Film 2495 - The Invite

Intro: There was good buzz around this film and I was really curious to see for myself if it was worth the watch.

Thoughts: "The Invite" is a very interesting film, especially in the current cinematic landscape. And it's even more interesting that it managed to become so successful, considering I would consider this quite the niche film rather than a mainstream one. Instead, it managed to do well at the box office (on a $15 million production budget) and gather Oscar buzz this early in the year.
What caught my attention the most is how intimate this movie feels, to the point that I thought its story was taken from a play. There are only four characters, basically just one location we never get to escape, a dialogue-heavy script, and themes that are mainly ordinary and close to what would be any adult's life nowadays. Instead, this is actually the English-language remake of the 2020 Spanish film "Sentimental" by Cesc Gay.
Because of its theatrical vibe and remake essence, this film inherently reminds me of these other two: "Carnage" -- based on the play "Le Dieu du carnage" by Yasmina Reza -- and "Perfetti sconosciuti" -- in 2024 recognised as the most remade film by Guinness World Records, with productions in 24 different languages.
All three of these movies share similar qualities and themes: the confined space, limited characters and a story that revolves around couples, their relationships, struggles and secrets. Additionally, they all share a very specific tone: the story starts slowly in what would be an everyday life situation and gradually (and brutally) escalates, eventually peaking in some sort of explosive truth that shakes the couples to their core.
In this specific instance, "The Invite" leans more towards comedy than drama, which I appreciated. I especially enjoyed this because I don't think many would have expected Olivia Wilde and Penélope Cruz to be such a perfect fit for a story like this. To me, they are the true stars -- I can't call them revelations, as we all know how amazing and talented these ladies are -- of this film. It's true I'm drawn to strong female characters, but here I think they really outshine their male counterparts. Don't get me wrong, both Seth Rogen and Edward Norton do a great job, but I think the ladies really ate their parts. The sexual tension Cruz is able to bring to life between her and literally any other character is insane, and I never would have expected to see her in such a sexually charged role. On the other hand, Wilde portrays her character with such tension. There's a nervousness about her, an uneasiness that makes you feel the same way while you watch the story unfold. It's nerve-wracking, but it serves the character so well, especially opposite Cruz.
On top of a great performance, Wilde also directed the movie. This is not her first endeavour, but possibly her best one so far. I always find it commendable when a director succeeds in finding a way to tell a story that is spatially limited to a sole location. It would be so easy for the story to fail and for it to be visually presented in such a boring way that it would turn the audience away. Instead, Wilde's vision is extremely aware of the spaces and camera angles and never shies away from the actors' faces, keeping you constantly (and emotionally) engaged.
Overall, I really enjoyed "The Invite". I think it's a refreshing example of how smaller movies can feel big and engaging and entertain the hell out of you.

Worth a watch?: I really liked it. The actors are perfectly cast, the story is interesting and has enough crazy twists to keep you entertained and engaged. It's the perfect movie for a movie night that doesn't require bombastic entertainment, but rather something more adult-themed (there's a lot of sex talk indeed). If you liked "Carnage" or "Perfetti sconosciuti" (here's my personal deep dive on this unexpected Italian sensation), you can't miss this film.

Film 2487 - Neighbors

Intro: Second evening in Dingle, second movie from the couch. After a night out in town, of course.

Thoughts: I've watched this movie a bunch of times already and always find it funny. It's not a masterpiece or anything, but it's almost like a comfort watch that, at the right time, delivers exactly what I need. Similar to other films like "21 Jump Street", "22 Jump Street" or "We're the Millers".
So I guess the vibe was once again right for me, as I really enjoyed rewatching this first "Neighbors" - the sequel isn't that good - after so many years since I last saw it.
I think Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne have great chemistry together, and watching the two of them go up against the other screen duo, Zac Efron and Dave Franco, is a pleasure. My personal highlights: the airbag and milking scenes. Hilarious.
All in all, a solid comedy that still works more than 10 years later. And these days, that's quite the feat.

Awards: 3 wins at the MTV Movie + TV Awards Best Shirtless Performance (Zac Efron), Best Duo (Zac Efron, Dave Franco), and Best WTF Moment (Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne) over 7 nominations (Best Comedic Performance for Rose Byrne, Best Musical Moment, Best Kiss, Best Fight).

Film 2424 - Pillion

Intro: It took me a while to get to this review. I had the template ready for about 10 days, but couldn’t find the time, energy, or just the willingness to sit down and write it. Yeah, the peak of award season just ended, but to be fair, it was mainly because this is the last movie I watched with Yegor before our breakup and, possibly, part of me wasn’t ready to let go.
The list of new movies to review is getting longer, though, so off we go.

Thoughts: Not the gay romance I was expecting, "Pillion" was definitely an interesting watch. To me, BDSM, dom and sub—it’s all a world I don’t know much about, and it’s not a kink I have, so watching this movie was almost like analyzing a case study.
I think Alexander Skarsgård is perfectly cast and gives off the right vibe for his character, Ray. Harry Melling is a great protagonist and shows his potential here as a leading man, regardless of the genre, but I can’t deny it was a bit strange to see Harry Potter’s cousin’s ass on the big screen (Melling plays Dudley Dursley in the "Harry Potter" franchise). Anyway, the two together are the gay couple you didn’t know you needed. They make a great screen pair.
Overall, "Pillion" is bold and provocative and shines a light on a community that is rarely the subject of a movie (let alone one produced by the BBC). Not necessarily my gay romance fantasy, but I found it interesting and definitely refreshing.

Worth a watch?: "Pillion" isn't for everybody, but if it's premise interests you ("A directionless man is swept off his feet when an enigmatic, impossibly handsome biker takes him on as his submissive.", from IMDb), then it's definitely worth a watch.
Awards: 3 BAFTA nominations (Outstanding British Film, Outstanding British Debut, and Adapted Screenplay). The movie won Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival 2025 in the Un Certain Regard section.

Film 2403 - Showgirls

Intro: I heard about this movie for so long, to the point that I felt silly for never having seen it. So here we are.

Thoughts: I mean, do I see why it was panned by criticts and trashed for ages? Yes. Is it still iconic in it's own way? Absolutely.
I'll be honest, for what it is I didn't like "Showgirls", it's over the top, Elizabeth Berkle's acting is so intense - but is it really her fault? Movies have directors for a reason - and so strange to the point that it's almost impossible to take her character seriously most of the time, there are boobs everywhere, Kyle MacLachlan is absolutely miscsted, the plot is unhinged... But, knowing what we know todays, seeing how the culture has shifted and how iconic this movies has become, now that I've seen it I absolutely understand why. Also, I think Gina Gershon is so entraguing in this movie, so sexy and perfect for the role.
So yeah, "Showgirls" is a crazy ride, but what a fun one.

Worth a watch?: Definitely worth watching it at least one time. Everybody hated it at the time, aren't you curios to know why?
Awards: The movie has been nominated to the Razzie Awards in three different occasions. Originally, in 1995 it got nominated 13 times, winning in 7 categories: Worst Picture, Director, Actress (Elizabeth Berkley), Screenplay, Screen Couple (Any combination of two people (or two body parts!)), New Star (Berkley), Original Song ("Walk into the Wind"). In 1999, it was nominated for Worst Actress of the Century and Worst New Star of the Decade (both for Berkley) and it won for Worst Picture of the Decade. Lastly, in 2004 in got nominated in the category Worst "Drama" of Our First 25 Years, but lost to "Battlefield Earth".

Film 2355 - Babygirl

Intro: We were really curious to watch this movie after hearing about it so much and in such good terms. Also, we thoguht it would have played a bigger role during the awards season.

Thoughts: "Babygirl" is one of those movies that is all about sex, but not sexy or sensual. So you're watching a film about people having sex, about BDSM, sexual tension, control, but it never really gets you there. You see it, but you don't feel it. And it's a bit strange considering how much it revolves around these themes.
That said, it's not a bad movie, I actually enjoyed it enough. Nicole Kidman gives a brave performance - I like that choses to work with a female director at least once a year - and Harris Dickinson should definitely be a bigger star by now. In a way, he is the movie.
Ps. I know it's silly, but once you notice how big Nicole Kidmsna's earlobe are, you can't unsee it. For the rest of the movie.

Worth a watch?: Bob Dylan's fans should really enjoy this movie. Not my favourite biopic or musical, but still a good film. Similar titles would be "Walk the Line" and Ray". For something a bit more fast-paced, "Dreamgirls", "8 Mile", "Elvis", "Better Man", "Rocketman" or "Judy".
Awards: Nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama. Nicole Kidman won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival 2024.

Film 1661 - Rocco

Intro: Giuro, ci siamo capitati per caso per colpa di Netflix Australia...

In sintesi: presentato ADDIRITTURA al Festival del Cinema di Venezia 2016, il documentario francese su vita e opere di Rocco Siffredi è, onestamente, un prodotto difficile da digerire. Non tanto per il profilo erotico/pornografico/provocatorio (?) che la pellicola mette in scena, quanto per l'ambiguità del suo protagonista, nonché lo strano rapporto con il cugino-regista e compagno d'avventure. 
Già da tempo figura mitologica della bassa cultura italiana, sembrerebbe che questo prodotto voglia tentare per un'umanizzazione del soggetto in analisi, non fosse che il risultato finale finisca per generare l'effetto contrario: alienante, brutale e non troppo in grado di andare oltre l'argomento taboo superficiale (il porno divo e il mondo di cui fa parte), "Rocco" rimane intrappolato nella stessa rete che per primo va a creare, finendo per delineare un ritratto non esattamente edificante di Siffredi. Non che il documentario dovesse sancirne la santificazione, ma sicuramente mi aspettavo la presentazione di un profilo riabilitante piuttosto che la rappresentazione di una serie di comportamenti nei confronti dell'universo femminile (e non solo) che ho trovato degradanti nonché fuorvianti privati di una contestualizzazione che ne condanni la messa in pratica.
Ammetto che non mi sono mai interessato troppo al personaggi Siffredi, men che meno al suo profilo professionale, detto ciò l'idea che mi sono fatto da questa pellicola è che sia una persona molto sola che trae dal sesso le conferme di cui ha bisogno, nonché un uomo che mette in pratica una certa serie di comportamenti -a mio avviso inaccettabili - per il solo fatto di avere un pene più lungo della media.

E, forse ancora peggio, è più innocuo di quanto il titolo non suggerirebbe.

Film 497 - 40 anni vergine

Per una tranquilla serata all'insegna del disimpegno. Era tra le proposte silly che avevamo concordato con Licia.

Pensieri: Devo dire sinceramente che sono rimasto abbastanza deluso da questo prodotto cinematografico che sembra proporre qualcosa che in realtà non c'è. Ve lo dico subito: "40 anni vergine" è un film d'amore.
Sì, avete capito bene. Seppure il trailer e l'inizio della pellicola sembrerebbero suggerire un approccio goliardico della (disgraziata) storia del represso e frustrato verginello Andy/Steve Carell (questo ruolo gli ha lanciato la carriera), in realtà la direzione presa nel secondo tempo è smielata e poco divertente. Si predica perfino la monogamia, dato che il protagonista prima è vergine, poi si aspetta di sposarsi e da lì, chiaramente, si sottintende la fedeltà matrimoniale.
Ora, per carità, non è che mi aspettassi alti contenuti o un kolossal mozzafiato, però se nemmeno su un titolo di matrice fondamentalmente stupida mi posso più fidare... non so più cosa aspettarmi. E dire che la "factory" di Apatow solitamente garantisce un minimo di originalità.
In ogni caso c'è da aggiungere che, se non tutti apprezzeranno i contenuti della pellicola, altri non troveranno divertante, probabilmente, il tipo di comicità di Carell, figlia di una mimica facciale che la fa da padrone a sfavore di battute a effetto più immediato. E, per quanto l'attore sia bravo, ogni tanto stanca (ma c'è da dire che eravamo agli albori di una carriera mondiale di comico che è poi riuscito a trasformare in una da attore multigenere).
Insomma, in definitiva non posso definire più che carina questa pellicola, sottolineando quanto le mie aspettative più scanzonate e superficiali siano state disattese. Catherine Keener, comunque, veramente una bella donna (all'epoca 45enne)!
Ps. Buon box office mondiale: $177,378,645 (la spesa era 26 milioni).
Consigli: Riuscito solo in parte. Non è il film che ci si aspetta e questo potrebbe deludere chi ha aspettative più da commedia (anche degli equivoci e non solo delle volgarità). Di fatto si guarda senza problemi, ma una volta può bastare. Comunque meglio in compagnia.

Film 447 - Il gusto dell'anguria

Primo film in compagnia della mia compagna di corso della scuola di cinema. E non potevamo scegliere pellicola più strana...

Pensieri: I personaggi principali di questa pellicola (Hsiao-Kang e Shiang-chyi), dopo essere stati presentati nel precedente "Che ora è laggiù?" (2001), si ritrovano in questo nuovo racconto a fronteggiare un momento intenso di siccità nella città di Taipei. Con poca acqua a disposizione viene suggerito di consumare succo di anguria e, di conseguenza, il prezzo del frutto finisce per aumentare vertiginosamente. Risulta quindi assurdo (ma lo sarebbe poi anche in condizioni normali) che l'anguria stessa venga utilizzata per scopi sessuali prima e buttata dalla finestra poi, in un secondo passaggio, dal protagonista maschile.
Ma queste non sono le uniche 'stranezze' di "Tian bian yi duo yun". C'è una sola battuta nonostante i 114minuti di pellicola, molto nudo (molto diretto) e tantissima solitudine. Giganteschi condomini sempre vuoti, momenti che i protagonisti si ritagliano solo per sé stessi (come nella scena del bagno nell'acquedotto) e altri di necessaria solitudine in una condizione di degrado dovuta proprio alla mancanza di acqua (ci si lava come si riesce, spesso gli insetti infastidiscono le persone).
In tutta questa cornice si consuma una storia che non sono certo poter definire d'amore tra, appunto, i due personaggi citati già prima.
Oltre a tutto ciò, più di un intermezzo musicale si alterna ai momenti di recitazione classica e, probabilmente, avendo potuto usufruire di sottotitoli (il mandarino non è così semplice da capire...) si sarebbe potuto mettere a fuoco meglio e in maniera più significativa il messaggio del film.
Insomma, detto molto sinceramente, non ho particolarmente apprezzato questo prodotto, non fosse che sono notoriamente di gusti più commerciali, ma davvero spesso ho faticato ad accaparrarmi il senso di tutto questo lavoro artistico. Solitudine umana, impossibilità di un amore che non sia semplicemente quello fisico ed estraniazione da un mondo gigantesco ma vuoto per ogni individuo mi hanno reso "Il gusto dell'anguria" crudo e legato ad un'inevitabile nube di tristezza. Probabilmente ciò che il regista cercava di trasmettere allo spettatore, ma non posso dire che il risultato sia stato di mio gradimento.
Consigli: Per un senso di complettezza e continuità probabilmente sarebbe più snesato vedere anche il precedente "Che ora è laggiù?". Di fatto, comunque, è un film non certo leggero e, per una serie di motivi evidenti, che non sarà gradito a tutti.
