Film 1871 - Little Women

Intro: Ho aspettato mesi per vederlo, mi sono rifiutato di guardare una versione che non fosse quella in originale, essendo assolutamente elettrizzato all'idea di recuperare questo titolo (di cui praticamente chiunque aveva parlato benissimo, senza contare il grandioso successo al botteghino mondiale). Insomma, ero carico. E non a caso è stata la pellicola con cui abbiamo dato battesimo alla quarantena a casa della mia amica Claudia, con la quale ho scientemente deciso di condividere questo incarcerante capitolo dell'esistenza umana, all'epoca appena cominciato.

In sintesi: come sempre avevo gigantesche aspettative che si sono miseramente dovute scontrare con la realtà. La verità è che a questo punto forse sono io a non capire dove stia quella magia nei titoli di Greta Gerwig da cui tutti rimangono affascinati, comunque "Little Women" mi è sembrato un prodotto esteticamente bellissimo, molto glamour grazie a un cast stellare, recitato bene, ma di fatto niente di indimenticabile. Anzi, ad essere onesti l'ho trovato un po' difficile da seguire, con i vari flashback non dichiarati a rendere la trama ancora più oscura.
Rispetto a quest'ultima affermazione, una precisazione: non ho mai letto "Piccole donne", né visto una pellicola precedentemente realizzata che fosse tratta dal romanzo di Louisa May Alcott, per cui ero vergine rispetto all'argomento. E ho trovato questo film particolarmente contorto a livello temporale, con una narrazione ballerina che non ha aiutato a chiarirmi le idee.
Per cui sì, si tratta di un bel film in costume tecnicamente ineccepibile, però in generale non sono riuscito a farmi trascinare dalla storia delle quattro sorelle March, tanto simile per molti aspetti a quella delle quattro sorelle Bennet. Probabilmente avrei dovuto scegliere un altro prodotto che mi facesse da battesimo sulla questione - o magari leggere la stessa fonte di ispirazione... -, in ogni caso ho faticato a rimanere impressionato. Tra l'altro mi è mancato un po' di backup rispetto alla storia d'amore tra Jo (Ronan) e Laurie (Chalamet) che viene dichiarata dalla sceneggiatura stessa quale una potentissima e struggente love story dalle tempistiche sfortunate, ma di fatto è mostrata in maniera molto blanda rispetto ai sentimenti che vengono esplicitati dai due personaggi che, all'improvviso, si inalberano e discutono per quello che provano, ma di fatto fino ad allora la sensazione è che si tratti più di una fraterna amicizia che altro.
Per quanto riguarda il cast, Saoirse Ronan è sempre bravissima e sono rimasto davvero sorpreso dalla perfetta performance di Florence Pugh onestamente, anche se mi è parso che di quando in quando l'accento "american" di Emma Watson variasse o sparisse del tutto; Meryl Streep ormai pare faccia sempre un po' le stesse cose, per cui la sua presenza non mi ha particolarmente svoltato la visione. Sorpreso in positivo, invece, da Louis Garrel che infila una presenza hollywoodiana di tutto rispetto e ritorna sui radar del pubblico mainstream dopo una latitanza fin troppo prolungata.
Insomma, "Little Women" non è stato niente di quello che avrei voluto - amori struggenti scritti dal destino -, ma non si può assolutamente dire si tratti di un brutto film. Probabilmente gli amanti del romanzo, sapendo cosa aspettarsi, avranno gioito più di quanto non lo abbia fatto io.

Vale o non vale: Anche se non sono rimasto impressionato dall'ingresso nella mia vita della famiglia March, non si può dire che il lavoro fatto qui non sia degno di valore. C'è una fortissima impronta femminista che pervade tutta l'operazione, nonché un inno all'indipendenza che vale la pena di valorizzare. Ho trovato un filino snervante la querelle amorosa della protagonista e la conseguente risoluzione sentimentale, ma si tratta di miei gusti personali (altra epoca, altra storia). Onestamente non lo rivedrei, ma una chance gliela si può dare.
Premi: Candidato a 6 Oscar - Miglior film, attrice protagonista (Ronan) e non protagonista (Pugh), sceneggiatura non originale e colonna sonora, il film ha vinto per i Migliori costumi, categoria in cui ha trionfato anche ai BAFTA (su 5 nomination, le stesse degli Academy Awards tranne la menzione tra le migliori pellicole); 2 nomination ai Golden Globe (attrice protagonista e colonna sonora).
