Thoughts: I'll be honest here, I was expecting great things and i think by doing that I shut myself in the foot.
The cast is great, but I really struggle to follow the story as a) most of the time I had no clue what they were talking about and b) because I couldn't follow the story properly, I started to get distracted.
So, because of this, I don't really have much to say about "Black Bag". I think Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender are great leads (and a pretty damn good looking couple) and it was really nice to see Naomie Harris and Pierce Brosnan once again. Regé-Jean Page feels like the "baby" of the group against all these other A-listers, but he holds his own.
All in all, I was definitely expecting something else (and more engaging).

Intro: A couple of months ago I was watching a video on YouTube about the Oscars and the youtuber said something like nobody really remembers this movie anymore as it wasn't that good anyway. I cannot disagree more.

Thoughts: "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" has had such a massive impact on my life it's hard to explain how much I care for it. Not only it inspired the nickname I use to this day, Bengiamino Bottone, but I remember being obsessed with its soundtrack - I bought the CD - and I still listen to it to this day. Not to mention that my favourite actress Cate Blanchett plays the female lead character, which adds to this movie's appeal (to met).
Rewatching it almost felt like watching it for the first time all over again, as it's been a while since my last viewing. And it was probably my first time watching it in English, so in a way it felt like I was experiencing something new.
A very poetic movie, beautifully shot and, again, Alexandre Desplat's score is so good.

Film 2274 - The Talented Mr. Ripley

Intro: Prima ancora che uscisse la nuova serie di Netflix (a dire il vero nemmeno sapevo che fosse stata realizzata), una sera ho rivisto questo pellicola.

In sintesi: a differenza di "Ripley" che non sono riuscito a finire, non ho avuto alcun problema a vedere "The Talented Mr. Ripley" tutto d'un fiato.
Iconico ensemble di attori - con un Matt Damon che definire in forma è dire poco - e qualche momento nostrano che spicca (dico solo: Fiorello che duetta con Damon e Jude Law, momento per il quale i 3 sono stati nominati agli MTV Movie + TV Awards per Best Musical Performance), location bellissime e un stile che, in generale, non manca di farsi sentire, il film di Minghella non è perfetto, ma sicuramente riesce a lasciare il segno. L'intrigante quanto inquietante storia di Patricia Highsmith, poi, fa il resto.

Vale o non vale: Il film che forse più di tutti racchiude l'essenza dell'era Gwyneth Paltrow, il più simile in termini di glamour e stile alla realtà che ha contraddistinto - almeno attraverso la lente dei media - quel momento che è stato il picco mediatico e più iconico dell'attrice.
In una sorta di dolce vita deviata, Ripley inquieta e seduce, spaventa e affascina e, soprendentemente, Matt Damon non delude nel ruolo di protagonista, anche aiutato da un cast di tutto rispetto e, specialmente, grazie alla sua contrapposizione con Jude Law, qui più che mai sexy ed invitante. Vedere per credere.

Film 2214 - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Intro: Eventone che non mi potevo perdere: la riedizione al cinema di uno dei miei film preferiti in assoluto in occasione dei 20 anni di anniversario dall'uscita.

In sintesi: anche se ero consapevole che si trattasse della versione estesa del film - quella che avevo visto solo una volta nel comfort di casa mia dopo aver comprato i dvd - non avevo considerato che la versione estesa di un film di per sé già lungo 201 minuti avrebbe significato l'uscita dalla sala ad un'ora assurda... Di fatti "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" in versione estesa dura nientemeno che 251 minuti, ovvero più di 4 ore. Però poi va detta la verità: il film non mi ha stancato neanche per un minuto.
Come sempre, infatti, la storia mi ha tenuto letteralmente incollato allo schermo e, anzi, mi ha fatto estremamente piacere rivedere quelle scene eliminate che quasi non ricordavo nemmeno più (a parte quelle con Saruman/Christopher Lee, che avrei preferito fosse inclusa anche nella versione originale della pellicola per dare un senso di chiusura all'arco narrativo del personaggio).
Insomma, per me è sempre bello trovare un momento per tornare nella Terra di Mezzo e, in particolare in questo caso, ho davvero apprezzato tantissimo la possibilità di recuperare nuovamente questo meraviglioso pezzo della storia del cinema moderno che, anche a 20 anni di distanza, funziona ancora meravigliosamente. Ormai un classico.

Detto questo, se c'è un film per cui valga la pena dare una chance alla versione estesa, questo è sicuramente "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King".

Film 2168 - Tár

Intro: Cate Blanchett esce al cinema con un nuovo film e io, da bravo discepolo, corro al volo.

In sintesi: avevo gigantesceh aspettative per questa pellicola per due semplici moditivi: la pioggia di critiche positive e a tratti entusiaste e, manco a dirlo, Cate Blanchett.
Per quanto riguarda l'inarrivabile attrice australiana, inutile dire che praticamente il film vale anche solo per lei. Dico praticamente perché in realtà gli altri elementi positivi di questo "Tár" ci sono, ovvero una bellissima fotografia, musiche molto interssanti di Hildur Guðnadóttir e una bravissima Nina Hoss che fa la parte della compagna del genio, silenziosa e quasi invisibile, eppure sempre presente anche se solo sullo sfondo, impossibile da dimenticare. Un'interpretazione che sembra scontata, ma è l'opposto.
Dicevamo, Cate Blanchett. Splendida. Camaleontica in maniera impressionante, anche se qui quasi ho faticato a capirne il motivo - sarà questa componente molto mascolina di Lydia Tár, per quando non venga mai a mancare l'elemento femminile. Questa sua ennesima prova cinematografica decisamente non è il suo film che preferisco, eppure ritrovare Blanchett sul grande schermo è stato un vero e proprio piacere, dopo una capatina televisiva molto interessante ("Mrs. America"), un titolo che non sono neanche riuscito a finire ("Nightmare Alley") e un altro simpatico quanto sopra le righe ("Don't Look Up"). Diciamo che per quanto si sia tenuta occupata, nessuno dei titoli in cui è stata coinvolta di recente mi aveva conquistato. Nemmeno "Tár" a dire il vero, però almeno qui la ritroviamo quale vera protagonista di un flm evento come non accadeva dai tempi di "Ocean's Eight" e "Thor: Ragnarok" e, diciamocelo, il talento dell'attrice australiana merita di essere messo al centro della storia. Todd Field fa proprio questo e fa centro.
Ora, l'altro motivo che mi ha spinto a vedere questa pellicola: la critica. Pur sapendo che in odore di Oscar le recensioni che girano sono quantomeno altisonanti, diciamo che pure io mi fossi fatto prendere dall'entusiasmo generale. Tra chi parlava del terzo Oscar di Kate, chi elogiava la sceneggiatura di Field e chi l'opera in generale, diciamo che sono entrato in sala con grandi speranze. Che, alla fine, non si sono rivelate totalmente disilluse, però un po' disattese sì. "Tár" è un film lungo (158 minuti), lento e che regala tutto un preambolo sulla musica classica che a) non ho capito (sia perché di musica classica mi intendo pochissimo, sia perché certi concetti così sèecifici spiegati in inglese proprio non li ho afferrati) e b) ho trovato francamente un po' fine a se stesso, il tutto per una storia che crea perfettamente i fantasmi della sua protagonista, il senso di soffocamento, lo scivolamento verso l'inesorabile caduta, però ci arriva con una lentezza che a volte sa quasi di immobilità, che alla lunga stanca.
Lo ammetto, sono uscito da cinema un po' fiaccato da un'esperienza visivamente stimolante, musicalmente interessante, ma narrativamente a tratti un po' impegnativa.

Vale o non vale: Film non facile, sicuramente non per il pubblico generico, "Tár" è il ritorno in pompa magna che si meritva Cate Blanchett dopo anni di ottimo lavoro, anche se di recente non esattamente memorabile. Con questa performance l'attrice ci ricorda perché ad oggi sia una delle più grandi attrici in circolazione. Lei meravigliosa, il film non lo rivedrei (anche se presenta spunti interessanti e atmosfere a tratti da horror).
Premi: Candidato a 6 Oscar per Miglior film, regia, attrice protagonista (Blanchett), sceneggiatura originale, fotografia e montaggio. In sintesi: tra chi lo ha detestato e chi lo ha amato, mi sento di dire che io questo "Don't Look Up" l'ho trovato più divertente del previsto. Tragicamente divertente.
Segnato da un cast pazzesco capitanato da 5 premi Oscar e una trama che mette alla berlina non pochi aspetti della contemporeneità, l'ultimo di film di Adam McKay rappresenta la quintessenza della cinematografia del regista e sceneggiatore: una marea di personaggi di cui molti al limite dell'assurdo, una sovrabbondanza di sottotrame di cui si fa fatica a tenere il conto, uno stile tagliente a tratti sopra le righe. In più, in questo caso, il focus su una vicenda che ha certamente dell'incredibile - cosa succederebbe se una cometa stesse per schiantarsi sulla terra? - anche se per niente impensabile, specialmente nel modo in cui McKay decide di ritrarre la società e i suoi modi di confrontarsi con l'imminente catastrofe. Il finale prevede un momento alla "Melancholia" e una scena post titoli esilarante e senza veli (da non perdere).
Poi sì, bisogna ammettere che "Don't Look Up" sia un po' lunghino (2 ore e 18 minuti) e vista la miriade di storie raccontate a volte si possa percepire più "corposo" di quanto non lo sia nella realtà, comunque tutto sommato se se ne apprezza l'irona disarmante e ci si concentra sulla magica performance di DiCaprio e l'irresistibile Meryl Streep versione preseidente americano politicamente scorretta, ci si accorge che questa pellicola ha molto da dire e non poco su cui far ragionare. Ps. Ariana Grande e Kid Cudi - entrambi nel cast del film - cantano la canzone portante del film, "Just Look Up", che è uno spasso da ascoltare parol(acci)a per parol(acci)a.

Forse molti si aspettavano una pellicola più leggera (o superficiale) dal momento che veniva proposta direttamente nel catalogo Netflix, ma chi ha familiarità con la filmografia di Adam McKay sa che i suoi film sono tutt'altro che un mero divertissement.
Premi: Candidato a 4 Golden Globes nella categoria musical o commedia per Miglior film, attore protagonista (DiCaprio), attrice protagonista (Lawrence) e sceneggiatura. 4 nomination ai BAFTA per Miglior film, attore protagonista (DiCaprio), sceneggiatura originale e colonna sonora.

In sintesi: Karen si è sorpresa che sapessi quasi tutti i dialoghi a memoria (specialmente la parte in cui c'è Galadriel), ma tant'è, questo è il film che ha dato inizio a tutto per me, la passione per il cinema, la voglia di condividerlo, il piacere di lasciarsi trasportare da una storia ben raccontata. Per me "La Compagnia dell'Anello" è sempre e ancora tutto questo e non importa che 20 anni siano passati, la magia che per me questo film è in grado di suscitare è la stessa del primo giorno.

Per chi ama "Il Signore degli Anelli" non sarà che un altro modo per celebrare questa saga, per tutti gli altri - specialmente chi si dovesse approcciare a questo franchise per la prima volta - consiglio di cominciare dalla versione cinematografica e vedere come va.

Film 1803 - The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

Intro: Ebbene sì, dopo mesi passati a recuperare i film visti più di recente per dare un tocco un pelo più contemporanea al blog, ecco che si torna indietro nel tempo, così tanto che a momenti fatico a ricordare dove e quando abbia visto le pellicole nella lista... Qualche sforzo in più e ce la posso fare!

Film 1803: "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" (2001) di Peter Jackson

In sintesi: ma che volete che vi dica? Ogni tanto mi prende la malinconia e la voglia di rivedere questo primo "Signore degli Anelli", titolo chiave per quando mi riguarda, prima vera pellicola che mi ha fatto innamorare del cinema. Se non l'ho visto una ventina di volta poco ci manca (senza contare tutte le visioni dei vari sequel).
Insomma, inutile ribadire che per me si tratti di un indiscusso capolavoro e anche se sì, oggi gli effetti speciali risultano un tantino datati, il risultato finale è comunque magnifico.

Ps. Poco prima della conclusione della prima parte del mio anno in Nuova Zelanda - ovvero prima di tornare a casa per le feste 2018 - ho coronato il mio segno di andare a visitare il set originale della saga (e quella de "Lo Hobbit").

Pps. Poco prima della conclusione della seconda parte del mio anno in Nuova Zelanda, a Wellington ho visitato gli studios/museo della Weta, la compagnia che ha realizzato gli effetti speciali per tutti i film di Jackson. Un'esperienza magnifica.

Vale o non vale: Questo film ha vent'anni ed è ancora un maledetto capolavoro.
So che non a tutti l'idea di passare due ore e mezza seguire un terzo di racconto su un gruppo di nani, elfi, hobbit e orchi possa sembrare allettante, ma per quanto mi riguarda potrei rivedere questa pellicola all'infinito. Liv Tyler stupenda, Cate Blanchett divina nonostante il ruolo brevissimo. Grande cast, magnifica avventura e colonna sonora da manuale.
