Intro: On Christmas day, after all the food I had for lunch, I decided to dedicate the rest of the day to doing nothing. So I napped for a while, then I decided to watch a movie. I ended up watching three. Here's the first one.

Thoughts: Nothing says Christmas like Harry Potter, so I went for it. Usually I would have went for my favourite "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", but this time aroun I decided to switch things up a bit a go for the one I like "the least" (I love them all, of course).
This is after I went to "The Making of Harry Potter" Warner Bros. Studio Tour in London last Summer and their temporary exibition focused around the making of this movie, which was extremely well done and sparkled a new found interest in this third Harry Potter chapter.
Needless to say, I really enjoyed re-watching "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban", a great movie made by the amazing director Alfonso Cuarón. Very different from the previous first to chapters of the saga, this installment is darker in tones and themes, altough very safely family-friendly.
A great watch, always nice to go back to Hogwarts.

Worth a watch?: For me, Harry Potter (no matter which movie of the series) is always a great option. I try to avoid watching them constantly, but if I could I'd definitely re-watch them multiple times a year.
Awards: Nominated for 2 Academy Awards for Best Original Score and Best Visual Effects. 4 nominations at the BAFTAs (Best British Film, Best Visual Effects, Best Makeup & Hair, Best Production Design) and 1 Grammy nomination for Best Score Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media.

Intro: Il Capodanno è passato e siamo riusciti a festeggiarlo a dove mangiando come se non ci fosse un domani. Motivo per cui, l'1 gennaio 2022 lo abbiamo passato in casa, tutto il giorno sul divano a guardare una pellicola dietro l'altra. Come poi era giusto che fosse.

In sintesi: non che mi abbia per alcuna ragione arricchito di contenuti l'universo potteriano, però "Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts" di HBO Max era decisamente quello che ci voleva per un primo dell'anno all'insegna delle coccole emotive.
I dietro le quinte mostrati non sono particolarmente inediti in termini di quanto è raccontato o mostrato - tutte cose che bene o male si sapevano già - quanto più per il fatto che abbiamo la possibilità di ritrovare i vari protagonisti della saga e soddisfare la nostra curiosità di sapere che fine abbiano fatto gli attori (e lo stato della loro "conservazione", per certi versi).
In generale, comunque, è stato bello ritrovare tutti coloro che hanno contribuito a portare la magia di Harry Potter sul grande schermo - tranne la Rowling, lei come previsto, appare solamente in filmati d'archivo - e, personalmente, ho trovato che questo speciale sia stato il film giusto con cui iniziare l'anno nuovo all'insegna di emozioni familiari e bei ricordi.

Vale o non vale: Tra il cast reunion e il dietro le quinte, "Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts" è il titolo perfetto per tutti gli appassionati della saga del maghetto Potter a cui è evidente che il film sia indirizzato. Il resto del pubblico potrebbe anche apprezzare nel momento in cui abbia quantomeno gradito i film originali, altrimenti non ha alcun senso recuperare questo speciale.

Intro: Non lo avevo mai visto ed ero sempre stato curioso di recuperarlo. Ricordo che da bambino ero rimasto particolarmente colpito da uno degli outfit di un personaggio di questa pellicola...

In sintesi: non è la prima volta che Besson delude un po' le mie aspettative e nonostante i numerosi titoli a suo favore ("Léon" in primis), da "Il quinto elemento" mi aspettavo molto, molto di più. Avventura, sci-fi, una tonnellata di effetti speciali, qualche elemento comico ed esplosioni in ogni dove per un'ambientazione futuristica che convince solo a metà, il tutto per un caotico risultato finale che rimane impresso per due soli motivi: il traffico volante della New York 2263 e il "vestito" carta igienica-fetish di Milla Jovovich. Il resto non è nulla che non si sia già visto e anche qui - nemmeno a dirlo - si scomodano geroglifici e antiche profezie (esempi similissimi dal passato e presente: "Mannequin", 1987, e "X-Men: Apocalisse", 2016). Intrattiene, ma non convince.
Cast: Bruce Willis, Gary Oldman, Ian Holm, Chris Tucker, Milla Jovovich, Luke Perry.
Box Office: $263.9 milioni
Vale o non vale: Fa del suo meglio per consegnare un'avventura sorprendente e divertente, ma non ci riesce del tutto. Gli effetti speciali sono quelli che sono e nonostante la presenza di un cast internazionale e la regia lungimirante di uno come Besson, la storia non riesce ad elevarsi oltre lo status di tentativo non americano di produrre un film ad alto budget. Comunque si fa guardare.
Premi: Candidato a 1 premio Oscar per i Migliori effetti sonori e vincitore di 1 BAFTA per gli effetti speciali; ai César 1998 la pellicola era candidata a 8 premi (tra cui Miglior film) e ne ha vinti 3: Miglior regia, fotografia e scenografia. Nominato a 2 Razzie per Peggior attrice non protagonista (Jovovich) e Peggior nuova star (Tucker).

Intro: E finalmente si entra nel vivo della stagione dei premi, con il primo titolo da recuperare in vista della stagione degli Oscar! E non mancavano le giuste ragioni...

In sintesi: risultato finale buono, soprattutto grazie alle ottime performance di Oldman (impressionante) e Scott Thomas. Forse da questa pellicola mi aspettavo qualcosa di più, in ogni caso la storia è molto interessante e costruita attorno ad un personaggio magnetico, a tratti ambiguo, difficile spesso da inquadrare. E la sceneggiatura è capace di sottolineare l'imperfetta umanità del proprio soggetto protagonista dandone un ritratto sfaccettato e credibile quanto basta;
il vero neo di prodotti come questo è l'enorme dislivello tra la performance dominante, ovvero quella che andrà a vincere l'Oscar - cito solo altri tre casi identici: Forest Whitaker in "The Last King of Scotland", Julia Roberts in "Erin Brockovich", Philip Seymour Hoffman in "Capote" -, e il resto del prodotto, che perde di visibilità nei confronti di tutta l'attenzione guadagnata dall'attore in odore da premio. "Darkest Hour" non si sottrae all'equazione e, a fronte delle 6 candidature solo due vanno a segno, anche perché nessuno si sarebbe mai aspettato di vederlo trionfare nella categoria Miglior film, suppongo;
curiosamente si ricollega in parte alla trama del "Dunkirk" di Nolan, uscito lo stesso anno e competitor diretto del film di Wright agli ultimi Academy Awards. Entrambi, infatti, parlano di Churchill e del famoso discorso che il primo ministro pronunciò per spronare le forze armate del Regno Unito a scacciare l'esercito tedesco di Hitler ("We shall fight on the beaches");
tutto sommato un biopic che centra l'obiettivo di approfondire la figura pubblica e privata del famoso politico britannico, mettendone in luce le molteplici facce e sfaccettature; del resto a Wright non manca un buon occhio e una perspicace scelta dei soggetti dei propri film. Non è un capolavoro, ma funziona.
Cast: Gary Oldman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Lily James, Stephen Dillane, Ronald Pickup, Ben Mendelsohn.
Box Office: $150.2 milioni
Vale o non vale: Recitato molto bene, capace di incuriosire lo spettatore avvicinandolo non solo al personaggio, ma anche alle vicende storiche narrate, questo film funziona bene e sicuramente merita i riconoscimenti ricevuti durante la recente stagione di premiazioni. Da recuperare.
Premi: 2 Oscar vinti su 6 candidature (Miglior attore protagonista e trucco, stessi premi vinti anche ai BAFTA), un Golden Globe a Oldman

Intro: Le commedie stupidine sono tra quelle che preferisco per rilassarmi e qui, al Takarakka, se c’è la possibilità di staccare un po’ è meglio coglierla al volo. Ecco perché questo film sembrava il titolo perfetto.

In sintesi: deludente e davvero poco ispirato. Avrebbe anche le carte in regola per raccontare qualcosa di simpatico, ma davvero mancano i momenti divertenti e resta solamente una spy story che tenta di risultare comica, ma non ci riesce. Non è colpa dei due protagonisti Reynolds e Jackson, semplicemente la sceneggiatura non è granché.

Reynolds ha stile e dimostra di avere le qualità da protagonista, Jackson fa sempre lo stesso ruolo, il risultato finale manca di originalità. Dimenticabile.

In sintesi: non è “Il signore degli anelli”, ma comunque il battaglione finale funziona. Harry batte Voldemort (che ve lo dico a fare) e il mondo magico sopravvive alla sua più grande minaccia, catapultandosi in un futuro che la stessa Rowling ha da poco ripreso nel suo “Cursed Child” teatrale. Tutto è bene quel che finisce bene, insomma. Soprattutto se c’è spazio per un’infinità di altre storie!

Dopo un bel po' di assenza, si torna online. Giusto per qualche ora, ovviamente.
Così il primo, nuovo post risale a una vita fa. A dicembre, in viaggio, ci siamo concessi numerosi sfizi. Tra cui un Harry Potter dietro l'altro. Qui eravamo a metà!

Pensieri: Nostalgia canaglia. Nel momento in cui scrivo ho appena finito di vedere l’ottavo e conclusivo capitolo della saga dopo che, qualche giorno fa, ho cominciato a leggere “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” e mi è tornata voglia del maghetto e delle sue magiche avventure. Pensavo di essere oltre la necessità di rivedere nuovamente tutta la saga, eppure eccoci di nuovo qua. Il quinto capitolo l’ho visto un paio di mesi fa, ma va detto che non avendo molto tempo libero ora che lavoro – né una connessione degna di nota – sono rimasto particolarmente indietro con le recensioni. Vergognosamente indietro. Del resto il blog giace immutato da quando, all’inizio di quest’anno, ho salutato e messo in pausa il progetto. Da allora non ho certo smesso di vedere film e, in un certo senso, mi piace l’idea che la prima recensione dopo così tanto tempo riguardi il Sig. Potter. Del resto la saga la adoro, i libri pure e tutti e 8 i film sono magicamente piacevoli, ognuno con i suoi pregi e difetti che ho elencato ampiamente numerose altre volte. Ecco perché aggiungo solo che, ancora oggi, rivedere “Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix” è un gran bel piacere.

SAG Awards 2018: nomination e vincitori

Olivia Munn and Niecy Nash revealed the nominees from the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood. Presenters were joined by SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris, SAG Awards committee chair JoBeth Williams, and SAG Awards committee member Elizabeth McLaughlin.
“Big Little Lies,” “Stranger Things,” and “GLOW” each scored four nods on the TV side, while “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” landed four nominations and “Lady Bird” received three for film.
Kristen Bell will host the SAG Awards on Jan. 21.

Film 1455 - Léon

Me ne hanno sempre parlato tutti benissimo, ma non avevo mai trovato la scusa giusta per vederlo. L'ho trovata una sera a Melbourne, alla ricerca di un film da vedere per una serata casalinga.

Film 1455: "Léon" (1994) di Luc Besson

Pensieri: Nonostante ci sarebbero tutti gli elementi per ritenere questa storia scabrosa e sbagliata, di fatto "Léon" risulta un meraviglioso, piccolo capolavoro, un misto fra un gangster movie anni '70 di Scorsese e un "Lolita" moderno, per un risultato finale coinvolgente e maledettamente intrigante.
Metà del lavoro lo fanno l'improbabile coppia Reno - Portman, un tuo talmente agli antipodi da risultare assolutamente perfetto; Reno è l'italiano (il che fa un po' ridere) immigrato e spietato assassino su commissione, Portman è la sua giovanissima vicina di casa a cui sterminano la famiglia. In questo universo parallelo di violenza e carneficina i due troveranno il modo di connettersi e parlarsi, di creare un proprio microcosmo surreale quanto paradossalmente divertente in cui una versione degenerata del rapporto padre-figlia (e qualche tinta da amante da parte della bambina) diventa l'unico universo umanamente sostenibile per due persone sole e dalla visione molto personale delle cose della vita. Così l'assassino si trasforma in mentore e figura paterna per una ragazzina che fuma sigarette, vorrebbe baciarlo ed è in cerca di vendetta su chi le ha fatto fuori gli unici parenti che aveva, soprattutto il fratellino di 4 anni. La combinazione di questi due esseri umani ai poli opposti è micidiale, fortemente provocatoria, eppure assolutamente riuscita. Il merito nel complesso va certamente a un Luc Besson qui davvero in formissima e ancora fuori da quella fantascienza che oggi sembra averlo risucchiato. Con "Léon" ha creato davvero un piccolo capolavoro lanciando, inoltre, la carriera di una giovanissima Natalie Portman già allora palesemente star.
Insomma, una pellicola davvero riuscita, da vedere almeno una volta nella vita.

Consigli: Una storia folgorante, un film bellissimo e per nulla convenzionale, un racconto assurdo eppure qui estremamente credibile di un'amicizia nata tra carneficine e sparatorie. Il sacrificio la fa da padrone quanto la vendetta e, nel mezzo, c'è il bellissimo rapporto tra Léon e Mathilda, un duo difficilmente dimenticabile. E imperdibile.

Procedo alla riscoperta della saga potteriana in inglese grazie a Netflix. Un piccolo peccato nostalgico qui in terra lontana.

Pensieri: Forse l'episodio della saga che ho bistrattato di più, eppure rivisto oggi il risultato finale è migliore di quanto in effetti ricordassi. La storia è come sempre molto intrigante e anche se buona parte della magia infantile qui è sparita - come lo sono stati certi aspetti rappresentati nelle storie precedenti, per lo più legati a luoghi e spazi - la nuova anima "nera" di Harry ha comunque il suo fascino.
Bandite le divise e i toni fiabeschi, Hogwards è stata tramutata in un luogo magico ma oscuro dove agli studenti non mancheranno le occasioni per cacciarsi in nuovi guai. Del resto tra dissennatori e assassini in circolazione, gli spunti sono alla portata di tutti.

Effetti speciali magnifici, risultato finale godibile e di qualità.

Proprinato a Luigi a tradimento una domenica mattina, forse non è stata la scelta più adatta da accompagnare al brunch...

Pensieri: Un po' uno spreco di cast, trama e budget (50 milioni di dollari) questo "Child 44" finisce per essere un interminabile lungaggine che carbura solo nel finale.
Credo il grande errore qui sia di voler essere forzatamente thriller, drammone di denuncia, film storico e adattamento cinematografico di un romanzo (di Tom Rob Smith) di successo. Il mix di buoni propositi e false speranze porta questa pellicola ad un nulla di fatto mortale per una storia di 137 minuti non stop su Unione Sovietica, comunismo, omicidi di bambini, Stato-padrone, violenza e soprusi di massa e chi più ne ha più ne metta. I toni drammatici sono pesantissimi e per la maggior parte della trama pare che la violenza gratuita, lo sconforto morale, l'annientamento del singolo siano gli unici elementi presenti e che, invece, i 44 ragazzini del titolo, i cui omicidi sono così ampiamente pubblicizzati nel trailer, non trovino spazio nella narrazione. Il che è un peccato, perché la contestualizzazione storica - necessaria e dovuta - è un conto, ma l'accanimento eccessivo non giova a nessuno, men che meno allo spettatore. Si arriva, dunque, al finale tanto agognato e ci si chiede se metà delle vicende raccontate non potessero essere sforbiciate e lasciate per un'eventuale versione estesa da home video. Un po' dispiace, perché i presupposti per un prodotto di qualità c'erano, non fosse altro che per il cast: Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Noomi Rapace Vincent Cassel per citare i più conosciuti. Il risultato finale è piatto, incapace di suscitare in chi guarda quelle emozioni che una trama del genere sembrerebbe portare necessariamente con sé e il tutto si conclude in un prodotto angosciante, ma non ispirato, che richiede fatica e uno sforzo di fede in vista di un finale che, invece, non ripaga le aspettative. Un'occasione buttata.

Consigli: Francamente non è un titolo che si possa decidere di vedere a cuor leggere. Il tema storico già di per sé appesantisce, senza contare che qui il tutto è gravato da una cupa atmosfera oppressiva e dispotica, un regime della paura che quando sgarri ti mette in fila contro un muro e spara. Di base "Child 44 - Il bambino n. 44" non è un film da buttare, semplicemente non è il film che poteva essere e questo è una perdita di tempo, oltre che uno spreco. Se si è fan di uno degli attori - grande Hardy - o del romanzo da cui è tratto, può aver senso tentare la visione. Gli altri che non abbiano un valdo motivo non ci provino neanche.
