Thoughts: Possibly my least favourite film I've seen recently. I'm sure "I Saw the TV Glow" has its fans out there, but this is definitely not my cup of tea.
My main issue with this movie is its pace, and a little bit the outlandish plot (especially towards the end).
Specifically, it's evident from the get-go that the screenplay is in no rush to let you know what's going on: the pace is slow, the dialogue is minimal, the soundtrack takes the lead, things happen and yet it feels like nothing is going on. I would describe it as one of those stories where vibes and aesthetic vision take over the plot to deliver a product that is more in the range of a long music video or something that would be shown at an art gallery as a visual piece from an artist. That's how I felt watching it — together with frustration.
Yes, frustration, because "I Saw the TV Glow" was sold to me as an indie masterpiece and a psychological horror drama, so my expectations were high and connected to a specific movie genre. So I was definitely disappointed when a) I wasn't particularly taken by the story while watching it and b) I realized there was no conventional horror element in the story whatsoever. And it definitely didn't help that Jake and I were making fun of some bits of the story while watching it: the amount of time they repeat "The Pink Opaque" in the fucking dialogues is insane and drove me crazy.
All in all, this movie wasn't what I expected it to be (and probably needed to see that evening, if I'm being honest) and ended up not enjoying it at all. Justice Smith and Jack Haven's performances are good but didn't blow me away, while Jane Schoenbrun's artistic vision is clear and consistent throughout the whole story, but it's so prominent that it ends up outshining the script. They have a new movie coming out soon that looks promising ("Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma" with none other than Gillian Anderson and Hannah Einbinder) and I'm probably gonna watch it, but I'm afraid I'll end up feeling the same way I felt watching this film: having bought into the promising trailer and enthusiastic reviews only to find it didn't live up to the hype.
P.S. I don't want to deadname anyone, but for the sake of clarity, I just want to point out that Jack Haven here is credited as Brigette Lundy-Paine.

Worth a watch?: The obsession for a TV show pushes two high school friends to question their reality when the show starts to feel more real than their own lives at times. This idea is quite intriguing and I was curious to see where the screenplay would have led this story, but I have to admit that I really struggled to stay focused the more the plot developed and progressed.
It's a very slow-paced film that relies heavily on aesthetics and vibes: if this is what you're looking for in a film, go for it, I'm sure you'll have a great time. For those who enjoy a more structured and dialogue-heavy story, this might not be your cup of tea.

Film 2439 - Now You See Me: Now You Don't

Intro: I always liked this franchise, especially the first movie, which I think I rewatched quite a lot back in the day. The second one wasn't as good, to be fair, but hey, I was still willing to give this third outing a go. It's just that I forgot to go to the movies before it was removed from the cinema's schedule...

Thoughts: People are sh*tting on this movie a lot, but I found it to be exactly what I needed in that moment: good, lighthearted fun.
Yeah, it's not a masterpiece, but was it ever meant to be one? Not really. So I don't understand why "Now You See Me: Now You Don't" was somehow expected to be better or something that it isn’t, especially considering how the second one compared to the original. Let fun entertainment be just fun entertainment.
It's nice to see all the actors from the two previous films (but Mark Ruffalo, Michael Caine, and Daniel Radcliffe) coming back for this one, especially considering they came out in 2013 and 2016. A new addition to the big group of A-listers is Rosamund Pike playing the bad guy this time around. She's amazing in everything she does, so I'm super happy to see her joining a successful franchise. All in all, a great ensemble cast. At times, the dynamics between the different characters and the overall vibe of the movie(s) reminded me of the "Ocean's" trilogy.

Film 2189 - Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves

Intro: Non che abbia mai giocato al gioco da cui è tratto, però ero super curioso di vedere questo film perché dal trailer non sembrava niente male!

In sintesi: in tutto questo marasma di blockbuster a ripetizione senza arte né parte, devo dire che "Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves" è stato la boccata d'aria fresca che non mi aspettavo. Visto il trailer diciamo che ci speravo, ma sicuramente un buon risultato finale non era per nulla scontato.
Invece, il quarto film tratto dal famoso gioco di ruolo è spassoso e divertente, favorito da un cast di ottimi attori capitanati dalla strana coppia Chris Pine + Michelle Rodriguez che, insieme, funzionano alla grande. Se poi ci aggiungiamo uno Hugh Grant che fa Hugh Grant che fa il cattivo della situazione... il film funziona alla grande!
La storia è avventurosa quanto basta e, per quanto non totalmente innovativa per il genere, sicuramente riesce a incapsulare bene ogni elemento potenzialmente già visto nel contesto (magico) specifico a questo franchise. Tra le scene che ho apprezzato di più, il labirinto (tra "Harry Potter" e "Il galdiatore") e quella in cui i protagonisti mettono a segno il piano per entrare nel caveau.
Il risultato finale è davvero ben riuscito, la storia ha un ottimo ritmo e il film riesce a bilanciare bene i momenti comici (particolarmente divertenti) e quelli più prettamente da blockbuster (leggi effetti speciali a gogo). Onestamente "Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves" è stata una visione inaspettatamente piacevole che ha superato apiamente le mie aspettative. E, ultimamente, questo non capita spesso.

Non guasta, poi, che il cast sia particolarmente azzeccato!

Film 1769 - Pokémon Detective Pikachu

Intro: Ricordo perfettamente di averlo visto due anni fa ad Auckland allo spettacolo del mattino del multisala in centro. Mi sentivo come quando facevo fuga da scuola, solo che all'epoca il matinée non esisteva.

In sintesi: cosa aspettarsi dall'ennesimo film sui Pokemon, questa volta però in live-action se non potenzialmente una giga boiata? Beh, fermi tutti: "Pokémon Detective Pikachu" è una boiata molto simpatica e divertente, tanto che mi sento di dire che il film non è niente male! Chi l'avrebbe mai detto? Del resto, parliamoci chiaro, fosse stato un progetto meno ambizioso, dubito che Ryan Reynolds sarebbe saltato a bordo. E dico ambizioso perché risollevare la qualità dei prodotti cinematografici legati al franchise dei Pokémon non era cosa da poco; incassarci, poi, una montagna di soldi è stata l'impresa che io personalmente non mi aspettavo (ovviamente il sequel è già in cantiere).
Insomma, questo Detective Pikachu funziona principalmente grazie ad un Reynolds che ripropone il modello alla "Deadpool" - qui ripulito per il pubblico giovane - e si mette in gioco prestando la voce al leggendario peloso Pokémon giallo facendo centro. Poi, per carità, il film di per sé non è certo un capolavoro assoluto, eppure tutto sommato è un'avventura divertente con sufficienti dosi di mistero, azione e coloratissimo divertimento da lasciare soddisfatti. E non si può fare a meno di tornare un po' ragazzini...

Vale o non vale: Simpatica avventura per tutta la famiglia che porta in campo alcuni di Pokémon più famosi e li propone in una computer animation che incrocia il cartone animato alla realtà (per capirci: si capisce che sono finti, ma l'effetto è reale a sufficienza da render il tutto plausibile). Non serve essere amanti del franchise per apprezzare, basta non avere troppe pretese e lasciarsi trasportare da un film che, tutto sommato, è spassoso quanto basta.

Film 1039 - Città di carta

Molto, molto interessato a vedere questo film, ho dovuto recuperarlo in streaming dato che lo avevo perso al cinema.

Pensieri: "Colpa delle stelle" è stato bello, ma molto duro da digerire. "Città di carta" è tutta un'altra storia che, lo ammetto, mi è piaciuta.
Anche questa pellicola tratta dal romanzo di John Green, la mia paura è che potesse verificarsi una sorta di operazione fotocopia grazie al successo dell'anno scorso della storia con Shailene Woodley anche considerata la presenza di Nat Wolff in entrambi i film, l'idea young adults-glam che si respira in entrambi i casi e, naturalmente, per via dell'autore in comune. La realtà è che sono due titoli completamente diversi e a parte le piccole connessioni di cui prima, il risultato è diverso e piacevole in entrambi i casi.
Innanzitutto in "Paper Towns" nessuno è malato o muore, semplicemente la protagonista Margo (Cara Delevingne) ad un certo punto sparisce e il povero Quentin (Wolff), innamorato di lei fin da bambino, finirà per andare a cercarla dopo aver trovato una serie di indizi che ritiene lo condurranno da lei. Il fulcro della vicenda è quindi la ricerca di Margo che di fatto segue l'avventura di una notte che cambierà la vita dei due ragazzi: lei perché, dopo essersi vendicata dei suoi amici e del suo ex fidanzato fedifrago, sparirà nel nulla; lui perché finalmente si concede di vivere un po'. Il risultato finale sarà una raccolta di indizi e un viaggio on the road per Quentin e i suoi amici nerd che regalerà a tutti il ricordo di un'avventura indimenticabile prima di salutarsi in vista dell'università.
Un percorso di formazione, dunque, mascherato da spy story - molto alla leggera -, eppure pur non risultando totalmente efficace, "Città di carta" riesce a far appassionare il suo spettatore man mano che la storia evolve, proponendo non solo un'avventura anche divertente, ma dei personaggi piacevoli e simpatici, sufficientemente veri e onesti da risultare credibili. In questo Wolff dimostra certamente il suo valore, mentre la Delevingne ha una parte più maliziosa che, sì, le si addice, ma richiede inevitabilmente meno talento per essere rappresentata. Su di lei, dunque, mi riservo di vedere altro per capire se abbia davvero qualcosa da dire o sia il classico esempio di personalità famosa per un motivo che finisce a tentare altre strade più o meno artistiche fino a quando la fama regge. Vedremo.
In definitiva, comunque, "Paper Towns" è un buon esempio di cinema per - come vuole la catalogazione anglofona - giovani adulti e riesce nell'intento di mantenere le aspettative legate alla misteriosa figura di Margo. Il finale è decisamente più inaspettato del normale per un prodotto mirato a un tale target, il che mi ha sorpreso in positivo, soprattutto perché si muovono motivazioni sensate e ponderate legate alla ricerca di se stessi e l'affermazione della propria personalità in opposizione alle imposizioni sociali e alle precostituite categorie umane. Questo, pur semplificato all'interno della trama e probabilmente utilizzato quale strumento per elevare i toni della storia da semplice film per ragazzi a pellicola sufficientemente impegnata, rimane un punto a favore della storia che riconosce quanto sia importante capire prima chi si è per poter decidere quali scelte fare o percorsi seguire nella vita. Poi, certamente, il tutto rimane un'operazione commerciale mirata a creare una sorta di seguito alle fortune di "Colpa delle stelle", ma devo dire che tutto sommato la storia che racconta "Città di carta" non mi ha deluso.
Ps. Ma poi cosa sono queste città di carta del titolo? Errori volontari degli autori delle mappe, sotto forma di nomi di città inventati, che servono a tutelare dalla violazione di copyright delle stesse.

Consigli: Colonna sonora pazzesca che mi è entrata subito in testa, bella fotografia, un protagonista dal viso dolce e l'aspetto da peluche arruffato, una modella come ragazza scomparsa e un romanzo dallo stesso autore di "Colpa delle stelle": insomma, qualche elemento valido per vedere questa pellicola c'è sicuramente. Il risultato finale è buono, la storia si segue bene e volentieri e il finale è meno scontato di quanto non si potrebbe pensare. In una domenica pomeriggio di quasi inverno come questa, una chance a "Città di carta" si può tranquillamente dare.
