Film 2479 - Conclave

Intro: For Jake's last night at mine, this time around we went with a movie that he wanted to watch, and I knew it was a good pick.

Film 2479
: "Conclave" (2024), Edward Berger
Watched: On the projector
Language: English, Spanish, Italian, Latin
Watched with: Jake
Thoughts: Yeah, it was my fourth time watching it, and I enjoyed it just as much once again.
I'll keep it short and sweet because I feel like I've already said enough about Edward Berger's film: it's a great movie (my favourite of 2024), the cast is amazing (and I wish Ralph Fiennes had won an Oscar for this role), the cinematography and set decoration are stunning, and the soundtrack is so good it's worth listening to on Spotify.
Seeing this is a movie about religion, I'd call it a little miracle for how good and well-made it is.

Cast: Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Lucian Msamati, Brían F. O'Byrne, Carlos Diehz, Isabella Rossellini, Sergio Castellitto.
Box Office: $128 million
Worth a watch?: Before "Obsession", I was obsessed with this film. I think it's an amazing example of how cinema can entertain, make you think, and create something beautiful to look at and listen to.
Awards: 1 Oscar win for Best Adapted Screenplay over 8 Oscar nominations (Best Picture, Actor for Fiennes, Supporting Actress for Rossellini, Original Score, Editing, Production Design, and Costume Design). 1 Golden Globe won for Best Screenplay out of 6 nominations in the drama category (Best Movie, Actor, Supporting Actress, Director, and Original Score). 12 BAFTA nominations and 4 wins for Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Editing.

Film 2437 - 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple

Intro: We watched the previous one that only came out last year, and of course we couldn't miss this one..

Film 2437
: "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple" (2026), Nia DaCosta
Watched: At the movies
Language: English
Watched with: Debbi, Niamh
Thoughts: "The Bone Temple" is a good follow-up to the previous "28 Years Later", and the quality of these two movies together is surprisingly high. I'm saying surprisingly just because it's not often that a relatively small franchise like this one gets a trilogy sequel more than 20 years after the original movie came out and still maintains such consistency in quality. Even more so considering this one and the previous outing hit theaters only 6 months apart.
Timelines aside, "The Bone Temple" focuses heavily on Ralph Fiennes' and Jack O'Connell's characters from the previous movie. The two give stellar performances, and their character journeys are both extreme and satisfying. After his Oscar nomination last year (he should have won), it looks like we're witnessing a Ralph Fiennes renaissance, and I'm all here for it.
My only criticism of this film is the level of violence displayed. I'm not a prude, and I understand this is a work of fiction, but it was tough to witness all the torture sequences, and after a while I honestly couldn't take it anymore.
The storyline between Dr. Ian Kelson (Fiennes) and Samson (Chi Lewis-Parry) is predictable at times, but it's probably the most interesting part of the story. It will be interesting to see how the zombie monster evolves after what happens to him in this second chapter.
Overall, "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple" is a good movie and an excellent sequel, well directed by Nia DaCosta ("Candyman", "The Marvels", "Hedda"). It's a pity that it didn't make enough money at the box office (the production budget was $63 million). Maybe the January release was too soon and hurt its performance, or possibly this franchise isn't strong enough to justify a trilogy so long after the original movie came out. Either way, the shooting of the third movie depended on the performance of this film, so it's unclear if this story will see its end at all. I have my fingers crossed!
P.S. As rumored before the movie came out, Cillian Murphy makes a cameo appearance at the end of the film, reprising his original role from the first "28 Days Later".
Film 2391 - 28 Years Later
Film 2437 - 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple
Cast: Ralph Fiennes, Jack O'Connell, Alfie Williams, Erin Kellyman, Chi Lewis-Parry, Emma Laird, Sam Locke, Cillian Murphy.
Box Office: $58.4 million
Worth a watch?: If you like this franchise and/or the previous movie, this is definitely worth the watch! As a standalone film, though, I'm not sure this works, as there would be a lot to unpack and catch up with if you don't know what happened before in the story.

Film 2391 - 28 Years Later

Intro: I watched the first movie ages ago, I remember I liked it and that was kinda it. Probably my first introduction to Cillian Murphy.

Film 2390
: "28 Years Later" (2025), Danny Boyle
Watched: At the movies
Language: English
Watched with: Niamh, Debbi
Thoughts: I remember vaguely what happens in the first "28 Days Later", but I'd say it was enough to go off of and understand what's going on here: the zombies are still around, the world is still infected, the survivors are spread in communities far away from each other.
It might seem like your average dystopian-horror movie, but there's a bit more to it. First of all, the zombies are not our main concern straight away. The story takes its time to introduce the new characters, letting us familiarize with the environment and the general rules. At the beginning, it doesn't even feel like you're watching a horror movie. There's a fairly realistic approach to the first part of the story, the one on the secluded island, there's a sick mom, a dad, and a child and all of them are trying to cope and survive their own way. I appreciated the tone of this first section of the movie - in a way it reminded me how "Prey" recontextualized the Predator franchise by positioning it in a plausible scenario, the Northern Great Plains of 1719 - but after a while I was ready for the story to move on.
To be fair, when it does, things start to happen fast. The rest of the story is more zombie-hunt and horror-like, it works really well and it's very interesting till the very end, when a strange character named Jimmy (Jack O'Connell) appears together with a group of look alikes. It promises a sequel ("28 Years Later: The Bone Temple") that is coming out next January.
I liked "28 Years Later", I found it very entertaining and well shot (although the quality of the images sometimes would change and degrade a bit). Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes are superb, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Alfie Williams are great leads, and I was happy to see Jack O'Connell finally back on the silver screen.

Cast: Alfie Williams, Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O'Connell, Edvin Ryding, Chi Lewis-Parry, Ralph Fiennes.
Box Office: $151.3 million
Worth a watch?: It's definitely worth the watch, especially this time of the year. It's a good movie in general and a well made horrow movie. It works for the fans of the franchise, but it doesn't require you to know what happened before to follow the story.

Film 2351 - Conclave

Intro: I'm obviously obsessed with this movie and I wanted to show it to Michael, who didn't have the chance to go and see it at the movies.

Film 2351
: "Conclave" (2024), Edward Berger
Watched on: The TV
Language: English, Spanish, Italian, Latin
Watched with: Michael
Thoughts: The more I watch it, the more I enjoy it and notice new details, pay more attention to the soundtrack (this wonderful score should have won Volker Bertelmann the Oscar), love Ralph Fiennes' performance even more.
"Conclave" is a great movie, stunningly beautiful, every shot looks like a painting, carefully crafted to please the eyes of the audience. I'm really captivated by this movie, I find it beautiful and smart, its story compelling and entertaining (although I still feel such a shocking ending isn't really necessary here: maybe it works better in the book, I'm not sure it translate well in its cinematic counterpart). And it gives me great joy to see Isabella Rossellini and Sergio Castellitto in such a prestigious production.
One of the best movies from last year, definitely my pick for Best Picture at the Oscar.

Film 2351 - Conclave
Film 2479 - Conclave
Cast: Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Sergio Castellitto, Carlos Diehz, Lucian Msamati, Isabella Rossellini.
Box Office: $107.6 million
Worth a watch?: I'd watch it another 50 times. "Conclave" is great, perfectly narrated, beautifully crafted, masterfully acted. It's a thriller more than anything else, very political and extremely symbolical. Like an onion, there are multiple layers to peal here.
Awards: 1 Oscar win for Best Adapted Screenplay over 8 Oscar nominations (Best Picture, Actor for Fiennes, Supporting Actress for Rossellini, Original Score, Editing, Production Design, and Costume Design). 1 Golden Globe won for Best Screenplay out of 6 nominations in the drama category (Best Movie, Actor, Supporting Actress, Director, and Original Score). 12 BAFTA nominations and 4 wins for Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Editing.

Film 2334 - Conclave

Intro: Before I went to Boston, I asked Niamh and Debbi to wait until I got back to go and see this movie together. When in Salem, though, I broke my own promise and went to the movies and watched it with Bizzy (because, to be fair, there wasn't much else to do on a Monday night). So, when I got back to Dublin a week later, I went to see this movie again without telling the girls I've watched it already until the end of the show.

Film 2334
: "Conclave" (2024), Edward Berger
Watched on: At the movies
Language: English, Spanish, Italian, Latin
Watched with: Niamh, Debbi
Briefly: I'm glad I saw this movie twice already because this second view felt a bit different than the first one.
Firstly, because the movie we watched in Salem had subtitles (as it was a video-described show), I admit I was a bit distracted by the text. Basically I was checking how the trasnaltion in Italian and Spanish was handled, if it made sense and was correct, but also reading the subtitles in English because when it's there on the big screen it's really hard to ignore it. This not to say that I didn't pay attention to the movie or the actors' work, but I was definitely paying less attention than usual. On a positive note, though, I didn't miss a bit of the story. (Usually, for example, I don't remember any character's name...)
That said, watching "Conclave" for a second time - and especially so soon after the first viewing - was a different experience because I knew the twists and turns of the story, so I could focus more on the actors this time. I'll be honest, I still think Isabella Rossellini gave a wonderful performance, not worthy of an Oscar nomination though. Again, not because she wasn't good, she's actually amazing in the movie, but because her part isn't big enough and doesn't have that "wow" moment, that scene that really has an impact on the viewers and stays with them even after the movie has coe to an end. She has one powerful scene and she definitely steals that moment from everyone else, but that happens literally for 30 seconds, than she disappears again. We'll see if the Academy rewards her - and if it happens I'll be ecstatic - yet I think it'd be very similar to what happened to Jamie Lee Curtis' Oscar win for "Everything Everywhere All at Once" or Keira Knightley's 2nd Oscar nomination for "The Imitation Game": the nomination comes with the movie. What I mean that the movie gets nominated in so many categories and it's so popular with Academy members that the supporting actress nom has a bigger shot at getting recognized. Because, let's be honest here, I'm glad Jamie Lee Curtis is an Oscar winner, but do we really thing she'd been nominated or even won if her movie didn't do so good on Oscars' night?
Anyway, Isabella Rossellini does a great job in the movie and I'm glad she's finally getting recognized by international awards bodies. And I'm also extremely happy that Ralph Finnes is back as a possible Oscar contender after many years of great performances but no recognition (his 2 Oscar nominations come from the 90s): his take on Cardinal Lawrence is exceptional and shows once again what an amazing actor he is. I really do think he has a shot at a possible Oscar win, althought I'm sure Timothée Chalamet will give him a run for his money in "A Complete Unknown".
Great performances aside, watching "Conclave" a second time really convinced me that this is one of the best movies of 2024. It has great actors, the story is smart and has numerous plot twists, Edward Berger's direction and vision is amazing and visually powerful, the soundtrack from Volker Bertelmann is so powerful and tense, and the movie overall presents a great story, a wonderfully written thriller that is both incredibily tense and stunningly beautiful. I'm still not a huge fan of the final plot twist, but I admit the second time around didn't bother me as much as the first time. (I still think it has a shock-value "effect" that is a bit out of place in this story, but it probably comes from Robert Harris' book and so the screenplay honours the sorce material here.)
"Conclave" is a great movie that presents a powerful story about faith, religion and doubt that goes hand in hand with politics and people's greed. Powerful.
Film 2327 - Conclave
Film 2332 - Conclave
Film 2351 - Conclave
Film 2479 - Conclave
Cast: Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Sergio Castellitto, Lucian Msamati, Carlos Diehz, Isabella Rossellini.
Box Office: $51.4 milion
Worth a watch? A must-see. Great movie, stunningly shot, with a plot twist after another. The cast is amazing, the visuals are evocative and the soundtrack is the glue to it all, for a final result that is thrilling and exciting. Not your typical religion movie!
Awards: Nominated to 6 Golden Globe nominations in the drama category for Best Movie, Best Actor in a Motion Picture (Fiennes), Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture (Rossellini), Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Original Score.

Film 2329 - Conclave

Lingua: inglese, italiano, spagnolo, latino
Compagnia: Bizzy

Film 2153 - The Menu

Intro: Lo abbiamo visto qualche mese fa.

Film 2153: "The Menu" (2022) di Mark Mylod
Visto: al cinema
Lingua: inglese
Cast: Ralph Fiennes, Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, Hong Chau, Janet McTeer, Paul Adelstein, Reed Birney, Rob Yang, Judith Light, John Leguizamo.
Premi: Candidato a 2 Golden Globe per Miglior attore musical o commedia (Ralph Fiennes) e Miglior attrice musical o commedia (Anya Taylor-Joy).
Parola chiave: Experience.

Film 2095 - The King's Man

Film 2095: "The King's Man" (2021) di Matthew Vaughn
Visto: dal computer portatile
Lingua: inglese
Compagnia: nessuno

Film 1396 - Kingsman: Secret Service

Cast: Ralph Fiennes, Gemma Arterton, Rhys Ifans, Matthew Goode, Tom Hollander, Harris Dickinson, Daniel Brühl, Djimon Hounsou, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Alexandra Maria Lara, Stanley Tucci, David Kross, Charles Dance.
Box Office: $125.9 milioni

Film 2083 - Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts

Film 2083: "Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts" (2022) di Casey Patterson, Joe Pearlman, Giorgio Testi
Visto: dal computer portatile
Lingua: inglese
Compagnia: Karen, Lucas

Film 2055 - No Time to Die

Film 2055: "No Time to Die" (2021) di Cary Joji Fukunaga
Visto: al cinema
Lingua: inglese
Compagnia: John
E ora la grande domanda: what's next for James Bond? Ps.

Film 1979 - The Dig

Film 1979: "The Dig" (2021) di Simon Stone
Visto: dal computer portatile
Lingua: inglese
Compagnia: nessuno

The protagonist is Edith Pretty. She wants for the mounds to be dug because she wants to know what may be buried underneath them. She also wants for her child to be safe and cared after, as she knows she is going to die soon as her illness worsen, and later on she wants for the work and contribution of Basil Brown to be acknowledged by the people from the museum.
Basil is driven by his passion for discovering the past.
Obstacles are: her illness, the upcoming war, the people from the museum.

Cast: Carey Mulligan, Ralph Fiennes, Lily James, Johnny Flynn, Ben Chaplin, Ken Stott, Archie Barnes, Monica Dolan.
Box Office: /
Parola chiave: Buried ship.

Oggi come allora.
Cast: Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley, Ralph Fiennes, Caroline Goodall, Jonathan Sagall, Embeth Davidtz.
Box Office: $322.1 milioni

Cast: Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Alden Ehrenreich, Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill, Scarlett Johansson, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, Channing Tatum, Alison Pill, Wayne Knight, Christopher Lambert.
Box Office: $63.6 milioni
Vale o non vale: Sinceramente? Pensavo molto, molto peggio.
