Film 2252 - Mommie Dearest

Intro: Ne avevo sempre sentito parlare, ma non avevo mai avuto l'occasione di vederlo. Finalmente qualche settimana fa è giunto il momento...

In sintesi: non sapevo bene cosa aspettarmi da questo "Mommie Dearest", principalmente perché negli anni ne avevo sentito parlare malissimo oppure sentito citare da svariati concorrenti, quando non Rupaul stesso, nei vari franchise di Drag Race. Altro non sapevo.
Di fatto, preparato com'ero alla straripanza camp, ho davvero apprezzato questo film nella sua assurda esagerazione e ho finalmente compreso il motivo di tanto apprezzamento della comunità LGBT: la storia incredibile, la protagonista senza freni, lo scorcio della vita glamour di una star hollywoodiana a cui si susseguono retroscena scabrosi tra abusi e deliri... insomma, è tutto talmente eccessivo da risultare, inevitabilmente, iconico (ma non per i motivo che la produzione i aspettava).
Faye Dunaway fa il film insieme alla storia - tratta dall'autobiagrafia omonia scritta da Christina Crawford, la figlia adottiva dell'attrice - in una combinazione esplosiva di fatti raccontati all'ennesima potenza, per un risultato finale inaspettatamente comico che, pur involontario, finisce per regalare al film lo stato di titolo di culto.

Box Office: $25 milioni
Vale o non vale: Non una buona pellicola, ma sicuramente una di cui parlare. Ci sono tantissime frasi celebri tratte da questo film e può essere divertente vedere quante se ne conoscono oppure scoprirne altre che non si sapeva fossero state create per questo titolo. Iconico per tutta una serie di motivi, vedere per credere.
Premi: Candidato a 9 Razzie Awards nel 1982, ne ha vinti 7 - tra cui peggior film, attrice, attore e attrice non protagonisti (rispettivamente Steve Forrest e Diana Scarwid) e sceneggiatura - a cui se n'è aggiunto uno nel 1992 per peggior film del decennio. Nel 2005 il film è stato ulteriormente candidato, questa volta senza vincere, nella categoria peggior film degli ultimi 25 anni.

Razzie Awards 2021: nomination e vincitori

Dovevano essere rivelate domenica e, invece, sono uscite oggi le nomination per i Razzie Awards di quest'anno. E, diciamocelo pure, mai come quest'anno c'è stata abbondanza di pessima qualità cinematografica. 

Curiosamente, comunque, mai come quest'anno i Razzie "onorano" i Golden Globes candidando non pochi titoli o performance a cui l'HFPA questa edizione ha riconosciuto una nomination: "Music" e Kate Hudson, Glenn Close per "Hillbilly Elegy" e Maria Bakalova per il secondo "Borat" (anche se nel suo caso è evidente che la nomination nella categoria Worst Screen Combo sia dovuta principalmente alla presenza di Rudy Giuliani).

Con le nomination agli Oscar a un tiro di schioppo (saranno annunciate questo lunedì), l'annuncio di oggi dei Razzies ci ricorda che siamo davvero agli sgoccioli di quest'anno terribile per le cerimonie di premiazione.

I Razzie Awards si terranno il 24 aprile, come da tradizione un giorno prima degli Academy Awards.

Intro: In preparazione del reboot con Alicia Vikander, siamo tornati indietro a quel tempo in cui i capezzoli di Angelina Jolie riuscivano ancora a fermare il traffico.

In sintesi: più videogioco che film, questo primo "Tomb Raider" si piazza nella categoria tentativo-di-estorcere-soldi-ai-fan-del-videogame (e della Jolie), mancando totalmente di fantasia, appeal e - peggio che peggio - qualcosa da dire. Non che ci si potesse aspettare granché da una storia che mixa allineamenti planetari, tombe egizie ed eclissi di sole, ma la speranza che si trattasse più di un'esperienza cinematografica visivamente interessante che di una boiata pazzesca era la premessa che mi ha spinto a recuperare questo titolo. Ed è andata così bene che il secondo non l'ho nemmeno guardato.

Vale o non vale: Non saprei dire se i fan del gioco possano apprezzare la visione; sicuramente i fan della Jolie dovrebbero godere della performance ampiamente agonistica della loro beniamina. Ciò detto, tutti gli altri possono anche evitare di recuperare il film.
Premi: Angelina Jolie candidata al Razzie come Peggior attrice (anche per "Original Sin").

In sintesi: "The Bounty Hunter" non solo ha un pretesto assurdo alla base - lui cacciatore di taglie, lei viola la libertà vigilata, lui la deve portare in prigione. Di mezzo c'è il fatto che i due erano sposati -, ma non è nemmeno in grado di portarlo a quel punto tanto estremo da risultare piacevolmente divertente; in un momento in cui le carriere di Aniston e Butler volavano alto, un titolo discutibile come questo era ancora considerato in grado di far successo al box-office. La realtà ha ampiamente smentito (per fortuna).

Intro: Era da un po' che volevo riscoprire un po' dei Bond che avevo visto da ragazzo e ne ho approfittato in uno dei tanti momenti film al Takarakka.

In sintesi: Pierce Brosnan come Bond non mi ha mai fatto impazzire e rivederlo nel ruolo ha confermato la mia avversione. Soprattutto perché Daniel Craig è oramai imbattibile;
fanno un po' ridere le intraprendenze tecnologiche scelte allora, quando adesso nella saga si gioca al ribasso. Meno "esagerazioni" e più trama avrebbero aiutato anche qui;
il casting non è dei migliori, con una Sophie Marceau femme fatalona e una Denise Richards nei panni di una fisica nucleare e, per noi soprattutto, una Maria Grazia Cucinotta cecchina. Non serve aggiungere altro, fa già ridere così;
ho apprezzato il colpo di scena della trama, che dà ad uno dei personaggi una doppiezza forse inaspettata (e che non vedevo l'ora di rivedere).

Intro: I've never watched a Tyler Perry movie before (and I heard they're terrible), so I was keen to indulge in this pretty little sin of mine to get my own idea about Mr. Perry's work.

Briefly: not that I was expecting it to be great or even entertaining, yet still I was hoping to be proved wrong. Instead, "Boo! A Madea Halloween" is even worst than I thought;
badly acted and poorly directed, Tyler Perry comedy-horror movie is silly and pointless, incapable of being either funny or scary. I was particularly disappointed, especially because this picture had a huge success over the American audience since it managed to gain the top spot at the box-office. I'm still trying to figure it out how or why.

Film 1513 - A Bad Moms Christmas

Intro: I was looking forward of seeing this movie! And I had to wait a lot of time before I was able to download it, so no surprise when I say that I was really excited when we decided to watch it, finally!

Briefly: it's not easy to write and direct a sequel for a surprisingly profitable movie in less than a year. Jon Lucas and Scott Moore managed to do that, even though "A Bad Moms Christmas" isn't as funny or deliciously entertaining as the first "Bad Moms". And that's a shame. Maybe with a little more time spent on the script, it could have been a great outrageously guilty pleasure as the first movie is;
I appreciate the choice of Christmas time as the center of the story, still I can't really relate to all the struggling the moms have to go through here. Decorations and gifts apparently are a bigger deal than spending time together staying with your family, so it's kinda difficult for me to understand that kind of craziness and anxiety that comes from 'make everything perfect' for the Holidays;
Kunis, Bell and Hahn are again perfect for their roles, with Hahn being the scandalously weird sex addicted mom of the group. I really loved her here. Hines, Baranski and Sarandon are basically clones of their on-screen daughters, which is probably predictable, but no funny enough in my opinion;
"A Bad Moms Christmas" isn't good enough to justify its presence on the market. "Bad Moms" isn't perfect, but at least points out some true facts: moms are overstressed, they have to look after their families and probably go to work as well, they don't have a lot of time for themselves; also, aside from the mom point of view, the first movie shows that women can be delightfully outrageously funny as much as men can be, something the audience needs to be reminded of occasionally. "Bad Moms 2", instead, even though it tries to recreate the same shockingly dirty atmosphere of its predecessor, fails to deliver a message of female empowerment and unity that grows through friendship and self-awareness. What we get here is a comedy movie that delivers a few dirty laughs, but nothing more than that.

Film 1429 - Enough

Titolo scelto un po' a caso tra quelli presenti nel catalogo Netflix (ok non è vero, non così a caso: quando ho visto che c'era, ho scelto di vederlo di proposito...).

Pensieri: Si sa che JLo ha tanti talenti ma che tra questi di sicuro manca quello per la recitazione. Anche qui, soprattutto avendola seguita in lingua originale, posso dire che le buone intenzioni ci sono tutte, ma l'inadeguatezza per un ruolo più difficile e impegnato del solito si sente particolarmente.
I momenti drammatici sono quelli più complicati dove una contrita Jennifer sfodera una vocina che più stridula non si può e una serie di rughe d'espressione sulla fronte a suggerire il disagio del suo personaggio, eppure non si può fare a meno di notare l'innaturalezza e lo sforzo che la cantante/attrice è costretta a fare, pur ottenendo solamente un risultato mediocre.
Di certo non è aiutata dalla sceneggiatura, tanto mediocre quanto prevedibile, capace di salti temporali applicati con disarmante facilità, tralasciando troppo spesso approfondimenti importanti, primo fra tutti la questione della piccola figlia, per la maggior parte del tempo totalmente accondiscendente e apatica nei confronti di una situazione familiare allo sfascio e non poche volte pericolosa. JLo risolve in fretta: se la porta dietro per tutta l'America sena dirle o spiegarle nulla e affronta l'argomento solo quando il Dottor Carter di "ER" le tampona e sperona con la macchina per tentare di farle andare fuori strada. Mah...
Dunque una sorta di concorso di colpa tra un casting sfortunato e una storia non esattamente indimenticabile per un risultato finale che è banale, sì, ma non così tremendo come uno potrebbe aspettarsi. C'è ritmo e un certo pathos dal momento in cui cominciano le botte e bisogna ammettere che non si può fare a meno di domandarsi come farà o cosa architetterà JLo per scappare dalle grinfie del marito da sogno trasformatosi in incubo. Da questo punto di vista il film mi ha ricordato moltissimo alcuni prodotti simili basati su una protagonista che, sola ad affrontare il dramma, si rimbocca le maniche per salvarsi ed affrontare una situazione altrimenti potenzialmente mortale; penso a "La prossima vittima", "A letto con il nemico" o "Colpevole d'innocenza" o tanti altri ancora. Come tutti questi titoli, anche "Enough" sembra più interessato a rappresentare la violenza in maniera particolarmente cruda e dettagliata finendo per sacrificare quello che potrebbe essere invece l'aspetto più interessante della storia se approfondito, ovvero la componente psicologica. Forse ad Hollywood c'è meno tempo per pensare e tendenzialmente solo quello per reagire...

Consigli: Mi pare evidente che ci sia la volontà di presentare al pubblico una storia che abbia non solo un senso, ma anche una sorta di valore. Nonostante questo e il fatto che si tratti di un adattamento del bestseller "Black and Blue" di Anna Quindlen, bisogna ammettere che si sia davanti ad un prodotto mediocre, di puro intrattenimento e a tratti voyeuristica caratterizzazione tanto ci si prende del tempo per rappresentare le violenze domestiche. Detto ciò, tra tutto quello che ho visto fare a Jennifer Lopez, questa è certamente una non solo delle sue parti migliori, ma anche delle sue interpretazioni più decenti. Non so se possa essere di consolazione per qualcuno - o addirittura incuriosire -, in ogni caso un titolo assolutamente perdibile, eppure innocuo se scelto per una serata con qualche venatura thriller.

Razzie Awards 2017: nomination e vincitori

Solitamente, è vero, sono le nomination ai Razzie ad uscire prima di quelle degli Oscar, ma quest'anno è stato tutto molto particolare e già che sono riuscito a pubblicare il consueto post sulle nomination degli Academy Awards nonostante 38 di febbre è stato un miracolo. Quindi eccole, in ritardo, anche le candidature ai Razzie di questo 2017. Ovvero il peggio del peggio. Circa.
Come da tradizione i vincitori saranno svelati la sera prima degli Oscar, quindi l'appuntamento è per sabato 25 febbraio per scoprire a chi andranno i famigerati lamponi (io quoto moltissimo il documentario su Hillary)!

Razzie Awards 2016: nomination e vincitori

Come di consueto, a un giorno dalle candidature agli Oscar, vengono annunciate anche quelle dei Razzie Awards, conosciuti per premiare il peggio della stagione. Mentre in anni passati ho trovato abbastanza congruenti le nomination rispetto alla bassa qualità dei prodotti, francamente mi trovo in dusaccordo con le 6 candidature a "Jupiter Ascending" e "Pixels", titoli non certo fortunatissimi, ma nemmeno i peggiori dell'anno.
Chi vincerà, comunque? Il mistero svelato il 27 febbraio, ovviamente a un giorno dalla cerimonia degli Oscar.

Razzie Awards 2015: nomination e vincitori

Come sempre i Razzie Awards precedono di un giorno le nomination all'Oscar (domani, finalmente!) ed eccoli, puntuali ed immancabili, a sentenziare il peggio della stagione appena passata tra titoli giustamente menzionati e qualche sorpresa.

Si sa che prima o poi è probabile che uno scivolone recitativo lo commettano tutti, eppure quest'anno sorprende per la presenza di nomi di certo non avvezzi a questo tipo di premio, come Charlize Theron, Kiefer Sutherland, Melissa McCarthy o Susan Sarandon (rimasta a quota 0 candidature fino al 2013 quando ne ha ricevuta una nella categoria Worst Screen Couple per "Indovina perché ti odio").
In ogni caso alcune scelte sono giustissime e saranno quelle che plausibilmente - più delle altre probabilmente solo provocatorie - porteranno a casa più premi.

Novità di quest'anno la categoria dei redenti, ovvero una cinquina in cui attori massacrati nel corso delle precedenti edizioni sono candidati grazie ai nuovi, positivi meriti delle loro carriere. Vedrei bene un bel premio di redenzione attoriale per Ben Affleck. I vincitori saranno annunciati, naturalmente, il giorno prima degli Academy Awards, ovvero sabato 21 febbraio. Film 782 - Twister

Un'altra pellicola sui tornado...

Film 782: "Twister" (1996) di Jan de Bont

Pensieri: Chiaro che visivamente parliamo di un risultato molto diverso dall'ultimo "Into the Storm", eppure "Twister" vive di un'energia propria che è difficile, se non impossibile, ritrovare nel gemello contemporaneo.
La giovanissima Helen Hunt è una forza della natura trascinante e travolgente al pari degli uragani che segue con il suo team e l'elemento scientifico che tratta la trama (studiare cosa succede all'interno del tornado, letteralmente nell'occhio del ciclone) ha un appeal abbastanza concreto. L'intendo, qui, è meno puramente intrattenitivo e un minimo più strutturato e si utilizza la spettacolarità di un fenomeno naturale distruttivo sfruttandone non solamente l'imponente spettacolarità, ma proponendo un racconto che ha anche un minimo di scopo.
Chiaramente l'intento di una pellicola come questa è assolutamente commerciale, ma eravamo ancora nel periodo in cui - anche solo per realizzare un prodotto come questo - si provava a giustificarlo attraverso una legittimazione anche narrativa (e non solo visiva). Per dirla facile: un po' di trama, anche solo qualcosina, almeno c'era.
Ora, chiaramente ci sono 18 anni di differenza tra un titolo e l'altro, ma risulta difficile non confrontarli anche solo un pochino. Io da bravo onnivoro del cinema facile, tutto effetti speciali, made in USA apprezzo entrambi i titoli, per motivi diversi. "Twister", considerando gli anni, vince soprattutto perché riesce ad evocare le stesse emozioni di "Into the Storm", ma con quasi 20anni di anticipo. Direi che lo si può considerare davvero un cult del genere 'disaster movie', sempre bello da rivedere.
Ps. E' stato il primo film a uscire in dvd.

Consigli: Se i membri votanti dei Razzie Award avessero potuto vedere cosa aspettava il futuro del cinema commerciale americano probabilmente non avrebbero castigato "Twister" con il premio per la Peggior sceneggiatura di un film che supera l'incasso dei 100 milioni di dollari. Chiaramente qui non parliamo di un capolavoro e, nonostante tutto, l'intento rimane sempre quello di spettacolarizzare la natura e catturare lo spettatore con le evidenti capacità della produzione nel ricreare queste situazioni limite (2 nomination all'Oscar per effetti speciali e sonoro). Io mi sento di dire che "Twister" è un bel film, nell'ottica di una scelta di disimpegno per una serata tra amici per rilassarsi e spegnere il cervello.

Film 724 - Godzilla

Per prepararmi a dovere al nuovo film o reboot che dir si voglia...

Film 724: "Godzilla" (1998) di Roland Emmerich

Pensieri: Devo ammettere che per molti, molti anni questo film è stato il mio preferito su tutti gli altri. Prima della passione per il cinema, prima di capire la differenza tra cinema indipendente e di massa, prima di vedere talmente tanti film da potermi rendere conto che questo è effettivamente una boiata super... ecco, "Godzilla" targato Emmerich è stato per me il top del top. Avevo 11 anni ed ero andato a vederlo con mio padre al cinema. A me bastava questo.
16 anni dopo l'arrivo del bestione in sala, la 'magia' rivive e un fratellastro più tecnologico di quello del '98 arriva sul grande schermo per tentare di cancellare uno dei flop di sceneggiatura più eclatante degli anni '90. 2 Razzie Awards vinti e addirittura una presa di distanze dal mostro, considerato troppo diverso dall'originale. Cito Wiki: "The "Godzilla" on the film was considered so different from the original Godzilla that the term GINO, "Godzilla In Name Only", was coined by critic Richard Pusateri to distinguish the character apart from the original Godzilla. Toho (Godzilla's parent owners) later recognized the creature as a totally different monster and officially rebranded and retrademarked it as Zilla for later appearances". Insomma, già ai tempi questa pellicola non aveva raccolto appieno il successo sperato, riuscendo ad intascare un buon incasso, ma racimolando non poche critiche.
Questo "Godzilla", è inutile nasconderlo, è ogettivamente brutto e trash. Effetti speciali a parte - che per l'epoca erano miracolosi - fallisce su troppi, numerosi fronti. La trama è superficiale e la sensazione è sempre quella che si stia giocando a qualche videogame. Matthew Broderick è un protagonista debole a cui manca la stoffa del leading character. Peggio ancora Maria Pitillo - sconosciuta all'epoca e affossata con questa prova da "attrice" - che è una protagonista femminile priva di carisma, appeal e capacità recitativa (e sono stato buono). Il suo personaggio, poi, è pessimo.
Infine, la sensazionalità delle scene coadiuvate dall'uso del computer è guastata dall'utilizzo blando che ne è fatto. E' una spettacolarità fine a se stessa che non aggiunge assolutamente nulla al risultato finale se non far sembrare il tutto una versione più caotica e rumorosa di "Jurassic Park".
Il risultato finale, quindi, oltre ad essere troppo lungo è anche inferiore alle aspettative. Non mi intendo della saga "Godzilla" e non posso che giudicare questo film per quello che ho visto, cioè veramente poco. Manca mordente, approfondimento e qualcosa che caratterizzi la storia in maniera più personale invece di contare solamente sull'aspetto sorpresa degli effetti speciali e lo stordimento degli spettatori ad ogni urlo del lucertolone. Da un certo punto di vista lo si può anche considerare un titolo trash di culto - dal mio punto di vista il valore affettivo del ricordo personale ha un ascendente -, ma è innegabile che, viste le aspettative (sia allora che oggi), questo "Godzilla" 1998 è assolutamente deludente.

Razzie Awards 2014: nomination e vincitori

Quando escono le nomination ai Razzie Awards è sempre segnale dell'arrivo degli Academy Awards.
Saranno, infatti, annunciate domani pomeriggio ora italiana le candidature agli Oscar 2014 per il meglio del cinema "mondiale", ovvero americano.

Di oggi, invece, l'annuncio dei nominati al peggio del peggio della stagione cinematografica passata grazie, appunto, ai Razzie che formalizzano il loro disprezzo verso il cattivo cinema attraverso le nomination speculari rispetto agli Oscar, con accezione negativa.
Quest'anno colpisce la presenza di Johnny Depp, fino ad oggi salvo dal negativo riconoscimento proprio come Naomi Watts. Assi pigliatutto di questa edizione sembrano essere "After Earth" e "Un weekend da bamboccioni 2" oltre che, come sempre, Lindsay Lohan e Tyler Perry. Presenti anche Sylvester Stallone, Ashton Kutcher, Kim Kardashian, la famiglia Smith e i cantanti Chris Brown, Selena Gomez, Lady Gaga.

Pensieri: Una carrellata negli anni '90, una lacrimuccia per ciò che è stato, un pensiero ai ricordi (ormai) d'infanzia. Ah, che colpo al cuore guardare questo film a un giorno esatto dal proprio 24esimo compleanno.
Non fosse legato ad un milione di ricordi, sia chiaro, questa pellicola non varrebbe la spesa di nemmeno una parola, ma, di fatto, i ricordi sono preziosi indipendentemente da ciò a cui si legano.
E allora, lo dico, è stato bello rivedere le cinque Spice Girls in quello che è stato il più estremo esperimento collaterale dell'assalto pop alla cultura di 15anni fa: un film su un gruppo musicale, interpretato dal gruppo musicale, con colonna sonora del gruppo musicale. Un affronto sfacciato a chi le ha sempre criticate, un prodotto ancora più smerciabile ai fans sfegatati dell'epoca.
Non un flop dal punto di vista commerciale (Wiki mi dice 75 milioni di dollari di incasso mondiale - parliamo del 1997, non dimentichiamolo - con un ricavato triplicato rispetto alla spesa per produrlo), con gadget di ogni genere e promo un po' ovunque nel globo (senza contare i CD venduti), ma sicuramente un disastro a livello di critica (un Razzie ad ognuna delle ragazze come peggiori attrici dell'anno).
Insomma, un film inutile, per carità, ma contestualizzato può prendere un suo senso. Da non sottovalutare il potere nostalgico (ricordo ancora come fosse ieri quando mia madre mi portò a vederlo al cinema parrocchiale...).
Ps. Numerosi camei importanti: Elvis Costello, Bob Geldof, Bob Hoskins, Elton John, Roger Moore e un ancora non famoso Hugh Laurie.
