Grammy Awards 2016: nomination e vincitori

Annunciate nella giornata di ieri, le candidature ai 58esimi Grammy Awards non hanno regalato particolari emozioni, più che altro perché ci si poteva abbastanza aspettare quassi sarebbero stati i nomi principalmente presenti. Per vedere se le nomination si tramuteranno in premio vero e proprio bisognerà aspettare lunedì 15 febbraio, giorno di consegna dei grammofoni d'oro.
Per la parte di questa premiazione che ci interessa qui, ecco le nomination relative al mondo del cinema (e tv) che contemplano candidati eleggibili nel periodo che va dal 1 ottobre 2014 al 30 settembre 2015.

Film 891 - Whiplash

Tra le pellicole degli Oscar che ero più curioso di vedere...

Pensieri: Sono rimasto super colpito da questa pellicola, energica, tostissima, dura come un pugno allo stomaco e capace di mettermi un'ansia e un'agitazione addosso che mai mi sarei aspettato. E, nonostante tutto, un film che mi ha convinto appieno.
La prima cosa che mi interessava appurare relativamente a questo progetto di Damien Chazelle era la prova attoriale di J.K. Simmons, attore da sempre spalla di numerosissime altre produzioni (tutti e 3 i primi "Spider-Man" di Raimi, "Thank You for Smoking", "Juno", "Tra le nuvole" e tanti, tanti altri) e mai davvero considerato quanto, invece, si sarebbe meritato. Premesso che ero felice a priori che finalmente riconoscessero il suo talento, ora che ho presente per quale ruolo ha vinto praticamente ogni tipo di riconoscimento cinematografico dall'Oscar in giù, sono anche convinto che sia un successo più che meritato. Il suo Fletcher è uno stronzo che lo vorresti buttare da un ponte, ma Simmons è riuscito in un ritratto così intenso, forte e credibile che da solo vale i 107 minuti di pellicola. Poi, a dirla tutta, anche Miles Teller, il protagonista di questa storia di musica e sacrificio, è piuttosto bravo, perfetto nell'incarnare il disorientamento e la tenacia, la consapevolezza di avere un talento e la fatica di doverlo tirare fuori e trovare il modo per farlo, nonostante le non poche avversità e la tostissima concorrenza. Il dilemma di un giovane che vuole sfondare e diventare il migliore in quello che fa (batterista), ma non sa se veramente ha i numeri per farcela.
Di certo "Whiplash" presenta un percorso di formazione inedito e difficile anche da seguire, considerato quanto impegno ci mette Fletcher per non perdere lo status di 'stronzo dell'anno' con i suoi studenti che ogni giorno vivono in una specie di classe del terrore dove solo la perfezione assoluta è tollerata. Solo i migliori procedono, solo i più forti sopravvivono (anche letteralmente).
Il sacrificio richiesto alle giovani promesse è totale, devono fondersi con la propria arte musicale e impegnarsi con tanta abnegazione che in confronto i 3 anni di corsa di "Forrest Gump" sono una passeggiata in campagna. Ci vorrà tutto la determinazione di questo mondo per avere successo nello spietato mondo del jazz, capace di innalzarti a divinità o di affossarti per sempre nel giro di un'unica decisiva esibizione. E così sarà anche per Andrew/Teller che, dopo svariate peripezie, arriverà al concerto più importante della sua vita senza sapere che, in realtà, è una trappola: la sua carriera, ancora prima di cominciare, è già finita. Ma non mi spingo oltre a raccontare...
Insomma, considerato che i film a tema musicale sono sempre un terreno pericoloso (vedi "Radio America" di Altman), mi ero avvicinato a questa pellicola con qualche riserva, pur restando curioso di scoprire davanti a cosa mi sarei trovato. Di fatto "Whiplash" è un film energico e solido, una storia di amore per la musica che testimonia la fondamentale forza di volontà che è necessaria per raggiungere i propri obiettivi nella vita. Il professore antipatico e vessante, manesco e irascibile è uno step obbligato e difficile da digerire, eppure non si riesce a distogliere mai lo sguardo da questa storia, raccontata in maniera così particolare grazie all'ausilio di un montaggio a tempo di musica che è qualcosa di piacevolissimo da guardare. Insomma, tra tutti i film candidati agli Oscar di quest'anno, "Whiplash" è sicuramente uno di quelli che mi è piaciuto di più.
Ps. 3 Oscar vinti su 5 nomination: Miglior attore non protagonista (Simmons), montaggio e missaggio sonoro.
Box Office: $17.9 milioni
Consigli: Lo consiglio assolutamente e, francamente, non avrei problemi a rivederlo. Mia vera personale sorpresa della stagione - non mi aspettavo certo di rimanerne così colpito -, "Whiplash" è un prodotto energico che rimane immediatamente impresso, capace di lasciare non poco su cui ragionare allo spettatore. Nonostante una trama non certo complessa (del resto parliamo della vita di un adolescente tra gli alti e bassi del costruirsi una carriera), a mio avviso la trama è stata capace di centrare il suo obiettivo realizzando un ritratto plausibile di una scuola per giovani promesse musicali e relativi successi e insuccessi che la vita porta con sé. Chiaro che, subito dopo il jazz, l'elemento magnetico e più indelebile è certamente il personaggio di J.K. Simmons, meritatissimo destinatario di un'attenzione mondiale che meritava da tempo. Dunque guardatevi "Whiplash", lasciatevi malmenare dalla sua violenta presa di petto della vita: se ne esce malconci, ma soddisfatti.

Oscars 2015: Who's going to win?

Oscars 2015: le nomination

Dopo l'annuncio delle candidature da parte di Cheryl Boone Isaacs, J. J. Abrams, Alfonso Cuarón e Chris Pine, francamente, per un attimo sono rimasto di sasso.
Troppo ben abituato alla generale scopiazzatura tra un evento di questo genere e l'altro, avevo dato per scontato che cinquine dei Golden Globes e relativi vincitori sarebbero stati più o meno identici anche agli Oscar. Errore, grande errore.
Se, da un lato, la cosa mi ha sinceramente scioccato, devo dire che dall'altro apprezzo la scelta più indipendente, ovvero il piglio più genuino che gli Oscar dimostrano quantomeno nelle cinquine, evitando scivoloni un po' imbarazzanti determinati da un eccesso di categorie (quest'anno, i più evidenti ai Golden Globes erano nella categoria Attrice protagonista Musical o Commedia, con le candidature di Quvenzhané Wallis per "Annie" e Helen Mirren per "Amore, cucina e curry").
Tutto sommato quindi, superata l'iniziale diffidenza, devo dire che in generale posso capire le scelte. Meno nella categoria Miglior canzone originale, ma da questo punto di vista gli Academy Awards sono sempre stati meno commerciali dei Golden Globes. Forse, però, a Lana Del Rey una chance potevano darla.
In generale, comunque, qualche previsione confermata c'è stata: "Birdman" si porta a casa 9 candidature, "Boyhood" 6, "The Imitation Game" 8, "Theory of Everything" e "Foxcatcher" 5, "The Grand Budapest Hotel" 9. Le vere soprese sono state le solo due candidature di "Selma" (film e canzone), le 4 di "Mr. Turner" (vincitore a Cannes per Timothy Spall Miglior attore), 5 per "Interstellar" (tutte tecniche); le vere sorprese, però, sono soprattutto le 6 di "American Sniper" (0 ai Golden Globes) e le 5 di "Whiplash" (1 nomination con vittoria ai Golden Globes) entrambi candidati anche a Miglior film), ma anche le 3 di "Unbroken". Nelle categorie attoriali va detto che c'è stato un po' di rimpasto, qualche grande sopresa e decisamente molti nomi totalmente nuovi. Per quanto riguarda le sorprese, quelle in negativo sono l'assenza di Amy Adams per "Big Eyes" (vincitrice del Golden Globe), David Oyelowo per "Selma" (ma il fattore razzismo era già stato ampiamente celebrato l'anno scorso con le vittorie di "12 anni schiavo"), Jennifer Aniston per "Cake" (data per certa) e soprattutto Jake Gyllenhaal per "Nightcrawler" che certamente meritava una candidatura. In positivo, si aggiudicano - veramente a sorpresa - una candidatura Bradley Cooper per "American Sniper" (alla sua terza nomination in 3 anni), Marion Cotillard per "Deux jours, une nuit" (a spese della Adams) e per "Wild" Laura Dern (che non si aggiudicava una nomination dal 1992 e soprattutto il cui padre ha avuto una nomination l'anno scorso per "Nebraska").
Per quanto riguarda i volti nuovi degli Academy Awards, gli attori che hanno ricevuto oggi la loro prima nomination sono 4 su 5 per il Miglior attore protagonista (Michael Keaton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne e Steve Carell), Felicity Jones e Rosamund Pike per la Miglior attrice protagonista e per quanto riguarda i non protagonisti J.K. Simmons tra gli uomini, Patricia Arquette ed Emma Stone tra le donne. Un po' ridondanti, francamente, la settima candidatura di Robert Duvall per "The Judge" e la **esima di Meryl Streep per "Into the Woods" (per la precisione Meryl è a quota 19 candidature - record di sempre - di cui l'ultima l'anno scorso e 3 premi vinti).
Piacevoli sorprese sono state certamente il meritato riconoscimento (finalmente!) a Wes Anderson alla regia e la doppia candidatura nella categoria Miglior colonna sonora per il bravissimo Alexandre Desplat, arrivato a 8 candidature e 0 vittorie (anche se neppure questo sembrerebbe essere l'anno buono se si guarda ai Golden Globes).

In fine, una particolare menzione per i redivivi o, in questo particolare caso, i redidivi, star dimenticate che hanno ribaltato la loro situazione di stella in ombra grazie a una grande stagione quest'anno culminata proprio con la nomination di oggi: la già citata Laura Dern (ultima nomination 1992), Michael Keaton (mai avuta una candidatura in 30 anni di carriera), Patricia Arquette (0 nomination in quasi 30 anni di carriera), Edward Norton (che non vede una nomination dal '99), Alejandro González Iñárritu (che a parte 2 candidature nel 2007 non si è visto riconoscere nient'altro) e soprattutto Julianne Moore che dopo un exploit di 4 nomination, di cui ben 2 nel 2003, è stata da lì in poi ignorata.
Insomma, l'Academy quest'anno è riuscita a ribadire la propria supremazia in fatto di premi cinematografici ribaltando certe sicurezze che parevano garantite da altri contesti e promettendo un'edizione certamente interessante. Chi porterà a casa più statuette, quale sarà il miglior film dell'anno, ce la farà Richard Linklater a trionfare alla regia (fatti fuori Fincher e Nolan dalla cinquina della regia...)?
Le risposte definitive domenica 22 febbraio quando Neil Patrick Harris presenterà l'ottantasettesima edizione degli Oscar! Nel frattempo, naturalmente, tutte le categorie e i candidati di quest'anno. And the Oscar goes to...

The 87th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), is scheduled to take place on February 22, 2015, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. The Academy gave Academy Honorary Awards to Jean-Claude Carrière, Hayao Miyazaki and Maureen O’Hara and a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to Harry Belafonte in November 2014.
Actor Neil Patrick Harris is scheduled to host the ceremony for the first time.

BAFTA 2015: nomination e vincitori

Oggi era anche il giorno dell'annuncio delle candidature ufficiali ai BAFTA 2015, ovvero quelli che sono considerati gli Oscar britannici.

Giunti alla loro 68esima edizione, questi premi sono solitamente vicini agli Academy Awards anche per le cinquine principali come Miglior film, regia e attori, anche se di fatto tendono sempre ad essere più filobritannici, nonostante anche qui lo strapotere delle produzioni USA sia evidente. Ne è segno evidente che i BAFTA conferiscano premiazioni a parte per categorie specifiche come Miglior film britannico o Miglior debutto di un regista, sceneggiatore o produttore britannico. Insomma, la lingua è più o meno la stessa, ma anche l'orgoglio patrio vuole la sua parte.
La cerimonia di premiazione si terrà l'8 febbraio al Royal Opera House di Londra presentata anche quest'anno da Stephen Fry, alla sua decima esperienza di conduttore dell'evento.

Critics' Choice Awards 2015: nomination e vincitori

Pensavamo tutti che con i Golden Globe e le nomination sfornate neanche 7 giorni fa fosse finita? Beh, ci sbagliavamo di grosso.
Più che la stagione dei premi sembra la gara a chi arriva primo a snocciolare le sue cinquine, comunque tant'è, non ci possiamo fare nulla: i Critics' Choice Awards 2015 sono tra noi con una valanga di nuove nomination per decretare i migliori tra i migliori dell'anno (2014, ma anche 2015 visto che delle pellicole devono ancora uscire. E non parlo dell'Italia).

Nell'attesa, come ribadito più volte, delle nomination agli Oscar, in arrivo tra un mese, ci crogioliamo in questa baraonda da decreto assoluto, in questa schizofrenica necessità di sancire il migliore dell'anno. Lo sappiamo tutti che poi solo gli Academy Awards avranno un peso a livello di immagine e vendite, ma hey!, un premio in più non può mica farci male.
I vincitori saranno annunciati venerdì 16 gennaio 2015.
