Film 2446 - The Moment

Intro: Last Friday evening in Dublin before the two-week break in Fuerteventura, Spain. And we couldn't leave Ireland without going to the movies to catch this one!

Thoughts: I famously hate extremely loud movies, but this one I didn't mind too much. It gave me anxiety, yes, but I still enjoyed the ride.
I think the main selling point for me is Charli XCX: she's very entertaining and surprisingly good here. I know she's playing herself, so obviously it's a bit easier than playing a character from scratch, but she comes across as genuine and authentic, not forced, still able to channel that "Brat" energy even though Brat Summer ended a while ago now. Which brings me to my next point.
"Brat" came out on June 7, 2024. Brat Summer was "over" in September 2024, but then it experienced a resurgence after Charli's 2025 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival performance. I went to see Charli perform here in Dublin on June 17, 2025, and Brat Summer was still very much alive. So my question is: why wait until the beginning of 2026 to release this movie in theaters?
"The Moment" and Emerald Fennell's "Wuthering Heights" came out at the same time and, from a marketing perspective, it's a strange move. This movie is clearly connected to the album "Brat": they share the same art style and visuals, and although this is a mockumentary that aims to make fun of Brat Summer and its cultural impact, it heavily features "Brat", the tour, Charli's life, and the media attention around her. On the other hand, "Wuthering Heights" is directly connected to Charli's subsequent eponymous soundtrack album that she created for the film. And with the release of the first singles from the album, "House" and "Chains of Love", it seemed clear that Charli had entered a new era—even if it's currently tied to a film (a new album is apparently on the way).
In this sense, A24's "The Moment" feels a little bit too late. It should have come out earlier to link it more directly to "Brat" and make better use of the cultural phenomenon that Brat Summer proved to be. I'm not surprised that this movie didn't make a big splash at the box office: not only it came out to leat, but also it's a mockumentary and it's tied to an artist who is hugely famous, yes, but not everyone's cup of tea. Not to mention that the beef with Taylor Swift might have had an impact on whether people decided to give this film a go or not.
Anyway, I enjoyed "The Moment" enough, although it wasn't what I expected. I found some moments funny—like when the whole tour starts very "Brat" and ends up becoming a sellout version of itself, or when Charli tries to pay with the Brat card but it doesn't actually work—and I appreciated how committed she was to this project. I didn't enjoy how stressed the story and editing made me feel, but I understand it's intentional, and I wish they had used more songs from "Brat", considering how heavily they seemed to rely on the album and Brat Summer in promoting this film.

Worth a watch?: Not a film I would necessarily rewatch, but I'm glad I saw it in the cinema rather than at home, because it's one of those movies that is better experienced on the big screen, with a proper Dolby Surround sound system. It's a whole experience, and it really overwhelms you at the beginning. The story captures Charli's mental state well, and the film translates it into images that affect you whether you want it to or not. Some bits are funny, others do a good job of highlighting how surreal the music business can be—how everything can be turned into money and what people are willing to do to please the crowd, reach a bigger audience, and stay culturally relevant. There's definitely a lot of good intentions in this movie, but maybe too many ideas for just one project.

Film 2359 - Trap

Intro: Niamh and I have a list of film we want to watch. She doesn't necessarily remembers them all, but I do. This is one of the movies on the list that we didn't manage to watch at the movies whe it came out.

Thoughts: I've been saying it for ages now regarding M. Night Shyamalan's movies: great concept, poor execution.
I think we can all agree that Shyamalan has been trying to channel that plot twist from the ending of "The Sixth Sense" ever since, it's there in all of his movies. Sometimes it works, most times it doesn't, because in order to convey the crazy unexpect turn, he has to sacrifice part of his idea, or the audience trust, or in general the believability of the story he's telling.
In this case, as i said, "Trap" has an interesting starting point: there's a serial killer on the loose, yet he's trapped in a concert venue with his daughter. No one knows he's the killer, so there's room for him to try to escape which, obviously he tries to do. And that's when the story starts to crumble.
Although on paper the idea is interesting, in reality too many elements of this story are barely glued together. As audience, you really, really have to suspend your disbelief to allow the story to continue. A concert venue for one of the biggest stars out there, there's people everywhere, police everywhere, cameras everywhere... but no one is minding the fact that this man is going wherever he wants, to the point that he ventures backstage through a trapdoor while the performance of a song is happening... like, how?!
Anyway, the story being too stretched aside, I'll admit that "Trap" isn't necessarily a bad ride. Josh Hartnett is one of the most underrated actors out there and it's sad, because he delivers a solid performance here and carries the whole movie (together with Jonathan Langdon, who's performance reminded me a bit of Lil Rel Howery in "Get Out"). Yes, everything is crazy here and barely make sense, but overall I've seen worse, especially coming from M. Night Shyamalan.

Worth a watch?: More than a horror movie, a thriller. The story doesn't always work, but it reminded me a little bit of "Smile 2", although this once isn't as good.
Lady Raven is played by Night Shyamalan's daughter Saleka and, though she doesn't have much screen time in the first part of the movie, she kinda steals the show towards the end.

Film 2291 - Spice World

Intro: Per il mio secondo appuntamento cinematografico con il proiettore, ho scelto un film iconico.

In sintesi: onestamente non ricordavo per niente questo film e, devo dire, probabilmente per la sua natura così caotica.
Non fosse il film delle Spice Girls, sicuramente non avrei perso tempo a rivederlo: la trama è praticamente inesistente, le ragazze caotiche quanto il loro modo di recitare le battute (si parlano una sull'altra, in un sacco di passaggi non si capisce cosa stiano dicendo), il risultato finale quasi allucinogeno. Eppure, nonostante il caos più totale, "Spice World" funziona su molteplici livelli (nessuno dei quali ha un valore puramente cinematografico, sia chiaro).
Innanzitutto ha una connessione nostalgica con quello specifico momento storico: il Girl Power, il Brit pop, le girl band, gli anni '90. E' tutto incapsulato perfettamente in questo prodotto che definirei culturale nel suo essere così fedele a ciò che rappresenta (ancora oggi). Per chi quel momento lo ha vissuto, un prodotto come questo ha sicuramente valore.
Poi, da non sottovalutare, "Spice World" funziona a livello musicale. Ogni canzone è praticamente una hit, un sacco di momenti della storia sono dedicati a performance e il focus centrale del racconto è un concerto, per cui ci sono innumerevoli momenti in cui la musica è, di fatto, la storia.
Ancora, un'altra componente che funziona è la comicità. Per quanto assurdo e camp, "Spice World" fa ridere, specialmente se si conoscono bene i 5 membri che compongo il gruppo. Non sarà certo una comicità rivoluzionaria, ma funziona per questo film che mai (fortunatamente) si prende sul serio. E le ragazze stanno al gioco.
Il che mi porta al mio ultimo punto: le Spice Girls. Non saranno attrici, non saranno movie stars, non vinceranno mai un Oscar, però qui sono evidentemente il motivo trainante (e a giusta ragione) di tutta la baracca. C'è una certa dose di inconsapevolezza, quasi, che traspare dalla loro performance, ce la mettono tutta e si mettono sempre in gioco. Fa quasi tenerezza rivederle così giovani e piene di entusiasmo e, allo stesso tempo, così consapevoli del ruolo che stanno giocandosu scala globale: c'è una trasformazione in atto e loro sono parte del cambiamento. Un cambiamento che certo non prendono alla leggera e passa anche per questo prodotto collaterale del loro successo. "Spice World" è, come c'è da aspettarsi, carico di temi cari al gruppo: il Girl Power, il femminismo, l'indipendenza, il diritto alla propria individualità, l'emancipazione e il desiderio di fare le cose a modo proprio, di reclamare un successo che derivi dalle proprie capacità.
Certo, ci si sarebbe potuti applicare un po' di più sul far trasparire di questi elementi positivi evitando il calderone esplosivo e sbandato che è "Spice World", però il risultato finale è un giro di giostra divertenete quanto basta e capace di trasportarci, per un attimo, indietro nel tempo. Non sarà un valore assoluto, ma lo è sicuramente per i fan delle Spice Girls.

Vale o non vale: Onestamente non ricordavo quanto questo film si concentrasse sull'elemento comico che, soprendentemente, funziona in quanto declinato in chiave folle universo parallelo (ci sono pure gli alieni e un salto in corsa sul Tower Bridge mentre il ponte si sta aprendo).
Decisamente non un film per tutti, ma i nostalgici del Girl Power troveranno conforto in questa capsula del tempo che è "Spice World".
Premi: Candidato a 7 Razzie Awards (tra cui peggior film, sceneggiatura e attore non protagonista per Moore), il film ha vinto per la peggior attrice (tutte le Spice Girls).

Pensieri: Katy è Katy e non ci posso fare niente: a me piace.
Lo so, canta dal vivo che a volte fa orrore e le canzoni sono più che altro molto orecchiabili, ma non so cosa ci sia in lei che tanto mi attrae. Tant'è, il dvd di questo concerto me lo sono gustato per bene. E' stato come tornare a Milano alla tappa del 21 febbraio 2015 quando ho assistito dal vivo al tour - il suo secondo su 3 che vedo - qui però con una vista preferenziale. Questo titolo, diversamente dal precedente "Katy Perry: Part of Me" apparso al cinema è esclusivamente il racconto filmato di tutto il concerto, un one woman show tutto in mano alla Perry che canta, balla, si dimena, vola e parla abbondantemente con il pubblico (australiano). E' tutto molto spettacolare e, a livello di montaggio, davvero ben architettato, così da sembrare un eterno videoclip dinamico, costantemente in movimento, coloratissimo. Piaccia o meno l'artista, è innegabile che l'esperienza del Prismatic World Tour sia piacevole e di grande intrattenimento. Per chi lo ha apprezzato, questo regalo portato in tv da Epix è certamente un ulteriore strumento con cui apprezzare lo show.

Consigli: Stiamo parlando di un prodotto mirato esclusivamente ai fans della Perry o degli show musicali in grande stile. Se le canzoni o la cantante non piacciono, meglio lasciar perdere. Gli indecisi potrebbero anche trovarlo piacevole, visto che si tratta di un concerto molto ben organizzato, cantato discretamente e molto, molto spettacolare. Anche solo il finale con "Fireworks" basta da solo a dimostrarlo. Nel caso si avesse voglia di un po' di musica pop coloratissima, spensierata, piacevole, questo "Katy Perry: The Prismatic World Tour" può essere un valido accompagnamento.

Film 222 - Spice Girls - Il film

Pensieri: Una carrellata negli anni '90, una lacrimuccia per ciò che è stato, un pensiero ai ricordi (ormai) d'infanzia. Ah, che colpo al cuore guardare questo film a un giorno esatto dal proprio 24esimo compleanno.
Non fosse legato ad un milione di ricordi, sia chiaro, questa pellicola non varrebbe la spesa di nemmeno una parola, ma, di fatto, i ricordi sono preziosi indipendentemente da ciò a cui si legano.
E allora, lo dico, è stato bello rivedere le cinque Spice Girls in quello che è stato il più estremo esperimento collaterale dell'assalto pop alla cultura di 15anni fa: un film su un gruppo musicale, interpretato dal gruppo musicale, con colonna sonora del gruppo musicale. Un affronto sfacciato a chi le ha sempre criticate, un prodotto ancora più smerciabile ai fans sfegatati dell'epoca.
Non un flop dal punto di vista commerciale (Wiki mi dice 75 milioni di dollari di incasso mondiale - parliamo del 1997, non dimentichiamolo - con un ricavato triplicato rispetto alla spesa per produrlo), con gadget di ogni genere e promo un po' ovunque nel globo (senza contare i CD venduti), ma sicuramente un disastro a livello di critica (un Razzie ad ognuna delle ragazze come peggiori attrici dell'anno).
Insomma, un film inutile, per carità, ma contestualizzato può prendere un suo senso. Da non sottovalutare il potere nostalgico (ricordo ancora come fosse ieri quando mia madre mi portò a vederlo al cinema parrocchiale...).
Ps. Numerosi camei importanti: Elvis Costello, Bob Geldof, Bob Hoskins, Elton John, Roger Moore e un ancora non famoso Hugh Laurie.
