Film 2370 - Death of a Unicorn

Intro: I was really looking forward to watching this movie, especially in theaters. So we squeezed it in during our (back then) busy schedule and went to Cineworld.

Thoughts: I have to be honest, I didn't particularly like this movie. I had high expectations because I was extremely excited to see Téa Leoni on the big screen again + the trailer seemed really good and "Death of a Unicorn" seemed to have all the card to be at least a good movie. Reality is, it's not great.
As a dark comedy, it's not really funny. It's definitely extravagant, I'll give it that, but other than that there's not much else. The cast is amazing, but not necessarily used to their best potential: Jenna Ortega is playing Jenna Ortega playing a pissed (borderline, at this point) teenager, Will Poulter tries to be the comedic relief and mostly succedes but not entirely, Téa Leoni is basically playing Rosamund Pike's character in "Saltburn" and Paul Rudd is good at doing himself/Ant-Man, but when it comes to other facial expressions... there's not a lot going on.
Top that with a story that doesn't deliver what you would expect - there's a million side characters that you don't really care about but they keep on being introduced and killed, but it doesn't add anything to the story and also it's not funny - and it's more odd than fantasy black comedy, then what you have left is a little bit of disappointment.
Again, the idea has potential, but the delivery didn't thrill me.

Worth a watch?: I thought it would have been more fun, to be honest. Good cast, Téa Leoni is back and we're happy about it, but "Death of a Unicorn" should have it harder to deliver and good overall result. It's not awaful by any means, but I was expecting more or something else, even.

Film 2314 - Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Intro: Sempre in tema con Halloween ormai imminente, la settimana scorsa siamo andati al cinema a recuperare questo film prima che non lo passassero più nelle sale.

In sintesi: premesso che non ho mai visto l'originale per intero ma solo qualche spezzone qua e là negli anni - lo so, criminale - e che non avessi particolare intenzione di recuperare il sequel così a random, ammetto che tutto sommato "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" non mi è dispiaciuto.
In un periodo in cui faccio davvero fatica a digerire filmoni della durata di 2 o più ore, ammetto che il pensiero confortante di una visione rapida di circa un'oretta e mezza mi dà il conforto giusto e mi mette nel mindset perfetto ad apprezzare al meglio ciò che sto per vedere. In nquesto senso credo che il nuovo film di Tim Burton abbia beneficiato della mia adduale (in)disposizione, il tutto per un rosultato finale che ho trovato piacevole e di intrattenimento, anche se meno divertente di quanto mi aspettassi.
Di per sé si tratta di un prodotto dall'estetica chiara e precisa, con una visione d'insieme solita che traspare per tutto il tempo, anche grazie alla colonna sonora del sempre magnifico Danny Elfman. Burton fa il suo dover, anche se non credo si possa dire che si sia particolarmente impegnato a consegnare al pubblico qualcosa di indimenticabile in termini di riprese. Cast buonissimo con una Winona Ryder di fatto protagonista, anche se Catherine O'Hara ormai è Moira Rose e Jenna Ortega finisce per interpretare sempre lo stesso ruolo (per cui è perfetta, ma è pur sempre sempre lo stesso personaggio).
Ciò detto, il problema principale di "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" è il paradosso di avere troppi personaggi e, allo stesso tempo, niente da raccontare. Ci sono almeno sottotrame che si potrebbero tagliare senza che la storia ne risenta: i personaggi di Monica Bellucci e Willem Dafoe per intero + la storia d'amore tra Astrid (Ortega) e Jeremy (Arthur Conti). Ce ne sarebbero ancora molte altre, ma cito solo queste come principale esempio.
C'è davvero troppa carne al fuoco che di fatto non porta a niente, senza contare che le varie risoluzioni dell'arco narrativo dei personaggi sono talmente rapide e superficiali che il tutto risulta frettoloso e privo di tensione. Ed è un peccato, perché del potenziale ce ne sarebbe anche.
Infine, ammetto che per un film che si chiama "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" mi aspettavo che il personaggio interpretato da Michael Keaton sarebbe stato un attimo più prominente, mentre in realtà Beetlejuice c'è per neanche metà della storia.
Poi, ribadisco, il film non mi è dispiaciuto (forse perché non avevo nessuna aspettativa), però mi sa che Niamh ha riassunto meglio il senso di tutta questa operazione commerciale: una pellicola più da Netflix che per il grande schermo.

Vale o non vale: Immagino che il ritorno al cinema di Beetlejuice sia un evento non da poco per i fan, considerando che il primo film è uscito nel 1988. Sperando che ne sia valsa la pena di attendere per così tanto, per tutti gli altri che non sono necessariamente fanatici del primo titolo cult posso dire che questo sequel è un'innocua aggiunta a questa stagione cinematografica che si lascia tranquillamente vedere. Visto l'incasso al botteghino mi aspettavo un capolavoro - no - comunque un prodotto nell'insieme piacevole.

Film 2179 - Scream VI

Intro: Recuperato il precedente capitolo per mettere Ciarán in pari e rinfrescare a me la memoria, non abbiamo perso tempo e ci siamo fiondati al cinema per recuperare la nuova aggiunta al catalogo dell'orrore tenuto a battesimo da Wes Craven. (E la sala era piena!)

In sintesi: se il 1° è ormai un cult, il 4° ha quasi affossato il franchise e il 5° lo ha resuscitato con successo, cosa ci si poteva aspettare dal 6° capitolo di "Scream"? Beh, gli scenari potevano essere due: o un miracolo dell'horror oppure, più probabilmente, l'ennesima delusione (alla "Halloween Kills" e "Halloween Ends", per capirci). E, sorpresa sorpresa, il miracolo c'è stato!
Onestamente poteva essere l'ennesimo disastro, del resto questa saga aveva già dimostrato a più riprese di aver perso le "redini narrative" della storia, spesso perdendo di vista l'obbiettivo di un film di questo genere (ovvero spaventare) rispetto a tutta la meccanica che il franchise si porta dietro (#meta). "Scream VI", invece, riesce a bilanciare bene tutti gli elementi caratteristici della saga di Ghostface: c'è il film di genere che presenta e mette in discussione gli stessi elementi di cui è composto, c'è il mistero dietro l'ennesimo assassino, c'è la lunga serie di omicidi violenti e "creativi", c'è l'elemento surreale/irreale che si abbraccia con pacifica indifferenza (300 pugnalate dopo, la vittima di turno è ancora viva; l'assassino uccide qualcuno sullo sfondo senza far alcun rumore e il suo prossimo obiettivo nemmeno se ne accorge; Ghostface ha la stessa agilità e forza di un supereroe, nonché una certa dose di chiaroveggenza sapendo esattamente cosa sta per accadere, materializzandosi in appartamenti, case, teatri abbandonati... insomma, sempre un passo ai protagonisti). Il tutto per un risultato finale sorprendentemente coeso, consapevole e spassoso (chiaro, per chi apprezza il genere).
Senza dimenticare che, nel riportare in auge la saga, i nuovi due capitoli - questo in particolare - sono riusciti a stabilire le connessioni giuste con la storia originale, pur portando avanti una trama che si lascia finalmente alle spalle buona parte del bagaglio narrativo precedente. Capisco che Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) per tanti anni sia stata l'anima del progetto, però per quante volte ancora si poteva rendere interessante lo scontro tra lei e l'ennesimo fanatico di Ghostface? Diversamente da "Halloween", infatti, dove lo scontro è sempre e solo tra Laurie Strode e Michael Myers, qui la protagonista si vede perseguitata da una nemesi che non è mai la stessa, di fatto depotenziando l'epicità del franchise progetto dopo progetto. Con le premesse stabilite dalla nuova storia, invece, è la protagonista ad essere in controllo del suo destino, dovendo scegliere se abbracciare o meno la discutibile "eredità" paterna per trasformarsi lei stessa da vittima a carnefice, da Sidney Prescott a Ghostface.
La scelta viene praticamente fatta nel terzo atto di questa pellicola, il cambiamento si compie e la speranza di noi spettatori è che il prossimo episodio sappia gestire questo territorio narrativo inesplorato per la saga in maniera intelligente e sensata dal punto di vista della trama, portando avanti l'egregio lavoro fatto sin qui ed evitando di trasformare la nostra nuova eroina in una copia dell'ennesimo fan del serial killer mascherato.
Per ora, però, limitiamoci a dire che "Scream VI" è un'ottima aggiunta al catalogo del franchise, che il cast è variegato e interessante, che la mancanza di Sidney Prescott non si sente per niente e che, come sottolinea Ghostaface stesso, è assurdo che Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) non avesse ancora ricevuto una telefonata dall'ennesimo psicopatico di turno. Si chiude il cerchio, la nuova strada è tracciata e, speriamo, il prossimo capitolo sarà altrettanto capace di rinvigorire l'eredità di "Scream".

Vale o non vale: Ciao ciao Woodsboro, benvenuti a New York. La saga continua nella grande mela, si lascia Sidney Prescott alle spalle (io spero per sempre) e ritrova un vigore che non si vedeva da anni. La trama è ben architettata, tiene bene la suspence e alterna i vari omicidi col ritmo giusto, ribadendo le regole fisse del genere (e di conseguenza del franchise), pur aggiungendone alcune nuove che fanno pregustare un interessante futuro a venire.
Certamente non un film per tutti - non si sono certo risparmiati dal mostrare le scene più violente - ma un'ottima aggiunta ad un franchise che, 10 anni fa, sembrava morto e sepolto. Ma se c'è una cosa che gli horror ci hanno insegnato è che non bisogna mai dare per scontato che l'omicida sia morto per davvero... Premi: /

Intro: Con il sequel in arrivo al cinema nel giro di pochi giorni, ho voluto testare la reticenza di Ciarán per il genere e vedere se, alla fine, anche lui sarebbe diventato un fan di questa saga.

In sintesi: sarò onesto, ricordavo poco di questo reboot-nonché-quinto-capitolo-della-saga al di là di chi si nascondesse questa volta dietro la maschera, chi morisse e quelo strano caso delle allucinazioni familiari. E, ad essere ancora più onesto, nemmeno mi ero reso conto che tra le protagoniste di questo capitolo ci fosse nientemeno che la futura Wednesday Adams della famosissima serie Netflix, Jenna Ortega. Quindi, in effetti, rivedere "Scream" mi ha fatto sicuramente bene in previsione dell'uscita di "Scream VI" (che, per carità, la trama si sarebbe seguita lo stesso, ma sicuro ha aiutato avere un'idea più generale dell'accaduto).
In generale devo dire che questo nuovo "Scream" modernizzato ha fatto assolutamente colpo, il casting è azzeccato, la trama funziona, l'ossessione cinematografica continua a gonfie vele e, tutto sommato, il ritorno di Ghostface fa giustizia a quel primo capitolo che nel 1996 conquistò il mondo e in parte riscrisse le regole dell'horror (l'unico nome famoso del cast fatto fuori dopo la prima scena di apertura? Iconico).
Mi pare che questa nuova era del franchise sia cominciata con il piede giusto, rinvigorendo i principi cardine del prodotto originale, pur riuscendo a proporre elementi e personaggi nuovi in grado di dare nuova vita a un progetto che, dopo il quarto capitolo, sembrava avere esaurito le cartucce a disposizione. Sidney Prescott, di fatto, passa il testimone (per ora) e, tutto sommato, il film funziona benissimo lo stesso.

Vale o non vale: Gli spaventi, come sempre, sono praticamente inesistenti, eppure lo spettatore non rimane deluso. Il punto di "Scream" non è spaventare, la storia è sempre stata più interessata a un commento sociale e generazionale, oltre che mettere alla berlina certi cliché del genere horror. Qui è tutto ancora più enfatizzato dal fatto che questo film fa il verso al film fittizio che si ispira alla vicenda di Sidney ("Stab") che, ovviamente, non è altra che la storia raccontata nel primo "Scream". #meta
Chi cerca un film dell'orrore che faccia meno paura e più intrattenimento - inevitabile continuare a chiedersi chi sia l'assassino - ha trovato pane per i suoi denti (questo titolo quanto gli altri episodi della saga). Non importa quante volte un personaggio venga pugnalato, se qualcuno fosse creduto morto o in che modo Ghostface riesca a mettere a segno tutti i suoi delitti nelle maniere o situazioni più assurde... tutto passa in secondo piano perché in realtà la saga di "Scream" è godibile per quello che è: un prodotto del genere horror che non si prende troppo sul serio e trova sempre un modo per sorprendere lo spettatore. Intro: Avevo una serata libera e avevo letto critiche positive rispetto a questo film, così me ne sono andato al cinema.

In sintesi: mi è piaciuto? Insomma. Era quello che mi aspettavo? Per niente. Il che è necessariamente un male? No.
"X" è un horror con un'idea interessante di base - un gruppo di persone si infila nel mezzo del nulla texano per girare un film hard nella casa di un'anziana coppia che vive di fianco alla proprietà. I due signori, neanche a dirlo, non sono a conoscenza di cosa accada nella casa che hanno dato in affitto e sono, neanche a dirlo #2, due strambi dall'aspetto non esattamente incoraggiante - che però si perde in un preludio estremamente lungo (ed erotico) che confonde un po' lo spettatore quando si tratta di delineare la struttura del film. Molto spesso si ha la sensazione che la storia sia più interessata a farci vedere il dietro le quinte del filmino a luci rosse che a mettere in scena quello per cui lo spettatore ha pagato per vedere, ovvero un bagno di sangue. Quando finalmente ci si arriva, la narrazione prende la consueta piega dell'orrore che parte vagamente in sordina e poi, tutto ad un tratto, si mette in moto freneticamente. Forse si poteva tagliare un po' di preambolo e dare più spazio tra un omicidio e l'altro.
Inoltre ho trovato la motivazione dietro le "gesta" del nostro serial killer un po' troppo vaghe e abbozzate, nel senso che sì, quella necessità di essere ancora desiderabili, belli e giovani viene menzionata, anche se poi oltre a quello non c'è nulla. Quindi, se il senso era raccontare semplicemente una storia di orrore e mattanza, missione compiuta (a rilento), ma così fosse allora mi chiedo perché ci voglia così tanto alla trama per arrivarci. Altrimenti si doveva approfondire un po' di più sul movente. Ps. Troviamo Mia Goth in due ruoli qui, a voi capire quali.

Vale o non vale: Non il capolavoro che mi era stato promesso, ma certamente un slasher/horror godibile e che, tutto sommato, fa (parte) del suo dovere. Ma il perché l'assassino faccia quello che faccia - era già successo? Chi erano le altre vittime? Quando è iniziata la carneficina e cosa l'ha fatta scattare? Queste e altre domande su: "Non verrà data risposta" - e le ragioni del massacro si doveva lavorare di più. L'ambientazione anni '70 e il fortissimo accento del sud mi hanno conquistato.

In sintesi: in generale non un brutto film, ma sicuramente il sequel di "Scream" che mi aspettavo.
Talmente autoreferenziale da risultare spesso prevedibile, anche se stranamente la cosa non è necessariamente un male, questo nuovo "Scream" funziona perché ripropone quegli elementi che hanno funzionato per la pellicola originale, declinandoli in salsa moderna e rendendo omaggio all'opera di Wes Craven (anche se, diciamocelo, dei nuovi personaggi ci frega il giusto).
Si mettono di nuovo alla berlina gli stereotipi ed archetipi del genere horror, tirando in ballo quei vecchi meccanismi che hanno reso questa saga tanto famosa - quel decalogo di "regole" che stanno alla base di un prodotto cinematografico horror - e pur risultando meno inaspettati o innovativi che in "Scream" del '96, in ogni caso il risultato finale lascia soddisfatti.
Piace constatare che si siano tirati di nuovo in ballo i personaggi originali della serie non tanto per mandare in fibrillazione i fan, ma riuscendoli a contestualizzare in maniera sensata. Forse l'inizio è un po' lento fino a quanto Sidney Prescott (Campbell) e la sua gang rientrano in gioco, ma tutto sommato la storia - sorprendentemente - funziona.
