Thoughts: I've always been a massive fan of the "Final Destination" franchise, especially the first movie (from sequel #3 onwards I can't really tell them apart to be honest). I still remember to this day that time my dad took me to the movies to watch it back in 2000: I was 13 and the opening sequence scared the sh*t out of me, to the point that I still wait until the day I'm packing to go somewhere before removing the tag of my previous flight from my suitcase. It's bad luck and "Final Destination" taught me that. (It's obviously a joke, but is it?)
Anyway, I obviously got really excited when they announced the new film, aiming to reboot the franchise. But with horror movies, reboots and sequels... you never know. And although the reviews were strong, I feel like you can never really 100% trust critics.
So, is "Final Destination: Bloodlines" good? It is, it's great fun and and an exhilarating ride for what it is. Meaning, it's not going to be entertaining for everyone - not only it's a horror film, it's also a very specific type of horror, there's a formula behind it and if you don't enjoy it, then there's no point.
Me being me, yeah, I quite liked it. It doesn't match the level of great camp and storytelling genius of the first movie, but it's definitely capable of delivering a very similar experience, combined with a bigger budget, better technology and a greater narrative scope. In fact, "Bloodlines" connects itself to the franchise by linking one of its most iconic characters, William Bludworth the mortician played by the late Tony Todd (to whom this movie is dedicated), to its opening disaster. Seldom this kind of fan-service is done in such a smooth way.
Overall, "Final Destination: Bloodlines" is a great addition to the franchise and a much needed injection of fresh horror to its lore. It's not a masterpiece, it doesn't reinvente the genre, but it definitely reignites the interest in the "Final Destination" IP. And I'm all here for it!

Thoughts: One of the most interesting movies I've seen so far this year: what a ride.
Although I have to admit the story takes its time to get to the juicy part, it definitely is a good ride. Yes, the first hour sees no vampire showing up whatsoever - and for a second there I was starting to think we were never getting there - but once things start to happen and everything gets in motion, it is a pleasure to watch. One of the highlights for me (watching this mvovie in Ireland) was the "Rocky Road to Dublin" musical number: very unexpected, extremely well executed and somehow perfectly fitting in the story.
The cast is solid, I'm a sucker for Michael B. Jordan (with whom I share my birthday Feb. 9, 1987) and he's great here, as usual. I wish Hollywood would give him more chances like this one and, to be honest, more awards. Wunmi Mosaku was a marvellous surprise, she's a scene stealer. I saw her before in "His House" and "Loki" and she's so magnetic you can't take your eyes off of her. Happy to see Hailee Steinfeld in something new for her, she's so talented, but she needs more projects like this one.
Overall, an amazing cinematic experience.

I hope it gets its flowers at the Oscars (but the ceremony is still so far away...).

Intro: I saw the poster and I got really curious about it. Then the red carpet, the press and the good reviews came in, which got me excited. Somehow, tho, I ended up forgetting about this film, until someone mentioned it and I finally decided to give it a go.

Thoughts: Did I enjoy it? Absolutely. Was it as revolutionary and groundbreaking as some reviews made it out to be? Not really.
"Companion" is a good sci-fi thriller with a little bit of horror and humor in it and it works well, althoigh the idea of a robot lover (the companion) that gains conciousness (or freedom) and turn agains her partner (or captor) isn't necessarily new. To be honest, it gave me "Black Mirror" vibes (which is good).
The cast is great, Sophie Thatcher does an amazing job and is a great lead - and perfect for the part - while Jack Quaid continues to do great work. I was happy to see Harvey Guillén outside his familiar Guillermo clothes ("What We Do in the Shadows").
Overall a good watch.

Thoughts: I mean, I did enjoy it overall, but the overpromising marketing campaign kinda ruined this movie for me a bit.
First, yeah I liked "Longlegs" enough, but not as much as everybody else did, so the appeal of seeing the same director returning for another hell of a ride only worked so far with me. Additionally, I'm always a bit sceptical with new projects that adapt Stephen King's body of work. They usually don't work great.
Horror movies aren't easy to make, especially these days, so kudos to "The Monkey" for offering an actual horror story. Was I blown away by the end result? No, but I did enjoy the watch. and Theo James is a good lead.

Thoughts: I think the overall idea on paper works better than the end result.
"Drop" is absolutely an OK movie, very watchable and it has it moments, but there are also a lot of slow parts and the ending - aka the reasons behind all of the shenanigans - is a bit underwhelming. Like... politics, for real?
Overall I enjoyed it, Meghann Fahy is a great lead and the film is entertaining enough. Was I expecting a bit more? Yes, but it's still fun.
Ps. Curiously enough, the main location here recalls the very similar one from the restaurant scene in "Final Destination Bloodlines")

Thoughts: I have to be honest, I didn't particularly like this movie. I had high expectations because I was extremely excited to see Téa Leoni on the big screen again + the trailer seemed really good and "Death of a Unicorn" seemed to have all the card to be at least a good movie. Reality is, it's not great.
As a dark comedy, it's not really funny. It's definitely extravagant, I'll give it that, but other than that there's not much else. The cast is amazing, but not necessarily used to their best potential: Jenna Ortega is playing Jenna Ortega playing a pissed (borderline, at this point) teenager, Will Poulter tries to be the comedic relief and mostly succedes but not entirely, Téa Leoni is basically playing Rosamund Pike's character in "Saltburn" and Paul Rudd is good at doing himself/Ant-Man, but when it comes to other facial expressions... there's not a lot going on.
Top that with a story that doesn't deliver what you would expect - there's a million side characters that you don't really care about but they keep on being introduced and killed, but it doesn't add anything to the story and also it's not funny - and it's more odd than fantasy black comedy, then what you have left is a little bit of disappointment.
Again, the idea has potential, but the delivery didn't thrill me.

Thoughts: Not exactly a masterpiece, I don't really think this movie serves as a great reboot of this franchise.
Christopher Abbott is a good lead and I liked how they tackled the sow transformation into a werewolf, especially in terms of how his senses change, but other than this. nothing really stood up with me. Especially the big plot twist regarding the creature that attacks Abbott's character: you can tell from a mile away who the creature is, so no surprise there.
A bit of a waste of Christopher Abbott's and Julia Garner's talent to be honest.

Intro: Niamh and I have a list of film we want to watch. She doesn't necessarily remembers them all, but I do. This is one of the movies on the list that we didn't manage to watch at the movies whe it came out.

Thoughts: I've been saying it for ages now regarding M. Night Shyamalan's movies: great concept, poor execution.
I think we can all agree that Shyamalan has been trying to channel that plot twist from the ending of "The Sixth Sense" ever since, it's there in all of his movies. Sometimes it works, most times it doesn't, because in order to convey the crazy unexpect turn, he has to sacrifice part of his idea, or the audience trust, or in general the believability of the story he's telling.
In this case, as i said, "Trap" has an interesting starting point: there's a serial killer on the loose, yet he's trapped in a concert venue with his daughter. No one knows he's the killer, so there's room for him to try to escape which, obviously he tries to do. And that's when the story starts to crumble.
Although on paper the idea is interesting, in reality too many elements of this story are barely glued together. As audience, you really, really have to suspend your disbelief to allow the story to continue. A concert venue for one of the biggest stars out there, there's people everywhere, police everywhere, cameras everywhere... but no one is minding the fact that this man is going wherever he wants, to the point that he ventures backstage through a trapdoor while the performance of a song is happening... like, how?!
Anyway, the story being too stretched aside, I'll admit that "Trap" isn't necessarily a bad ride. Josh Hartnett is one of the most underrated actors out there and it's sad, because he delivers a solid performance here and carries the whole movie (together with Jonathan Langdon, who's performance reminded me a bit of Lil Rel Howery in "Get Out"). Yes, everything is crazy here and barely make sense, but overall I've seen worse, especially coming from M. Night Shyamalan.

Worth a watch?: More than a horror movie, a thriller. The story doesn't always work, but it reminded me a little bit of "Smile 2", although this once isn't as good.
Lady Raven is played by Night Shyamalan's daughter Saleka and, though she doesn't have much screen time in the first part of the movie, she kinda steals the show towards the end.

Film 2349 - The Substance

Intro: I wan't sure about rewatching this movie already, but Michael really wanted to watch it and, to be fair, I couldn't say no. Because, after all, this was one of my favourite movies from last year.

Thoughts: I'm honestly so glad I rewatched this. I think the first time around "The Substance" was more an experience, rather than a film. I remembered I felt I was going through a rollercoaster during my first watch at the movies, but this time I knew what to expect and, in a way, I focused more on other aspects of this wild ride.
First, I paid more attention to Margaret Qualley's performance: she was definitely deserving of an Oscar nomination. Maybe not a win, but her role is iconic and there's no Elisabeth Sparkle without Sue. Remember: they are one.
Second, I paid more attention to the soundtrack and the visuals in general. I think "The Substance" does an amazing job at defyining itself through images and sound, not just the performances. It features a lot of ommages to other films, probably the easiest one to spot is "The Shining". Visually it's an extremely interesting movie, the colours are so bright and the music makes them feel even more "alive".
Thirdly, I reconsidered some of my previous concerns regarding the ending - there's a lot of "Carrie" in that live Christmas special - and although gruesome and gory, it really fits this story, complementing a crazy, wild ride in a way that is so unexpected as it is overwhelming at first. On a second watch, knowing what's about to happen, you focus less on the shock of what you're witnessing and more on the absurdity that is to put your life at risk to fulfill a (male) fantasy and pursue fame at all costs.

Worth a watch?: Definitely not a movie for the general crowd, but an interesting and challenging movie nonetheless. On my second watch I loved it even more: Demi Moore needs to win that Oscar now. We'll see on Sunday what happens, but after her win at SAG last Sunday, it looks like she might have the support to achieve this amazing feat. What a journey for her. #TeamDemi

Film 2343 - Nosferatu

Intro: Back from Italy after the holiday break, Niamh and I had this movie planned for as soon as we got back to Dublin.

Thoughts: I was excited to see this movie, but not as excited as Niamh was.
I wasn't exactly sure what to expect, which I think didn't make me too entusiastic about watching this movie to begin with. What excited me the most, though, was it's cast: with Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Willem Dafoe all in lead and supporting roles and none other than "It" itself Bill Skarsgård in the titular role, definitely "Nosferatu"'s star factor was playing a big role.
What hurt the chances of me liking and enjoying this movie experience, though, were two factors. Firstly, an external one: the movie theater we were in had no heating on and we ended up watching the movie wearing our jackets all buttoned up. It maybe (unintentionally) mimicked this film's atmosphere, but it wasn't at all pleasent and actually made imèatient to leave ("Nosferatu" is 132 min long...).
Secondly, I couldn't understand a single thing Bill Skarsgård says. The tone of his voice playing this character and especially the accent made impossible for me to grasp just a couple of words here and there, to the point I eventually gave up trying to understand what "Nosferatu" was saying. Which obviously made it kind of hard for me to understand what was going on with his character in general and especially with his relationship to and with Lily-Rose Depp's Ellen. To the point that I had to go and read the plot of this movie on Wikipedia to get a better sense of what I just watched.
So, maynly for these two reasons, i can't say I enjoyed watching "Nosferatu" as much as I was expecting to.
That said, it's undeniable that this movie has a clear point of view, is masterfully crafted and well acted and has a great sense of style and it's visually compelling. I particularly loved the gloomy atmosphere, the cinematography and costumes and the actor's perfromances. I think Robert Eggers once again proves that he has a really interesting point of view and his film are more and more becoming recognizable in terms of their clear style and visual, estethic and directing.
Also, I want to mention that I enjoyed Lily-Rose Depp's performance, this is the first time I see her act and she didn't disappoint (although I think this could have been another role Anya Taylor-Joy would have killed had she collaborated with Eggers once more after "The Witch" and "The Northman").

Thoughts: I enjoy the "A Quiet Place" franchise, but I'm not a fan. I watched all the movies, yes, but I never felt the urge to re-watch them, for example. With that in mind, I decided it was time to give this new oting a go, since it was successful and, I remember, well liked by critics and viewers alike.
"A Quiet Place: Day One" is a well crafted, entertaining movie, similar enough to the previous two chapters of this sage, yet different enough to captivate its new audience. Which is obviously a smart move.
What was even smarter, though, was casting Lupita Nyong'o in the lead role: not only she's a great actress, but also a great horror actress as she proved already in Jordan Peele's "Us". Although her character isn't the easiest one to root for, Nyong'o's talent is undeniable and shines once again in this movie.
Other supporting performances by Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff and Djimon Hounsou are perfectly fine and serve the movie well, especially considering this is the closest it gets to a modern silent movie, so being able to actually act is essential.
An overall well made movie, especially considering it's a prequel, but also serves as a spin-off and it's the third outing of the series. I'm surprised it didn't get an Oscar nomination in the Best Sound category, but I guess it was hard to beat "Emila Pérez"...

Worth a watch?: Definitely a good horror movie, unique in its genre as there's barely any dialogue and the story is carried by the actors' performances (which are good). If you enjoyed the previous two movies, then this one can't be missed.

Film 2325 - Heretic

Intro: Appena visto il poster e poi guardato il trailer, ho capito subito che volevo vedere questo film.

In sintesi: a quasi nessuno dei miei amici è piaciuto, ma a me devo dire che "Heretic" ha soddisfatto. Forse non l'horror/thriller intenso che mi aspettavo, ma comunque un interessante esperimento cinematografico che tenta di mescolare insieme paura e un discorso più ampio sulla religione.
Ribadisco, non esattamente ciò che ci si aspetterebbe da un titolo come questo, specialmente perché fortemente pubblicizzato come horror, per cui durante la visione bisogna un attimo ricalibrare le aspettative. E mi rendo anche conto che un filosofeggiare più o meno "hard core" relativamente a religione, fede, chiesa e compagnia bella non sia esattamente una tematica per tutti, quindi capisco perché alcuni potrebbero rimanere un po' delusi dal risultato finale.
Una volta che ho fatto pace con la mia idea di come sarebbe stato questo film vs quello che ho effettivamente visto, io ho trovato il tutto più che intrigante. Tutta la prima parte nella casa è carica di suspense, fino a quando le due ragazze non scelgono per quale porta avventurarsi. Forse è lì che, personalmente, avrei preferito la storia prendesse una strada un po' diversa e che la parte del "labirinto" continuasse, soprattutto dopo che viene addirittura tirato in ballo il gioco del Monopoli (perché a quel punto ho pensato: bene, adesso verranno spiegate le regole del gioco che, in qualche modo, centreranno con il gioco da tavola... E invece no).
A parte questo, comunque, trovo che "Heretic" sia una pellicola interessante, nonché un prodotto sufficientemente originale. Sicuramente a elevare il tutto rispetto alla miriade di titoli più o meno simili c'è il cast: ottime interpretazioni delle due Sophie Thatcher e Chloe East ma, neanche a dirlo, la scena la ruba uno Hugh Grant in magnifica forma che, da solo, vale mezzo film.

Vale o non vale: Alcuni aspetti della trama mi hanno ricordato il "Don't Breathe" di Fede Álvarez, anche se questo film si concentra principalmente su suspense e un dialogo teologico estremamente interessante anche e soprattutto per il contesto in cui è presentato (un horror/thriller destinato al pubblico generalista). Non il classico film di paura, ma un esperimento cinematografico che, secondo me, vale la pena di recuperare.

Intro: Halloween ormai alle spalle, ma i cinema pullulano di titoli horror. Il che per me è sembra una gioia.

In sintesi: avevo trovato il primo film inquietante, anche se onestamente non ricordo bene il finale (il che per me è strano per un horror). In ogni caso ero supercurioso di vedere questo secondo capitolo e capire come avrebbe proseguito la storia.
La verità è che la storia non prosegue, ma cambia completamente: tranne Kyle Gallner, nessuno degli attori del primo "Smile" torna per questo "Smile 2", ma sceneggiatura e regia sono sempre firmate da Parker Finn, il che garantisce comunque una certa continuità.
Rispetto al titolo precedente, questa si prende un sacco di tempo a "costruire" la scena: Skye Riley (Naomi Scott) è una famosa popstar che, dopo un tremendo incidente in macchina, sta per tornare sulle scene con un tour per rilanciare la propria carriera e immagine (adesso che è sobria). Tutto abbastanza normale, fino a quando (un po' di *SPOILER*), nella speranza di procacciarsi qualche antidolorifico, Skye viene in contatto con Lewis che, neanche a dirlo, le si suicida davanti mentre si sfracella il cranio sorridendo. Da qui in avanti, ovviamente, andrà tutto a rotoli.
Per essere il sequel di un titolo originale più aderente ai classici toni e temi dell'orrore, devo ammetere che questo "Smile 2" ce la mette tutta per costruire una realtà che vada oltre i soliti cliché. La storia della protagonista è davvero ben delineata e si impara a conoscere Skye man mano che il racconto procede, finendo inevitabilmente per tifare per lei man mano che la narrazione procede. Il punto è che, però, a mio avviso tutta questa dovizia di dettagli toglie un po' di divertimento al risultato finale.
Premesso che "Smile 2" è un prodotto horror ben riuscito e, per essere un sequel, è sorprendentemente ben costruito, va comunque detto che per arrivare alla parte che lo spettatore è lì per vedere ci vuole davvero un sacco di tempo. Il racconto poi ingrana e la storia di Skye diventa un tour de force emotivo, specialmente dalla scena dell'ospedale in poi, però avrei gradito che si arrivasse all'azione vera e propria con più anticipo.
A parte questo, come dicevo, il sequel di "Smile" è un prodotto di qualità che non fa rimpiangere l'originale. Naomi Scott (in particolare) e Rosemarie DeWitt (a cui avrebbero dovuto licenziare la parrucchiera) danno due ottime performance e i vari colpi di scena della storia funzionano.

In sintesi: ricordavo quanto grafico e violento fosse il precedente remake dell'originale "Evil Dead" che avevo visto anni fa al cinema, quindi onestamente non mi aspettavo nulla di diverso da questo "Evil Dead Rise". E avevo ragione.
Possessioni demoniache, litri e litri di sangue, arti mozzati e compagnia bella, il film di Lee Cronin di certo non si sottrae in termini di adesione al genere horror. L'atmosfera è perfettamente inquietante al pari della performance della protagonista Lily Sullivan, che qui davvero non si risparmia.
È una montagna russa di emozioni, ma funziona molto bene.
Ps. Forse avrei fatto meglio a non vederlo da solo, in camera mia, al buio, anche se le circostanze hanno certamente reso l'esperienza più... coinvolgente!

In sintesi: ho iniziato questo film senza sapere che fosse direttamente collegato a "Rosemary's Baby". Verso metà della visione, andando a curiosare su internet, ho poi scoperto che si trattasse del prequel ufficiale del famosissimo film di Polanski e tutto ha cominciato ad avere un senso (a partire dal poster).
Le atmosfere sono simili e ci sono sufficienti rimandi alla pellicola originale, anche se in generale "Apartment 7A" mi pare riesca sufficientemente a distinguersi (a parte il titolo, che trovo veramente poco fantasioso). In particolare ho apprezzato la sequenza di ballo ispirata alla Hollywood dei grandi musical del passato che qui, immancabilmente essendo questo un horror, cela tutt'altro significato.
Julia Garner è un'ottima protagonista, mentre Dianne Wiest si dimostra (al solito) magnifica comprimaria. Onestamente, un piacere anche ritrovare Jim Sturgess che da troppo tempo non ritrovavo in qualche progetto.
Non un prodotto perfetto e, certamente, era impossibile bissare l'impareggiabile originale, però il film funziona abbastanza bene quando si entra nel vivo dell'azione (ci si mette un po', però).
Anche se solo disponibile in streaming, ho trovato curioso che la produzione del film non abbia pubblicizzato di più e meglio un progetto di così alto rilievo, considerato che "Rosemary's Baby" è ancora oggi ritenuto uno dei migliori horror della storia del cinema.
Ps. Il palazzo usato nel film mi ha ricordato tantissimo l'Arconia (in realtà The Belnord, NY) di "Only Murders in the Building", anche se la location usata per le riprese, scopro da internet, è stata l'edificio The Dakota di New York.

Visivamente ed esteticamente presenta uno suo stile ben definito, il cast è ottimo e l'atmosfera è quella giusta. Non iconico quanto l'originale, certo, ma si lascia guardare.

In sintesi: ho trovato questo film per caso. Non ne avevo mai sentito parlare prima, non sapevo chi vi recitasse e di cosa parlasse la trama. Mi sono bastati titolo e poster per essere immediatamente intrigato.
"Late Night with the Devil" è un esperimento interessante. Il primo atto del racconto è tutta esposizione pure a cui, tra l'altro, bisogna prestare grande attenzione perché alcuni dettagli rilevanti per la storia sono rivelati già qui. Poi si procede con il set-up del film stesso: show televisivo con presentatore famoso ma in declino, gli ospiti, le interviste, il pubblico che interagisce. Ci sono persino i break commerciali in cui viene dato uno scorcio del dietro le quinte, nonché certi altri elementi narrativi importanti. Poi, ovviamente, il tutto si complica quando due degli ospiti - una ragazzina posseduta e la dottoress che l'ha in cura - si prestano alla richiesta di presentatore e pubblico in sala e si mettono in contatto con il demone che vive nel corpo della ragazza.
Come dicevo, "Late Night with the Devil" è un titolo interessante perché risulta più quasi come un esperimento che come un film vero e proprio. Per la maggior parte del tempo segue le regole del programma televisivo più che della pellicola cinematografica. Al contempo, contrariamente alle regole televisive, anche durante le pause per la pubblicità, la narrazione continua indisturbata in quanto noi del pubblico (del film, non della trasmissione) possiamo assistere al dietro le quinte del fuori onda.
In generale il film mi è piaciuto e l'ho trovato una boccata d'aria fresca rispetto alla solita tipologia di pellicola horror a cui siamo abituati. Forse l'unico aspetto un filo traballante sono gli effetti speciali, non sempre all'altezza. David Dastmalchian è un'ottimo protagonista.

In sintesi: non sono mai stato particolarmente fan di questo franchise, anche se nel tempo ho recuperato alcuni titoli connessi alla serie, il più recente giusto quest'anno. Vedere l'originale è stato sicuramente interessante e mi ha permesso di mettere insieme alcuni pezzi del puzzle che, a posteriori, adesso hanno molto più senso.
Premesso che "The Omen" non mi è dispiaciuto, il fatto di conoscere già parti della storia mi ha un po' rovinato la visione perché, inevitabilmente, sapevo dove si sarebbe andato a parare. Qualcuno potrebbe anche dire che, essendo un titolo degli anni '70, sarei comunque stato in grado di anticipare alcuni dei colpi di scena, ma tant'è.
In ogni caso, gli horror in generale mi piacciono sempre e sicuramente questa pellicola ha il suo posto d'onore tra quelle che hanno portato alta la bandiera del genere. Per i miei gusti da spettatore odierno il film in generale è un po' lento, però tutto sommato davvero nessuna critica. Ho trovato anche molto interessante tutto il lavoro fatto con gli animali (il che deve aver richiesto un sacco di preparazione) e con gli effetti speciali.

Premi: Candidato a 2 premi Oscar per Miglior canzone originale ("Ave Satani") e colonna sonora, il film ha vinto per quest'ultima. 1 nomination ai BAFTA per la Miglior attrice non protagonista (Billie Whitelaw) e 1 nomination ai Golden Globe per Harvey Spencer Stephens (Miglior attore esordiente). La colonna è stata candidata al Grammy per Best Album of Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or Television Special.

Intro: Secondo film del sabato sera casalingo salotto con proiettore. In realtà avevo in programma di recuperare un'altra pellicola, ma dato che non si scaricava, ho optato per l'opzione più semplice: Netflix.

In sintesi: ammetto che fossi un po' restio a scegliere questo film all'inizio: non solo si tratta di un prodotto di Netflix (si sa che i loro film sono terribili), ma per di più in francese, il che avrebbe comportato il dover seguire tramite sottotitoli. D'altro canto, però, adoro i film con squali assassini che sembrano intenzionati a voler decimare la razza umana, per cui alla fine mi sono deciso. E ho fatto bene.
Per quanto "Sous la Seine" non si certo "Lo squalo", devo comunque ammettere che la visione non mi sia per niente dispiaciuta. Mi ci è voluto un attimo per risintonizzare l'orecchio sul francese (parlano veramente veloci), ma una volta abituato non ho più avuto problemi, anche perché, diciamocelo pure, non è che la storia sia poi troppo complessa da seguire.
Non troppo complessa, comunque, non vuol dire semplice. Succedono un sacco di cose in questa storia, infatti, il che è abbastanza inusuale per un prodotto di questo genere. Di solito o il racconto non ha niente di nuovo da dire, oppure la trama è talmente farcita di elementi, che il risultato finale è un'accozzaglia informe difficile da digerire. Qui mi pare si sia trovato il giusto equilibrio.
La storia è assurda tanto quanto lo può sembrare ad una prima occhiata: uno squalo bianco che si "trasferisce" nella Senna per mettere al mondo una colonia di altri squali bianchi, il tutto per culminare in una frenesia di spuntini per pescioloni affamati durante una competizione di triathlon in previsioni delle Olimpiadi di Parigi 2024. Insomma, c'è proprio un po' di tutto in questo "Under Paris".
Per quanto, appunto, ampiamente ancorato all'universo dell'improbabile, il film riesce in ogni caso a presentare un mondo sufficientemente credibile e radicato nella realtà. La sempre ottima Bérénice Bejo - la stessa di "The Artist", ruolo per cui fu candidata all'Oscar come Miglior attrice non protagonista - sostiene alla grande il film, tra l'altro in compagnia di un Nassim Lyes davvero niente male. Gli effetti speciali non sono perfetti, ma funzionali e le scene d'azione sono ben girate, specialmente quelle nelle catacombe e della gara. Il finale deraglia un po' nell'assurdo e, ammetto, se non avessi letto il riassunto su Wikipedia avrei faticato a mettere insieme i pezzi del cosa sta succedendo e perché, ma a parte questo "Under Paris" funziona senza intoppi.
Una piacevole sorpresa di Halloween!

In sintesi: qui in Irlanda il film è passato al cinema, ma non sono riuscito a vederlo, così l'ho recuperato in streaming. Non avevo la minima idea di cosa parlasse, tanto che non sapevo nemmeno il titolo e ho faticato a trovarlo online (la mia ricerca su Google è stata "film horror Salem"...). Siccome ricordavo il nome della città citato nel titolo, ero anche abbastabza sicuro che la storia fosse ambientata a Salem, Massachusetts e, dato che tra un paio di settimane sarò proprio a Salem, ho pensato che questa coincidenza fosse motivo sufficiente per recuperare questo titolo.
Diciamocelo subito: "Salem's Lot" non è ambientato a Salem. Lo ammetto, lì per lì sono rimasto un po' deluso perché a quel punto voleva dire che non si trattasse di una storia su streghe e persecuzioni, un po' quello che in realtà volevo (o mi aspettavo di) vedere. Ancora più sorprendente per me che mi aspettavo magie e pozioni, è stato scoprire che si trattasse di un film sui vampiri!
Passato lo shock iniziale, ulteriormente incrementato dallo scoprire che questa storia fosse tratta dal secondo romanzo nientemeno che di Stephen King, devo dire che questa pellicola mi ha soddisfatto. L'atmosfera è creata alla perfezione, buoni gli effetti speciali e la colonna sonora riesce a creare tensione e suspense senza mai esagerare o appesantire i toni; ottima la fotografia, davvero in grado di costruire un universo esteticamente coeso e particolarmente affascinante, nonché misterioso.
La cosa che forse più mi ha colpito di questo "Salem's Lot" è che il racconto non parte per niente bene: il primo atto è frettoloso e quelli che sembrano i protagonisti, di fatto o muoiono o vengono trasformati. C'è una gran confusione e tutta quella serie di fatti che andrà a costituire le basi della storia si svolge con una rapidità lascia disorientati.
Una volta stabilito che ci sono i vampiri - nessuno sembra particolarmente urbato dalla notizia, nel senso che tutti lo prendono come un dato di fatto quasi assodato, il che mi ha fatto quasi sorridere - la storia ingrana e mette a segno un colpo dopo l'altro: nessuno è al sicuro, l'antagonista è misterioso e terrificante (anche grazie al fatto che non ci viene spiegato chi sia e perché faccia quello che sta facendo), la città si sta trasformando in un covo di vampiri e i pochi rimasti non hanno molto tempo per capire come risolvere la situazione. Quando tutto sembra perduto, poi, una buonissima scena finale ambientata in un drive-in regala l'ultima corsa contro il tempo che conclude a dovere il racconto.
Onestamente, non sapendo cosa aspettarmi una volta capito che avevo completamente frainteso le premesse del film, e una volta superato l'impaccio inziale, devo dire che "Salem's Lot" è stato un'inaspettata buona scelta.

In sintesi: premesso che non ho mai visto l'originale per intero ma solo qualche spezzone qua e là negli anni - lo so, criminale - e che non avessi particolare intenzione di recuperare il sequel così a random, ammetto che tutto sommato "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" non mi è dispiaciuto.
In un periodo in cui faccio davvero fatica a digerire filmoni della durata di 2 o più ore, ammetto che il pensiero confortante di una visione rapida di circa un'oretta e mezza mi dà il conforto giusto e mi mette nel mindset perfetto ad apprezzare al meglio ciò che sto per vedere. In nquesto senso credo che il nuovo film di Tim Burton abbia beneficiato della mia adduale (in)disposizione, il tutto per un rosultato finale che ho trovato piacevole e di intrattenimento, anche se meno divertente di quanto mi aspettassi.
Di per sé si tratta di un prodotto dall'estetica chiara e precisa, con una visione d'insieme solita che traspare per tutto il tempo, anche grazie alla colonna sonora del sempre magnifico Danny Elfman. Burton fa il suo dover, anche se non credo si possa dire che si sia particolarmente impegnato a consegnare al pubblico qualcosa di indimenticabile in termini di riprese. Cast buonissimo con una Winona Ryder di fatto protagonista, anche se Catherine O'Hara ormai è Moira Rose e Jenna Ortega finisce per interpretare sempre lo stesso ruolo (per cui è perfetta, ma è pur sempre sempre lo stesso personaggio).
Ciò detto, il problema principale di "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" è il paradosso di avere troppi personaggi e, allo stesso tempo, niente da raccontare. Ci sono almeno sottotrame che si potrebbero tagliare senza che la storia ne risenta: i personaggi di Monica Bellucci e Willem Dafoe per intero + la storia d'amore tra Astrid (Ortega) e Jeremy (Arthur Conti). Ce ne sarebbero ancora molte altre, ma cito solo queste come principale esempio.
C'è davvero troppa carne al fuoco che di fatto non porta a niente, senza contare che le varie risoluzioni dell'arco narrativo dei personaggi sono talmente rapide e superficiali che il tutto risulta frettoloso e privo di tensione. Ed è un peccato, perché del potenziale ce ne sarebbe anche.
Infine, ammetto che per un film che si chiama "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" mi aspettavo che il personaggio interpretato da Michael Keaton sarebbe stato un attimo più prominente, mentre in realtà Beetlejuice c'è per neanche metà della storia.
Poi, ribadisco, il film non mi è dispiaciuto (forse perché non avevo nessuna aspettativa), però mi sa che Niamh ha riassunto meglio il senso di tutta questa operazione commerciale: una pellicola più da Netflix che per il grande schermo.

Sperando che ne sia valsa la pena di attendere per così tanto, per tutti gli altri che non sono necessariamente fanatici del primo titolo cult posso dire che questo sequel è un'innocua aggiunta a questa stagione cinematografica che si lascia tranquillamente vedere. Visto l'incasso al botteghino mi aspettavo un capolavoro - no - comunque un prodotto nell'insieme piacevole.
