Film 2474 - Sinners

Intro: It was only a matter of time before I gave this one another go. Especially after I spent months listening to the "Rocky Road to Dublin” song from its soundtrack.

Thoughts: I like it the first time around, but this time I loved it.
There's a lot to take in when you watch "Sinners". It's a vampire story, a horror movie, a musical, it's set in a historical setting, and it focuses on racial issues (of the African-Americans mainly, but the Irish as well). In many ways, this film reminded me of "Get Out": a social commentary of the African-American experience framed in the horror movie genre, where the scary elements of the plot are hightened by the horrors of reality. And interesting enough, both movies won the Oscar for Ogiginal Screenplay.
On top of a great story, "Sinners" fetures an amazing cast of talents: Wunmi Mosaku gives possibly her best performance so far and Jack O'Connell is delisiously evil, while Delroy Lindo finally get his first Oscar nomination as the old town harmonica player. Leading them all, Michael B. Jordan plays both twins Elijah and Elias, in a dual performance that secured him the Oscar for Best actor. Now, don't get me wrong, I think it was about time Jordan finally got some award recognition and he 100% deserved the win, but I can't not awkclnoledge the fact that Timothée Chalamet's strange Oscar campaign definitely worked in his advantage. It's possible that, without the theater and ballet controversy, Chalament could have won instead as he was predicted as the favourite to win in the category for at least half of the award season. That said, I'm glad Jordan won instead: it might look like a "quieter" performance in a way - especially compared to Chalament's on in "Marty Supreme" - but it is indeed a great one. Playing twins, there was definitely a challenge there in differentiating both characters in a way that would make them both stand out and Jordan absolutely succeded. Especially watching the movie this second time around, I noticed the different mannerisms, the different way he carries himself depending on which character he's playing, details I didn't notice before as I was more focused on following the overall story and keeping up with the dialogues (yes, I struggled a bit with all the different accents).
All in all, I think "Sinners" is the perfect example of what great movies can do: transport you to somewhere different you've never been before, tell you a compelling story you can fully immerse in, trascend you into someone else's life for a couple of hours making you feel what they feel and go through. It's magical. And that's why I love movies so much.

Worth a watch?: Look, it might not be your cup of tea and it's absolutely fine. Personally, I loved it: it's a feast for the eyes and ears (the soundtrack by Ludwig Göransson is crazy good), it's an original story full of creativity and meaning that goes beyond the expected and seens before "it's a vampire story". There's so much more to this film, it's shot beautifully, all the performances are top notch and Ryan Coogler's vision really comes to life here.

Intro: Probably one of the cinematic event of the year, Niamh went to see it and liked it so much she wanted to bring me as well. And off we went, of course.

Thoughts: One of the most interesting movies I've seen so far this year: what a ride.
Although I have to admit the story takes its time to get to the juicy part, it definitely is a good ride. Yes, the first hour sees no vampire showing up whatsoever - and for a second there I was starting to think we were never getting there - but once things start to happen and everything gets in motion, it is a pleasure to watch. One of the highlights for me (watching this mvovie in Ireland) was the "Rocky Road to Dublin" musical number: very unexpected, extremely well executed and somehow perfectly fitting in the story.
The cast is solid, I'm a sucker for Michael B. Jordan (with whom I share my birthday Feb. 9, 1987) and he's great here, as usual. I wish Hollywood would give him more chances like this one and, to be honest, more awards. Wunmi Mosaku was a marvellous surprise, she's a scene stealer. I saw her before in "His House" and "Loki" and she's so magnetic you can't take your eyes off of her. Happy to see Hailee Steinfeld in something new for her, she's so talented, but she needs more projects like this one.
Overall, an amazing cinematic experience.

Worth a watch?: It takes a moment to get to the horror bits (the movie is 137 minutes long), but once it gets there there's no turning back. Not your usual Hollywood scary movie, but a well made, constructed and narrated story, with an amazing cast and stunning visuals. I hope it gets its flowers at the Oscars (but the ceremony is still so far away...).

In sintesi: "Up" è sicurmante un film sempre carino e molto spassoso, anche se presenta un certo effetto nostalgia che non mi fa venire voglia di rivederlo tanto quanto altri prodotti di casa Pixar. In generale, comunque, sempre un prodotto di eccellente qualità e i due protagonisti presentano una dinamica di coppia/opposti perfetta.

Film 1767 - Sahara

Intro: L'avevo visto al cinema con padre e mi pareva di ricordare mi fosse piaciuto. Siccome fu un gigantesco flop al botteghino, per non parlare delle pessime critiche, mi sembrava giunto il momento, a 15 anni di distanza, di dar a questa pellicola una seconda chance.

In sintesi: chi l'avrebbe detto, nel 2005, che 2 dei protagonisti di questa pellicola fossero destinati a vincere un Oscar?! NESSUNO. Dai, forse Penélope era già più plausibile, ma Matthew McConaughey Miglior attore protagonista proprio non si riusciva a concepire neanche nelle più sfrenate fantasie da trip metanfetaminico. Per non parlare del fatto che questa storia racconta (anche) di un'epidemia...
Sconvolgenti avvenimenti futuri a parte, "Sahara" è un film d'avventura con budget da colossal ($160 milioni di dollari) che mixa l'ambientazione desertica de "La mummia", ci incastra dentro una sorta di caccia al tesoro alla "Il mistero dei Templari", cerca quel brivido alla 007 e rilancia con il fascino - qui francamente un po' troppo abbrustolito - di Matthew McConaughey e i suoi addominali, il tutto per un risultato finale noioso e poco elettrizzante. Sono rimasto francamente sorpreso dall'incapacità di questo prodotto commerciale di risultare di buon (o quantomeno decente) intrattenimento.
Insomma, tutto considerato, da questo "Sahara" mi aspettavo (e ricordavo) molto di più.

Poi, per carità, si lascia guardare e dimenticare senza fatica, ma di certo non è di quei prodotti che ti lasciano soddisfatto.

Film 801 - Up

Quasi 800 recensioni fa avevo visto questo film per la prima volta, rimanendo soddisfatto della visione e ricevendo in regalo, pochi mesi dopo, il dvd. Da allora non c'è più stata occasione di ripetere la visione...

Pensieri: "Up", ovvero un botteghino stellare, 2 Oscar vinti e un plebiscito di apprezzamenti ed essere ancora uno dei film di punta dell'universo Pixar (e Disney). C'è stato un vero e proprio momento d'oro dell'animazione per le due case produttrici che, un titolo dopo l'altro, riuscivano a fare incetta di consensi di critica e pubblico, grandi incassi e premi Oscar ("Ratatouille", "WALL-E", "Toy Story 3" fino a "Brave" circa) e certamente questa pellicola è una delle più iconiche e di successo. Chi, infatti, ancora oggi non ha presente la stupenda scena della casa che si alza in volo grazie all'ausilio di non si sa quanti palloncini ad elio dai colori dell'arcobaleno? Fin da subito "Up" è riuscito a ritagliarsi uno spazio importante tra i cult dell'animazione contemporanea.
Rivedere il film questa volta in dvd e non in un orrendo streaming mal saturato ha certamente aumentato il mio consenso e apprezzamento, riuscendo così a cogliere lo sfavillante lavoro di colori fatto per ricreare, appunto, i palloncini ma anche per mettere in scena i bellissimi paesaggi e la figura quasi mitologica del Beccaccino, qui oggetto del desiderio dei protagonisti insieme al viaggio in Venezuela verso le Cascate Paradiso.
Ciò detto, e ribadendo che "Up" mi è piaciuto e lo trovo un ottimo esempio di intrattenimento per famiglie, con un protagonista (il ragazzino) che è qualcosa di meraviglioso, rimane il fatto che, per quanto mi riguarda, il colpo di fulmine non è scattato. Paradossalmente - ho la fobia dei topi, ma forse per contrasto anche proprio per questo - "Ratatouille" mi ha conquistato molto di più. Chiaramente è un'accezione molto personale e il mio modo di pormi nei confronti di questa pellicola rimane, appunto, il mio.

Consigli: Direi che è un titolo adatto veramente ad ogni occasione. Perfetto per una serata dopo una faticosa giornata di lavoro come per una domenica pomeriggio spiaggiati sul divano. Diverte, intrattiene ed incanta grazie ad alcune trovate poetiche che lasciano lo spettatore affascinato. La voce originale del cattivo Charles Muntz è del premio Oscar Christopher Plummer.

Film 5 - Up

Questa settimana è stata lunga e non sempre facile. Anche oggi avevo bisogno di qualcosa che mi facesse sorridere e mi tirasse su il morale. Ho iniziato a vedere "Un amore all'improvviso", ma non mi soddisfaceva del tutto. Così quando è arrivato Ale ne ho approfittato per metterlo in pausa (in realtà per la seconda volta) e cominciare qualcos'altro...

Pensieri: Cosa rende speciale Carl Fredricksen? Che è burbero, ma non antipatico. Tenero, ma non sdolcinato. Fragile, ma indistruttibile. Ti commuovi per la storia della sua vita, per il suo amore incondizionato verso la moglie e il suo grande sogno. E realizzarlo non sarà facile! Ma Carl ha un alleato fantastico: Russell. Il bambino cicciottello che per guadagnarsi una medaglia per aver aiutato un anziano si ritrova coinvolto nell'avventura di dell'anziano protagonista.
Cavoli, questo film è proprio ben fatto, suscita emozioni da dramma e sfodera battute da commedia come se niente fosse. Pensavo esagerassero con le recensioni, ma vale proprio la pena di vederlo. Solo per assistere al librarsi in aria dei palloncini al momento del decollo: magico.
La grafica è stupenda, realizzato davvero bene. Credo che i 175 milioni di dollari di budget siano stati intelligentemente spesi!
Scommetto 2 cose: vincerà l'Oscar 2010 come miglior film d'animazione e riceverà la nomination come miglior film (fino ad ora l'unico cartone a ricevere la nomination per miglior film è stato "La bella e la bestia", ma dalla prossima edizione la categoria miglior film avrà un totale di 10 nomination - non più 5 - e quindi aumenteranno le possibilità di ricevere la candidatura).

Consigli: E' terapeutico per qualsiasi umore. Stupisce per l'idea e la bellissima realizzazione; diverte per le gag; commuove per la storia d'amore; esalta per l'avventura; colpisce per l'originalità. Di più non si può volere!
