Film 2326 - Gladiator II

Intro: Il sequel di cui non sapevo di avere bisogno? C'era un unico modo per scoprirlo...

Film 2326: "Gladiator II" (2024) di Ridley Scott

In sintesi: considerato che gli ultimi film di Ridley Scott non mi hanno esttamente entusiasmato, ammetto che non nutrissi grandi speranze per il sequel di "Gladiator". Forse anche grazie alle mie basse aspettative, devo dire che tutto sommato il film mi è piaciuto.
No, "Gladiator II" non è all'altezza del suo predecessore, ma questo non significa che non riesca comunque a veicolare la giusta dose di spettacolo e intrattenimento. Ci sono tante cose di questa pellicola che non funzionano, ma quelle che invece sono fatte a dovere aiutano a mitigare un risultato finale che, di fatto, per me è stato positivo.
Partiamo da quello che non va: Lucius Verus Aurelius (Paul Mescal) è uno strano protagonista. È carismatico e sicuramente ben interpretato da Mescal, ma a mio avviso a livello narrativo certe cose non tornano. La storia non ci mostra praticamente mai quali siano le sue dosi di guerriero se non all'inizio del film: noi spettatori sappiamo quello di cui è capace, ma gli altri protagonisti no. Eppure, una volta nell'arena del Colosseo, tutti gli altri gladiatori si affidano alla guida di Lucius senza battere ciglio. L'ho trovato un po' semplicistico.
Un'altra cosa che mi ha confuso del protagonista è il suo iniziale rifiuto a riconoscersi quale figlio di Lucilla (Connie Nielsen): inizialmente dice di non essere il bambino che abbiamo visto nel primo film, poi però improvvisamente cambia idea e fa pace con la madre. Niente di tutto quello che porta a questo cambiamento di atteggiamento viene spiegato dalla storia e, improvvisamente, Lucius e Lucilla sono madre e figlio come un tempo.
Stessa cosa dicasi per l'iniziale voglia di vendetta di Lucius nei confronti del generale Acacius (Pedro Pascal): prima lo vuole morto, poi improvvisamente si alleano e combattono insieme.
Il secondo grande problema che ho avuto con questa storia sono i 3 anatagonisti, ovvero i due imperatori pazzi Geta (Joseph Quinn) e Caracalla (Fred Hechinger) e, più avanti nel racconto, Macrinus (Denzel Washington). I primi sono totalmente inutili in termini narrativi dato che aggiungono poco e niente agli avvenimenti racconti; inoltre non mi è piaciuta la recitazione eccessiva e sopra le righe per cui i due attori (e il regista, mi immagino) hanno optato. Per quanto riguarda Macrinus, certe scelte recitative di Washington mi hanno lasciato un po' perplesso, ci sono una marea di pose e gesti estremamente teatrali che mi hanno distratto dalle varie scene in cui è presente l'attore.
Detto questo - lo so che sembrano una marea di critiche, ma sono solo cose che ho notato durante la visione - rimane il fatto che "Gladiator II" offre una buona dose di intrattenimento spettacolare, anche grazie a tutta una serie di scene di combattimento che sicuramente non mancano di impressionare. Mi rimane ancora il dubbio di come abbiano fatto i romani nel 200 AC a portare degli squali vivi fino al Colosseo, ma a un certo punto bisogna abbracciare quella sospensione dell'incredulità che ci consente di gustare storie di finzione come questa.
Aggiungo che ho trovato Paul Mescal adatto alla parte, nonché un buon protagonista in generale e mi fa piacere vedere il suo talento riconosciuto a livello internazionale in un blockbuster come questo. È stato piacevole anche ritrovare Connie Nielsen, un'attrice dall'inequivocabile fascino che, però, fatica a trovare maggiore spazio in quello che è il cinema mainstream moderno.
Nota finale per Ridley Scott che, a 87 anni compiuti, non smette di appassionare gli spettatori grazie ai suoi titoli cinematografici.

Vale o non vale: I fan dell'originale dovrebbero apprezzare. C'è meno coesione narrativa rispetto al primo film, ma il risultato finale è comunque godibile e gli effetti speciali aiutano a creare uno spettacolo cinematografico che intrattiene. Belli i costumi, ma la fotografia è un po' troppo "carica" (saturazione a gogo e spinta particolarmente marcata del nero, una caratteristica che ho riscontrato in altri lavori recenti di Scott, come "Prometheus", "Exodus: Gods and Kings", "Alien: Covenant", "All the Money in the World", "House of Gucci" e "Napoleon", tutti a firma del direttore della fotografia Dariusz Wolski).

In sintesi: il mio film preferito? Assolutamente no, però tutto sommato mi aspettavo molto di peggio, viste le critiche.
Ho trovato le performance delle due protagoniste Margaret Qualley e Geraldine Viswanathan piuttosto riuscite, si complimentano a vicenda. La storia di per sé è tutta un po' "troppo", però le ragazze riescono ad umanizzare un film che, altrimenti, finirebbe per mettere in scena solo macchiette.

Film 2107 - The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

Intro: Non sono particolarmente fan di Nicolas Cgae, ma il trailer di questo film mi aveva particolarmente incuriosito. Così sono corso al cinema appena ho potuto.

In sintesi: carino, piacevole e assolutamente diverso da come me lo aspettavo (come non mi aspettavo di trovarci la Mastronardi, a dire il vero...).
Geniale nel senso che coinvolge un attore un tempo di serie A di Hollywood e ne mette intelligentemente alla berlina aspetti di una carriera adesso certamente in declino (da anni) con, al tempo stesso, la complicità dello stesso attore.
Nicolas Cage qui è una forza della natura - finalmente coinvolto in un progetto che ne mette in risalto il talento e loda una filmografia di fatto di tutto rispetto -, felice di mettersi in gioco ed evidentemente in perfetta sintonia con il compagno di avventure Pedro Pascal, che ritroviamo in una chiave comica per lui inedita. Il duo è onestamente perfetto e vale da solo il prezzo del biglietto.
Per il resto "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent" è un'ottima commedia a tinte action che intrattiene piacevolmente, diverte e fa anche ridere di quando in quando. Sicuramente uno dei film più interessanti usciti fino ad ora quest'anno.

Film 1427 - Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Non vedevo l'ora di correre al cinema a vedere questo film e, appena ne ho avuto l'occasione, mi ci sono fiondato!

Pensieri: Due premesse: sono un fan del primo film e vedere questo sequel in inglese mi ha lasciato con una certa dose di incomprensione. Niente di preoccupante, ma di certo mi sono perso qualche battuta... Detto ciò, ho trovato "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" davvero godibile e per certi versi molto spettacolare, anche se i fasti del finale di "Secret Service" non si potevano superare.
Di fatto siamo davanti ad un buon secondo capitolo in linea con l'originale pur riuscendo a distaccarsene quanto basta; il che è ancora più ragguardevole se si pensa che buona parte degli elementi di questa pellicola rimandano direttamente o indirettamente alla storia precedente. La sovrapposizione non è forzata o spiacevole, per il cui il risultato è divertente e ben riuscito, il che non era per nulla scontato.
Ho trovato un po' drastico il gigantesco turnover di personaggi, forse un tantino eccessivo. E' vero che "Game of Thrones" ci insegna a non affezionarci mai a nessuno, ma in questo caso non credo fosse così indispensabile (spoiler) fare fuori quasi tutta la vecchia guardia. Poi è vero che una delle caratteristiche di "Kingsman" è la violenza all'ennesima potenza, in ogni caso sono rimasto un attimo spiazzato da questa drastica scelta di sceneggiatura. Superato lo shock, il nuovo apparato americano è sufficientemente godibile e yankee e supporta la nuova storia al pari della precedente e più sofisticata struttura inglese, con l'aggiunta di fucili, fruste, stivali da cowboy e cappelli da rodeo. In parte la scelta ha standardizzato lo scenario, andando a strizzare l'occhio al mercato USA, anche se la nuova ambientazione ha regalato ben 3 premi Oscar alla pellicola, arricchendola certamente di appeal anche dal punto di vista del patinato mondo di Hollywood, il che non guasta. In particolare devo dire che chi ha di più attirato la mia attenzione - a sorpresa! - è stata Halle Berry, un'attrice che considero sottotono da un bel po' e che qui, però, riesce a rubare la scena a tutti ogni volta che venga inquadrata.
In generale il film presenta una grande verve e vive di un giovane protagonista carismatico e perfettamente in parte, capace di risultare credibile sia in tuta sintetica e cappellino con visiera che in completo (pazzesco quello arancione!). L'alto tasso di adrenalina e scene acrobatiche rende il risultato finale godibile e certamente d'impatto, anche se devo dire che sono rimasto deluso dalla sconfitta del cattivo di turno e del relativo piano diabolico, questa volta troppo sottotono in modalità e rappresentazione. Avrei preferito qualcosa di più memorabile, diciamo.
Sicuramente molto provocatoria la scelta del punto di vista del presidente americano, estremo nel suo pensiero e messaggio politico quanto quello realmente attualmente in carica. Dubito la cosa sia casuale.
Comunque sono sicuro che rivedrò questo film, soprattutto per recuperare in italiano quelle battute che mi sono perso (maledetti accenti caratterizzanti!). In ogni caso "Kingsman 2" porta a casa un buon risultato che non fa rimpiangere l'originale e regala a chi lo aveva apprezzato una nuova avventura di grande intrattenimento e (incredibilmente violento e volgare) disimpegno. E ci piace così.

Consigli: Chi ha apprezzato il primo episodio non dovrebbe rimpiangerlo con questa seconda creatura del franchise (dovrebbe esserne in arrivo una terza). Va detto che, invece, chi non avesse apprezzato in origine, difficilmente troverà conforto o redenzione qui, considerato che toni e metodologie sono di fatto invariati. Non un prodotto per tutti, quindi, ma certamente un titolo divertente e spassoso per chi riesca ad andare oltre la natura sboccata, chiassosa e in definitiva un po' campy di questa ennesima saga.

Sinceramente ero molto curioso di vedere questo film, ma quando è uscito nelle sale non sono riuscito ad andarlo a vedere. Così appena lo streaming lo ha permesso, l'ho recuperato, ansioso di capire quanto potesse essere davvero disastroso.

Pensieri: Il film è una baggianata, anche se non così distante dalle tante altre boiate di successo che si sono alternate sul grande schermo negli anni. Non capisco, quindi, perché un così netto rifiuto del pubblico nei confronti di questo specifico prodotto, tra l'altro in linea con le promesse/premesse che genera. Forse l'unico aspetto veramente deludente sono gli effetti speciali.
Matt Damon devo dire che ultimamente lo trovo un tantino sotto tono, qui più volte messo in ombra dalla spalla Pedro Pascal. Forse non era il protagonista giusto.
Restando sugli aspetti negativi, ho trovato francamente ridicole le armature dell'esercito cinese. Più che soldati sembrano i Power Rangers: ci sono il blu, il rosso, il nero e il giallo a suddividere attraverso i colori le diverse mansioni di ogni gruppo dell'armata. Una scelta stilistica un po' infelice.
Molto scenografici, invece, i momenti musicali con i tamburi, belli da vedere e da ascoltare.
In ogni caso "The Great Wall" è il classico esempio di blockbuster facile facile che approda al cinema e fa sfaceli al box-office, pur in questa occasione al contrario di come ci si sarebbe aspettati. Né meglio né peggio di altri, semplicemente un prodotto molto commerciale altrettanto superficiale. Si poteva fare meglio.

Pensieri: Curioso di vedere questa pellicola col duo Matt Damon-Emily Blunt, ho aspettato ansioso che uscisse anche in Italia "The Adjustment Bureau" (titolo originale), film tratto da un racconto del solito Philip K. Dick e che, dal trailer, si dimostrava potenzialmente interessante.
Sulla tematica del libero arbitrio umano, di quanto influiscano certi eventi nella nostra vita, se possa o meno esistere qualcuno al di sopra di noi a 'guidarci' si è molto detto, scritto, e girato. Qui l'argomento - certamente intrigante - è trattato piacevolmente nella prima parte, con un certo tocco thriller che dona allo svolgimento una marcia in più (finché tutto rimane misterioso), ma poi si perde nel finale con virata mistica che declassa il risultato finale a sostanziale boiata.
Ammetto che, non avendo letto il racconto originale, non posso fare un vero e proprio confronto, ma posso certamente dire che, rispetto alle mie aspettative, "I guardiani del destino" sia stato deludente.
Critiche varie (e competenti), poi, hanno voluto la Blunt sottotono, rasente al minimo sindacale. Non posso certo supporre che aspirasse all'Oscar con questo ruolo, ma devo ammettere che non mi è parsa poi così fuori forma (ma i tempi de "Il diavolo veste Prada" sono lontani!).
In tutto questo, comunque, cio che più mi ha colpito è l'ostinazione caparbia di David Norris/Damon, capace di sfidare il soprannaturale pur di poter rimanere con la donna che ama. Amore come motore di una rivolta, unico appiglio per la restistenza e l'affermazione di sé stessi è, chiaramente, molto poetico (quasi eroico), ma, da cinico, non ho potuto fare a meno di chiedermi quanto concretamente - supponendo questa quale situazione reale - un individuo si metterebbe in pericolo solo per coronare il sogno di una storia appena sbocciata (ma proprio appena appena!). L'incertezza caratteristica di tale sentimento può essere effettivamente ignorata tanto da rendere il sentimento 'amore' unico motore di questa storia?
Suppongo che, nel racconto, un'incertezza di base nel suo protagonista sia resa con più efficacia. Qui, invece, stupisce un po' l'agire sicuro e senza indugi di David nonostante, come si diceva, la storia tra lui e Elise sia appena cominciata.
Una caratterizzazione un attimo più approfondita dei due personaggi avrebbe, forse, reso più giustizia ad una storia intrigante (sulla carta), ma sciupata in nome di effetti speciali e idee più facilmente commerciabili.
Consigli: Macchinoso e un po' banale nel finale, può essere giusto un intrattenimento senza pretese, più commerciale di quanto non si sperasse potesse essere.
