Film 2326 - Gladiator II

In sintesi: considerato che gli ultimi film di Ridley Scott non mi hanno esttamente entusiasmato, ammetto che non nutrissi grandi speranze per il sequel di "Gladiator". Forse anche grazie alle mie basse aspettative, devo dire che tutto sommato il film mi è piaciuto.
No, "Gladiator II" non è all'altezza del suo predecessore, ma questo non significa che non riesca comunque a veicolare la giusta dose di spettacolo e intrattenimento. Ci sono tante cose di questa pellicola che non funzionano, ma quelle che invece sono fatte a dovere aiutano a mitigare un risultato finale che, di fatto, per me è stato positivo.
Partiamo da quello che non va: Lucius Verus Aurelius (Paul Mescal) è uno strano protagonista. È carismatico e sicuramente ben interpretato da Mescal, ma a mio avviso a livello narrativo certe cose non tornano. La storia non ci mostra praticamente mai quali siano le sue dosi di guerriero se non all'inizio del film: noi spettatori sappiamo quello di cui è capace, ma gli altri protagonisti no. Eppure, una volta nell'arena del Colosseo, tutti gli altri gladiatori si affidano alla guida di Lucius senza battere ciglio. L'ho trovato un po' semplicistico.
Un'altra cosa che mi ha confuso del protagonista è il suo iniziale rifiuto a riconoscersi quale figlio di Lucilla (Connie Nielsen): inizialmente dice di non essere il bambino che abbiamo visto nel primo film, poi però improvvisamente cambia idea e fa pace con la madre. Niente di tutto quello che porta a questo cambiamento di atteggiamento viene spiegato dalla storia e, improvvisamente, Lucius e Lucilla sono madre e figlio come un tempo.
Stessa cosa dicasi per l'iniziale voglia di vendetta di Lucius nei confronti del generale Acacius (Pedro Pascal): prima lo vuole morto, poi improvvisamente si alleano e combattono insieme.
Il secondo grande problema che ho avuto con questa storia sono i 3 anatagonisti, ovvero i due imperatori pazzi Geta (Joseph Quinn) e Caracalla (Fred Hechinger) e, più avanti nel racconto, Macrinus (Denzel Washington). I primi sono totalmente inutili in termini narrativi dato che aggiungono poco e niente agli avvenimenti racconti; inoltre non mi è piaciuta la recitazione eccessiva e sopra le righe per cui i due attori (e il regista, mi immagino) hanno optato. Per quanto riguarda Macrinus, certe scelte recitative di Washington mi hanno lasciato un po' perplesso, ci sono una marea di pose e gesti estremamente teatrali che mi hanno distratto dalle varie scene in cui è presente l'attore.
Detto questo - lo so che sembrano una marea di critiche, ma sono solo cose che ho notato durante la visione - rimane il fatto che "Gladiator II" offre una buona dose di intrattenimento spettacolare, anche grazie a tutta una serie di scene di combattimento che sicuramente non mancano di impressionare. Mi rimane ancora il dubbio di come abbiano fatto i romani nel 200 AC a portare degli squali vivi fino al Colosseo, ma a un certo punto bisogna abbracciare quella sospensione dell'incredulità che ci consente di gustare storie di finzione come questa.
Aggiungo che ho trovato Paul Mescal adatto alla parte, nonché un buon protagonista in generale e mi fa piacere vedere il suo talento riconosciuto a livello internazionale in un blockbuster come questo. È stato piacevole anche ritrovare Connie Nielsen, un'attrice dall'inequivocabile fascino che, però, fatica a trovare maggiore spazio in quello che è il cinema mainstream moderno.
Nota finale per Ridley Scott che, a 87 anni compiuti, non smette di appassionare gli spettatori grazie ai suoi titoli cinematografici.

Vale o non vale: I fan dell'originale dovrebbero apprezzare. C'è meno coesione narrativa rispetto al primo film, ma il risultato finale è comunque godibile e gli effetti speciali aiutano a creare uno spettacolo cinematografico che intrattiene. Belli i costumi, ma la fotografia è un po' troppo "carica" (saturazione a gogo e spinta particolarmente marcata del nero, una caratteristica che ho riscontrato in altri lavori recenti di Scott, come "Prometheus", "Exodus: Gods and Kings", "Alien: Covenant", "All the Money in the World", "House of Gucci" e "Napoleon", tutti a firma del direttore della fotografia Dariusz Wolski).
