In sintesi: non conoscevo questo film e sicuramente anche se fosse stato il contrario non credo mi sarei preso la briga di recuperarlo. Detto questo, per quanto "The Sisters Brothers" non mi abbia cambiato l'esistenza, non è un prodtto malvagio.
Lento nella prima parte, la storia prende finalmente il via quando i 4 protagonisti - John C. Reilly, Joaquin Phoenix, Jake Gyllenhaal e Riz Ahmed - si ritrovano assieme alla ricerca dell'oro e devo ammettere che la dinamica di gruppo è davvero ben sviluppata, tanto da conferire alla narrazione nuovo interesse. Il momento, però, dura poco.
In ogni caso il risultato finale non è male, anche se il western rimane un genere che, pur non dispiacendomi, trovo talvolta faticoso. Qui a salvare "The Sisters Brothers" sono i due bravissimi protagonisti Reilly e Phoenix, una strana coppia che funziona e regala una solida performance. Detto questo, non lo rivedrei.

Vale o non vale: Un po' lento specialmente nella prima parte, "The Sisters Brothers" è un western moderno che vive della performance dei due protagonisti principali e della dinamica ben sviluppata tra di loro. A volte si fatica un po' a capire dove il film intenda andare a parare, in ogni caso il risultato finale non è malvagio. Semplicemente non troppo il mio genere. Poi sono sicuro che i fan del genere wester troveranno in questa pellicola valide ragioni per una visione soddisfacente.
Premi: In concorso a Venezia 2018, Jacques Audiard ha vinto il Leone d'Argento per la Miglior regia. Ai César 2019 il film ha ricevuto 9 candidature (tra cui Migliro film e sceneggiatura non originale) e ha vinto 4 premi per Miglior regia, fotografia, scenografia e sonoro.

Oscars 2021: nomination e vincitori

Le nomination sono finalmente arrivate e sì, Laura Pausini ce l'ha fatta: è ufficialmente nominata all'Oscar per la Miglior canzone. Sono ancora abbastanza scioccato dalla notizia, ma fa comunque piacere riconoscere qualche nome italiano tra i nominati ("Pinocchio" di Garrone ha ricevuto due nomination).
Per il resto le cose sono andate abbastanza secondo programma e, finalmente, pare esserci uno spiraglio dal punto di vista dell'inclusività su molteplici fronti (etnico e di genere in primis). Alcuni elementi da menzionare: la categoria Miglior sonoro, fino all'anno scorso divisa in due sub-categorie (montaggio e mixaggio), da questa edizione è stata incorporata in un unico gruppo; Viola Davis è l'attrice di colore che ha ottenuto più nomination nella storia degli Academy Awards grazie a questa quarta candidatura per il film Netflix "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom"; per la prima volta due donne sono candidate nella categoria Miglior regia (Chloé Zhao e Emerald Fennell); come già sappiamo, Laura Pausini è nominata per "Io Si (Seen)", canzone portante del film "La vita davanti a sé" di Edoardo Ponti. La Pausini condivide la nomination con Diane Warren che, al momento, ha collezzionato 12 candidature e nessuna vittoria (questo dovrebbe essere l'anno buono); e a proposito di una valanga di nomination e ancora (vergognosamente) 0 statuette, Glenn Close è candidata come Miglior attrice non protagonista per "Hillbilly Elegy" stesso ruolo per cui, curiosamente è candidata anche ad un Razzie Award come Peggior attrice non protagonista. Vedremo cosa succederà il 25 aprile quando si terrà la cerimonia, anche quest'anno senza un presentatore.

BAFTAs 2021: nomination e vincitori

Annunciate meno di 12 ore fa, le candidature per i BAFTA di quest'anno sono finalmente disponibili.
Dopo le deludenti e a tratti ridicole nomination - ma anche vittorie - di pochi giorni fa ai Golden Globes (criticati dalle stesse presentatrici Tina Fey e Amy Poehler), in questo caso le candidature sembrano decisamente più serie e, miracolosamente, per una volta piuttosto inclusive (anche se sono rimasto un po' deluso dalla mancata nomination di Carey Mulligan per "Promising Young Woman" che è candidato in 6 categorie tra cui Miglior film, ma non per l'interpretazione che tiene insieme e dà un senso a tutto il progetto... mah).
La cerimonia si terrà l'11 aprile.

SAG Awards 2021: nomination e vincitori

A esattamente 24 ore dalla pubblicazione delle nomination dei Golden Globes 2021, vengono rivelate anche le candidature per i SAG Awards di quest'anno, premi conferiti dal sindacato attori americano alle migliori performance attoriali dell'anno. 

Come sempre, c'è una buona dose di copia-incolla come regola generale in tutte le categorie, anche se vanno menzionate qui alcune eccezioni: la presenza (non prepotente) di "Bridgerton", la candidatura di Michaela Coel per "I May Destroy You" (serie completamente snobbata dai GG), le ottime 3 nomination di "Minari" (ai GG candidato nella categoria film straniero, pur essendo una produzione americana) e "Da 5 Bloods" (nessuna nomination ai GG) e l'assenza di "Emily in Paris" e quel nonsense di "Ratched".

La cerimonia di premiazione si terrà il 4 aprile prossimo.

Golden Globes 2021: nomination e vincitori

La stagione dei premi è finalmente iniziata e con ampissimo ritardo a causa del Covid-19.

Mi sento di commentare brevemente quanto segue:

1. non credo ci fosse bisogno di candidare prodotti mediocri come "The Prom", "Ratched", "Emily in Paris" e, francamente, quella paraculata di "The Trial of the Chicago 7" (che tra quelli citati qui è sicuramente il titolo più riuscito, ma non mi pare proprio che ci sia del genio creativo dietro a questo prodotto);

2. tre e dico TRE donne candidate alla regia: F I N A L M E N T E. L'unica donna a vincere il Golden Globe alla regia è stata Barbra Streisand con "Yentl". Era il 1984;

3. grazie alla canzone "Is Si (Seen)" candata in tutte le lingue del Signore, Laura Pausini diventa ufficialmente una candidata (c'è chi direbbe miracolata) al Golden Globe. La traccia fa parte della colonna sonora del film "La vita davanti a sé" ("The Life Ahead") di Edoardo Ponti (un altro miracolato). 

Anche da Dublino e sempre: evviva l'Emilia-Romagna!

La cerimonia si terrà il 28 febbraio e sarà presentata in streaming da Tina Fey e Amy Poehler per la quarta volta insieme, per la prima da due location diverse (rispettivamente New York e Los Angeles).

Film 1688 - Venom

Intro: Tutti ne parlavano, tutti andavano a vederlo: non ce lo siamo lasciati scappare neanche noi. Anche perché andare al cinema era la nostra attività preferita durante l'unico giorno libero del lunedì.

In sintesi: ai critici non sarà piaciuto per niente, ma di sicuro il pubblico ha gradito. Poi no, il risultato finale di questo primo titolo su Eddie Brock non è risultato il solito capolavoro Marvel - che qui condivide gli sforzi insieme a Sony e Columbia -, ma devo dire che mi aspettassi decisamente di peggio. Davvero da quello che avevo letto sembrava ci si dovesse preparare a un disastro su tutti i fronti, mentre "Venom" è una chiassosissima pellicola ripiena di effetti speciali e di twist della trama non particolarmente ispirati, eppure nel complesso il risultato finale è ok, certamente di intrattenimento quanto basta per portare la gente al cinema.
Non ci vedo niente di male nel portare al pubblico quel mix di cazzeggio e cazzata, specialmente quando si ha alla mano un protagonista così evidentemente diviso tra un'umanità e una disumanità tanto agli antipodi: Eddie muta per caso, non vuole e non sa come combattere il se stesso malvagio; Venom prende il sopravvento e fornisce una soluzione estrema e violentissima ai problemi del corpo di cui si è impadronito. Insomma, si poteva forse cercare di lanciarsi un tantino di più sull'introspezione e meno sull'esplosione, ma rimane il fatto che esistono pellicole ben più confuse o mal riuscite. Senza contare che si tratta di una combo Sony + Marvel i cui precedenti "The Amazing Spider-Man" 1 e 2 sono risultati in due gigantesche boiate. Insomma, secondo me si poteva fare molto, molto di peggio.

We need to talk about Venom

Even though it had a better than expected box-office first week ("Venom" was initially projected to gross $60–70 million, but it went on to gross $80.3 million, marking the best October opening weekend of all-time, as well as the seventh best opening for a Sony film), Tom Hardy's new antihero Eddie Brock struggled to find critics consensus.
With an approval rating of 30% based on 258 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, a weighted average score of 35 out of 100 on Metacritic and an average grade of "B+" on an A+ to F scale on CinemaScore, the movie didn't exactly topped fans and critics expectations. With some reviews describing it as "worthless", "aggressively loud and stupid without being much fun at all" or even "chaotic, noisy, and in desperate need of a stronger attachment to Spider-Man", "Venom" has apparently failed to impress its crowd, yet still managing to make strong business: with a worldwide gross of $466.5 million the movie was able to surpass the $450 million gross it needed to break even (Deadline Hollywood estimates).

E siamo giunti al periodo dell'anno in cui la tv si riprende il suo spazio: appena rivelate le candidature ai prossimi Emmy Awards, che si terranno domenica 17 settembre (proprio quando me ne partirò per l'Australia mannaggia!) e saranno presentati da Stephen Colbert.

Television Academy Chairman and CEO Hayma Washington and celebrity presenters Anna Chlumsky and Shemar Moore announced the nominees for the 69th Emmy Awards on Thursday, July 13, 2017. Film 852 - Lo sciacallo - Nightcrawler

Ero molto curioso di vederlo, anche perché ero certo che sarebbe finito tra i possibili ad aggiudicarsi qualche nomination ai vari premi della stagione. Non mi sbagliavo...

Film 852: "Lo sciacallo - Nightcrawler" (2014) di Dan Gilroy

Pensieri: Sebbene sia stato felice di rivedere Jake Gyllenhaal e Rene Russo sul grande schermo e - finalmente! - con un titolo in grado di suscitare interesse e addirittura finire al #1 del box office americano (con il piuttosto modesto incasso del primo weekend di $10.4 milioni), non posso comunque dire che la cosa sia bastata a farmi piacere "Nightcrawler", primo esperimento registico dello sceneggiatore Dan Gilroy (sue le storie e sceneggiature di "The Fall", "Real Steel", "The Bourne Legacy").
La storia, inquietante e molto cruda, vede Gyllenhaal (per questo ruolo candidato ai Golden Globes 2015) interpretare Lou Bloom, un disoccupato disposto a tutto pur di lavorare che, per un caso fortuito viene in contatto con il mondo del giornalismo incentrato su servizi di cronaca nera. La disperazione di quest'ultimo, combinata al "desiderio di sangue" (da mostrare in tv) della direttrice del network televisivo per cui Lou finirà per lavorare saranno il motore di questo prodotto, più che film quasi esperimento sociologico.
Infatti la trama si spinge molto oltre e arriva a mostrare ciò che l'assenza di un limite - personale, etico, morale - può arrivare a creare: Lou diventerà, sì, un talentuoso venditore di sé stesso e pure di grande successo, ma a discapito dei molti che avranno la sfortuna di incontrarlo.
Nel concreto: vale più la vita dello sconosciuto o le immagini che lo ritraggono dopo la sciagura che gli è capitata? E, potendo evitargli il peggio, interverremmo?
Questi, ridotti all'osso, gli interrogativi che pone la trama de "Lo sciacallo - Nightcrawler" e, nonostante siano domande inquietantemente intriganti e la realizzazione della pellicola sia di fatto molto buona, rimane comunque la sensazione che a questo film manchi qualcosa, che sia solo un esercizio (antropologico) o un tentativo di stuzzicare il pubblico con una tematica molto forte. Dietro a quest'ultima, però, pare esserci poco altro, anche perché difficilmente lo spettatore si identificherà nel disturbato Lou o nella direttrice senza scrupoli - figuriamoci nell'ingenuo e sottomesso Rick (Riz Ahmed) -, quindi anche a livello di personaggi e pubblico rimane una certa distanza.
In definitiva, ribadendo che era ora che sia Gyllenhaal che Russo rivedessero la ribalta cinematografica, non posso comunque dire che questo film mi abbia convinto o mi sia piaciuto. Forse è troppo anche per me, forse gli manca qualcosa per essere meno disumano. Non lo rivedrei.
Box Office: $38.3 milioni
Consigli: Jake Gyllenhaal regala una buona interpretazione degna di nota, perde tantissimo peso quasi a significare che il poco rimasto in fatto di carne è lo stesso rimasto al personaggio Lou in fatto di morale. Chiariamoci, Louis Bloom è disturbato e concepisce le relazioni umane in modo rigoroso e molto personale, quindi è difficile poter farne un esempio da studiare. In combutta con Nina Romina, i due costituiranno la coppia della disperazione, entrambi alla ricerca di un modo per sopravvivere e sopravviversi, disposti a tutto pur di riuscire in ciò che fanno e vogliono fare. Sono inquietanti e umanamente disgustosi. La tv qui è loro complice o, meglio, lo è quanto il pubblico che guarda.
Voyerismo mosrboso, quindi, impatto dei media, assenza di morale e ridefinizione del limite personale, tutti aspetti che concorrono a formare la storia di questa pellicola e che, come si capisce, non sono fatti esattamente per ogni tipo di spettatore. Non è un film facile, quindi prima di sceglierlo è bene essere pronti. A cosa? A salire sul furgone di quello spostato di Lou Bloom.
