In sintesi: la Pixar si addentra in tematiche sempre più complesse decidendo, questa volta, di raccontare una storia che ruota tutta attorno al concetto di morte e aldilà. Idea non facile di base, è ancora più interessante che a portare questo film alla luce sia una casa di produzione di pellicole d'animazione. Anche se, probabilmente, buona parte del motivo per cui "Soul" effettivamente funziona risiede proprio in questo elemento chiave che, facendosi scudo tramite l'implicazione giocosa e quasi ludica del cartone animato, riesce a trattare tematiche complesse senza rischiare di cadere nella banalità o in una eccessiva drammaticità. Però diciamocelo fin da subito: "Soul" non è necessariamente un film per bambini, quanto più probabilmente un prodotto per un pubblico più adulto. Proprio come lo è stato "Inside Out".
Dopo l'esplorazione emotiva di qualche anno fa - curiosamente la protagonista di "Inside Out" è Amy Poehler, amica e spesso collega della protagonista femminile di questa pellicola, Tina Fey, mentre Pete Docter è il regista di entrambe le pellicole - Pixar decide di rincarare la dose ed esplorare in maniera colorata e con un notevole spirito di avventura il (classico e molto) complesso tema del cosa ci possa essere dopo la morte e cosa accada alle anime di coloro che abbiano lasciato il mondo terreno. Chapeau per coraggio e intraprendenza.
Gli escamotage narrativi utilizzati dalla storia per giustificare e contestualizzare un mondo così distante e impensabile dalla concreta realtà cui siamo abituati sono assolutamente ben architettati e va menzionato lo sforzo della sceneggiatura di dare spazio a tutta una serie di tematiche legate all'esistenza umana in generale (senso della vita, traguardi da raggiungere, importanza di seguire i propri sogni, solitudine, passato e connessione con le proprie radici) che arricchiscono il racconto di più strati narrativi significativi. A livello estetico - ma qui nessuna sorpresa - il film è solidamente costruito e particolarmente piacevole.
Detto questo, come sempre, un vago senso di insoddisfazione personale va ricondotto al plebiscito mediatico rispetto alla qualità di questa pellicola che, dopo essermi stata "venduta" come l'ennesimo nuovo capolavoro Pixar, ha in parte gonfiato le mie aspettative nei confronti di questo titolo. Che, per carità, è stato assolutamente godibile - specialmente se pensiamo a cosa sia stato reso disponibile in questo periodo di pandemia ("Wonder Woman 1984" e "Mulan" due grandi delusioni) - ma forse meno rivoluzionario o innovativo di quanto mi sarei aspettato. O forse mi sono semplicemente un po' stufato di Hollywood?

Vale o non vale: Piacevole diversivo d'animazione che, mascherato da titolo per tutta la famiglia, non manca di affrontare tematiche adulte e profonde. Rimane sufficientemente spensierato da non risultare pesante, anche se sarà impossibile evitare qualche riflessione personale sull'aldilà una volta terminata la visione.
Premi: Candidato a 3 Oscar e 3 BAFTA per Miglior film d'animazione, sonoro e colonna sonora. Vincitore di 2 Golden Globe per Miglior film d'animazione e colonna sonora.

Oscars 2021: nomination e vincitori

Le nomination sono finalmente arrivate e sì, Laura Pausini ce l'ha fatta: è ufficialmente nominata all'Oscar per la Miglior canzone. Sono ancora abbastanza scioccato dalla notizia, ma fa comunque piacere riconoscere qualche nome italiano tra i nominati ("Pinocchio" di Garrone ha ricevuto due nomination).
Per il resto le cose sono andate abbastanza secondo programma e, finalmente, pare esserci uno spiraglio dal punto di vista dell'inclusività su molteplici fronti (etnico e di genere in primis). Alcuni elementi da menzionare: la categoria Miglior sonoro, fino all'anno scorso divisa in due sub-categorie (montaggio e mixaggio), da questa edizione è stata incorporata in un unico gruppo; Viola Davis è l'attrice di colore che ha ottenuto più nomination nella storia degli Academy Awards grazie a questa quarta candidatura per il film Netflix "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom"; per la prima volta due donne sono candidate nella categoria Miglior regia (Chloé Zhao e Emerald Fennell); come già sappiamo, Laura Pausini è nominata per "Io Si (Seen)", canzone portante del film "La vita davanti a sé" di Edoardo Ponti. La Pausini condivide la nomination con Diane Warren che, al momento, ha collezzionato 12 candidature e nessuna vittoria (questo dovrebbe essere l'anno buono); e a proposito di una valanga di nomination e ancora (vergognosamente) 0 statuette, Glenn Close è candidata come Miglior attrice non protagonista per "Hillbilly Elegy" stesso ruolo per cui, curiosamente è candidata anche ad un Razzie Award come Peggior attrice non protagonista. Vedremo cosa succederà il 25 aprile quando si terrà la cerimonia, anche quest'anno senza un presentatore.
