Thoughts: For a moment there, it felt like I was only going to the movies to watch "Obsession" and, yeah, it was kinda like that.
On my third watch, I have to admit that I still enjoyed this movie quite a lot. It didn't matter that I knew all the scary bits and where the story would go; this film felt fresh every time I watched it, which is an accomplishment in itself.
Pair that with an astonishing box office performance ($475 million worldwide on a budget of $750,000), Curry Barker's filmmaking career skyrocketing, and Inde Navarrette's and Michael Johnston's performances putting them on Hollywood's radar... You can't deny that "Obsession" is the movie surprise of the year.
Obviously I'm a huge horror film fan, so this movie was clearly my cup of tea to begin with, but the success behind this piece of media doesn't just rely on horror fans. The script is genius precisely because it isn't overly complicated compared to other similar outings in the genre: there's an enchanted object, a wish that leads to a curse, and protagonists who have to deal with the consequences. It's that simple, yet so effective. And the nuances this story presents are quite interesting and disturbing, possibly more so than the horror element itself: Nikki (Navarrette) is stripped of her agency and forced into a romantic relationship whether she likes it or not. Bear (Johnston) is shy and timid at the beginning, only to reveal his true colors as the story progresses and the abuse escalates. And he's not willing to stop. If anything, he's resentful that Nikki still won't love him back. It's tragic and terrifying at the same time.
So yeah, I do love this film. I think it's a great example of the heights the horror genre can reach when it's done right and, right now, "Obsession" is still my favourite movie of 2026.

Worth a watch?: There is already Oscar buzz for this one, particularly for the Best Actress and Screenplay categories. Will these predictions come to fruition? It's way too early to say, but as the current movie landscape stands, there's clearly a chance (especially after last year's Best Supporting Actress Oscar win for "Weapons"). In the meantime, if for whatever crazy reason you still haven't seen "Obsession", do yourself a favour and go see it. I rest my case.

Film 2474 - Sinners

Intro: It was only a matter of time before I gave this one another go. Especially after I spent months listening to the "Rocky Road to Dublin” song from its soundtrack.

Thoughts: I like it the first time around, but this time I loved it.
There's a lot to take in when you watch "Sinners". It's a vampire story, a horror movie, a musical, it's set in a historical setting, and it focuses on racial issues (of the African-Americans mainly, but the Irish as well). In many ways, this film reminded me of "Get Out": a social commentary of the African-American experience framed in the horror movie genre, where the scary elements of the plot are hightened by the horrors of reality. And interesting enough, both movies won the Oscar for Ogiginal Screenplay.
On top of a great story, "Sinners" fetures an amazing cast of talents: Wunmi Mosaku gives possibly her best performance so far and Jack O'Connell is delisiously evil, while Delroy Lindo finally get his first Oscar nomination as the old town harmonica player. Leading them all, Michael B. Jordan plays both twins Elijah and Elias, in a dual performance that secured him the Oscar for Best actor. Now, don't get me wrong, I think it was about time Jordan finally got some award recognition and he 100% deserved the win, but I can't not awkclnoledge the fact that Timothée Chalamet's strange Oscar campaign definitely worked in his advantage. It's possible that, without the theater and ballet controversy, Chalament could have won instead as he was predicted as the favourite to win in the category for at least half of the award season. That said, I'm glad Jordan won instead: it might look like a "quieter" performance in a way - especially compared to Chalament's on in "Marty Supreme" - but it is indeed a great one. Playing twins, there was definitely a challenge there in differentiating both characters in a way that would make them both stand out and Jordan absolutely succeded. Especially watching the movie this second time around, I noticed the different mannerisms, the different way he carries himself depending on which character he's playing, details I didn't notice before as I was more focused on following the overall story and keeping up with the dialogues (yes, I struggled a bit with all the different accents).
All in all, I think "Sinners" is the perfect example of what great movies can do: transport you to somewhere different you've never been before, tell you a compelling story you can fully immerse in, trascend you into someone else's life for a couple of hours making you feel what they feel and go through. It's magical. And that's why I love movies so much.

Worth a watch?: Look, it might not be your cup of tea and it's absolutely fine. Personally, I loved it: it's a feast for the eyes and ears (the soundtrack by Ludwig Göransson is crazy good), it's an original story full of creativity and meaning that goes beyond the expected and seens before "it's a vampire story". There's so much more to this film, it's shot beautifully, all the performances are top notch and Ryan Coogler's vision really comes to life here.
Give it a go and see how you feel!

Film 2468 - The Running Man

Intro: A month ago I went back to Italy and stayed for three days at my cousin's in Igea Marina. The second night I was there we decided to watch a movie and eat piadina, and this is what the streaming platform could offer in terms of entertainment. Not necessarily what I would have watched otherwise, but one of the best options available anyway.

Thoughts: I mean, I heard it wasn't good and that it flopped hard at the box office last year (this movie cost $110 million just to produce), but I didn't expect it to be bad, in a way. I love Edgar Wright's previous movies like "Hot Fuzz", "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World", "Last Night in Soho" and especially "Baby Driver", so I was sure he could deliver a decent film. Additionally, this story is an adaptation of a Stephen King novel, so overall this whole "The Running Man" experience seemed to have potential.
Reality is, there's just too much going on here to be enjoyable. The pace is so fast that there's barely any time to process what you've just watched before the story immediately pushes you to the next plot point. And it doesn't help that the screenplay throws so much at you that it's almost impossible to let it all sink in. It's simply overcrowded.
It also doesn't help that this is far too similar to things we've seen before and seen done better: "The Hunger Games" franchise, "1984", "Squid Game", and, more recently, "The Long Walk" (also adapted from a Stephen King novel) immediately come to mind. It's clear that this movie has potential; the idea is there and so is part of the execution, but overall it feels too overcrowded with characters and plot points, resulting in a story that somehow feels both half-baked and overlong. I wonder how it would have worked if this movie had been split into two separate films that actually took the time to tell the story properly, slowing down the pace and allowing us to sit with the characters, what they go through, and how they react to the environment they're immersed in.
Unfortunately that isn't the case, and what we're left with is a fast-paced science-fiction action film that includes dystopian elements while barely addressing the implications of its own themes: social inequality, privacy, voyeurism, and the extent one would go to achieve their goals.
On a personal side note, it's impossible not to notice how Glen Powell's career seems to be losing momentum rather quickly. He's not a bad actor by any means, and he's clearly a perfect fit for a product like this, but I think his recent flops ("The Blue Angels", "How to Make a Killing" and this one) are testament to how willing Hollywood is to bet everything on a new face before they've had the time to prove their value. Again, this isn't a dig at Powell, who does a decent job here, but rather what I consider an interesting example of how quickly things evolve in the world of cinema and how it's becoming harder and rarer to find new actors capable of reaching that A-list status which, back in the day, almost guaranteed box-office success and long-term career stability.

Worth a watch?: It's not so bad that it's unwatchable, but it's definitely not a good movie. Everything happens too fast, there's no time to process any information before we jump to the next scene, and it's overcrowded with characters. There's potential in there and the main idea behind the story is interesting, but the consequences and implications of having to survive on a lethal reality television show aren't fully addressed. Instead, the spectacle overshadows any meaningful commentary on relevant issues, which are only explored at a very surface level.

Film 2462 - Weapons

Thoughts: I've expressed how much I like this film, how great I think it is, and what an amazing example it is of how a horror movie can become an iconic piece of pop culture, so I'll keep it short and sweet.
I think "Weapons" is the best movie that came out last year. It's a cinematic crazy ride, and Amy Madigan is a force of nature here. Her work as Aunt Gladys is untouchable, and I'm so glad she got her flowers. She deserved that Supporting Actress Oscar and, for once, the Academy made the right call. "Weapons" is very much an ensemble film, yet she's impossible to forget, as her impact goes far beyond her performance on screen.
I love this movie. It's inventive, well-written, smart, and has something to say. And this is, especially in the horror genre, an amazing feat to achieve.

Intro: The second movie was coming out and I'd never seen (or heard of, to be honest) the first one, so, under Niamh's suggestion, I gave it a go.

Thoughts: A fun ride and a very inventive story, I quite enjoyed "Ready or Not".
I really didn't know what to expect and I wasn't sure I would enjoy this one, but I actually really did. I think Samara Weaving is great in the lead role and her physical chops are on full display here, proving to the audience that she not only can carry a whole movie on her shoulders, but that she's actually perfect for the genre and a movie star in the making. I've seen her in a bunch of things ("Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri", "Snake Eyes" and "Scream VI") but never as the lead, so this was really my introduction to her. And what an introduction! She's the star of the show, and deservedly so.
For the rest, "Ready or Not" lives on a simple premise - from the IMDb logline: "A bride's wedding night takes a sinister turn when her eccentric new in-laws force her to take part in a terrifying game." - and goes all in on the execution: a scary cat-and-mouse game, the fight for survival, and a potential curse that seems more like an urban legend than a real thing, until the ending shows the audience whether there was any truth to it.
It's not for the faint of heart, but I had a great time.

It stems from a simple idea, but it's great to witness how the plot never takes the easy route and actually takes the time to explore unexpected scenarios until the very end. If you like this kind of comedy horror film, "Ready or Not" - and even more so "Ready or Not 2: Here I Come" - is the cinematic experience for you. Awards: /

Film 2445 - Send Help

Intro: It came out at the end of January and I couldn't go straight away, but I didn't want to miss it before it left theaters (especially since I was heading to Fuerteventura, Spain). So Niamh and I made an effort to catch it at the cinema before it was too late. And I always find it curious how often I end up watching a movie about a plane crash right before I’m meant to fly somewhere...

Thoughts: If anything, I think this movie should've made way more money than it actually did! It's a great ride—hilarious at times, violently unapologetic, and led by a fantastic duo. In particular, Rachel McAdams once again proves what a powerhouse she is, regardless of the genre. Here, we get Regina George on steroids, and it's fantastic!
The movie starts where you'd expect: an underappreciated worker with no social life but a ton of social awkwardness is gunning for a promotion that never materialises. When her old boss is out of the picture and his son (Dylan O'Brien) becomes the new CEO, he chooses to promote his buddy and plans to fire Linda (McAdams) after a business trip to Bangkok. Things quickly shift when the plane crashes, and the only two survivors are Linda and her new boss, leaving them stranded on a deserted island, hoping to eventually be rescued. This is where Linda's passion for the TV show "Survivor" comes in handy, as the power dynamic quickly shifts and she suddenly takes charge, being the only one of the two actually capable of surviving in this unexpected scenario. From here on, you'd expect the story to go in a certain direction—but God, how wrong you'd be! Many twists and turns follow, leading to one of the most unexpected finales I've seen in a while. And look, nobody reinvented the wheel here, but it's nice to see a story that takes risks and goes darker in tone without being afraid of alienating the audience. That's why I think "Send Help" felt so refreshing.
In many ways, this movie reminded me a lot of Ruben Östlund's "Triangle of Sadness", but in a less artsy way, if that makes sense. It's clear that this is a commercial endeavour, and that's absolutely fine—Sam Raimi clearly knows what he's doing, which is why the end result is so satisfying to watch.

Film 2443 - The Long Walk

Intro: I didn't even know this movie existed before randomly watching a TikTok about the best movies that came out last year. This film was highly ranked and praised, so I was interested in giving it a go.

Thoughts: There are a lot of adaptations of a Stephen King's novel out there, and not all of them are good. This one is.
The idea behind this story is simple and effective: a group of teenage boys compete in an annual contest known as "The Long Walk," in which they must maintain a certain walking speed or get shot (IMDb). Walk for as long as you can—there's only one winner and no finish line.
In theory, it's insane to think that someone would willingly participate in this "competition," but for the sake of this story, I won't focus too much on that. Yes, there is a prize involved, but how desperate do you have to be to participate knowing that your chances of winning are 1 in 50?
Anyway, the premise of this film is intriguing, and the execution is overall extremely well made. I was skeptical at the beginning, as this is a story of constant movement with no fixed location. Before watching "The Long Walk," it's hard to picture how the movie is going to portray this concept—something that works well on paper but doesn't necessarily translate into what we consider a conventional storyline for the big screen. Yet, Francis Lawrence manages to deliver a cohesive and entertaining piece of media that is never boring or overstimulating for the audience, which I find extremely impressive. On top of that, all the actors deliver strong performances, and I was particularly impressed with Cooper Hoffman—the son of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman—who gives a solid performance.
Overall, this movie reminded me a lot of "The Hunger Games" franchise: a deadly competition, the promise of enduring glory for the winner, the voyeuristic aspect of it (the walk is live-streamed for the whole country to watch), and young adults competing against each other but eventually bonding over this sadistic experience. There's less background story here—we're thrown into the action almost immediately and never leave it until the end—yet the similarities with Suzanne Collins's story are still there. And I think it's only fitting that the same director delivered both this film and four out of the five "Hunger Games" movies. Chapeau.

Film 2437 - 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple

Intro: We watched the previous one that only came out last year, and of course we couldn't miss this one..

Thoughts: "The Bone Temple" is a good follow-up to the previous "28 Years Later", and the quality of these two movies together is surprisingly high. I'm saying surprisingly just because it's not often that a relatively small franchise like this one gets a trilogy sequel more than 20 years after the original movie came out and still maintains such consistency in quality. Even more so considering this one and the previous outing hit theaters only 6 months apart.
Timelines aside, "The Bone Temple" focuses heavily on Ralph Fiennes' and Jack O'Connell's characters from the previous movie. The two give stellar performances, and their character journeys are both extreme and satisfying. After his Oscar nomination last year (he should have won), it looks like we're witnessing a Ralph Fiennes renaissance, and I'm all here for it.
My only criticism of this film is the level of violence displayed. I'm not a prude, and I understand this is a work of fiction, but it was tough to witness all the torture sequences, and after a while I honestly couldn't take it anymore.
The storyline between Dr. Ian Kelson (Fiennes) and Samson (Chi Lewis-Parry) is predictable at times, but it's probably the most interesting part of the story. It will be interesting to see how the zombie monster evolves after what happens to him in this second chapter.
Overall, "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple" is a good movie and an excellent sequel, well directed by Nia DaCosta ("Candyman", "The Marvels", "Hedda"). It's a pity that it didn't make enough money at the box office (the production budget was $63 million). Maybe the January release was too soon and hurt its performance, or possibly this franchise isn't strong enough to justify a trilogy so long after the original movie came out. Either way, the shooting of the third movie depended on the performance of this film, so it's unclear if this story will see its end at all. I have my fingers crossed!
P.S. As rumored before the movie came out, Cillian Murphy makes a cameo appearance at the end of the film, reprising his original role from the first "28 Days Later".

Film 2422 - Frankenstein

Intro: When it came out on Netflix, everybody was talking about it and the reviews were good, so I was curious to give this movie a try.

Thoughts: Much ado about nothing? It's not bad, but I'm not sure where all the fuss is coming from, to be honest.
Maybe my expectations were too high, as usual, but I was genuinely expecting something way more epic from this film. Mainly I didn't like how much green screen was used and how evident it was. I don't expect the production to move to Antarctica to shoot the scene in the icy water, but I was surprised by how fake the whole environment felt and looked, considering this movie cost $120 million to produce.
And I'll be even more honest here: is Jacob Elordi's performance so memorable that it deserves all the accolades it's getting? I'm not sure. Is it a bad performance? Absolutely not, but an Oscar nomination for it? Uhm.
All in all, "Frankenstein" is an entertaining enough movie. The costumes are breathtaking and we get the chance to see Mia Goth play two roles (one of which with... eyebrows!), but to be completely honest I didn't care much for Victor Frankenstein's story, and while watching the movie I kept thinking how much I would have preferred to be watching "Young Frankenstein" instead.

Personally, though, it's a movie I wouldn't rewatch.

To no one’s surprise, I enjoyed this second watch as well. I remembered enough of the movie to know what to expect; still, it didn’t ruin the experience for me. I still think it’s a great addition to the supernatural horror genre, and Ethan Hawke is an amazing baddie, especially considering he acts with a mask on for almost the entire film.
One thing I really appreciate about "The Black Phone" is how grounded in reality it feels, even though the supernatural element of the story is so prominent.

Thoughts: Unexpectedly, my favourite movie of 2025 — so it was just a matter of time before I rewatched it.
This second time around, I enjoyed "Weapons" even more because I was able to pay attention to details I hadn’t noticed the first time I saw it in cinemas. It also felt less episodic this time; knowing the plot beforehand made the whole experience more cohesive, even though it’s split into different parts from the various characters' points of view.
Needless to say, apart from being a great horror movie, the standout of "Weapons" is Amy Madigan's performance. Back in the summer, not many people anticipated that her Gladys could become a vehicle for her second Oscar nomination, yet it happened. She even won at the Critics' Choice Awards for Best Supporting Actress, which was amazing to see — finally, some well-deserved recognition for her and for the horror genre in general. Unfortunately, missing out at the Golden Globes — where she lost to Teyana Taylor for "One Battle After Another" — and not receiving that BAFTA nomination were good indications that her chances of actually winning the Oscar gradually decreased, shifting from being a serious contender to simply being happy to be nominated and recognised.
Which is sad, because not only would her win have been a fantastic moment, but it also kind of repeats what happened last year with the "Anora" vs. "The Substance" situation: Demi Moore's performance was overlooked, and the Academy chose to reward a younger actress, once again reinforcing the young vs. older trope (which is, ironically, the core theme of "The Substance") and the general lack of support for the (body) horror genre when it comes to major acting awards. And don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with Mikey Madison's performance in "Anora"; I just feel like she could have had another opportunity to win an Oscar later in her career. Not to mention that the cultural impact "The Substance" had over the past couple of years is undeniable, and seeing Moore’s performance recognised would have been the cherry on top.
Going back to "Weapons," I think this movie is great and an impressive horror achievement. It was a smash hit at the box office, it’s still culturally relevant to this day, and overall, it’s simply an extremely well-made film.

Thoughts: Another terrifying true story, but this documentary isn't as effective as the previous one we watched. Not a bad movie by any means, yet I didn't find it as compelling or as well told as the previous documentaries we watched. The story is less sensational, in the sense that the facts presented are closer to what you would expect from a typical true crime case. It's obviously a heartbreaking story, and it's devastating to witness what happened to this poor man and his family, but A "Deadly American Marriage" didn't quite glue me to my chair, if that makes sense.

Intro: I wasn't planning to watch it, to be honest, but when everybody started talking about it in a favorable manner, I kinda got curious.

Thoughts: I didn’t read the book, so this was definitely an unexpected, crazy ride for me.
I don’t think "The Housemaid" is necessarily a good movie, but it’s definitely an entertaining one. Amanda Seyfried is great in it and perfectly fits her role. Sydney Sweeney, Brandon Sklenar, and Michele Morrone are also there.
I think, in general, the movie is too long (131 minutes), and some parts could have been cut without really damaging the end result. Especially towards the end—and after all the flashbacks showing how we got there—the repetitiveness starts to show, and you really want the story to end. Once the teeth, hair, and cuts twists are put into place, it starts to feel like there’s more shock value than actual narrative, so things get a bit too crazy.
Overall, though, "The Housemaid" is better than you might expect, in the sense that for as crazy as it is, you still end up having a good enough time. Or maybe my expectations were just too low.

Thoughts: I'll be honest, not a big fan of this one. It's not bad per se, it just didn't deliver to the potential of its premise.
The imagination is there, the story has some interesting twists - althought the biggest one you can see it coming from a mile away - but ultimately "Together" is not as gripping as you would expect. The body horror and physical stunts are great - the visual effects really help here - but there's something missing and ultimately the movie didn't resonate too much with me. Something similar we've seen last year could be "The Substance", but that movie reaches a level of iconic that is never matched here. Dave Franco and Alison Brie are really committed though, and they're a great pair on the big screen.

Thoughts: One of the most interesting movies I've seen so far this year: what a ride.
Although I have to admit the story takes its time to get to the juicy part, it definitely is a good ride. Yes, the first hour sees no vampire showing up whatsoever - and for a second there I was starting to think we were never getting there - but once things start to happen and everything gets in motion, it is a pleasure to watch. One of the highlights for me (watching this mvovie in Ireland) was the "Rocky Road to Dublin" musical number: very unexpected, extremely well executed and somehow perfectly fitting in the story.
The cast is solid, I'm a sucker for Michael B. Jordan (with whom I share my birthday Feb. 9, 1987) and he's great here, as usual. I wish Hollywood would give him more chances like this one and, to be honest, more awards. Wunmi Mosaku was a marvellous surprise, she's a scene stealer. I saw her before in "His House" and "Loki" and she's so magnetic you can't take your eyes off of her. Happy to see Hailee Steinfeld in something new for her, she's so talented, but she needs more projects like this one.
Overall, an amazing cinematic experience.

I hope it gets its flowers at the Oscars (but the ceremony is still so far away...).

Thoughts: Did I enjoy it? Absolutely. Was it as revolutionary and groundbreaking as some reviews made it out to be? Not really.
"Companion" is a good sci-fi thriller with a little bit of horror and humor in it and it works well, althoigh the idea of a robot lover (the companion) that gains conciousness (or freedom) and turn agains her partner (or captor) isn't necessarily new. To be honest, it gave me "Black Mirror" vibes (which is good).
The cast is great, Sophie Thatcher does an amazing job and is a great lead - and perfect for the part - while Jack Quaid continues to do great work. I was happy to see Harvey Guillén outside his familiar Guillermo clothes ("What We Do in the Shadows").
Overall a good watch.

Thoughts: I have to be honest, I didn't particularly like this movie. I had high expectations because I was extremely excited to see Téa Leoni on the big screen again + the trailer seemed really good and "Death of a Unicorn" seemed to have all the card to be at least a good movie. Reality is, it's not great.
As a dark comedy, it's not really funny. It's definitely extravagant, I'll give it that, but other than that there's not much else. The cast is amazing, but not necessarily used to their best potential: Jenna Ortega is playing Jenna Ortega playing a pissed (borderline, at this point) teenager, Will Poulter tries to be the comedic relief and mostly succedes but not entirely, Téa Leoni is basically playing Rosamund Pike's character in "Saltburn" and Paul Rudd is good at doing himself/Ant-Man, but when it comes to other facial expressions... there's not a lot going on.
Top that with a story that doesn't deliver what you would expect - there's a million side characters that you don't really care about but they keep on being introduced and killed, but it doesn't add anything to the story and also it's not funny - and it's more odd than fantasy black comedy, then what you have left is a little bit of disappointment.
Again, the idea has potential, but the delivery didn't thrill me.

Thoughts: Not exactly a masterpiece, I don't really think this movie serves as a great reboot of this franchise.
Christopher Abbott is a good lead and I liked how they tackled the sow transformation into a werewolf, especially in terms of how his senses change, but other than this. nothing really stood up with me. Especially the big plot twist regarding the creature that attacks Abbott's character: you can tell from a mile away who the creature is, so no surprise there.
A bit of a waste of Christopher Abbott's and Julia Garner's talent to be honest.

Thoughts: I love legal drams, so I had high hopes for this one. In the end, tho, "The Whole Truth" isn't as powerul as it promises it to be when watching the trailer.
The movie has a very slow pace and the performances are a bit underwelhming, mostly because the story isn't that exciting. And it's a pity, because the cast is great and this genre of movies I usually really enjoy.
Ps. The screenplay is written by Nicholas Kazan, the son of famous director and 2 times Oscar winner Elia Kazan.

Intro: The second movie I watched on Christmas day is one I had heard of, but didn't know what was about. So I reluctantly decided to give it a chance, not knowing what to expect.

Thoughts: I didn't expect to enjoy this movie as much as I did. It's not groundbreaking by any means, but it definitely a better-than-expected thriller that once again showcase Taron Egerton's talent as a leading man.
Because of its story and setting, "Carry-On" also heavily reminded me of several other movies like "Flightplan", "Red Eye" and "Non-Stop", all of which are set in an airport, although this one doesn't take place on an actual plane.

That said, I really enjoyed this movie and as the first new movie I watched this year - and by this I mean a movie I had never watched before - I was happily impressed.
Not unforgettable, but definitely enjoyable.
Cast: Taron Egerton, Sofia Carson, Danielle Deadwyler, Theo Rossi, Logan Marshall-Green, Jason Bateman.

Worth a watch?: Usually I don't particularly enjoy Netflix's movies, but this one I did.
