattutto, un cast in gran spolvero, partendo da un protagonista estremamente dotato (Roman Griffin Davis), proseguendo per un Hitler surrealmente godibile (ricordiamoci che Taika Waititi è per metà Māori) e il personaggio migliore della storia, la madre sovversiva Scarlett Johansson (qui sì nomination all'Oscar meritata e, a mio avviso, statuetta scippata dalla compagna di altro film Laura Dern); nel mezzo c'è una coppia gay ancora nell'armadio (Alfie Allen e Sam Rockwell) e l'istruttrice del campo per giovani seguaci del führer Rebel Wilson, tre personaggi che avrebbero sicuramente goduto di qualche chance in più per raccontare se stessi, specialmente quest'ultima che, presentata così come, rimane un po' inutile alla storia. Sorprendentemente chi rimane più indigesta è proprio colei per la quale ci si aspetterebbe di simpatizzare di più, ovvero la piccola rifugiata Elsa (Thomasin McKenzie), molto spesso antipatica o comunque poco incline a rendersi piacevole. Non so se fosse volutamente Waititi o la storia originale di Christine Leunens a renderla già così, rimane il fatto che non si fa apprezzare facilmente.
In ogni caso "Jojo Rabbit" è un insolito film sulla seconda guerra mondiale che ritrae, a volte con sorprendente leggerezza, passaggi di un momento storico complesso e doloroso, pur non mancando mai di rispetto o facendo sentire a disagio lo spettatore. E' un grande pregio quello di Waititi, è in grado mettere in scena orrori pur facendolo con un tono mai pesante e, anzi, sempre fedele a quello che mi pare essere il suo stile narrativo (vedi "Thor: Ragnarok").

Vale o non vale: Nel complesso una buona pellicola, sicuramente una delle migliori tra quelle candidate all'Oscar quest'anno (lo so, d'altronde le proposte non erano granché). Non è stato il film che mi aspettavo, la storia di Jojo completamente diversa da ciò che mi ero immaginato, senza contare che la figura di Hitler ha qui tutto un altro valore, mentre io avevo pensato si trattasse di un personaggio più concreto. Ma bene così, una visione che è stata una sorpresa, una Scarlett Johansson che è stata un piacere da vedere, un buon prodotto che, con il suo piglio contemporaneo, ha raccontato una storia particolare ma ambientata in un'epoca storica cinematograficamente già ampiamente spolpata, aggiungendo il suo peculiare punto di vista. Interessante. Premi: Candidato a 6 Oscar, tra cui Miglior film e attrice non protagonista, vincendo quello per la Miglior sceneggiatura non originale; 2 nomination ai Golden Globe per Miglior film e attore protagonista (Roman Griffin Davis) e 1 BAFTA per la Miglior sceneggiatura non originale su 6 nomination (tra cui attrice non protagonista e colonna sonora).

Film 1852 - Richard Jewell

Intro: Ammetto che non ci fossero, per me, troppe attività ludiche in quel di Ushuaia. Una di queste è stata sicuramente l'andare al cinema nel multiplex alle porte della città argentina, un appuntamento settimanale che mi ha tenuto non poca compagnia nell'arco dei tre mesi che ho passato in Terra del Fuoco. Un pomeriggio ho proposto alla mia amica Claudia di accompagnarmici, avendo trovato il titolo perfetto per accontentare entrambi, io fan di Clint Eastwood e lei appassionata di pellicole basate su storie vere.

In sintesi: sembra che Eastwood ultimamente si stia concentrando sulla figura dell'eroe, analizzandola da vari punti di vista. C'è stato l'eroe patriottico con il fucile in mano di "American Sniper", quello che previene una catastrofe grazie a nervi freddi e lucidità di "Sully" e quello rappresentato qui, eroe e martire di una vicenda che ha a dir poco dell'incredibile.
La storia di "Richard Jewell" è surreale e difficile da digerire ed Eastwood la presenta senza esclusione di colpi, anche se i toni sono sempre pacati e, per certi versi, gentili. Saranno il contegno e la dedizione di Jewell o la sua incredibile capacità di piegarsi al destino - che sembra volerlo vedere fallire a tutti i costi - pur non rinunciando mai ai suoi valori e alla sua etica, di fatto questa pellicola potenzialmente tragica per toni e narrazione è, in realtà, estremamente pacata. Devo dire che, da un certo punto di vista, l'approccio al racconto mi ha ricordato molto quello dello stesso "Sully" o di "Gran Torino" o ancora del più recente "The Mule", tutte storie che sarebbero potute essere state raccontate in tonalità ben più drammatiche e sensazionalistiche e, invece, scelgono un approccio più moderato, non gridato, il tutto per un risultato finale che, forse proprio per questo, è ancora più potente. Magari "Richard Jewell" avrebbe necessitato di un minimo di pepe in più - se così si può dire -, di una spinta adrenalinica che infuocasse anche il pubblico meno affezionato alle opere più recenti del grandissimo Eastwood. Personalmente ho trovato questo prodotto efficace e ben realizzato, anche se il risultato al box-office è stato estremamente deludente ($45 milioni solo per produrre la pellicola), con uno degli esordi al botteghino americano più disastrosi di sempre. D'altronde, stritolato tra una marea di sequel e una data di uscita (13 dicembre) che richiama un pubblico attratto più dallo svago che dall'impegno, il film ha finito per perdere di visibilità. Ed è un peccato, perché si tratta di un buon prodotto che non manca di far riflettere - specialmente sul ruolo rivestito dai media nella società odierna - e mettere a fuoco una storia vera che, altrimenti, per molti sarebbe rimasta sconosciuta. Buon cast e ottime performance di Paul Walter Hauser, qui nel ruolo di protagonista, e una Kathy Bates che ci ricorda ancora una volta perché sia una tra le migliori attrici in circolazione.

Vale o non vale: Chi ama i recenti lavori di Eastwood dovrebbe rimanere soddisfatto anche da questo nuovo titolo, un buon prodotto di qualità capace di interessare lo spettatore e lasciarlo con non poco su cui riflettere a fine visione. Non un film per ogni occasione, ma sicuramente una scelta da considerare quando si sia alla ricerca di una pellicola non solo ben fatta e interessante, ma capace anche di proporre allo spettatore spunti di riflessione e perché no, anche per un'autoanalisi. Lo consiglio.

In sintesi: per quanto mi riguarda, il miglior film della stagione 2017. Brillante, geniale, toccante, recitato divinamente. Semplicemente un capolavoro; Frances McDormand è meravigliosa, sensazionale. Non fosse che il film è stupendo di per sé, basterebbe lei per rendere questo titolo assolutamente da guardare. E riguardare. Perché quando una sa fare bene il suo mestiere, si vede; grandissimo cast di comprimari. Il film vive sulle spalle di un fortissimo personaggio, Mildred (McDormand), e al contempo su quelle di chi le gravita attorno. Meritatissimo l'Oscar a Rockwell, che riesce finalmente ad ottenere la visibilità che gli spetta. E quest'anno ha fatto il bis...; ho trovato la trama non solo avvincente, ma tagliente, intelligente e ben scritta. Ci sono tutti gli ingredienti che rendono un'opera cinematografica perfetta e il risultato è magnifico. A differenza di una stagione cinematografica 2018 dove la vera qualità è stata assente, l'anno precedente è stato davvero un momento d'oro per quanto riguarda l'industria hollywoodiana. Immagino non si possa vincere tutti gli altri, per cui meglio godersi la magia, quando si verifica.

Olivia Munn and Niecy Nash revealed the nominees from the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood. Presenters were joined by SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris, SAG Awards committee chair JoBeth Williams, and SAG Awards committee member Elizabeth McLaughlin.

Film 783 - Charlie's Angels

Ogni tanto ne ho nostalgia. Poi mi ricordo che di questo film ho il dvd (e anche del secondo!).

Pensieri: Non dico che lo so a memoria, ma poco ci manca. Eppure questa versione anni zero del famosissimo telefilm degli anni '70 mi garba sempre.
Un ottimo spasso per qualsiasi momento che necessita di svago, frivolezze, ritmo e azione, tutto condito con botte da orbi, effetti speciali tra il kitsch e il roboante, tutto tenuto insieme dallo stile molto personale di McG che riesce nell'intento di rinfrescare un format di trent'anni prima traducendolo nel linguaggio contemporaneo: ovvero trasformando le 3 superamenti di Charlie in dive sexy glam da videoclip.
Viste 10 anni dopo le 3 ragazze sono sempre "cazzutissime", ma meno al passo con i tempi, troppo bloccate in una superficie che le rende bidimensionali, ognuna fedelissima ad un ruolo preconfezionato cui non si allontana mai. Ci sta, non stiamo parlando del reboot di James Bond, però è pacifico che inizialmente bisogna farci i conti (alias pace con noi stessi).
Presa coscienza dell'anima frivola di questo "Charlie's Angels" - e ancora di più del suo successivo "Charlie's Angels - Più che mai" - si può passare al divertimento puro, letteralmente trascinato da una Cameron Diaz in gran forma (in tutti i sensi) e dalle amiche-spalle Drew Barrymore e, meglio di quest'ultima, Lucy Liu vero gioiellino-finto orientale (è del Queens). Insieme formano le ragazze di Charlie del titolo e riprendono le orme delle originali del telefilm. Premesso che la serie tv non l'abbia mai vista, dubito fortemente che ci sia un richiamo di tipo stilistico con l'originale, quindi i fan del prodotto originale forse avranno storto un po' il naso, ma per creare la magia del grande incasso servivano nuovi elementi più freschi ed eccitanti come la tecnologia d'avanguardia, i combattimenti a tinte etniche, un'amicizia lesso-friendly, molti ammiccamenti sessuali e qualche comparsata di grido (Matt LeBlanc ha finito "Friends" nel 2004).
In generale, quindi, il mix che si viene a creare è una sorta di magico mondo del non plausibile che però va bene lo stesso, si fa guardare e anche un po' ammirare, tra voli pirotecnici, scalate a mani nude, paracadutaggi da aerei di linea e via discorrendo. Tutto è talmente caricato che, se non fosse ben architettato, sarebbe fastidioso. E invece, saranno le ragazze, sarà l'atmosfera spensierata, sarà che sai da subito che tutto andrà a finire bene, "Charlie's Angels" è uno spasso tanto baraccone che alla fine finisce per divertirti. E poi c'è "Independent Women part I" delle Destiny's Child come canzone dei titoli di coda. Furbata efficace!

Consigli: Azione tutta al femminile tra cazzotti, balletti e un trasformismo tanto camaleontico che le drag di "RuPaul's Drag Race" dovrebbero prendere nota. Divertente, superficiale, gioca con la scusa delle agenti segrete tostissime a fare il verso ad un mondo solitamente tutto al maschile e serissimo. Qui ci si diverte senza che niente sia mai preso davvero troppo sul serio. Poi c'è Bill Murray che fa John Bosley ed è uno spettacolo.
