Film 2431 - Jurassic World: Rebirth

Intro: I'm in my movie era once again and lately I've been trying to catch up with all the films that I missed during last year or saved "for later" and never went back to. So here we are, giving this franchise another chance after its disappointing latest entries. But I was looking for somthing fun and easy and I thought this one could be a good candidate.

Thoughts: Is it a masterpiece? Surely not. Is it a reboot/sequel that we needed to see? Absolutely not. Is it better than the last outing of the franchise? Well, yes. But is that enough to justify “Jurassic World: Rebirth”’s existence beyond the usual corporate cash grab? Nah.
I’ll be honest: my expectations were so low that I didn’t actually mind watching this movie. That said, not minding it doesn’t mean it’s good. I hated how artificial everything feels (green screen), especially when compared to the original film, which has a tangible, “real” vibe that adds dimension and grounds the story in reality. The cast also feels completely wasted. Scarlett Johansson is a two-time Oscar nominee; Mahershala Ali is a two-time Oscar winner… and this is how their talent is used? They’re given almost nothing to do. Emotionally, there’s just one vaguely “deeper” moment they share on the boat, where they briefly allude to their past and what happened to them. And that’s it — that’s all we get from this duo. The rest is dino fights, sample collecting, and jungle survival. As for the other characters, there isn’t much to say either. The storyline involving the family on the other boat, in particular, felt fairly random.
Additionally, I didn’t particularly like this new mixed-dinosaurs idea: I don’t think it was utilized in a smart or cool way by the story, and the Distortus rex creature is too visually similar to the Alien monster. Honestly, I don’t need crazier dinosaurs — I need a good screenplay.
That said, it’s still nice to see Jonathan Bailey in another big production, and he’s hot as ever here (he actually reminds me of Stephen from the current season of “The Traitors” UK). So… yay for the gay cause?

Intro: A couple of months ago I was watching a video on YouTube about the Oscars and the youtuber said something like nobody really remembers this movie anymore as it wasn't that good anyway. I cannot disagree more.

Thoughts: "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" has had such a massive impact on my life it's hard to explain how much I care for it. Not only it inspired the nickname I use to this day, Bengiamino Bottone, but I remember being obsessed with its soundtrack - I bought the CD - and I still listen to it to this day. Not to mention that my favourite actress Cate Blanchett plays the female lead character, which adds to this movie's appeal (to met).
Rewatching it almost felt like watching it for the first time all over again, as it's been a while since my last viewing. And it was probably my first time watching it in English, so in a way it felt like I was experiencing something new.
A very poetic movie, beautifully shot and, again, Alexandre Desplat's score is so good.

In sintesi: ancora non posso credere che Michael non lo avesse mai visto prima. Io, alla mia ennesima visione, trovo sempre - se non ancora di più - che "Hidden Figures" sia un gran bel film, con un bel messaggio e ben realizzato, nonché portato sulle spalle di 3 fantastiche protagoniste che fanno un lavoro egregio: Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer e Janelle Monáe.
Grande pellicola.

Vale o non vale: Un film che riguardo sempre volentieri e riesce, tutte le volte, a mettermi di buon umore. La storia è bella (e vera) e ben raccontata, le protagoniste interagiscono tra di loro magnificamente, il resto del cast è ottimo, le musiche accompagnano alla perfezione. Insomma, per me, un titolo da recuperare.

Film 2197 - Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Intro: Pomeriggio al cinemadi qualche mese fa per recuperare una pellicola che non volevo assolutamente perdermi!

In sintesi: già il primo film era riuscito nell'intento di abbinare con successo le avventure di un giovane Spider-man alla computer grafica (molto vicina al fumetto) e con questo secondo capitolo le cose sono addirittura migliorate. Il che, visto il periodo, non è cosa assolutamente scontata.
"Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" è un ottimo sequel, probabilmente addirittura migliore dell'originale: ha un buon ritmo, è visivamente accattivante e riesce a bilanciare benissimo la propria storia tra avventura e humor, divertimento e tematiche più complesse.
Spider-man e tutte le sue versioni alternative da multiverso - qui Spider-Verse - garantiscono un ulteriore livello di esplorazione del personaggio, un aspetto che non solo favorisce la storia e lo sviluppo del proprio protagonista, ma regala anche al pubblico divertenti e (altrimenti) inimmaginabili personaggi che colorano ulteriormente il racconto.
Il tutto, mixato a una colonna sonora perfetta e un appeal visivo che raramente contraddistingue così prepotentemente un prodotto cinematografico, per un risultato finale che funziona e si lascia guardare con estremo piacere. Magari tutti i film sui supereroi dell'ultimo periodo fossero tutti così!

Vale o non vale: Ottimo ritmo, un'identità grafica potentissima e assolutamente riconoscibile (sarà un caso che il film sulle Tartarughe Ninja, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" uscito qualche settimana fa presenti le stesse caratteristiche? Io non credo...), un grande protagonista, Spider-man, che ultimamente sembra non sbagliare un colpo in termini di pellicole cinematografiche. Sicuramente questo "Across the Spider-Verse" è diverso dai film in live-action sull'Uomo ragno, eppure sembra quasi funzionare addirittura meglio. Vedere per credere.

Con le nomination annunciato in streaming il 28 luglio da Leslie Jones, Laverne Cox, Josh Gad e Tatiana Maslany, la Academy of Television Arts & Sciences si appresta a mettere in scena uno spettacolo che, di fatto, si vedrà ampiamente modificato e riveduto per forma e - spero - tempistiche.
La cerimonia per i 72esimi Primetime Emmy Awards si terrà il 20 settembre, mentre quella per le categorie tecniche (sotto il nome di Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards) si terrà il 12 e 13 settembre. Appunto, troppe categorie.

Film 1720 - Alita: Battle Angel

Intro: Ho sempre sognato di vedere anche solo da fuori il TCL Chinese Theatre di Los Angeles, luogo di culto per i cinefili di tutto il mondo. Quando l'anno scorso ho avuto la possibilità non solo di ammirarlo da fuori, ma anche di assistere effettivamente ad una proiezione, non mi sono lasciato scappare l'occasione.

In sintesi: non era importante quale film vedere, quanto essere effettivamente al Chinese Theatre che, devo dire, al suo interno si presenta magnificamente decorato. Più gigantesco teatro che sala cinematografica nel senso stretto del termine, ammetto che già da sola la location ha contribuito tantissimo alla fruizione dell'esperienza nel suo complesso, tra un dolby surround spaccatimpani e un'alta risoluzione da brividi. In quest'ottica la scelta di "Alita: Battle Angel" è stata assolutamente azzeccata, per non dire che la visione ne ha decisamente giovato; non so quanto il recuperare questo film sul computer o la tv di casa possa risultare altrettanto appagante e gratificante. Dunque, di partenza assolutamente disinteressato rispetto al titolo scelto, mi sono ritrovato catapultato nell'universo "Alita" inconsapevolmente: ma ne è valsa la pena? Assolutamente sì.
Robert Rodriguez - qui al suo film finora più commerciale - confeziona un potente blockbuster che fa uso intelligente della tecnologia messa a disposizione dagli effetti speciali visivi e sonori e porta in vita l'opera manga di Yukito Kishiro ("Gunnm" o "銃夢") in maniera divertente e dinamica, il tutto per un risultato finale che è una montagna russa di emozioni. Insomma, il film funziona molto più di quanto mi sarei potuto immaginare.
E' un peccato che la brava protagonista Rosa Salazar sia "nascosta" dietro la trasformazione digitale richiesta al suo personaggio, in ogni caso l'attrice riesce a risultare credibile anche se mai effettivamente "presente" sullo schermo. Insieme a lei ben 3 premi Oscar (Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly e Mahershala Ali che insieme fanno 5 statuette) e un produttore/sceneggiatore che di nome fa James Cameron... Tanto per dire. (Forse a lui si deve, tra l'altro, la scelta di caricare i titoli di coda grazie a una canzone pop coi fiocchi, scegliendo qui di dare spazio a Dua Lipa - sempre più sulla cresta dell'onda - con la canzone "Swan Song". Altri film estremamente commerciali di Cameron presentato canzoni ad hoc cantate da dive del pop mondiale: per "Titanic" l'intramontabile "My Heart Will Go On" di Céline Dion e per "Avatar" la canzone "I See You" di Leona Lewis).
Insomma, per quanto non conoscessi il materiale originale da cui la storia è tratta e non avessi nessuna aspettativa di sorta rispetto alla visione di "Alita: Battle Angel" - visto e considerato che la pellicola non ha esattamente sbancato il box-office americano -, devo dire che in generale il film mi è piaciuto, giocando a suo favore anche la questione della fruizione visiva, per me nuova e assolutamente avvolgente. Certo, non si tratta di un capolavoro, ma in termini di prodotto commerciale pompato di effetti speciali, a mio avviso si tratta di un titolo che fa il suo dovere. Promette e mantiene.

Hollywood fagocita e dà forma alla sua Alita sulla base del modello di Kishiro, il tutto per 2 ore "da luna park" che saranno gradite ai fan della produzione mainstream dai toni epici e cyberpunk. C'è un po' di Luc Besson come idea generale, ma con molti, molti più soldi e mezzi.

In sintesi: divertente e divertito, un film sui supereroi che ne porta in campo talmente tanti che è sinceramente difficile a tratti starci dietro. Spider-man e tutta la combricola di Spider-man dei vari mondi alternativi sono un gruppo eterogeneo di personaggi che aiuta a dare al pubblico (e agli studios) un nuovo esempio di come sia possibile combinare svariati stili e approcci al mondo dei fumetti risultando comunque vincenti. Gli elementi chiave ci sono tutti: un nemico, il percorso di formazione, avventura e azione, amore e affetti, disillusione e percorso di formazione, effetti speciali a valanga; allo stesso tempo, in questo caso, una visione e realizzazione particolarmente accattivanti e dinamiche, nonché un approccio alla storia più fresco, fanno di questo "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" un prodotto moderno e interessante, piacevolissimo da seguire. Il che si riassume perfettamente nelle parole di un anonimo votante degli Academy Awards che, l'anno scorso, disse la sua in riferimento alle preferenze da lui espresse per l'edizione 2019, asserendo che mai si sarebbe aspettato di votare a favore di una pellicola sui supereroi, su Spider-man, affinché vincesse in una qualsiasi categoria in gara. Il potere dell'animazione.

Film 1715 - Green Book

Intro: Potevo forse perdermi uno dei film più (positivamente) chiacchierati dell'anno? Mai, soprattutto perché candidato praticamente a qualunque premio che conta.

In sintesi: un bel film, di quelli che ti rimettono in sesto lo spirito, buonista a livelli estremi, recitato benissimo e, nonostante tutto questo, il miglior film del 2018? Sicuramente non il mio.
Detto questo, nonostante le altissime aspettative, "Green Book" non mi ha deluso, semplicemente mi è parso più semplice di quanto non mi sarei aspettato, quasi lineare. Probabilmente, visto il gigantesco successo ottenuto, mi immaginavo una storia più complessa, più elaborata; il che non vuol dire che si tratti di un prodotto "semplice", ma che nonostante le avversità affrontate dai protagonisti, il lieto fine che fa sentire bene e soddisfatto lo spettatore è inevitabile e la vicenda straordinaria va a parare proprio dove ti immagini. Chiaro, colpisce che sia una storia vera e non è certo mia intenzione sminuire quanto mostrato qui, dico solo che "Green Book" è stata una scelta fin troppo sicura da parte dell'Academy nel momento in cui si è trattato di fare una scelta legata alla qualità della produzione 2018.
In ogni caso ho trovato Viggo Mortensen magnifico e assolutamente meritevole di vittoria nella sua categoria - nonostante fosse più una speranza mia che una possibilità concreta -, più di quel Mahershala Ali già vincitore per un'interpretazione in "Moonlight" che tutt'oggi non mi ha minimamente colpito. Ciò detto, il racconto dell'amicizia tra Frank "Tony Lip" Vallelonga e Don Shirley andava regalata al pubblico, specialmente in un momento storico in cui intolleranza, razzismo e omofobia sono problematiche reali e preoccupanti. Il film di Peter Farrelly, infatti, ci ricorda che al di là di qualsiasi pregiudizio una persona possa nutrire, se dotata di intelligenza saprà superare il suo limite tanto da andare contro ciò in cui fermamente credeva prima, così da abbracciare il nuovo, il diverso, l'inaspettato. E questo, per quanto semplice, non può fare a meno di farci sentire bene. O quantomeno speranzosi.

Vale o non vale: Storia vera di un'amicizia che per epoca storica e persone coinvolte sembrerebbe impensabile e, invece, diventa una solida realtà. Seguiamo Tony e Don in giro per la razzista America del sud, siamo testimoni delle ingiustizie e delle cattiverie, prendiamo coscienza dell'esistenza di quel libricino verde (una guida annuale per viaggiatori prettamente afroamericani) e, nonostante tutte le avversità, abbiamo sempre la sensazione che le cose andranno per il meglio.
Un film ben fatto, una storia edificante e sicuramente coinvolgente, un titolo che è un peccato perdere. Non il mio preferito della passata stagione, ma non per questo meno meritevole del raccontare la propria storia.

Film 1323 - Moonlight

Ultimo titolo (per ora) recuperato in vista della notte degli Oscar. Al momento non ho in programma di vedere altro, anche se non escludo di lasciarmi convincere da qualche pellicola lasciata indietro. Dopo questo film, ritornato dal master, mi sono lanciato finalmente nella serata più attesa, lunga e bella dell'anno! And the Oscar goes to...

Pensieri: La vittoria di "Moonlight" come Miglior film mi ha fatto ampiamente rivedere la mia posizione di incertezza rispetto a "La La Land". I vincitori annunciati mi danno sempre un po' fastidio anche se a posteriori devo dire che, bagarre di buste sbagliate a parte, probabilmente si tratta di uno scippo bello e buono. Non voglio dire che la pellicola di Barry Jenkins non meritasse di stare in categoria, assolutamente, ma non so se quello che sta dietro alla lavorazione del musical di Chazelle sia paragonabile a ciò che si vede qui. Tutto per dire che "Moonlight" non mi ha convinto, probabilmente perché mi aspettavo qualcosa di diverso. L'ho trovato lento e non poetico, con un buon cast e una certa capacità evocativa del suo regista; non un brutto film, sicuramente non tra i miei migliori dell'anno.
Dicevo: lento. Una pellicola che si prende il suo tempo per raccontare la storia di Chiron, ragazzino di colore che vive una situazione difficile sia a casa che a scuola. Bullizzato dai compagni e non considerato dalla madre drogata, nel tempo troverà conforto in alcune figure chiave che influenzeranno il suo percorso. Una di queste è certamente Teresa, interpretata da una Janelle Monáe nuovamente presente (e nuovamente in un film con Mahershala Ali, dopo "Hidden Figures") che, nonostante il piccolo ruolo, mi è rimasta molto impressa. Brava Naomie Harris, per quanto il suo ruolo mi abbia molto ricordato quello di Mo'Nique in "Precious". Ali, invece, non mi ha lasciato esattamente senza fiato. Per carità, nessuno dice che non sia bravo, ma mi aspettavo davvero molto di più, nonché una presenza incisiva e determinante che di fatto non c'è. Bravissimi, invece, tutti e tre gli attori che interpretano Chiron in età diverse (Alex Hibbert, Ashton Sanders, Trevante Rhodes).
Insomma, di base il film non mi è piaciuto, anche se ci sono state certe scene che mi hanno colpito. Per esempio quella alla spiaggia, dove Chiron e Kevin, ancora adolescenti, hanno il loro primo rapporto e la scena al diner, quando dopo anni si incontrano di nuovo. Qui in particolare mi è piaciuto il fatto che la storia sia meno convenzionale del solito. Chiron è gay e ne è tutto il contrario. o meglio, è diverso dalla classica idea che se ne potrebbe avere. E nonostante il suo aspetto da duro, il suo essere così chiuso in se stesso e l'idea che dal di fuori uno potrebbe farsi, la storia ci racconta che il ragazzo può essere esattamente qualunque persona egli voglia e che le convenzioni, nei momenti personali o di intimità, non valgono niente. Anche lo spettatore, come Kevin, si chiede più volte cosa ne sia stato del piccolo ed insicuro Chiron delle scene iniziali, eppure subito la storia ci ricorda che, a prescindere dall'idea stereotipata che ognuno di noi ha, niente vieta a nessuno di essere quello che veramente è nella forma che più gli aggrada. Poi, va detto, lo stesso Chiron ricade nello stereotipo del ragazzo di strada il cui unico destino è quello di finire a spacciare, ma questa è un'altra storia...
Chiaramente la tematica omosessuale mi ha necessariamente riportato alla mente il capolavoro di Ang Lee "Brokeback Mountain" - scandalosamente snobbato dall'Academy nella categoria Miglior film (scippo degli scippi) - e mi sono ritrovato a pensare, a tratti, che questo film ne fosse una sorta di versione afroamericana e contemporanea. Qui però, nonostante i tempi così diversi, non c'è amore. Che è un po' quello che ho sentito mancante in tutta la storia. La fatica dell'accettarsi, il rifiuto del genitore, il background sociale sono tutti elementi che certamente determinando la persona di Chiron, ma quel primo episodio al chiaro di luna, la gentilezza della coppia che da bambino lo ha accolto, la consapevolezza di sé dovrebbero quantomeno aiutare una ricerca di affetto anche verso la propria stessa persona. Questo mi è parso mancante praticamente sempre mentre seguivo la storia, un vuoto non indifferente che tutta la qualità tecnica e non del prodotto finale non riesce a colmare e, a mio avviso, si fa ampiamente sentire.
Cuore a parte, ho trovato sensata la scelta di assegnare l'Oscar alla sceneggiatura (e mi sarei limitato a quello), nell'ottica di un trionfo epocale di "La La Land" e in mancanza di titoli prettamente competitivi. Fatico a immaginarmi "Arrival" o "Hidden Figures" vincitori in quella categoria, quindi era abbastanza intuibile che sarebbe stata favorita questa storia - ribadiamolo: neri, gay, droga - anche e se non di più in vista di un trionfo come miglior pellicola dell'anno al revival del musical. Che non c'è stato, come sappiamo.
In ogni caso, una cosa che certamente mi ha colpito di "Moonlight" è stata quella legata al montaggio. Si tagliano quasi in anticipo le scene in maniera molto netta: le musiche sembrano sempre sottolineare una sorta di continuazione, di proseguimento di ciò che si sta guardando, eppure, non importa quale canzone stia suonando, tutto viene tagliato a metà, interrotto in favore della scena successiva. E' una scelta curiosa, a volte un po' fastidiosa, che certamente rimane impressa.
Per concludere, questo migliore dell'anno non lo condivido. Storia difficile, cast in parte, risultato finale a tratti disomogeneo. Non lo considero nemmeno tra quelli che mi hanno colpito della stagione passata. Un film come ne ho visti molti, anche se l'importanza della sua vittoria ha un significato storico che va oltre i gusti personali (primo titolo a tematica LGBT e dal cast unicamente di colore a trionfare nella categoria più importante dell'Academy). Ciò detto, "Moonlight" non mi ha convinto.

Consigli: Un film tosto, non facile da digerire e certamente impegnativo anche per come è consegnato allo spettatore. Lento, con un protagonista silenzioso e tanti momenti fatti di soli sguardi, "Moonlight" è uno dei film della passata stagione di cui farsi un'opinione, anche se sono sicuro non piacerà a tutti. Io avevo determinate aspettative personali, disattese. Non è un titolo per ogni occasione e sicuramente è bene approcciarcisi preparati sia per quanto riguarda la tematica che per quanto concerne le modalità di realizzazione. Per il resto... fatevene un'idea.

Film 1320 - Hidden Figures

Altro giro, altro regalo: in arrivo per l'8 marzo in Italia, una delle pellicole che più mi aveva incuriosito di questi Oscar 2017.

Pensieri: Tra i candidati a Miglior film che quest'anno ho visto, "Hidden Figures" è, assieme a "La La Land", quello che ho preferito. In tutta sincerità ero ben disposto in partenza verso questa pellicola, sia perché le tre attrici protagoniste mi incuriosivano assieme, sia perché dal trailer sembrava che la storia potesse essere davvero interessante e il risultato finale dinamico, edificante e del tutto piacevole. E' stato così quasi per tutto.
"Hidden Figures" è tratto dall'omonimo romanzo di Margot Lee Shetterly che, a sua volta, si ispira alla vera storia delle tre donne afroamericane, dette "computer", impiegate alla NASA con differenti ruoli, tutti riconducibili ad un'indiscutibile capacità cerebrale: Katherine Goble Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan e Mary Jackson. Le tre attrici che rispettivamente le interpretano - Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe - sono una scelta di cast perfetta e da sole valgono la visione della pellicola. Anche se forse la Spencer non si meritava così tanto la nomination all'Oscar (fa lo stesso ruolo che aveva in "The Help"), insieme sono un bel gruppo affiatato e credibile per il quale non si può non finire per fare il tifo. Inoltre il resto del cast è particolarmente ricco ed è bello ritrovare Costner e la Dunst finalmente in una produzione che fa centro.
La storia che si racconta ha dell'incredibile ed è un piacere da seguire e, man mano che il racconto procede, diventa sempre più coinvolgente, tanto che non si fatica a vivere le stesse ansie e gioie provate dai protagonisti sullo schermo. La lungimiranza di certi comportamenti, la gentilezza di alcuni gesti, la cattiveria gratuita, l'assurdità dell'impostazione raziale della società dell'epoca sono tutti elementi che vanno a comporre la trama caratterizzandola e contestualizzandola, pur evitando toni tragici o facili buonismi. Questo, in particolare, è l'aspetto che più mi ha colpito: ci sono meno fronzoli del previsto. Credevo che la produzione avrebbe giocato su toni più "patetici" e, invece, per quanto si conceda non pochi momenti edificanti, non cede troppo alla voglia di strafare. Così ne esce un film bello e godibile, interessante e ben costruito intorno a tre protagoniste forti e bellissime. Unico neo, a volte si pecca di ritmo.
Al di là di questo, comunque, il vero piacere di seguire "Hidden Figures" sta nel vedere come la NASA diventi una sorta di campus epurato dalle leggi raziali (certo non è tutto rose e fiori, ma da qualche parte bisogna pur cominciare) ed evolve rapidamente esattamente come cambiano i dati da elaborare per le varie missioni. E queste ultime richiedono lo sofrzo di tutti, bianchi e neri, per poter essere portate a termine. Dunque il programma spaziale bada poco al colore della pelle e tanto ai risultati e al lavoro di squadra in vista di un traguardo che è un goal per tutti.
In un momento storico in cui l'unità e il senso di comunità e identità vacillano, è bello ricordare come bastino intelligenza e lungimiranza per superare le proprie paure per la diversità altrui.

Box Office: $195 milioni
Consigli: Non un capolavoro, ma sicuramente una pellicola piacevole da seguire, con una bella storia da raccontare e un gruppo di attori veramente ben assortito (finalmente Jim Parsons esce dal personaggio di Sheldon Cooper). In lingua originale è stata un'esperienza particolarmente soddisfacente - cercando di decodificare i vari accenti - e anche se sono sicuro che l'imminente uscita in sala e la pigrizia faranno optare per il doppiaggio, come sempre mi sento di dire che la versione originale batte quella tradotta a mani basse. Non è una presa di posizione ma un dato di fatto: il lavoro che c'è dietro i personaggi sta anche nel tono e nell'impostazione della voce. E il piacere di seguire una nuova storia sta anche nel non sentirsela raccontare sempre dalle solite quattro voci.
