Intro: For Jake's last night at mine, this time around we went with a movie that he wanted to watch, and I knew it was a good pick.

Thoughts: Yeah, it was my fourth time watching it, and I enjoyed it just as much once again.
I'll keep it short and sweet because I feel like I've already said enough about Edward Berger's film: it's a great movie (my favourite of 2024), the cast is amazing (and I wish Ralph Fiennes had won an Oscar for this role), the cinematography and set decoration are stunning, and the soundtrack is so good it's worth listening to on Spotify.
Seeing this is a movie about religion, I'd call it a little miracle for how good and well-made it is.

Intro: I'm obviously obsessed with this movie and I wanted to show it to Michael, who didn't have the chance to go and see it at the movies.

Thoughts: The more I watch it, the more I enjoy it and notice new details, pay more attention to the soundtrack (this wonderful score should have won Volker Bertelmann the Oscar), love Ralph Fiennes' performance even more.
"Conclave" is a great movie, stunningly beautiful, every shot looks like a painting, carefully crafted to please the eyes of the audience. I'm really captivated by this movie, I find it beautiful and smart, its story compelling and entertaining (although I still feel such a shocking ending isn't really necessary here: maybe it works better in the book, I'm not sure it translate well in its cinematic counterpart). And it gives me great joy to see Isabella Rossellini and Sergio Castellitto in such a prestigious production.
One of the best movies from last year, definitely my pick for Best Picture at the Oscar.

Worth a watch?: I'd watch it another 50 times. "Conclave" is great, perfectly narrated, beautifully crafted, masterfully acted. It's a thriller more than anything else, very political and extremely symbolical. Like an onion, there are multiple layers to peal here.

Film 2334 - Conclave

Intro: Before I went to Boston, I asked Niamh and Debbi to wait until I got back to go and see this movie together. When in Salem, though, I broke my own promise and went to the movies and watched it with Bizzy (because, to be fair, there wasn't much else to do on a Monday night). So, when I got back to Dublin a week later, I went to see this movie again without telling the girls I've watched it already until the end of the show.

Briefly: I'm glad I saw this movie twice already because this second view felt a bit different than the first one.
Firstly, because the movie we watched in Salem had subtitles (as it was a video-described show), I admit I was a bit distracted by the text. Basically I was checking how the trasnaltion in Italian and Spanish was handled, if it made sense and was correct, but also reading the subtitles in English because when it's there on the big screen it's really hard to ignore it. This not to say that I didn't pay attention to the movie or the actors' work, but I was definitely paying less attention than usual. On a positive note, though, I didn't miss a bit of the story. (Usually, for example, I don't remember any character's name...)
That said, watching "Conclave" for a second time - and especially so soon after the first viewing - was a different experience because I knew the twists and turns of the story, so I could focus more on the actors this time. I'll be honest, I still think Isabella Rossellini gave a wonderful performance, not worthy of an Oscar nomination though. Again, not because she wasn't good, she's actually amazing in the movie, but because her part isn't big enough and doesn't have that "wow" moment, that scene that really has an impact on the viewers and stays with them even after the movie has coe to an end. She has one powerful scene and she definitely steals that moment from everyone else, but that happens literally for 30 seconds, than she disappears again. We'll see if the Academy rewards her - and if it happens I'll be ecstatic - yet I think it'd be very similar to what happened to Jamie Lee Curtis' Oscar win for "Everything Everywhere All at Once" or Keira Knightley's 2nd Oscar nomination for "The Imitation Game": the nomination comes with the movie. What I mean that the movie gets nominated in so many categories and it's so popular with Academy members that the supporting actress nom has a bigger shot at getting recognized. Because, let's be honest here, I'm glad Jamie Lee Curtis is an Oscar winner, but do we really thing she'd been nominated or even won if her movie didn't do so good on Oscars' night?
Anyway, Isabella Rossellini does a great job in the movie and I'm glad she's finally getting recognized by international awards bodies. And I'm also extremely happy that Ralph Finnes is back as a possible Oscar contender after many years of great performances but no recognition (his 2 Oscar nominations come from the 90s): his take on Cardinal Lawrence is exceptional and shows once again what an amazing actor he is. I really do think he has a shot at a possible Oscar win, althought I'm sure Timothée Chalamet will give him a run for his money in "A Complete Unknown".
Great performances aside, watching "Conclave" a second time really convinced me that this is one of the best movies of 2024. It has great actors, the story is smart and has numerous plot twists, Edward Berger's direction and vision is amazing and visually powerful, the soundtrack from Volker Bertelmann is so powerful and tense, and the movie overall presents a great story, a wonderfully written thriller that is both incredibily tense and stunningly beautiful. I'm still not a huge fan of the final plot twist, but I admit the second time around didn't bother me as much as the first time. (I still think it has a shock-value "effect" that is a bit out of place in this story, but it probably comes from Robert Harris' book and so the screenplay honours the sorce material here.)
"Conclave" is a great movie that presents a powerful story about faith, religion and doubt that goes hand in hand with politics and people's greed. Powerful.

Intro: E dopo i film visti in aereo, uno che ho visto al cinema. Curiosamente a Salem, Massachussets, dove mi sono recato per ritrovarmi con Bizzy, la mia compagnia di appartamento durante il master alla DCU. Non solo è stato bellissimo rivederla, ma ho trovato curioso che la città delle streghe ci offrisse come unica scelta cinematografica quella di una pellicola sulla Chiesa di Roma.

In sintesi: uno dei migliori film che ho visto quest'anno, "Conclave" è il primo film di Edward Berger dopo l'incredibile successo di "All Quiet on the Western Front" e le 4 vittorie agli Oscar del 2023 (su 9 nomination, una delle quali allo stesso Berger per la Miglior sceneggiatura originale). Se già non fosse difficile realizzare un buon film in generale, figuriamoci un buon film che ne segue un altro topo tale trionfo. Per guanto mi riguarda Berger è riuscito nell'impresa.
Nonostante potrebbe sembrare a una prima occhiata che "Conclave" sia un titolo biografico, in realtà si tratta di un thriller. A seguito della morte del Papa, i vari cardinali si radunano in preparazione dell'elezione del nuovo pontefice. Per quanto importante, parebbe semplicemente l'esecuzione di un compito semplice se non addirittura noioso mentre, man mano che la storia evolve, verranno rivelati i vari intrighi e ambizioni personali che si nascondo dietro ad un evento solitamente così inaccessibile.
Nonostante la sua facciata più "pia", questa pellicola si rivela ben presto per essere quasi un thriller politico, il che mi ha abbastanza stupito. Non che non mi aspettassi varie macchinazioni e una certa dose di campagna elettorale, per così dire, però non avevo capito sarebbe stato il focus di tutta la storia. Non avrei potuto esserne più contento. Tra tentativi di influenzare il voto, scandali da nascondere e una rosa di candidati che inizialmente sembra nutrita, ma man mano va ad assottigliarsi, "Conclave" racconta lucidamente i meccanismi che si celano dietro una delle elezioni ancora oggi più blindate e lo fa mai in maniera banale ma, anzi, riuscendo sempre a trovare un punto di vista interessante da mostrare allo spettatore (penso ad esempio alla bellissima scena degli ombrelli bianchi). Non solo un thriller, quindi, ma anche uno spettacolo per gli occhi.
In tutto questo si inserisce un altro insieme di elementi che vanno a completare il quadro di questo piccolo gioiellino di pellicola: un cast magnifico capitanato da un Ralph Fiennes mai così vicino alla sua terza nomination all'Oscar (la seconda risale al 1997 per "Il paziente inglese" e la prima al '94 per "Schindler's List" che, diciamocelo pure onestamente, Fiennes avrebbe dovuto vincere. Non credo Fiennes abbia alcuna chance di vincere, ma trovo assurdo che le sue uniche nomination risalgano agli anni '90), un certo senso di orgoglio patriottico per le performance di Sergio Castellitto e Isabella Rossellini (la cui performance ricordo specificamente di aver lodato all'uscita dal cinema, pur sentenziando che fosse una parte troppo piccola e senza un vero e proprio momento "wow" per poter ricevere alcuna attenzione in termini di premi che contano: i Golden Globes mi hanno subito smentino. Non penso che questa nomination si tramuterà, però, in una successiva candidatura all'Oscar, ma sarei felicissimo di essere smentito!), una colonna sonora pazzesca firmata da (già vincitore di Oscar e BAFTA per "All Quiet on the Western Front") in grado di conferire al film toni drammatici e momenti di suspense che ho trovato meravigliosi, una fotografia molto interessante e, come già dicevo prima, un punto di vista estetico chiaramente sviluppato che conferisce al film un tono artistico che va oltre al semplice "bel film".
Due menzioni speciali, poi, che ho trovato personalmente gratificanti: la campagna di comunicazione che ha giocato tantissimo coi poster, tanto che ho fatto fatica a scegliere quello che più mi piacesse + un estremamente soddisfacente rimando a quel capolavoro che è "Doubt" di John Patrick Shanley. Mi rendo perfettamente conto che questa connessione non sia intenzionale e che, ovviamente, stia negli occhi di chi guarda - in questo caso io - ma mi ha comunque colpito ritrovare certe allusioni molto simili a quelle della pellicola del 2008, penso in particolare (*SPOILER*) al momento in cui Cardinal Lawrence (Fiennes) decide finalmente di votare per se stesso e si verifica l'attentato che fa saltare in aria una delle finestre della Cappella Sistina.
Un'unica nota negativa che per me ha leggermente stonato il risultato finale: non so quanto il colpo di scena che riguarda il nuovo Cardinal Benitez (Carlos Diehz) fosse necessario. Capisco il motivo dietro la scelta, specialmente quando per tutto il racconto ci è stato mostrato quanto le donne non vengano considerate all'interno del mondo della Chiesa cattolica, però rispetto alla storia nel suo complesso, mi è sembrato che il finale decida improvvisamente di piegarsi alla regola del soprendere a tutti i costi comune a titoli più commerciali di questo che, invece, parrebbe aver più interesse nello stimolare una conversazione sui temi della sua trama. Mi immagino che la scelta sia, ovviamente, da ritrovarsi nel romanzo omonimo di Robert Harris da cui "Conclave" è tratto.
In generale, comunque, il film di Berger è una boccata d'aria fresca in un anno cinematografico non particolarmente costellato da titoli indimenticabili. Assolutamente da vedere.

Vale o non vale: "Conclave" (che ho già visto due volte) durante la visione mi ha spesso ricordato altri titoli per un motivo o per un altro, penso a "Doubt", ma anche alla serie "The Handmaid's Tale" o il ben più commerciale "Angels & Demons". Al pari della pellicola di John Patrick Shanley, "Conclave" presenta molti spunti di riflessione sul mondo della Chiesa, nonché in questo caso la sua rilevanza e il suo essere così ancorata al passato e alle sue tradizioni da risultare quasi sconnessa dal mondo contemporaneo. In un susseguirsi di intrighi e colpi di scena, la pellicola di Berger si rivela presto per l'ottimo thriller che è e, allo stesso tempo, lascia lo spettatore con non pochi spunti di riflessione. A questo si aggiungono l'ottimo cast, una colonna sonora pazzesca e una visione estetica particolarmente spiccata e gratificante da guardare.
