Film 2496 - The 'Burbs

Intro: I started watching the TV show that is based on this movie a while ago and got curious. So, once I finished the show, I decided to give the OG film a go.

Thoughts: I'll be honest, I had never heard of this film before, which is a bit strange considering Tom Hanks is in it. In Italian, the movie is called "L'erba del vicino" and even that didn't ring a bell, so I went in completely unaware of what to expect. I mean, to a certain extent, considering "The 'Burbs" TV series is based on it, but we all know remakes tend to differ quite a bit from the original material, so I was definitely expecting differences and changes to the plot, the first one being that the main character here is a man, whereas in the series it's a woman (Keke Palmer).
Differences from the original material aside -- there are, but not to the point that the main idea is different: the shady neighbors remain, the mystery behind everyone's door and how everyone keeps a secret is still there -- I have to admit I enjoyed the TV series more. Obviously, this movie is from the late 80s, so it's more rooted in the culture of the time. So is the humor and the execution of the mystery, which to me felt like the weakest point of the whole "The 'Burbs" experience. I know this isn't a horror movie, so it's OK that there aren't scary moments, but considering how the sketchy neighbors plotline is portrayed, I was expecting a little bit of... fright?
Instead, after spending so much time dissecting the mystery, the whole thing resolves in such a hurry that, as a viewer, I wasn't sure the story was actually done. Which felt quite strange, to be honest.
In this sense, I think this movie is a product of its time: it utilises a different visual language that I'm not sure fully works nowadays. The resolution of the story is explained rather than shown, and you get to know what the whole mystery was mostly through dialogue and what is said afterwards, rather than seeing it on the screen.
Aside from this, though, I can't say I didn't enjoy this trip to "The 'Burbs". It's a fun enough ride, and I can understand why it is now considered a cult classic: the characters are all over the top, the shady neighborhood is a fascinating idea, and Tom Hanks gives a quirky performance that is quite unusual for him. On top of that, Carrie Fisher -- the icon that she is -- plays his wife, and the movie was shot on the same set that would later be used to create Wisteria Lane from the (iconic) show "Desperate Housewives", so I totally see the appeal.
So, all in all, I think the TV series spoke to me more, but I still enjoyed Joe Dante's crazy ride to the suburbs.

Worth a watch?: If you watched the recent TV series, I'd say go ahead and watch this film to fully commit. The same applies to the opposite scenario: if you loved this movie in the past, I think Peacock's series is worth the watch, even just to compare the two products and see how they apply to the time period they were released in.

Thoughts: I've watched this movie a bunch of times already and always find it funny. It's not a masterpiece or anything, but it's almost like a comfort watch that, at the right time, delivers exactly what I need. Similar to other films like "21 Jump Street", "22 Jump Street" or "We're the Millers".
So I guess the vibe was once again right for me, as I really enjoyed rewatching this first "Neighbors" - the sequel isn't that good - after so many years since I last saw it.
I think Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne have great chemistry together, and watching the two of them go up against the other screen duo, Zac Efron and Dave Franco, is a pleasure. My personal highlights: the airbag and milking scenes. Hilarious.
All in all, a solid comedy that still works more than 10 years later. And these days, that's quite the feat.

Worth a watch?: It's the type of comedy that isn't for everybody, I understand that, but if you enjoy a less refined humor that goes all in on the politically incorrect, this is the movie for you. This one. Again, not the second one.
Awards: 3 wins at the MTV Movie + TV Awards Best Shirtless Performance (Zac Efron), Best Duo (Zac Efron, Dave Franco), and Best WTF Moment (Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne) over 7 nominations (Best Comedic Performance for Rose Byrne, Best Musical Moment, Best Kiss, Best Fight).

Pensieri: Di nuovo simpatico, di nuovo divertente, di nuovo sboccatissimo. Perfette le coppie avversarie Seth Rogen + Rose Byrne vs. Zac Efron + Dave Franco, una vera combinazione esplosiva di comicità e ferocia (per le varie vendete che mettono in pratica).
Al di là dell'evidente natura sciocca di questa operazione commerciale, rimane il fatto che sia una commedia meno scontata del solito, davvero spassosa e che dimostra l'evidente feeling tra tutto il cast di comprimari. Io ho nuovamente, molto apprezzato.
Ps. Segnatevi la data: a maggio 2016 il sequel "Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising".

La risposta in questo "Neighbors", spassoso esempio di come anche le commedie sceme possano essere ben fatte. Perfetto per una serata di totale disinpegno all'insegna del divertimento (volgare).

MTV Movie Awards 2015: nomination e vincitori

Ogni anno vedo gli Oscar e, da bravo fedele, mi rilasso pensando: "La messa è finita, andate in pace". E invece no, proprio per niente.
L'infinita sfilza/sfilata di premi ed attori, carpet e cenoni (che in confronto quello di Natale è una passeggiata) sembra non terminare mai, non trovare una conclusione degna di essere definita tale.
Seppure gli Oscar sanciscono, di fatto, il traguardo delle premiazione di stampo più serio e rinomato, bisgona considerare, come ci tocca fare oggi - e per giunta con un leggero ritardo -, che qui è ancora tutto in gioco. Per alcuni, naturalmente.
E così, annunciate un paio di giorni fa, appaiono le nomination dei 23esimi MTV Movie Awards, ricorrenza più giocosa, ma che sancisce comunque quali siano i gusti del pubblico contemporaneo sia per produzioni commerciali che più di nicchia. E' per questo che troviamo, fianco a fianco, titoli come "Colpa delle stelle", "Guardiani della Galassia", "Cattivi vicini" (tutti a quota 7 candidature), ma anche "Whiplash" (5), "Gone Girl" (4, di cui 3 solo per la fantastica Rosamund Pike), "Boyhood" o "Foxcatcher" (3). Una sorta di par condicio cinematografica che alla fine non mi dispiace.
Conduce Amy Schumer, la cerimonia si terrà il 12 aprile al Nokia Theatre di Los Angeles.

Curioso, curiosissimo di vederlo da mesi: i primi poster li avevo visti circolare a Pasqua a New York...

Pensieri: Ultimamente la commedia americana ha preso una piega piuttosto spassosa e godibile e questo "Neighbors" ne è esempio (assieme a "22 Jump Street" e "Tutte contro lui", per citarne altri). Spiccatamente volgare ed esplicita, caciarona e fisica, eppure molto divertente.
"Cattivi vicini" è un prodotto giovane - Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, Zac Efron e Dave Franco sono tutti ragazzoni - diretto ad un target giovane cui si rivolge tramite linguaggio e luoghi comuni del caso (perfino, per assurdo, storpiando lo stesso linguaggio che mette in scena ridicolizzandolo attraverso l'uso che ne fanno i due "vecchi" della situazione Rogen e Byrne, i due genitori, per capirsi) ad un pubblico che non ricerca altro che divertimento spensierato e qualche momento di estrema follia da rievocare con gli amici. Gag come quella dell'airbag, della "mungitura umana" o del palloncino che in realtà è un profilattico sono tutte scemate tra lo stupido e il volgare, che però fanno morire dal ridere se si lascia fare a questo prodotto il suo dovere: intrattenere con superficialità. In quest'ottica, infatti, la pellicola è assolutamente riuscita.
A mio avviso, infatti, "Cattivi vicini" fa esattamente quello che promette, senza perdersi per strada (come fa, per esempio "That Awkward Moment") e, cercando svago puro, qui la soddisfazione è assicurata. La sfida Rogen-Byrne vs Efron-Franco, che in parallelo è una sfida tra giovani e "vecchi", ma anche tra responsabilità e non responsabilità, è esilarante man mano che degenera, con certe trovate vendicative che fanno morire dal ridere. La lotta senza esclusione di colpi, infatti, è la parte migliore di tutto il film, il motivo primario per cui vederlo. A dire il vero ho trovato interessante anche la questione dell'amicizia prima delle donne, della fratellanza prima dell'amore che la trama propone, topic che mi ha incuriosito sia perché le confraternite da noi non esistono, sia perché sono sempre più rare le storie che trattano la fratellanza maschile in termini così assoluti (chiaramente, perché la storia evolva, qualcosa si incrinerà). Insomma, ho gradito l'insieme.
In definitiva, quindi, "Neighbors" (o "Bad Neighbors", come l'Italia crede che si chiami - per capire cosa sto dicendo leggete QUI), mi è piaciuto e mi ha lasciato soddisfatto e devo dire che, sorprendentemente, Zac Efron sta riuscendo a ritagliarsi un suo spazio cinematografico che vada oltre il target delle minorenni ormonate che vorrebbero farselo. Non gli regalerà un Oscar, ma la strada intrapresa mi sembra buona.

Consigli: Successone al botteghino mondiale, "Cattivi vicini" èun buon esempio di commedia americana moderna, divertente e molto diretta. Per una serata in compagnia, tra risate e gag da commentare e ricordare, questo è certamente un ottimo esempio di intrattenimento facile e spensierato su cui puntare sicuro.

Italian mistakes: Neighbors & Out of the Furnace

Ormai lo sappiamo, in Italia la precisione - soprattutto quando si tratta di tradurre titoli di pellicole - lascia molto a desiderare.

Ultimo esempio in ordine cronologico è "Neighbors", che la Universal Pictures italiana rititola "Cattivi vicini", di cui però sbaglia a scrivere il titolo originale nei credits della locandina ufficiale.
Nella versione distribuita da noi del poster, infatti, si passa da "Neighbors" a "Bad Neighbours" che non è il titolo originale del film, bensì quello alternativo che la produzione ha utilizzato per alcuni mercati europei (come Regno Unito, Danimarca, Svezia).

Ma questo è niente in confronto al vero e proprio gioco all'errore che è riuscita ad istituire la Indie Pictures con la locandina del film "Il fuoco della vendetta - Out of the Furnace". Totalmente privo di riferimenti a qualsivoglia tipo di premio nella versione originale, il poster italiano è stato invece invaso da una pioggia di Oscar a caso: 2 statuette sono state conferite a Christian Bale che ha, sì, avuto due candidature, ma solo una si è di fatto tramutata in vittoria ("The Fighter"); Woody Harrelson, invece, sembrerebbe aver vinto addirittura due premi, quando in realtà è stato solamente nominato due volte ("Larry Flynt - Oltre lo scandalo", "Oltre le regole - The Messenger"), esattamente come il 'compagno di locandina' Willem Dafoe le cui credenziali, però, sono corrette. Infine viene totalmente ignorata la candidatura all'Oscar di Sam Shepard (per "Uomini veri") che, al pari di Casey Affleck, avrebbe avuto diritto a vedersela riconosciuta alla voce 'nominato'.
Insomma, un gran pasticcio che denota un maldestro lavoro di marketing pubblicitario eseguito con superficialità o inesperienza.

Film 714 - That Awkward Moment

Sembrava una commedia carina.

Pensieri: Non è che la si può definire esattamente come commedia, in quanto ci sono certi snodi della trama sinceramente anche molto tristi, né si può dire che, effettivamente, prenda di mira con successo quell'"imbarazzante momento" di cui parla il titolo. Ovvero, le premesse ci sono anche e i 3 ragazzi, che teoricamente vogliono rimanere single per evitare l'imbarazzo di dover definire qualunque tipo di relazione, in principio espongono le loro ragioni in maniera abbastanza efficace tenendo fede alle premesse. Ma basta proseguire di poco che subito la trama del film vira inaspettatamente proprio nella più inaspettata delle direzioni: sia Jason che Daniel che Mikey (rispettivamente Zac Efron, Miles Teller, Michael B. Jorda) trovano - o capiscono di avere già - la donna della loro vita. E basta, il film prosegue per questa strana.
Quindi, dove mi aspettavo di trovare toni irriverenti e dissacranti, per quanto certo non manchino, ho aggiuntivamente trovato moltissimo romanticismo e qualche tono drammatico.
Nel suo insieme "That Awkward Moment" è comunque il tipo di prodotto che mi aspettavo di vedere, ripieno di un'analisi dei protagonisti abbastanza stereotipata - ognuno ha un carattere assolutamente diverso dagli altri - nonché a tratti banale e un po' già vista (qui le donne portano i pantaloni e i ragazzi giurano "fedeltà" alla figa e alle feste, finendo nonostante i propositi d'indipendenza, per risultare i più immaturi), ma in ogni caso la buona presenza scenica del cast e la bella cornice newyorkese riescono a salvare (anzi, sviare l'attenzione dal)la trama.
E' un esperimento, quindi, riuscito a metà che ha la pecca di tradire il suo diktat fondamentale a neanche mezzora dall'inizio del film, cambiando le carte in tavola e riallestendo una storia fino a quel momento a base di amicizia testosteronica, sesso, bravate e rimorchio per trasformarla in una commedia romantica del vero amore il cui unico momento veramente esilarante è quello in cui Zac Efron si presenta con un dildo chilometrico alla festa di compleanno di Ellie/Imogen Poots. Lì si ride davvero, mentre per il resto la storia si segue senza troppe emozioni.
Ps. Zac Efron vince l'assolutamente meritato MTV Movie Award 2014 per Best Shirtless Performance.

Consigli: E' un prodotto buono nell'ottica del momento di disimpegno e distrazione. Buon cast e trio principale veramente in ottima forma, con uno Zac Efron lanciatissimo e qui solo da antipasto rispetto al super successo di questi giorni, "Neighbors" (49 milioni di dollari d'incasso al primo weekend e posizione #1 rubata a "The Amazing Spider-Man 2"). Si può vedere e farsi pure qualche risata.
