Film 2119 - Elvis

Intro: Presentato in anteprima al Festival di Cannes di quest'anno e accolto da 12 minuti consecutivi di applausi, non potevo lasciarmi scappare il ritorno al cinema dell'istrionico Baz Luhrmann!

In sintesi: mi piace Elvis Presley, ma non posso certo dire di essere un suo fan sfegato, per cui mi sono approcciato a questo film con vago timore, temendo potesse risultarmi un po' indigesto (leggere: noioso). In realtà è stato tutto il contrario.
"Elvis" parte subito in quarta, ritmato fin dall'inizio, anche quando per i primi minuti di pellicola Elvis/Austin Butler non è presente sullo schermo. Da quando compare in poi, comunque, la storia è un tour de force ininterrotto di canzoni, bagni di folla, flah dei paparazzi, abiti sgargianti, coreografie e, neanche a dirlo, le classiche movenze che hanno reso il cantante da Memphis, Tennessee, l'icona che tutti conosciamo. Insomma, praticamente ogni altro film di Baz Luhrmann... (Non proprio, ma poco ci manca.)
Devo dire che nel panorama un po' stantio del cinema recente, "Elvis" è esattamente quello che ci voleva: coloratissimo, chiassoso, kitsch, a tratti pirotecnico e follemente innamorato del suo (s)oggetto della narrazione, questo film riesce nella non facile impresa di rendere omaggio a un'icona intramontabile mettendo in scena i momenti di gloria e le battute d'arresto, le difficoltà e i lampi di genio, sempre mettendo in evidenza l'aspetto innovativo della musica di questo artista che ha non solo influenzato la storia della musica, l'ha proprio cambiata.
Questo aspetto in particolare della pellicola di Luhrmann mi ha colpito, capace di omaggiare, esaltare e al contempo mostrare efficacemente il perché e come Elvis sia riuscito a diventare uno dei tasselli più importanti della cultura pop dell'ultimo secolo.
Ad aiutare Luhrmann in questa impresa è senza dubbio la rivelazione del film Austin Butler, che qui fa letteralmente faville nel ruolo principale. Magnetico, sexy, carismatico e con un'energia sul palco pazzesca, il giovane Butler riesce nella titanica impresa non solo di rendere giustizia al personaggio che interpreta, ma di portarlo gloriosamente sulle proprie spalle dall'inizio alla fine di una pellicola della titanica durata di 2 ore e 40 minuti! Magnifico! E anche se è sicuramente un po' presto per parlare di nomination all'Oscar, si può comunque dire che il ragazzo se la meriterebbe tutta.
A dividere lo schermo con lui il sempre bravissimo Tom Hanks, qui in uno dei ruoli più antipatici della sua carriera. Nei panni del Colonello Tom Parker, il manager (schiavista) di Presley, Hanks è il vero narratore della storia e ci guida attraverso le varie fasi della vita del proprio personaggio e, più importante, quelle del nostro protagonista.
Chiude il gruppo degli attori principali Olivia DeJonge, ai miei occhi finora sconosciuta, nei panni di Priscilla Presley, ovvero la sua futura dolce metà. Francamente non l'ho trovata memorabile, ma c'è da dire che il personaggio entra in scena abbastanza tardi e comunque perde lentamente di importanza verso il finale, fornendole meno materiale su cui lavorare (anche se l'impatto emotivo sarebbe potuto essere più importante).
Con una grande colonna sonora, un montaggio sincopato e incalzante, un protagonista perfetto e quella regia di Baz Luhrmann che è sua e solo sua e nessuno potrebbe replicare, "Elvis" fa il botto e finisce per risultare una delle vere sorprese della stagione. Vedere per credere.

Vale o non vale: I biopic non sono per tutti, men che meno quelli in forma di musical. Ma l'iconico personaggio di Elvis Presley è una tentazione troppo ghiotta da lasciarsi sfuggire e il mirabolante spettacolo di luci, colori e canzoni imbastito da Baz Luhrmann è una promessa mantenuta, sopratutto grazie a un Austin Butler in stato di grazia. Quindi sì, "Elvis" è una delle pellicole del 2022 assolutamente da vedere.
