Film 2442 - The Day After Tomorrow

Intro: Possibly my fascination with disaster movies started with this one. I'm not sure how many times I've seen it, but quite a lot for sure.

Thoughts: I mean, it's definitely not a masterpiece and it doesn't pretend to be, so for what it is, it's quite fun. In a way, it was ahead of its time, strongly pushing the climate change narrative to the most extreme scenario imaginable. And yeah, of course it does it because it's convenient for the plot, but rewatching this movie 22 years later, it was quite impressive to see how much time is spent discussing the issue and in such strong terms. It's clear that, although not a political movie whatsoever, the leaders of the world (especially the American ones) are depicted here as shortsighted, stubborn, and not trustworthy. Rings a bell?
Anyway, I'll admit that this time around I enjoyed "The Day After Tomorrow" a little less than I anticipated. Not that I was ever a big fan, but Dennis Quaid's views on politics and life have kind of tainted whatever movie legacy he had (that I was aware of), so seeing him here had an impact on how I perceived the movie this time around. Also, I'll be honest, I didn't care too much for his character anyway.
I definitely cared about Jake Gyllenhaal's and Emmy Rossum's characters, though. I think they have great chemistry together, and their storyline in the library is definitely more compelling—at least to me.
All in all, I'm still a fan of "The Day After Tomorrow" and the disaster movie genre. They tried to replicate this formula many times with varying degrees of success, but this movie and "2012" (both by Roland Emmerich) are definitely my favourites.

Worth a watch?: I think it's good fun. Less fun nowadays, considering the climate situation around the world, but hey—this is a movie, a disaster movie specifically, and you know what to expect if you decide to watch it: everything gets destroyed and the world has to start over, possibly (hopefully) learning its lesson. It's a blockbuster movie with an environmental message.
Awards: The movie won 1 BAFTA Award for Best Special Visual Effects. Nominated for 2 MTV Movie & TV Awards for Best Breakthrough Performance (Emmy Rossum) and Best Action Sequence ("The destruction of Los Angeles"), it won the latter.
Key word: Ice age.

Film 2398 - Flow

Intro: I forgot to include this movie in my list of movies to review and I'm including it now!

Thoughts: The experience of watching this movie is a very interesting one for me.
Back in February, I decided to give it a go on a flight from Dublin to Lanzarote, Spain. I wanted something nice and easy to watch on the 4 hour Ryanair journey, something to keep me company, but also wouldn't require too much brain power. And because we were really, REALLY deep into Oscar season, it only made sense to watch one of the nominees. And, to be honest, it was the best decision.
One thing I have to say beforehand is that the journey to Spain was insane. Turblence would get so bad at moments that it would be impossible to hold my laptop on my lap. Considering my second most irrational fear is dying in a plane crash, it's fair to say that it wasn't a pleasant experience. But watching "Flow" definitely helped.
One thing I didn't expect is the complete lack of dialogue. No human interactions - although humans are definitely part of this world considering the amount of man-made items present - just a cat on his journey to... I'm still not sure.
It's a very fascinating movie, it feels kind of magical at times and the story just progresses at its own pace, while the sea level (I guess?) is rising and our cat protagonist is trying to escape it.
There are a lot of wonderful shots in this movie, a lot of creative vision and an aesthetic that is simple, yet extremely effective. All of this, wrapped in a soundtrack that absolutely complements the end result.
I didn't know what to expect when I started this journey - both the cat's from the movie and mine on the plane - but I sure did enjoy it.

Worth a watch?: Definitely. It's an interesting movie and story, well crafted - amid a fairly low budget of €3.5 million - and executed. The absence of dialogue forces you to carefully follow the story, you can't get distracted or you'll miss some detail of the story. It's unusual and it takes a second to get used to it, but it's also so calming at times to just listen to the wind or the sound of the surroundings. Not to mention that there is definitely a very contemporary message being carried by the story: climate change and its effects on the planet.
Awards: Nominated for 2 Oscars for Best International Feature Film and Best Animated Feature Film, it won the latter. 2 BAFTAs nominations (Best Animated Feature Film and Best Children's & Family Film) and 1 Golden Globe win for Best Motion Picture - Animated. The movie also won the César for Best Animated Film and was in competition for the Un Certain Regard Award at Cannes 2024.

In sintesi: ero incuriosito da "Reminiscence" fondamentalmente per due motivi, ovvero il fatto che non ne avessi mai sentito parlare prima e che tra i protagonisti ci fosse una delle mie favorite, Rebecca Ferguson (quest'anno, tra l'altro, in grande spolvero considerando la sua presenza nell'acclamato "Dune" di Villeneuve). Questo mi è bastato per decidere di vederlo.
Devo dire che - considerate le mie bassissime aspettative - il film di Lisa Joy non sia così terribile, specialmente perché sostenuto da una storia che abbonda decisamente di idee e ambizioni estetiche. Che sono poi, al contempo, i due punti deboli di tutta l'operazione. Sia perché tutto l'hype creato inzialmente non viene sufficientemente ricompensato dallo svolgimento e finale, sia perché non si può campare di sola estetica, soprattutto quando ricordano tantissimo un prodotto di Nolan (qui principalmente "Inception"). La musiche di Ramin Djawadi (già conosciuto per "Westworld" e "Game of Thrones"), sono molto simili a quelle del suo conterraneo Hans Zimmer, il che non aiuta a contestualizzare questa pellicola in un ambito tutto suo.
Senza contare che abbiamo già visto Hugh Jackman portare in scena una spirale di ossessione e infelicità causata da qualche trucchetto magico e il legame dei ricordi in un altro film (sempre di Nolan): "The Prestige".
Insomma, con tutta la buona volontà del mondo, questo "Reminiscence" partiva decisamente svantaggiato. Non aiuta il fatto che il tutto manchi di un certo spessore, che sembri sempre di star assistendo alla messa in scena di un'ottima produzione tv, piuttosto che di una produzione cinematografica dal costo stimato tra i 54 e i 68 milioni di dollari; aggiungo che, stranamente, nonostante la durata non superi le due ore, ci sono talmente tanti eventi raccontati che la storia finisce per sembrare infinita.
Diciamoci, comunque, pure la verità: "Reminiscence" non sarà un capolavoro - è certamente disordinato e confuso in certe parti e troppo carito di elementi narrativi, tanto da non sapere che direzione prendere - ma abbiamo decisamente visto di peggio.

C'è molto della serie HBO "Westworld" in qusto "Reminiscence" (che poi è finito in streaming su HBO Max): Lisa Joy e suo marito Jonathan Nolan (entrambi coinvolti in regia, sceneggiatura, produzione esecutiva nella serie), Thandiwe Newton e Angela Sarafyan (entrambe attrici) e Ramin Djawadi (compositore).

Vale o non vale: Francamente non sarei stato felice di aver speso dei soldi per vedere questo film, ma se avete occasione di recuperarlo via streaming... perché no? Hugh Jackman è sempre un attore di alto livello e Rebecca Ferguson non delude in questo ruolo sexy con un tocco di dipendenza. Senza contare che Thandiwe Newton ruba spesso la scena.
