Intro: The second movie was coming out and I'd never seen (or heard of, to be honest) the first one, so, under Niamh's suggestion, I gave it a go.

Thoughts: A fun ride and a very inventive story, I quite enjoyed "Ready or Not".
I really didn't know what to expect and I wasn't sure I would enjoy this one, but I actually really did. I think Samara Weaving is great in the lead role and her physical chops are on full display here, proving to the audience that she not only can carry a whole movie on her shoulders, but that she's actually perfect for the genre and a movie star in the making. I've seen her in a bunch of things ("Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri", "Snake Eyes" and "Scream VI") but never as the lead, so this was really my introduction to her. And what an introduction! She's the star of the show, and deservedly so.
For the rest, "Ready or Not" lives on a simple premise - from the IMDb logline: "A bride's wedding night takes a sinister turn when her eccentric new in-laws force her to take part in a terrifying game." - and goes all in on the execution: a scary cat-and-mouse game, the fight for survival, and a potential curse that seems more like an urban legend than a real thing, until the ending shows the audience whether there was any truth to it.
It's not for the faint of heart, but I had a great time.

It stems from a simple idea, but it's great to witness how the plot never takes the easy route and actually takes the time to explore unexpected scenarios until the very end. If you like this kind of comedy horror film, "Ready or Not" - and even more so "Ready or Not 2: Here I Come" - is the cinematic experience for you. Awards: /

Film 2387 - Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning

Intro: I really wanted to see at the movies, but I almost missed it.

Thoughts: It's a good thing that we decided to rewatch the previous film, because I'm not sure I would have been able to follow the whole development of the plot otherwise.
As per the previous entry of this franchise, I feel like we're once again facing the issue of overstacking the story: there are a lot of plotlines, a lot of characters, a lot of stunts, to the point that it's hard to remember specifically what you just witnessed because so much happened. Don't get me wrong, this is another perfectly crafted movie, Tom Cruise proves one more time why he's perfect for the role and Christopher McQuarrie does another impressive job as a director and screenwriter. Still, "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" would be impossible to follow if you didn't watch the previous movie AND actually remember what happened there as well (there's a 2 year gap between "Dead Reckoning Part One" and "The Final Reckoning").
Overall, the 8th movie from this franchise is once again a really good one. I think the "Mission: Impossible" saga got better and better with time and although it peaked already, is still an engaging and entertaining ride.
This is supposed to be the final chapter of the story: do I believe it? Not for a second. It will be interesting to see if they reboot it in time for Tom Cruise to be still able to play Ethan Hunt.

But it's a really good action movie, I'm actually surprised it didn't make more money at the box-office this being the (alleged) final film of the franchise.

Thoughts: Of the 8 movies from this franchise, one of my 3 favourites.
This movie is 30 years old and still works marvelously: extremely entertaining, greatly shot, led my a perfect Tom Cruise and, most importantly, "Mission: Impossible" starts with one of the most shocking twists that you don't see coming.
Overall, a great cinematic experience.

Thoughts: I honestly really enjoy the "Mission: Impossible", I watched all the movies at least one, with the first one, "Rogue Nation" (#5) and "Fallout" (#6) being my favourite. That said, I think this saga has become so convoluted that it's hard to follow. And I mean this in the best way possible.
The whole "Mission: Impossible" franchise is entertaining and fun to watch, Tom Cruise is perfect for the role and the action scenes are jaw-dropping. Sequel number 5 and 6 being my favourites of this saga, it's obvious that I appreciate the work done by Christopher McQuarrie, so kudos to him. Still, I think with this one things have slightly gone a bit too overboard.
It's always nice to witness a well-written and thought-through story play out on the screen, but here there's so much going on it's really hard to keep track of things, especially knowing that this is only the first part of a bigger plot that started years ago. For the casual viewer it's just too much.
Don't get me wrong, "Dead Reckoning Part One" is really well-written and shot, the quality is obviously there. I'm just saying that, unless you're a massive fan of this franchise and you know every plot point by heart, it's hard to follow. To the point that your brain gives up and you just tag along for the ride until the movie ends and you forget about all you just witnessed. And I think this is partially the reason why this film wasn't as successful as the previous sequels, only managing to pass the $500 million mark ("Fallout" went over $700 million). That, and because splitting your last film in two parts a) is so 2010s, b) after the split sequel fatigue that defeated even the strongest franchises (I'm thinking of 'The Hunger Games' especially) this is a mistake that could have been avoided. Not necessarily by condensing the whole plot into one movie, but just by not marketing it as the same movie split in two parts. All the previous "Mission: Impossible" films, although sequels, work well because they tackle one story at a time. In this decade, after all we've been through movie-wise, I'm not sure how many people are willing to commit to a story that won't wrap up for another few years.
I also think it's possible that this franchise got caught up in the James Bond renaissance, trying to go for longer character arcs and not just standalone movies in order to build a more dedicated fanbase.
Anyway, although the plot could have been a bit less thick, "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One" is still an impressive action movie, very well done and entertaining.

Worth a watch?: I enjoyed the watch as I enjoy watching almost every single one of the "Mission: Impossible" movies (#2 is my least favourite, to be honest). Yeah, you really need to pay attention and follow what's going on, possibly remembering it for the next and final movie of the franchise, but even if you don't do it, it's still a pretty fun ride.
Awards: 2 nominations at both the Oscars and BAFTAs for Best Sound and Best Visual Effects. 1 nomination at the Golden Globes for the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award.

Film 1005 - Mission: Impossible

Ad agosto a Rimini ho comprato il cofanetto con i primi 4 titol di questa saga, così da farmi trovare preparato per l'uscita nelle sale italiane del nuovissimo quinto episodio!

Pensieri: Credo sia inutile dire quanto questo primo "Mission: Impossible" sia maledettamente ben fatto. Oltre ad aver generato qualcosa come quattro sequel più o meno interconnessi (di cui l'ultimo a distanza di 19 anni dall'originale) ed aver miticizzato il personaggio di Ethan Hunt fondendolo con la marmorea stoicità di Cruise, non si può non considerare l'aspetto cult, sia per quanto riguarda una serie di scene mozzafiato (quella con Ethan appeso a una corda che si infiltra al quartier generale della CIA è la più riconoscibile) sia per quanto riguarda la colonna sonora, diventata simbolo oltre che riferimento diretto e indiscusso di film d'azione e spionaggio. Ma c'è di più: la sequenza iniziale, la prima maledetta missione a Praga, è qualcosa di stupendo, una scena che prescinde dal genere classico del film d'azione e catapulta "Mission: Impossible" direttamente nel thriller. Qualche mese prima che Wes Craven sacrificasse sullo schermo la sua unica attrice conosciuta (Drew Barrymore) nella prima, emozionante scena di "Scream", De Palma faceva molto peggio decimando tutta la sua squadra di attori a neanche 15 minuti dall'inizio della storia. Ed è così, con non poca sorpresa, che diciamo subito addio a Jon Voight, Kristin Scott Thomas e a una serie di altri agenti che cadranno come mosche. E il pubblico rimane spiazzato.
Trovo questo incipit una scelta geniale, che mette subito le carte in tavola: la storia è seria e non si scherza in questa saga. E' vero, ma solo in parte. I successivi titoli non avranno lo stesso intrigante coraggio o le stesse trovate di sceneggiatura. "Mission: Impossible", però, è un piccolo gioiellino riuscito, evidentemente all'avanguardia per l'epoca e quasi tenero da rivedere al giorno d'oggi, se si pensa a cosa si è spinto a fare Cruise nei panni dell'agente segreto (l'ultima è decollare attaccato a un portellone dell'aereo. All'esterno di esso...). Anche qui non si tira certo indietro, viene sballottato da una parte all'altra, tra esplosioni, attentati e piani segreti che nascondono un finale prevedibile, sì, ma comunque d'effetto.
Il cast è internazionale (c'è molta Francia) come del resto le location, come il genere richiede. Tanta azione e tanto scompiglio vanno ben distribuiti in tutto il pianeta, così da coinvolgere le situazioni più esotiche e impensabili, oltre che i pericoli più assurdi. Bene dunque, seguire Hunt in questa missione impossibile non solo è di grande intrattenimento, ma lascia assolutamente soddisfatti, tanto da desiderare di scoprire al più presto cosa ne sarà di lui...

Consigli: Incasso stellare per il primo adattamento cinematografico dell'omonima serie tv creata da Bruce Geller, successo di pubblico e critica, ha dato il via a una delle saghe più remunerative e prolifiche degli ultimi anni (5 film, 650 milioni di dollari per produrli e $2.770 miliardi di incasso). Al di là dell'insieme di film, questo è davvero un buon inizio: c'è tensione, mistero e sequenze d'azione e un sufficiente numero di gadget da spia per rendere il tutto dinamico e stuzzicante. Tom Cruise è l'uomo perfetto per il ruolo di Hunt e non a casa nessuno ha mai pensato a rimpiazzarlo dato che ieri come oggi è perfettamente in grado di essere credibile nei panni dell'agente segreto tutto scazzottate e trovate geniali. Sempre sul filo del rasoio del plausibile, eppure maledettamente divertente da guardare, un ottimo esempio di intrattenimento ben allestito e con una trama che funziona.

Pensieri: Il fascino dell'horror vale sempre anche in vacanza, ancora di più se il film è ben fatto.
Questo "The Exorcism of Emily Rose", che ormai avrò visto 3 o 4 volte è comunque sempre uno spaventoso piacere da guardare, riuscendo ogni volta a portarti a guardare se sono già arrivate le 3 del mattino (l'ora del diavolo!).
Tra suggestioni, visioni e contorsioni ginniche di una Jennifer Carpenter che eredita la decadenza satanica direttamente da Linda Blair de "L'esorcista", questa pellicola conduce attraverso un inusuale meccanismo narrativo (un processo giudiziario) nelle viscere di una tragedia umana e demoniaca (o solo mentale?) che, ricordandosi che è un episodio realmente accaduto, ha dell'inquietante.
Anche se è naturale si protenda per una resa romanzata degli eventi, non si può negare che il solo pensiero una cosa del genere possa accadere ad una persona sia spaventoso, senza contare le numerose domande che una storia come questa inevitabilmente porta alla luce. Una su tutte: ci sarà qualcosa di vero?
Alla fine poco importa crederci o meno, rimane il fatto che la discesa agli inferi della povera Emily Rose è un percorso straziante e pauroso che l'avvocato Erin Bruner/Laura Linney e padre Moore/Tom Wilkinson vivono e fanno vivere, lasciando ognuno di noi alle proprie domande. La produzione di questo film è molto buona, curata e molto ben calibrata tra l'horror e il genere giudiziario. Un esperimento riuscitissimo.
Film 177 -The Exorcism of Emily Rose

Consigli: Per quanto il tema della possessione demoniaca sia oltremodo conosciuto, trattato e sviscerato, l'approccio di questa pellicola è inusuale e funzionale al racconto, bilanciando bene i momenti in aula e il crescendo della tensione man mano che Emily precipita nel baratro. Inquietantissima l'interpretazione della Carpenter, vale davvero la pena di essere vista. Una nuova frontiera dell'horror? Non mi pare si sia più tentato di conciliare l'aula di un tribunale e un esorcismo finito male. A maggior ragione vale la pena vedere questa pellicola, sospesa fra l'intento di documentare e spaventare grazie alla scusa della storia vera (su Wiki per scoprire le differenze tra film e ciò che è accaduto). Se siete suggestionabili o credete in queste cose meglio lasciar perdere, gli altri si buttino.
