Which of the movies I saw this year were the ones I liked the most and which ones were forgettable or even... bad?

The only time I did my personal list of best and worst of the year was in 2017 and I think it's time to bring this tradition back for 2024, a year not necessarily great for movies, but one that saw a few good ones nonetheless. Let's start!

Film 2266 & 2276 - Dune: Part Two

Intro: Uscito i primi di marzo e già visto due volte, la seconda il giorno prima di tornare in Italia per Pasqua.

Film 2266 & 2276: "Dune: Part Two" (2024) di Denis Villeneuve

In sintesi: seppure il primo film mi fosse piaciuto, non posso dire avessi sentito l'urgenza di rivederlo. Bello, ma lento. Qui cambia decisamente la musica.
Nonostante una trama piuttosto intricata e una miriade di personaggi a cui, in questo capitolo, se ne aggiunge un'altra svalangata, "Dune: Part Two" riesce senza problemi a gestire la complessità di tutti questi elementi e personaggi che si intrecciano, per un risultato finale avvincente e di grande intrattenimento.
Molto più ritmato rispetto al primo capitolo, come per l'episodio precente anche qui gli effetti speciali sono spettacolari (forse addirittura l'elemento più "sconvolgente" in termini di qualità del prodotto finale), il sonoro pazzesco e la colonna sonora di Hans Zimmer iconica quanto e se non addirittura più di quella di "Dune". Insomma, Denis Villeneuve è riuscito dove molti altri prima di lui hanno fallito, ovvero ha confezionato un sequel in grado di superare in termini di qualità il titolo che ha originato la saga (già ottimo di per sé, tra l'altro).
Sia chiaro, non è solo merito di Villeneuve: il cast è pazzesco e in grande spolvero, con performance particolarmente notevoli come quelle di Austin Butler (forse quello che rimane più impresso fra tutti), Rebecca Ferguson e, ovviamente, il duo Timothée Chalamet e Zendaya che funziona sorprendentemente bene e, in questo secondo film, ha più occasioni di mostrare la sua chimica. Chalamet, in particolare, ha un ruolo non facile in questa parte della storia e, anche se non credo riuscirà ad assicurarsi la sua seconda nomination all'Oscar per questa performance, dimostra ancora una volta di essere uno dei pochissimi ad Hollywood che possa essere effettivamente considerato una star a tutti gli effetti (di quelli che la gente va a vedere al cinema, per capirsi).
La prossima parte del romanzo di Frank Herbert pare essere la più difficile da adattare e sarà da vedere se Villeneuve sarà in grado di bissare ulteriormente il suo successo e continuare il momento fortunato di questa saga. Per il momento, però, ci accontentiamo delle certezze: "Dune: Part Two" è un successo (meritato).

Vale o non vale: Chi ha visto il primo film (e lo ha gradito) non può davvero esimersi dal recuperarne il sequel. Potentissimo a livello visivo, evocativo e mistico nonché iconico per tutta una serie di motivi (fotografia, costumi, location, colonna sonora, dialoghi, regia), "Dune: Part Two" è il titolo evento di questa prima parte del 2024 e, anche se certamente non ha la stessa trazione mediatica che ha avuto il fenomeno Barbenheimer, la pellicola di cui tutti parlano che va vista quantomeno per farsi una propria opinione. Poi, per carità, la saga di "Dune" non è certo per tutti, ma questa seconda uscita è superiore alla prima e una chance bisognerebbe dargliela.

Oscars 2022: nomination e vincitori

Annunciate le nomination questa mattina all'alba (americana) con non poche difficioltà tecniche da Tracee Ellis Ross e Leslie Jordan, gli Oscar 2022 sono ufficialmente realtà. Tutto più o meno come previsto, anche se ci sono state alcune sorprese: niente nomination per Lady Gaga o Jennifer Hudson nella categoria Miglior attrice protagonista, niente di niente per "Passing" di Rebecca Hall, no cadidatura alla regia per Villeneuve (scandalo) come nemmeno per Maggie Gyllenhaal, anche se sono entrambi candidati alla sceneggiatura.
Belle sorprese quelle di Penélope Cruz e Judi Dench e belle conferme - dopo lo spavento dei BAFTA - di Kristen Stewart e Kirsten Dunst. Italia di nuovo in gara per il film straniero grazie a Sorrentino. Non mi aspettavo, invece, di vedere candidati Nicole Kidman e Javier Bardem per "Being the Ricardos".
Piccola curiosità: Penélope Cruz e Javier Bardem, Kirsten Dunst e Jesse Plemons sono tutti candidati nelle categorie attoriali e, nella vita vera, sono due coppie. Cruz e Bardem sono in lizza per gli attori protagonisti, mentre Dunst e Plemons per i non protagonisti.

Gli Oscar 2022 si terranno il 27 marzo 2022.

Film 2065 - Dune

Intro: In Italia uscito a metà settembre, durante la mia pausa a Bologna non ero riuscito a recuperarlo al cinema perché diviso tra lavoro e amici, per cui mi ero detto sarei andato a vederlo non appena tornato a Dublino. Peccato che qui uscisse con quasi un mese di ritardo... E mi è toccato aspettare (ancora).

Film 2065: "Dune" (2021) di Denis Villeneuve

In sintesi: per essere un film d'azione c'è sicuramente un fortissimo senso di immobilismo e staticità che pervade tutta la pellicola, ma del resto c'era da aspettarselo considerando che si tratta di un prodotto del grande Denis Villeneuve, uno che in quanto ad immagini iconiche la sa lunga. E c'è da dire che questo suo personale approccio all'opera di Frank Herbert ha certamente un grande sapore iconico.
Già perché, diciamocelo, forse più che per la grande avventura fantasy, siamo corsi al cinema per assistere ad un vero e proprio spettacolo per gli occhi, una promessa che onestamente è stata mantenuta: "Dune" è visivamente impeccabile.
Da aggiungere, poi, che ad andare di pari passo con la visione estetica di grande impatto, c'è al contempo un cast da urlo che grida Hollywood di serie A da tutte le parti: Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem (che insieme contano 1 premio Oscar, 3 candidati all'Oscar, una vincitrice dell'Emmy, 2 vincitori del Golden Globe. Così, per gradire, e senza contare la nomination all'Oscar di Villeneuve stesso per "Arrival"). Insomma, che con questo titolo si puntasse tantissimo all'appeal glam, visionario e, al contempo, da cinema un po' impegnato non vi erano dubbi.
Poi dall'altra parte c'è la storia, un racconto lunghissimo che qui si presta solo ad una primo capitolo che fa assaporare il potenziale del prossimo, pur caricandosi di trazione narrativa principalmente nel finale. Perché, diciamocelo, per una buona parte di film succede poco o nulla. E non tanto perché non ci siano cose da raccontare, quanto proprio perché toni e passo delle opere del regista canadese sono proprio questi, lenti, assaporati, talvolta sospirati e carichissimi di sguardi penetranti, cose non dette o solo accennate, comunque da intuire. E sì, lo ammetto, non ho sempre capito di cosa stessimo parlando.
Un po' perché la mitologia dietro questa opera non la conosc(ev)o, un po' perché tra musiche ed elementi sonori molto alti facevo proprio fatica a decifrare certi dialoghi sospirati, ammetto che qualcosina me la sia persa. Poco male, di fatto il passo placido della trama (soprattutto iniziale) mi ha permesso di colmare sufficientemente certe lacune.
Detto questo, mi sento di aggiungere solo una considerazione. Come al solito la carica gigantesca di aspettative che mi portavo dietro per questo film ha finito per guastare un po' il risultato finale. Non tanto perché non mi sia piaciuto - assolutamente il contrario - quanto perché effettivamente mi ero preparato a ricevere il verbo della divinità suprema del cinema contemporaneo, per cui è stato un po' difficile dover ridimensionare l'idea di partenza che mi fossi fatto. Per fare un esempio, non ho capito il perché di tutti i complimenti fatti agli effetti speciali che sì, sono assolutamente magnifici, eppure non particolarmente difformi o superiori ad altre opere cinematografiche cui Hollywood ci ha abituato. Lo stesso si dica per la trama che è certamente ben scritta e carica di pathos, ma non il capolavoro assoluto che mi sarei aspettato di trovare (perché qualche momentino noioso c'è eh, sia chiaro).
Poi in realtà per il resto "Dune" è stata un'esperienza da cinema in tutti i sensi, uno spettacolo visivo e un bel regalo che la settima arte ci ha fatto dopo mesi (forse anche un anno) di mediocrità trita che ha prodotto veramente poche, poche perle. Qui si è tornati al cinema in grande spolvero, ai film che vanno visti in sala, alle opere capaci di farti meravigliare per almeno un aspetto magicamente positivo. Insomma, la scommessa "Dune" è stata certamente vinta.

Preparatevi a 2 ore e mezza nonstop nel deserto tra magie e intrighi politici, sogni e profezie, il tutto visivamente incastonato alla perfezione, con un Timothée Chalamet sempre più lanciato, una Rebecca Ferguson finalmente vera protagonista, una colonna sonora (di Hans Zimmer) perfetta e una grande, grandissima visione registica. Però preparatevi anche a farvi due pal*e così in certi momenti. Avvisati.

Film 2050 - Jodorowsky's Dune

In sintesi: devo ammettere non avessi una gran voglia di vedere questo film, forse non ero del tutto convinto. Ma Marta, la mia manager, continuava a ripetermi che fosse un documentario fantastico, così mi sono lasciato convincere. E, in effetti, non posso dire di non aver gradito l'opera di Frank Pavich, specialmente grazie ad un Alejandro Jodorowsky particolarmente in forma (che repeterà la parola "person" almeno 25 volte durante i 90 minuti di durata... La cosa mi ha fatto molto ridere).
Da una parte Jodorowsky ricorda un po' un Benigni messicano, così pieno di vita e amore per ciò che fa, la sua arte; dall'altro non si può fare a meno di pensare che non sia un filino fuori di testa. In senso buono, ci mancherebbe. Anche perché ci deve essere del genio nel riuscire a mettere insieme una squadra di talenti come riuscì a fare lui: Salvador Dalí, Orson Welles, Gloria Swanson, David Carradine, Mick Jagger, Udo Kier, Amanda Lear, Pink Floyd e Magma tutti pronti a mettersi in gioco per una delle pellicole più ambiziose mai realizzate. E quando dico 'mai realizzate' si intenda letteralmente.
Già, perché del "Dune" di Jodorowsky oggi rimane solo un ricordo, la speranza di riuscire a realizzare un prodotto all'avanguardia e spettacolare che, però, non trovò mai tutti i fondi sufficienti alla realizzazione vera e propria. E da quello che ci mostra questo documentario, è un vero peccato.
Rimangono testimonianze concrete nella forma di libri, fotografie, interviste, fumetti e, naturalmente, questo film, il che aumenta il valore della creatura di Pavich. Che, va detto, è un piacere da vedere.

Specialmente se intendete recuperare (o lo avete già fatto) l'attesissimo primo capitolo cinematografico di Villeneuve o, addirittura, il film dell'84 diretto nientemeno che da David Lynch.
